Protecting Outdoor Wood FurnitureQ: A friend told me that my new wooden lawn furniture would “cure” best if I just let it sit out in the yard through all four seasons. My dad told me to put waterproof sealant on the furniture. What do you think? -- Cherie in Columbia, Md.

A: Which advice to follow depends mainly on what type of wood from which your lawn furniture is constructed. A durable, usually tropical, hardwood like mahogany or teak should not be treated with anything other than the occasional cleaning with wood soap and water. Fur-niture made of this material will weather gracefully outside and even handles cold, snowy winters well. The wood often turns gray in a fairly short period, but as long as it’s kept clean and out of constantly damp conditions, it will stay serviceable for many years.Redwood or cedar furniture should be protected with a clear water sealer. These woods also can be painted (with enamel paint) or stained, but most owners only do so to cover a mark or discoloration -- oth-erwise let the natural wood grain show through the sealer coat. Bring this type of furniture inside for the winter, or at least move to a fairly dry location and cover with a tarp.Pine furniture also can be coated with water sealer, but painting or staining the wood is an equally good option. Store it indoors through the winter or cover up to reduce weathering problems.

HOME TIP: Cleaning those big outdoor-furniture cushions after a long winter? Scrub them with a large acrylic brush and soapy water, hang on a clothesline or fence, rinse with the garden hose and let dry.

SALUTE TO MOM! (continued):

• Mother’s Day is offi cially celebrated on May 10th in India.• Mother (1926) is a fi lm about a woman’s struggle during the Russian revolution.• A mother is someone who studies moths. It is pronounced moth-er.• Jayne Bleackly gave birth to her daughter Annie (3/20/00) 208 days after giving birth to her son, Jo-seph (9/3/99). This is the shortest interval between births for one mother on record.• Rhea is the mother of most Greek deities, in-cluding Zues.• A celebration of mothers was practiced in early Europe on the fourth Sunday in Lent. On this day, Christians celebrated the church they were bap-tized in as their “mother church.” In the 1600s, this celebration was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Day.• Mothering Day was brought to America with the Pilgrims.• The American celebration of Mother’s Day began with Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 Mother’s Day Proc-lamation. She called for an international Mother’s Day to celebrate peace and motherhood. Howe was the author of the Battle Hymn of the Repub-lic.• In 1908, U.S. Senator Elmer Burkett proposed a National Mother’s Day. The proposal was defeat-ed, but by 1909, nearly all the states held Mother’s Day services.• In 1949, Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.• Elizabeth Ann Buttle gave birth to her son Jo-seph 41 years and 185 days after she gave birth to her daughter Belinda in 1956. This is the longest interval between births by one woman in recorded history.• Jenna Cotton has three children born on the same date: Ayden 10/02/03, Logan 10/02/06 and Kayla 10/02/07. What are the odds? 7.5 in every

one million births.• “I looked on child rearing not only as a work of love and duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honorable pro-fession in the world and one that demanded the best that I could bring to it.” – Rose Kennedy• Another fi lm titled Mother (1996) stars Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds’ role of Mother was originally offered to both Doris Day and Nancy Reagan.• Omkari Panwar of India is the oldest recorded woman to give birth. She was estimated to be about seventy years old when she gave birth to her twins– it was an estimate due to the fact that she does not have a birth certifi cate. She con-ceived through in vitro fertilization and delivered the children in 2008.• Although it is currently unverifi ed, a Polish record shows Margaret Krasiwa (1655-1763) married for the third time at age ninety-four and had three chil-dren in that marriage.• In Yugoslovia, Children’s Day is celebrated three days before Christmas. Mother’s Day is the follow-ing Sunday and Father’s Day is the Sunday after that.• Rosinete Palmeira Serrao volunteered to be the surrogate mother for her daughter, Claudia de Brito, who could not have children. Rosinete gave birth to her own grandchildren on September 20, 2007.• Liza Minelli and Lorna Luft both come by their talent honestly as the daughters of Judy Garland - but did you know that Garland was the daughter of the vaudevillians Frank and Ethel Gumm?• Bast is a goddess of Egypt and is called the “mother of all cats.”• First Mom Michelle Obama won hearts back in the summer of 2008 by telling supporters she only spent two days a week on the campaign trail and made sure to be home by the end of the second day to be with her kids.

(how much is enough?)

Dear Dave,In your plan, you talk about Baby Step 3 as saving enough to have three to six months of expenses in your emergency fund. My husband and I were wondering how you can determine whether you need to be on the low end or high end of that range?

AmandaDear Amanda,Lots of times in a marriage you’ll have a situation where one person wants to save more, while the other is excited to move on toward investing. Technically, neither is wrong, so the emergency fund re-ally deals with someone’s own personal level of peace. Remember Murphy’s Law, and how it says that says if something can go wrong it will go wrong? Your emergency fund is Murphy Repellant. Some people just want to make sure he doesn’t knock on the door, while others want to make sure he stays in the next county! There are always practical considerations you can use to determine the amount of your emergency fund. If you both have very stable jobs, you’ll probably be okay saving up three or four months of expenses. But if just one of you works outside the home, or if one is self-employed or on commission, leaning toward the six month side is probably a good idea. Plus, you can always compromise. Start out with three months, but add a little every once in a while until you reach a point where you’re both comfortable!

- Dave

(fi nding the deal)

Dear Dave,You mentioned on your show that you once bought a truck below

wholesale price. Do you have any tips for fi nding a good deal on a used car?

AnonymousDear Anonymous,When it comes to things like this, I just go on a big treasure hunt. I don’t really care where I buy something, because the best deals will sometimes pop up in the most unlikely places. The rule to remember when buying big ticket items is this: He who has the most patience and the most information wins.If you do a little research and don’t get car fever, you can fi nd some pretty sweet deals. I’m all about good deals, so the patience part of the equation wasn’t a big thing for me. I did a lot of digging around while I was looking, and in the process became an expert on certain types of trucks in particular areas. It’s really hard to get burned if you have a little patience, and plenty of good, solid information!

- Dave

(keeping the money from the scumbag) Dear Dave,My nephew was recently left a large sum of money from a life insurance policy after his mother died. She did not have a will. His father, who has been out of the picture for some time, is about to be granted custody, and he’s been asking lots of suspicious questions about the money. We don’t trust his motives. How can we help make sure the money is protected?

AnonymousDear Anonymous,You need to talk to a lawyer, and take this matter to probate court immediately. Tell the judge about the situation and your concerns. Ask him to put your nephew’s money into a trust through a bank or other third party. Otherwise, as his guardian, there’s a good chance the father will be granted control of the money.I’m not big on bank trust departments, but I am big on keeping scumbags from taking money away from kids!

- Dave

SALUTE TO MOM! (continued):

• “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.” - Jewish Proverb• The Greek myth for the origins of the seasons all started with the sorrow of a mother. Peresephone, the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, was kidnapped by Hades and taken to his kingdom in the under-world. After many diffi culties, Persephone was only forced to stay with Hades for one season of the year and it is said that Demeter, the goddess of grain and fertility, makes this season the most barren and desolate of all the seasons as a sign of her mourning the time her daughter is away. • The Egyptian goddess Isis is one of the earli-est known celebrated mother fi gures. She was the wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus, the fi rst ruler of a unifi ed Egpyt. She was worshipped as the mother of all Pharaohs.• Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fi rst Sunday in May in South Africa and the last Sunday in May in Sweden.• Feodor Vassilyev was a Russian peasant who was married twice. What is most remarkable about him was that his fi rst wife set the record for most children born of a single mother. According to the Guiness book of World Records, Feodor’s wife gave birth twenty-seven times and sixty-seven of her sixty-nine children survived infancy. How is this possible? Feodor’s wife bore him sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of qua-druplets!

Where to Get HelpIt doesn’t matter if you’ve been back for days or decades. If you need readjust-ment help to transi-tion to civilian life (and that’s possible, even if

it’s been years), help is available. The Vet Centers -- there are 233 centers scattered across the country -- provide counseling and ser-vices to any veteran who saw combat. Addition-ally, there is bereavement counseling after the death of a loved one (which extends to the fami-lies of service personnel who died during military service), as well as sexual-trauma counseling for events that occurred during military service. You can get the ball rolling during business hours at 1-800-905-4675 (East Coast times) and 1-866-496-8838 (West Coast times).America’s Heroes at Work is a Department of La-bor program that helps veterans with traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder by providing the tools needed to gain employment. Some of those tools include interface with em-ployers to get adaptive technology and lighting

adjustments, scheduling rest breaks, job sharing and mentoring -- what-ever is required to put a veteran to work. Service-members who’ve been in Afghanistan and Iraq are especially served by this project. For more infor-mation, call 1-866-4-USA-DOL.With warmer weather here, Stand Downs across the country are gearing up and will likely be well-attended. Services are geared to the homeless and include clothing, shelter, health screenings and food, as well as information, counseling and referral for employment, Social Security and VA benefi ts and substance-abuse treatment. To fi nd a Stand Down in your area, check the VA’s Web site (www.va.gov) and put “stand down” in the search box. The page includes a list of locations, dates and contact info.

PAWS CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Teaching Puppy Not to BiteDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our family adopted a puppy just a few weeks ago. “Shep” is adorable and playful, but when we’re play-ing, he will nip at ours or kids’ fi ngers. Is this something he will grow out of? -- Sharon in Tallahassee, Fla.DEAR SHARON: When playing in the litter, puppies will often nip at each other, and this behavior often comes along with a puppy when he leaves the litter. However, it’s not acceptable for Shep to continue doing this. If it’s encouraged, he will playfully nip at the fi ngers of most anyone who pets him or plays with him, and in a grown dog it’s no longer considered funny or cute.To train Shep out of this behavior, signal to him that his biting is unacceptable. How do you do this? Easy -- when he starts nip-

ping at your fi ngers, say “No” or “Ouch” loudly, turn away and stop paying attention to him for about a minute. He’ll go a bit crazy to get your attention back, but after several repeats, Shep will make the connection -- if he bites or nips, your reaction will be negative. The entire family needs to be in on this training. You can’t be the only one turning away from Shep, as he’ll just bounce on over to the next family member and start up again. So explain it to the children and practice a few times. Now, how can your family play with Shep in a positive way that reduces biting or nipping? Toys, balls and braided tug chews are great ways to keep him engaged and work off his extra energy.Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Hormone Changes Can Generate Migraines

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter, who is 41, has been getting really bad migraine headaches just before her periods. Is it due to menopause? -- V.M.

ANSWER: Her headaches are not due to menopause. They come from her menstrual cycle, and they’re called menstrual migraines. A migraine sufferer often can identify things that give rise to a headache -- foods, alcohol, physical exertion, too little sleep, too much sleep, hunger, bright lights and loud noise. For quite a few women, menstrual periods trigger the headache. The sudden drop in the female hormone estrogen that takes place at the time of a menstrual period precipitates headaches in these women.Your daughter can take medicine prior to her anticipated menstrual period to prevent the headache. Naprosyn or one of the many other nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs, taken two days before the pe-riod begins, often can avert menstrual migraines. They should be taken for as long as the headache has lasted in the past.Another approach is birth-control pills. The ones that stop periods for six months to a year are particularly useful. Seasonale and Lybrel are two such preparations. Most migraine sufferers are aware of the triptan drugs -- medicines that have had a huge impact on migraine treatment. There are seven such drugs, and I won’t mention them all. Maxalt and Relpax are two of these drugs. The triptans should be used as the anti-infl ammatory drugs are used -- two days before onset of periods and continued for the length of the usual migraine. The headache booklet describes the common kinds of headaches and their treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue --

No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 21-year-old grandson has weighed 130 pounds for the past six years in spite of drinking protein shakes, tak-ing weight-gain pills and eating rich, calorie-laden foods. He is 6 feet 1 inch tall. Why can’t he gain weight? His self-esteem is zero be-cause of his appearance. He loves to swim but is ashamed to appear in bathing trunks.A doctor told him to live with it. Is that the answer? Any help you can give will be appreciated. -- D.T.

ANSWER: Your grandson isn’t on the lean side. He is truly skinny. If this isn’t a family trait, it needs to be looked into more seriously.Malabsorption syndromes should be considered. These are illnesses where nutrients cannot pass through the intestinal wall into the body. Celiac disease is an example. There are many more. Granted, most of these illnesses have other symptoms but, at times, those other symptoms can be so mild that they’re ignored.Trouble with endocrine glands is another possibility. The thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, the testes and the ovaries have important roles in growth and development.Genetic illnesses constitute a group of disorders that can manifest with nutritional signs.I have many pat answers on how to gain weight. Your grandson needs more than pat answers.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newslet-ters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

It sounds silly, but deer are actually

aged by checking their teeth, not by counting the points on their antlers. A trained biologist looks at both the type of teeth the deer has as well as how worn they are.

PHOTO: Rookie Joey Logano, who took over the No. 20 for Joe Gibbs Racing when Tony Stewart left to run his own team, is still trying to make the transition from Nationwide to Cup racing. (Photo: John Clark/NASCAR This Week)

Logano Struggling in Sprint Cup

Joey Logano is struggling as a rookie in the Sprint Cup Series, which really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, since

Logano is all of 18 years old.Ever since Mark Martin began raving about this kid who is destined to win championships -- Logano was 13 or so at the time -- Logano has been widely regarded as a star of the future. He had to wait for his 18th birthday -- he’ll turn 19 on May 24, by the way -- to race in the Nation-wide Series for the fi rst time. He won his third race, at Kentucky Speedway.Logano became the fi rst driver to win more than once at the age of 18 with his Pepsi 300 vic-tory at Nashville Superspeedway. In his rookie Sprint Cup season, though, the Middletown, Conn., native has struggled. He ranks 35th in the point standings.Asked how much the Nashville victory meant, Logano said, “More than you think, that’s for sure. It’s been a long time coming since Ken-tucky last year, and we should have won a lot

more. To get this is what this whole team need-ed.”Logano bears the heavy burden of driving Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 Toyota in Sprint Cup. The number -- and team -- earned fame with Tony Stewart, who won championships in 2002 and 2005. Logano was named as Stewart’s re-placement when the veteran star took the role of both owner and driver at Stewart Haas Rac-ing.In the current confi guration, Cup cars are much more diffi cult to drive than their Nationwide Se-ries counterparts. Logano is still trying to make the transition. But winning is important for any young driver’s psyche.“It’s big for me,” said Logano. “It’s an awesome confi dence booster, for sure. Looking and say-ing, ‘Hey, I can do this; I am here for a reason; I can win races.’ That’s big. Just to reassure yourself of that.“I’m sure this is just going to keep carrying on, and now we just have to build on this momen-tum and keep going.”***Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was

named writer of the year by the National Mo-torsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots mu-sic and life on the road. E-mail Monte at [email protected].

GOD’S CLOSETGod’s Closet is a community non-profi t ministry serving the families of Spokane. The basis of this giving minisrty consists of a donation network whereby individuals, fami-lies and businesses within our community are invited to donate gently used and new childrens clothing (up to size 12) and infant/child related items at any time throughout the year to God’s Closet. One weekend per quarter God’s Closet will open for parents and guardians of children in the Spokane area to come “shop for FREE” , with the ex-ception of a $1.00 admission fee, from our selection of donated supplies. Currently we are accepting gently used childrens clothing (up to size 12) and baby items to donate to our community. If you have any items that are gentley used, and that can be re-used by someone else, then we need to hear from you now! Our next event is scheduled for:
