THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Weatherstrip Now for SummerQ: I know that weatherstripping in the winter can keep out cold air and lower my heat-ing bill, but what about summertime? -- Ellen in New York

A: Just as blocking cold air from entering during the winter months can keep you more comfortable and save on heating costs, reducing the amount of cool air that escapes the interior of the home during the hot summer months also can save money. If your home’s windows and doors are well-sealed against drafts -- either because they are brand-new or because you installed thicker weatherstripping in the fall -- that seal should be enough to keep air-conditioned air inside. A home’s insulation also works year-round to help maintain comfortable temperatures indoors. It works best when in good shape, so if you haven’t inspected the insulation in a while, check the condition of any that you can access, such as the attic or crawl-spaces. The material should not be compressed or matted, and defi nitely should not be damp or moldy. Replace old or damaged insulation. And while you’re up in the attic, inspect the vents installed around the space. These should not be blocked or damaged; if they are, unblock them or have them repaired. This is one area where, winter or summer, outside air needs to circulate constantly in order to prevent moisture, excessive heat or cold from damaging the outer envelope of your home. (A home’s “envelope” generally consists of the uninhabited spaces just inside the outer walls and roof. Air fl owing through these spaces helps keep the build-ing materials from deteriorating.)Spring is an excellent time to inspect weatherstripping, insulation and venting around the home, as you can make any repairs in fairly comfortable weather and be ready for the hot season ahead.

HOME TIP: Curtains and blinds play an important role in maintaining interior temperatures. Close them to keep direct sunlight from heating up the house in summer.

(could it lead to more?)Dear Dave,We’ve been following your plan, and it’s been a real blessing to us. Last week, my mother-in-law told my husband that they haven’t paid their property taxes yet - $3,000 was due in January. I love my in-laws, but they’re big spenders. They’ve got plenty of money and love to take lots of trips. We make good money, too, and could help them out, but we’re afraid this may be just the tip of the iceberg. What’s your advice on handling this?

KellyDear Kelly,This is a really touchy situation. First of all, you shouldn’t do anything. Your husband needs to handle this, be-cause he’s their son. Even if you make kind, polite sug-gestions, they’ll assume you’re the one withholding from them. You don’t want to be labeled as the evil daughter-in-law!I understand your position and agree that you don’t want to enable their bad habits. Giving a drunk a drink is never a good idea. But this is family we’re talking about. You should try to fi nd a way to help them if you can. If that help includes money, make certain you know exactly where it goes. When you give someone $3,000 (the amount needed for the taxes) you earn the right to have a say in what’s happening.Maybe your husband could go have coffee with them and just talk about things. He could explain how you guys are getting out of debt, and living on a budget to get control of your money. He could tell them how it’s been a fabulous thing for your marriage and your

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where

they will never become moth eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from theives. Where ever your treasure is, there your heart

and thoughts will also be.

Matthew 6:19-21

fi nances, and that he’d love to show them how you’re doing it.I’ve got a feeling that mom and dad didn’t raise their son to have dessert fi rst and then eat his vegetables, but that’s exactly what they are doing. They need to pay their property taxes before they go running off on a bunch of fancy trips. From what you said, they’ve got the money to take care of what needs to be done and have some fun, but if they don’t correct their course, they’re liable to have their fi nancial dignity stripped from them.As long as your husband explains things gently, lays out the boundaries in a loving and diplomatic way, yet remains fi rmly determined not to make things worse by enabling them, I think everything will be alright.

- Dave (safe from foreclosure)

Dear Dave,We’re going to be renting a house while we save up to build our dream home. How can we make sure the house is safe from foreclosure?

AndyDear Andy,A smart owner of rental property asks questions and does some research to fi nd out if you’re what he wants as a tenant. You can do the same thing! Ask up front about the situation and about their fi nancial stability. Let them know you’d like some assurance for you and your family that they’re not a foreclosure risk. You also want to be sure your lease allows you to stay in the house if there’s a foreclosure. Check with a lawyer to see if this will help in your state. If the house is worth lots of money, or it’s already paid for, chances are you’ll be fi ne. If he’s unwilling to talk about this, or he tells you he got into real estate after seeing how profi table it could be during a late-night infomercial, you’ll probably be a foreclosure victim!

Living Will Versus DNR Orders

Do you know the differences be-tween a living will and a Do Not Resuscitate order? Some people don’t, and unfortunately, some of them are medical and emergency personnel.A living will and a DNR order are not interchangeable. They are not the same thing. The living will is your instructions for end-of-life care when you’re not able to speak for yourself. It is part of a set of documents called Advance Care Directives that might cover things such as who will direct your care if you can’t, and who can admit you for care. The DNR is an order your doc-tor gives about not providing re-suscitation for respiratory arrest or heart attack -- AFTER having discussed your wishes with you in advance.I can easily envision a situation where things could go very wrong.

Let’s say you have a living will and for some reason emer-gency services personnel are called. They might ask, “Do you have a living will?” You answer, “Yes.” Suddenly, they might decide not to treat your condition appropriately and transport you as quickly. EMTs are not the ones to decipher what you mean in your living will. Their job is to get you to the hospital fast and in the best condition pos-sible. Once there, your wishes in the living will take effect, and the doc-tors will invoke that ONLY if there are end-of-life concerns.Check with elder legal services in your area to be sure you understand the ramifi cations of your Advance Healthcare Directive documents. Laws can differ from state to state. Then discuss it with your doctor to make sure there’s no confusion about what you want.Remember, you can change your mind about your living will anytime you choose.

How Can Phonies Rest In Peace?

An investigation last year by the Chicago Tribune turned up a large number of people who had claimed to be medal recipients but

weren’t. Military records were checked, obituaries were scrutinized and information was amassed and compared. Of the more than 300 cases studied, the newspaper turned up approximately 100 each of phony claims for Silver Stars, Navy Crosses, Distin-guished Service Crosses, Air Force Crosses and the big one -- Medals of Honor.Worst of all, it also discovered fake information on headstones in military cemeteries. It boggles the mind, this last bit. When I buried my own father at Arlington National Cemetery, paper-work had to be handed over and, I assume, was looked at by the cemetery directors. For a head-stone to be inscribed with a bogus valor decora-tion, it must mean that some fake paperwork was involved, perhaps passed along by the families who believed in the tales of exploit that must have been

told all along by the veter-ans, along with a fi stful of fake medals. That’s the only explanation I can come up with. For those of you who’ve claimed either verbally or in writing that you earned medals when you really didn’t, send me an e-mail and tell me why you did it. I’m curious, I really am. I want to know what makes a United States military veteran lie.Tell me, too, if you’re going to get square with fam-ily and friends before you end up in a cemetery with bogus information on your headstone for all eter-nity.I’ll do another column later, without names, with a summary of the answers -- assuming that anyone is willing to respond. My e-mail address is below. Reply by May 15.

PAWS CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Give Kids Another Chance for PetDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am appalled, angered and sad-dened by the response from Dori to the parent who wrote you after her children’s goldfi sh died because they didn’t take care of it. She said the children were set up to fail. Wow.I hope this person does not have children. If she believes that a child is set up for failure, the child will believe he or she is a failure and will not try to improve and grow mentally. I cannot see how a parent could feel right by instilling this in a child’s mind! So, a goldfi sh was not cared for, and died. While this is sad and maybe could have been avoided, it is not completely the child’s fault. For one thing, goldfi sh are very susceptible to disease and overeating, which can cause death. Parents should always supervise the care of a pet, for sure, but that does not mean taking complete care of it.

Children need to learn structure and respect for living things. A goldfi sh is a very good start. They mainly need clean water, nutritional food and possibly occasional medicine. Children have to learn about their pet, and a goldfi sh can be a great start with the proper supervision from parents and a book to read (or parents can read to them) about the needs of that specifi c pet.As for the parent’s question about whether to get another pet, I think she could get the child a hamster or Guinea pig. This pet would be much more interactive and enjoyable. I know that if the parents supervise and stick to the structure, the child will take care of the pet. -- Lora S., via e-mail DEAR LORA: Great answer. Thank you for giving readers something to think about.Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. WHY GET FIT NOW? Because it’s SPRING!!!

…And you are MOTIVATED!

The one element to getting fi t that we simply cannot bypass is MOTIVATION.

It’s got to be there. Without motivation, it is diffi cult to pull out the running shoes, get out of the house, drive down to the club, and walk through the doors to climb on your treadmill forcing yourself to sweat for an hour, three to fi ve times a week. There will always be an excuse, a justifi ed reason, or another priority that keeps you from getting fi t if you are not motivated to get fi t. Motivation to get fi t can be hard to fi nd, but Mother Nature is unveiling all kinds of motivation this month! It’s Spring, and with Spring comes motivation! It is hard to escape the many Spring motivators. Here are 7 Spring Motivators:1. Losing the winter weight2. More sunshine encourages more activity3. Taking off the coat reveals tighter fi tting clothing4. Spring symbolizes renewal of life, growth and vitality5. Running Bloomsday without getting sore6. Keeping up with the kids outdoors7. Looking great in your swimsuit

WOW! Thank you Spring! One of these motivators is calling to you. How can you tell if you are motivated to get fi t? You are motivated when the thought of putting on your running shoes, getting out of the house, driving down to the club and hopping up on the treadmill is even somewhat inviting. That’s all it takes. You are moti-vated to get fi t when “action” happens and you fi nd yourself “moving” in the “get fi t” direction.

When you fi nd yourself even partially motivated, call a friend, talk with a personal trainer, go to the club and simply say, “I want to get fi t!” They will help.

Now, the key to getting fi t is not only acting on your motivation. The key to getting fi t is “staying motivat-ed!”

How do you stay motivated? The answer to this ques-tion is one of the most important discoveries you will ever fi nd. You are going to be amazed and forever grateful. But, you will have to wait for next month’s TIDBiTS publication to learn how you stay motivated. Until then, let spring “move you” to begin getting fi t. Take action now for spring is here and motivation is as well.

PHOTO: Racing legends David Pearson (left) and Tony Stewart have a lot in common, which is why they are both champions.

When Legends MeetOn a sunny afternoon in the ga-rage area of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, ex-champions David Pearson and Tony Stewart got to know each other. At the time, Pearson was 70 years old, Stewart 33. Pearson’s last

championship occurred in 1969, when what is now Nextel Cup was referred to as Grand National and there were no races in Las Vegas.Perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, though, Stew-art is a throwback to the days when dinosaurs named Pear-son, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison ruled the earth. Earth, at the time, mainly consisted of the South.Pearson, who won 105 races, was leisurely strolling around with another notable resident of Spartanburg, S.C., former car owner and ace mechanic Walter “Bud” Moore. As luck would have it, they happened to be in front of the stall where Stew-art’s No. 20 Chevrolet rested, shortly after the end of a practice session and as Stewart was climbing out of his orange car.“Do you know Tony Stewart?” I asked Pearson.“I’ve met him,” he said. “I don’t know him. I know he can sure enough drive a race car.”“I think you’d like him,” I said. “Hang on a minute.”I then walked over in front of the car, where Stewart was dis-cussing various matters of technical signifi cance with his crew chief, Greg Zipadelli.“David Pearson’s out there,” I said to Stewart. “Want to say hello?”“Give me a minute,” said Stewart.I walked back out and started talking with Moore, about whose

teams I used to write, and Pearson, the hero of my youth. Pearson looks as if he could climb right back into a stock car and run 500 miles. He seems far more robust than a man who underwent open-heart surgery a few years back. He has the same barrel chest and broad shoulders he boasted when he was winning 11 races in 18 tries in 1973.After a few minutes of chitchat, though, the proud ex-champion was getting a little restless. With a small sense of urgency, I excused myself and returned to the garage stall, where Stewart had been intercepted by someone else.“Hey, Tony,” I said, “the best stock-car racer who ever lived is out there, and I don’t think I’d make him wait much longer.”Stewart looked up. “Don’t let him get away,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”Thirty seconds may have passed before Stewart strode out into the desert sunshine.“Hey,” he said, shaking Pearson’s hand, “I need you to drive my car for me at Darlington. I ain’t worth a damn at that track.”Pearson didn’t fl inch. “All you got to do is drive that thing as high on the track as you can get it,” he said.“That’s what I’m doing,” Stewart said, smiling.“You ought to have driven it when it was hard,” replied Pearson, who won there a record 10 times. “It’s easy now.”By this time, a small army of photographers had descended. After a reasonable period of “photo ops” taken while they chatted, Stewart and Pearson walked over to the Joe Gibbs Racing transporter and went inside to chat a while longer. Pearson came out with an auto-graphed photo for his grandson, aptly named David.Say what you want about Stewart, but he is nothing if not mindful of the past and respectful of its heroes. At any given time that he isn’t embroiled in high-level discussions on just how he’s going to man-age to win the next race, a visit to Stewart’s transporter will fi nd him

talking shop with a Red Farmer or a Donnie Allison. Stewart feels at home in the company of the hardscrabble men who preceded him.No one needs to remind Pearson of how great he was. He’s a proud man, but he’s not one to elaborate on his great works and deeds. Pearson grew up in a textile-mill village, and when he rose to promi-nence, he knew well the feeling of being looked down upon by the society folks. I wasn’t kidding when I told Stewart he was the best stock-car racer ever to strap on a helmet. That’s my opinion and it’s unlikely to change.(Reprinted from “Haul A** and Turn Left: The Wit and Wisdom of NASCAR,” by Monte Dutton (2006). Reprinted with the author’s per-mission.)***To read more Monte Dutton, visit his blog at NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com), which features all of his reporting on rac-ing, roots music and life on the road.
