Don’t Try This With a CatDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a neighbor in my apartment building who I

occasionally see carrying his little Pekingese outside, setting her on the side-walk and holding her by the tail as he encourages her to “go.” He’s a very niceguy, and other than this unusual method is kind to his dog, but I think this is avery inappropriate way to handle a dog. Is there anything I can do to help thislittle dog? — Concerned in Framingham, Mass.

DEAR CONCERNED: Communication is the best way to deal with any per-ceived problem. If he’s a nice guy and you have spoken with him before, comedown and say hello to him when he’s outside with his dog. Ask if you can pet thedog.

You’ll want to broach the subject of the tail-holding during the conversation.Ask him if he has a leash for the dog and why he doesn’t use it. There may be areason why — such as the dog not behaving well while on the leash.

If behavior is an issue, ask what kind of leash he’s using. Some dogs do betterusing a harness-type leash, because it fits them more comfortably than a collartype. There’s also a lot of advice available to help owners train their dogs tobehave on the leash, so perhaps you can get him a book on the subject or, if youown a dog, offer pointers.

Some owners don’t put a leash on their dog because they claim not to have thetime. If this is the reason, gently remind him that the leash is for the dog’s safetyand that it may help her “go” more comfortably than the current method.

In any case, keep the conversation light and casual, or at least polite. Strikingup a friendship can be rewarding for your neighbor, youself and his dog.

Michael Waltrip seems to be building afirst-class NASCAR team, but he will nolonger lead the charge from behind thewheel.

A winner of four official races (andwhat is now the

Sprint All-Star race) and four poles in his SprintCup career, Waltrip will compete in only a fewraces as a driver this year. He will turn over hisNAPA Chevrolet to Martin Truex Jr., with theToyota’s number changing from 55 to 56. Waltripwill enter his own No. 51 at Daytona InternationalSpeedway in the Budweiser Shootout and Daytona500.

“When I think about going to Daytona, I get ex-cited because I know how to win that race,” saidWaltrip, who won the 500 in 2001. “I finished sev-enth at Talladega this past October and seventh inthe Daytona 500 last year. I know I can go winthat race, and that makes me smile.

“When I think about California and Vegas, I justhaven’t performed at the level that makes me say,‘I’m going to go out there and do the same thing.’”

Michael Waltrip Racing fields Toyotas for Truex,David Reutimann and, by a cooperative arrange-ment, Marcos Ambrose. The team is co-owned byWaltrip and Robert Kauffman.

Reutimann nearly made the Chase for the SprintCup last year and gave MWR its first victory inone of NASCAR’s more prestigious races, theCoca-Cola 600 at (now) Charlotte Motor Speed-way. Waltrip said he expects at least one of hisdrivers to make the Chase this year.

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

You can’t open the newspaper or turn on the televisionnowadays without reading or hearing about cell phones caus-ing brain cancer. One state is even about to require that warn-ings be placed on the phones. It’s almost enough to make youstop using them.

There have been multiple studies around the world withconflicting and contradictory results. Can cell phones causebrain cancer? The jury is still out.

On the other side of the coin, there are some very goodreasons for seniors to have a cell phone, not the least of whichis being able to contact someone if there’s an emergency whenyou’re out driving.

If you’re running late for an appointment, isn’t it easier topick up your cell phone and call than to drive up and downthe street looking for a pay phone? And what if you needdirections?

Now we find that there might be a plus to cell phone use:The phones might protect against Alzheimer’s disease. A studydone with mice by the University of South Florida’sAlzheimer’s Disease Research Center indicates that exposureto the electromagnetic waves of cell phones might even re-verse memory problems. Those waves, it seems, break apartthe brain plaque accumulation that is part of Alzheimer’s dis-ease. Not only that, but in the study, the memory levels ofnormal mice increased. Researchers wonder if exposure toelectromagnetic fields could actually be a treatment forAlzheimer’s in humans, and they are currently working onthat.

Still, there’s nothing that says you have to talk on the cellphone all the time. And now, with this new Alzheimer’s re-search, maybe there’s a reason to keep the phone.

Do you dread having to buy your nextTV, not because of the price but becauseof the new technology? If you haven’tbought a new television in quite a fewyears, your best bet is to get up to speedon what’s out there.

The two big choices now are plasma orLCD televisions.

LCD TVs have the widest range of sizesand are good for rooms with a lot of light. When shopping for an LCD TV, you’ll seedescriptions such as 32-inch class/720p or

New TV TechnologyCan be Confusing

40-inch class/1080p.Plasma TVs are subject to glare from windows

and look best in low- to normal light. They’regood for fast-action sports and video games.Plasma TVs will have descriptions such as 50-inch class/1080p or 42-inch class/720p.

That “p” number is one to watch, because itdenotes the resolution. Each “p” number is thenumber of lines on the screen. If you play a lotof video games, the 1080p will likely work betterfor you. If you only watch television, the 720should be sufficient, as many shows are onlybroadcast at 720p, depending on your cableprovider.

Check your available space before buyinga new television, especially if you’re not goingto hang it on the wall. The new screens arewider but not as tall. Measure the height andwidth of your current television screen beforeyou go shopping. Take a tape measure withyou.

Consider the size of your room and viewing

distance. Measure from your TV to whereyou usually sit, and take that informationwith you when you shop.

Check with your cable provider to see ifyou already get an HDTV signal or if you’llneed to upgrade your package.

One place to look online for help indeciding between plasma and LCD isBestBuy.com. It understands that the newtechnology can be confusing and hasdeveloped a section of the Web site to helpyou not only understand, but to select a TVwithin your price and size requirements. Tofind the information, go to the site, click theTV and Video button, click TV on the left sidelist, then select HDTV Basics to learn more,or Help Me Choose to narrow your choices.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is it possible to get wetmacular degeneration from a scratch on the lefteye during cataract surgery, or could it have beena cyst that caused wet macular degeneration? Iam 85, and my right eye is perfect. I had cataractsurgery on that eye also. — C.

ANSWER: A scratch on the eye isn’t likely tocause macular degeneration. The possibility of cata-ract surgery leading to macular degeneration is aremote one. More than 6,000 people who had hada cataract removed were followed for five yearsafter the operation. Slightly more people who hadthe operation developed macular degeneration, dryor wet, in the operated eye than did a similar groupof people who had not had an operation.

This isn’t proof that cataract surgery leads tomacular degeneration. The same risks that causecataracts also cause macular degeneration. Thenumbers that do develop it after cataract removalare small. A cause-and-effect relationship has notbeen proven.

I am not clear what you mean by a cyst causingthe degeneration. In what part of the eye was thecyst? I have not seen a link between cysts andmacular degeneration.

that can be transmitted to the brain sowe can see. The macula is a small, round area ofthe retina where there’s an aggregation of cells thatare essential for central vision — the kind of visionneeded to read a paper, watch TV and drive.

Dry macular degeneration, accounting for 85percent to 90 percent of cases, is a wasting away ofmacular cells. Wet macular degeneration resultsfrom a sprouting of blood vessels in that region. Those newly formed blood vessels leak fluid anddestroy macular vision. Procedures are availablethat can halt the progression of wet macular degen-eration.

The booklet on macular degeneration explainsboth kinds and what is available to help those withthis common eye problem. • • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I need some basic facts

about the pulse. First, what’s considered a normalrate? I have trouble finding my pulse. I feel all overmy wrist, but it’s hard for me to detect. Is there someother place where I can feel it better? — C.M.

ANSWER: The pulserate and the rate of theheartbeat are one andthe same. When theheart beats, it ejectsblood into arteries. Theforce of that ejectionruns down all arterywalls and is the pulse

beat. A normal pulse (or heart rate) is 60 to 100beats a minute.

You feel the pulse on the thumb side of the wrist.Maybe you’re pressing too hard and obliterating it.If you can’t find it there, you can feel it in the neck, slightly below the angle of the jaw. Or you can putyour hand over your heart and count the heartbeats.
