THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

How to Smooth Caulk Without Special ToolQ: On the television I frequently see ads for a product that is cut at dif-ferent angles so that you can smooth out beads of caulk at different widths. Is this worth the price? -- Terry B., Niagara Falls, N.Y.

A: If it seems worth it to you, it might be worth the purchase price. The question to ask yourself is, how often do you re-caulk seams or re-grout tiles? If you do this fairly often in the course of home improve-ment and repair, a reusable smoothing tool might make the job easier. For many homeowners, though, re-caulking is an occasional annoy-ance. You don’t need to pay for a special tool for smoothing down the bead unless you really want to. Most do-it-yourselfers just use a fi nger to initially smooth the caulk down into the seam, and then use the corner of a sturdy index card to scrape away excess. The card is disposable and almost free. Some caulkers trim away the corner of the index card so that less caulk or grout is scraped out of the seam. A playing card also is ideal for this job. Either type of card is not only sturdy, but can be bent or curled to get around tight spaces and corners.Even with the best tools, excess caulk doesn’t always get scraped away. Or a glob drips a few inches below the seam and dries before you notice it. To completely clear caulk away from areas you don’t want it, moisten a cloth with distilled vinegar and rub it away, being

careful not to get vinegar into the seam.

HOME TIP: To prevent cracks from appearing in new caulk, fi ll a sink or tub with water before recaulking a seam, and let the caulk dry before draining.

(back in the stupid again!)

Dear Dave,My wife and I had a bankruptcy discharged about 18 months ago. We’d gotten in over our heads with credit cards and couldn’t keep up the pay-ments or take care of things around the house. Afterwards, a friend told us we needed to re-build our credit score with a low-limit credit card. Since then we’ve missed a few payment, and owe about $400. Should I try to settle for a lower amount?

RodneyDear Rodney,Okay, let’s re-hash what you just said. You went into debt, and couldn’t pay your bills. Then you fi led bankruptcy. After suffering through that and being discharged, you went right back into debt and messed up again. What’s wrong with this picture?Stop taking advice from this “friend,” who hasn’t got a clue when it comes to money. A high credit score is an “I love debt” score. It isn’t an indica-tion that you have money and manage it wisely. It’s an indication you have a lot of debt! Borrow-ing has not been a blessing in your life. It pushed you into bankruptcy, and now it’s gotten you into trouble again! It’s time to stop!I realize $400 seems like a lot of money right now, but it’s not the end of the world. Get on a written, monthly budget, and give every dollar you make a name on paper before the month begins. You’ll have to pay some Stupid Tax, but you can take

care of this in no time if you stop eating out for a while and have a monster, blow-out garage sale this weekend. Close the account, cut that card into tiny, little pieces, and never go back into debt again! You are living proof that if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting. The solution? Change! Be-ginning now!

- Dave

(do more than pay early)

Dear Dave,Will it improve my credit score, and help my abil-ity to buy home later, if I pay my rent 30 days early for the next two or three years?

TannerDear Tanner,No. Your landlord probably isn’t going to report early payments to the credit bureaus. Just make sure you pay it on time. It is smart to pay a few days early, though - maybe seven to 10 days ahead of time, but for a different reason. That way if something goes wrong at the bank, you’ve still got time to fi x the problem. Chances are your credit score won’t be impacted by your rental payments unless you’re late, and especially if you have several late payments. That could sure be-come a black mark against you later!I’m not a big fan of the FICO score, because it doesn’t measure things like assets, income or net worth. It’s really just an indicator of your interac-tion with debt! This is one of the reasons why it’s really dumb for companies to base lending de-cisions solely on a FICO score. Fortunately, you can still fi nd lenders that provide mortgage loans based on manual underwriting procedures, but they’re getting harder and harder to fi nd.

- Dave

Make Gardening Fun Again

Have you dusted off your garden-ing gloves yet? I hadn’t planned on having a garden this year. The catalogs that arrived over the win-ter were beautiful ... and enticing. But I thought I’d skip all the bend-ing and stooping that comes with having a vegetable and fl ower gar-den ... until I saw the seedlings at the hardware store. I was hooked all over again. This time, however, I managed to keep my purchases and the size of the garden a bit more manageable.Have you thought that this might be the year you don’t have some-thing growing? There are ways you can experience the satisfac-tion without so much of the work.Consider growing fl owers or herbs in pots right outside your door. Pick the sunny side of the house and remember to keep them well-watered.

Restoring Memorial Day

Once again Sena-tor Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) has tried to get Memorial Day re-stored to its original date, May 30. Right

after the fi rst of the year, he got right on it, as he’s done every single year since 1989. Within days, according to Congressional records, the bill was “Read twice and referred to the Com-mittee on the Judiciary,” where it still sits.Beginning in 1868, Memorial Day was celebrat-ed on May 30. It was a sacred day when the sole purpose was to put fl owers on the graves of those who’d given their lives in battle during the Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include all veterans who’d died in war. It was only in 1971 that the date was changed to be the last Monday in May. Easier for government workers, I guess, to get a full three-day week-end off. (If they want a replacement for Memo-rial Day, why not make Armed Forces Day into a long weekend?)In 2000 we were given “The National Moment

of Remembrance Act,” where, I assume, people all across the country stop what they’re doing at 3 p.m. local time. Its purpose is to “promote greater understanding of the meaning of the Memo-rial Day holiday.”If “a moment” is not enough, and if you want to speak up and either call or send e-mail to voice your opinion about restoring Memorial Day to its original date, go to www.judiciary.senate.gov for info on the Judiciary Commit-tee, where Inouye’s bill still languishes. I did a search for “restore Memorial Day” on its site and found nothing. Or you can thank Inouye for his efforts. His Congressional offi ce num-ber is 202-224-3934.

Grow something others can eat. Even a few rows of car-rots or a trellis full of green beans will produce food that the local shelters would love to have.Grow something lovely for others. Bouquets of fl owers grown on a patio can be dropped off at the hospital for patients who need a day brightener. If vision is a problem, grow vegetables that aren’t green so they can be more easily seen in the leaves. If there is no way you can grow veg-etables or fl owers where you live, look around your town. Many com-munities offer gardening space for seniors, complete with raised beds or vertical trellises that make the work so much easier. Ask at the se-nior center, too.My garden is of a more modest size this year, but I’m already discover-ing that it’s the care and feeding of growing things that brings the sat-isfaction, not how many baskets of green beans I’ll can this summer.

PAWS CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

The Right Pet FoodDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read all the time about how the best cat diets are fresh food this, raw food that. I’m all for a healthy pet, but I don’t have time to cook “Jamie” a fresh dinner every night. Is there just a good all-around pet food she can eat instead? -- Margie in Atlanta

DEAR MARGIE. Don’t feel guilty about time im-pacting what you can feed to your cat. The fact that you’re thinking and reading about it means you do care, and you’re trying to give her the best

food you can.Kibble or canned food mixed with fresh on vari-ous days throughout the week will provide a varied and healthy diet. Choose the best dry/canned food possible, based on Jamie’s age and health. Often your cat’s veterinarian will recommend a brand and type. Tell the vet about any fresh foods you plan to feed Jamie, in case there are any foods he or she does not want her to eat.Jamie’s diet can be planned a week in advance, based around your schedule, and some fresh foods can be prepared and stored, covered in the refrigerator, for up to three days. For example, if you work later on one night than another, that is perhaps a good day to feed her dry kibble, which you or a friend can put in her bowl at feeding time

Exercise Won’t Make Arthritis Worse

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have osteoarthritis of the hands, and my fi ngers have bony knobs on the knuckles. They look bad and hurt part of the time. I was a registered nurse and did lots of lifting of patients. Is the arthritis genetic or from the lifting? I go to the gym two to three times a week and have been doing so for two years. Am I making it worse? -- C.S.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis is the most common kind of arthritis. At age 65, one-third of people have evidence of knee osteoar-thritis, and close to 100 percent of women have evidence of osteoarthritis of their hands and fi ngers. Not all these people have symptoms. The tiny bumps on the knuckle below the fi ngernail are part of the arthritis picture. Genes are involved. Age, misalignment of bones and injury are other contributors. Exercise is not responsible. Continue your exercise program. Strong muscles protect joints, and exercise keeps them lim-ber. Only if an exercise is painful should you stop it. A joint is the place where two bone ends meet. The ends are covered with cartilage, and the entire joint is surrounded by a tough covering called the joint capsule. Cartilage makes it possible for one bone end to move over the other painlessly. Joint fl uid, contained in the joint by the joint capsule, oils the joint and also keeps it operating without friction. In osteoar-thritis, the joint cartilage begins to fray and crumble, and the joint fl uid thins. There is no cure for osteoarthritis; there are treatments. Tylenol is one of the best and safest drugs. Aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory medicines (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) are widely prescribed. They can cause ulcers, so they have to be

used in moderation. Voltaren gel is an anti-infl ammatory ap-plied to the skin over an affected joint. Less is absorbed this way, so it has fewer side effects. The doctor can inject a bothersome joint with cortisone. Artifi cial joints are always worth consideration when arthritis severely limits motion and is quite painful. The joint at the base of the thumb is often bothersome in women. An opera-tion that inserts a small piece of cartilage or other synthetic material can cushion that joint and bring great relief. The arthritis booklet discusses osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Have clubfeet disappeared? When I was a child, I knew several children who were born with them. Now I never hear about it. I am 92. -- R.T.

ANSWER: Clubfeet have not disappeared. It happens to about one in every 1,000 newborns. This is something that happens during fetal development. The foot bones are misaligned. The result is the soles of the feet turn to face each other, like the position of praying hands with palm against palm.Taping, strapping and casting are some of the ways used to treat clubfeet. Some infants require surgery to attain normal foot alignment.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newslet-ters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

PHOTO: Carl Edwards fl ies into the catch fence just before the fi nish line at the conclusion of the Aaron’s 499 on April 26. (photo: Associated Press)

NASCAR must learn from its

Talladega scareTALLADEGA, Ala. - On the morn-ing of the Aaron’s 499 in Talla-dega, after spending a couple of hours in the infi eld, I found to my disappointment that the gate in

front of the Talladega Superspeedway press box had been locked. As a result, I had to walk down to the start-fi nish line -- it’s near the entrance to turn one, not in the center of the trioval as at most tracks -- and cross the track there. I then walked for a half mile or so along the paved pathway at the foot of the grandstands. I looked at the so-called “catch fencing” and thought to myself that it looked neither as new nor as sturdy as at other tracks. This, of course, seemed odd, since a 1988 accident at this track is the very reason such fencing is sturdier than it once was. This was about an hour before the Aaron’s 499 began and about four and a half before that very fencing would be test-ed. Whether it kept Carl Edwards’ car out of the grandstands by design or good fortune is debatable. Edwards’ whirling mass of twisted metal tore holes in it. His car rose above the

top of the fence, where presumably it could have toppled into a crowd of fans.

As was also the case in Bobby Allison’s 1988 accident here, the fence held and did its job. As was also the case 21 years earlier, luck was involved. The day won’t live in infamy. Edwards’ car didn’t tumble into the grandstands. A few fans suffered broken bones from sharp, fl ying debris. Suffi ce it to say that the incident caused shivers to go down the spines of everyone who saw it, even those who were a bit occupied trying to get their race cars across the fi nish line.

It will be open season on NASCAR for a while. Men and women who don’t particularly care for automobile racing in the fi rst place will treat this almost-disaster as if it were one.

The good news is that what could’ve happened didn’t. Ed-wards emerged uninjured. A few fans, unlucky to be in the wrong place but lucky not to be hurt worse, suffered broken bones, welts and lacerations. There was blood on the scene but not in profusion.

Disaster, far worse than declining attendance and TV ratings, was thankfully averted. Now it’s time for NASCAR offi cials to ensure that, next time, the crucial factor isn’t good luck.

GoinG to the Post office?…noW there is a better alternative!

Local Business~Matters~Spokane County, WA

In this edition of “Local Business Matters” we will look at a locally owned and operated business that is an integral part of the Spokane community. If you are anything like me, I rarely look forward to making a trip to my neighborhood post office. The wait is usually a very long one, the staff is sometimes friendly, and they never have all the services I need in one building, so I end up making an additional two or three stops to complete the project I’m working on. Then I discovered and began to give my business to “The UPS Store.”

As a small business owner, I have come to appreciate the value-added business services that The UPS Store offers me, as well as all my other personal business needs. I also greatly appreciate the fact that they are locally owned and operated, and I can feel good about supporting their business while operating mine.

Late last year, I had the pleasure of meeting the owners of three local UPS Stores, Dave and Dennis Haider. Dave and Dennis started their first store two-years ago in the Valley and then opened an additional two stores in Airway Heights and Indian Trails. This team of brothers have a wealth of experience that help them serve their customers and community very well. Starting with Dave’s Air Force background as an air cargo/packing specialist to Dennis’ background as an Office Depot manager.

In addition to Dave and Dennis’ staff and expertise in value-added home/business services, The UPS Store also offers many other services that I find especially valuable. For instance, I can email just about anything I needprinted so that when I arrive the prints are done and I am on my way. They also offer notary services, copying, packaging, rubber stamps, public ac-cess computer, and best of all mailboxes. Their mailboxes are one of the most convenient services because they allow 24-hour access, they conveniently accept large packages, and they can sign for mail with complete anonymity. I can also call ahead and ask them to check my box for specific mail, and perhaps best of all I can have a personal mailbox, called a “PMB” with a physical address and receive delivery priority from the post office over a typical neighborhood box. I must admit this is especially helpful with the past winters we have had here in Eastern Washington.
