• It was American science-fiction author JohnThomas Sladek who made the followingobservation: “The future, according to somescientists, will be exactly like the past, onlyfar more expensive.”

• Although they’re not as much in fashionthese days as they have been in the past, you certainly know what sideburns are — butyou may not know where the term camefrom. It seems that Ambrose Everett Burnsidewas a rather indifferent general for the UnionArmy during the Civil War, suffering adisastrous defeat at the Battle ofFredericksburg. Despite his lack of militarygenius, however, he was rather notorious —for the enormous bushy facial hair he wore.

Eventually his lastname, slightlymorphed, becamethe generic word forsuch a pattern offacial hair.

• If you’ve never seen an example ofLeptotyphlops carlae, don’t be surprised —the species of threadsnake seems to be foundonly on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Theanimal’s claim to fame is that it is the world’ssmallest snake, measuring only 4 inches longwhen fully grown and achieving a girth aboutthat of a spaghetti noodle.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it possible to include apet in your will? I saw all the controversy about LeonaHelmsley’s dog inheriting her money on TV. I’m notrich at all, but I do want my two Chihuahuas and myparakeet “Bobby” to be well cared for if I should passbefore them. — Beryl in Ormond Beach, Fla.

DEAR BERYL: It is possible and, in fact, recom-mended. The American Pet Products ManufacturersAssociation estimates that 69 percent of Americanhouseholds own at least one pet. Of the 2.4 millionAmericans who die each year, statistically, many ofthose who pass away are pet owners.

Even if we aren’t wealthy, we still leave stuff be-hind when we die, including (and especially) pets. Add-ing a pet to your will is important — it’s less aboutleaving the pet your money as it is about making sure

a pet will be cared for after you’re gone. The online estate-planning service ItsMyLife.com

(www.itsmylife.com) recommends that pets be pro-tected in writing, as part of your will. Verbal agree-ments can easily be forgotten.

The company is offering its “Pets Letter of Wishes”for free through Valentine’s Day, and its other estate-planning documents are available at a reasonable price.

You don’t have to go through a service — you canadd a provision for your pet in your existing will, orcreate a will, simply by writing out your wishes on pa-per and having a witness agree to and sign it. But Irecommend an attorney look over any will, regardlessof how or where it was made, to make sure it can becarried out with few problems.

Seniors process negative emotions differently fromyounger people. So says a study from Duke UniversityMedical Center, appearing in the January issue of Psy-chology Science.

The study included adults with average ages of 24and 70. Participants were shown photographs that theyrated on a “pleasantness” scale while hooked up to anMRI. Some of the photos were decidedly NOT pleas-ant: violent acts and mutilated bodies. Then each par-ticipant had to remember those pictures after the MRIwas over to determine whether or not the images thatcaused negative emotion could actually be recalled.

It turns out that seniors didn’t “connect” as much tothe photos that caused negative emotion, while the

Brainpower

younger participants registered high in that area, remem-bering more of the negative pictures.

I think this comes down to a “been there, done that”for seniors. Maybe at an instinctive level we feel thatwe don’t need to waste energy (or brain cells) on nega-tive emotions.

On another brain topic, researchers have come up withmore ways that we can retain memory function and staymentally sharp, confirming other research on the sametopic: Stay physically active, challenge the brain andstay socially active.

Exercise isn’t hard. Even if we’re cleaning house anddancing through the rooms as we do, we’re being ac-

tive. It’s a bonus if we take a fitness class or do dailywalking. Challenging the brain can actually be fun, ifwe’re doing the daily crossword puzzle and attendinginteresting lectures or films. Staying socially active canbe as easy as developing a network of friends and ac-quaintances whom we see or talk to on a regular basis.

Q: I have a Desert Storm commemorative plate. Ipicked it up at a flea market for $25. Did I get a gooddeal? — Bill, Waldron, Ark.

A: The Desert Storm commemorative plate issuedby Hamilton currently lists for about $40.

• • •Q: I have some Santa Clara Indian pots that date

from the teens and 1920s. I would like to have themappraised, but the professionals I contacted charge agreat deal for this service. Is it possible to find some-one who can help me who is more affordable? — Sue,Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: As I have often written in this column, a free orcheap appraisal is generally worthless. Your pots are

Desert Storm Plate

probably valuable, and you need a competent appraiserto determine just how valuable. If you can’t afford tohire a professional, then simply enjoy your pots for theirbeauty.

Two appraisers I especially recommend are MichaelHiggins, 4429 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85718;and Rick Rosenthal, Morning Star Traders, 2020 EastSpeedway, Tucson, AZ 85719. Both have national repu-tations for being knowledgeable in this field of collect-ing.

• • •Q: I have two figurines by Austin Pro-

ductions from 1957. I paid $100 for them. What are they worth now? — Joseph, SouthDaytona, Fla.

A: I checked eBay and found dozens ofAustin figurines available, includingBright Eyes ($14.99, one bid); two sculp-tures from 1971, 1975 ($20.50, eight bids);and The Thinker ($125, no bids). To findout the exact value of the two that you have, you should have an appraisal done.

• • •Q: During a trip to Germany, I found

and purchased a small collection of Victo-rian chocolate molds. Is there a referencebook for them? — Sally, Fenton, Mo.

A: One of the better references is theCollector’s Guide to Antique Chocolate

Molds, With Values, by Wendy Mullen (Hobby House).I found a copy available at www.abe.com for $45.

Surprising no one, Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway was the star of NASCAR’spostseason statistical review.

With the intricate drafts amping up speeds on race day, competitive laps exceeded 200mph in both the spring and fall races. The 2.66-mile track produced the fastest race speedsin all three major NASCAR series.

Jamie McMurray turned the fastest lap in the track’s April 27 race, averaging 201.64mph. On Oct. 5, Juan Pablo Montoya’s 200.56-mph lap was fastest.

By comparison, the fastest Daytona lap was Brian Vickers’ 192.15 on July 5, and thenext fastest track was Atlanta Motor Speedway, where Dale Earnhardt Jr. turned a 186.01lap on March 9.

Talladega’s fastest Nationwide Series lap was 198.15 mph by Kyle Busch on April 26,and Jason White turned a 195.81 mph Craftsman Truck Series lap on Oct. 4.

NASCAR’s so-called loop data monitors total passes, throughout the field, duringraces. In the October race, Talladega had 12,416 such passes, while the April event had9,146.

Next, once again, was the circuit’s other “restrictor-plate track,” Daytona, with 6,921passes on Feb. 17 and 5,697 on July 5. The Aug. 3 race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway featured4,636 passes through the field.

Track, Driver StatsAre Revealing

Through the “loop data,” more interesting facts emerged:• NASCAR’s “driver rating” is derived through a formula that weighs the data. Kurt

Busch had the largest decline in driver rating, falling 25.9 points from 99.7 in 2007 to73.8 in ’08.

• The most improved driver, statistically, was David Ragan, whose rating improvedfrom 56.1 in 2007 to 81.8. Next was Ragan’s Roush Fenway teammate Greg Biffle, whoimproved from 76.4 to 93.4.

• In the 2008 regular season, Kyle Busch’s driver rating was 112.0. In the Chase, hisrating fell to 83.4.

Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was namedwriter of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Peripheral Artery Disease

Common in Older Ages

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A commercial Isaw on TV had a grandparent andgrandchild talking about peripheral arterydisease. It got me wondering if I have it. Igot the idea that many older people do.I am 78. What are its signs? — K.M.

ANSWER: Peripheral artery disease, PAD,also goes by the name peripheralvascular disease. It is a common conditionin older people, but not every seniorcitizen has it. Close to 15 percent of thoseover 70 do.

Here “peripheral” refers to the legs.“Artery disease” is artery clogging, thesame process that goes on in heartarteries and culminates in a heart attack.High blood cholesterol, blood fats, bloodprotein and platelets aggregate on anartery wall, and as the buildup grows, itblocks circulation to the tissues fed by thatartery.

Blood doesn’t reach leg muscles in asufficient amount to support thosemuscles when they’re active. Thecommon sign of PAD is calf pain whilewalking. The pain leaves when the personstops walking. Many people with PAD cantell, almost to the inch, when the pain willbegin. The pain indicates leg musclesaren’t getting enough blood.

A simple office test to detect PAD is tocompare blood pressure taken at theankles with blood pressure taken in thearms. The two readings should be close. With PAD, the ankle blood pressure is lowerthan arm pressure due to the obstructionto blood flow.

Management of PAD is similar tomanagement of clogged heart arteries.Blood cholesterol has to be lowered, blood pressure normalized and bloodsugar controlled. Weight reduction, ifindicated, is important, as is daily exercise,— even though pain occurs duringwalking — has to become routine.Cigarette smoking, of course, is out of thequestion.

If the doctor does confirm a diagnosisof PAD, prescription medicines help bloodget around artery blockages.

Aspirin, Plavix and Pletal are examplesof such medicines. When the obstructionis sizable, then leg arteries can undergo

the same kinds of treatments as heartarteries — bypass surgery or stents.

The booklet on peripheral artery diseasediscusses this topic in detail and itstreatment. Readers can order a copy bywriting: Dr. Donohue — No. 109W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How soon after

taking medicine is it OK to drink alcohol?I say an hour is enough time. My wife thinksit should be four hours. Who is right? —B.N.

ANSWER: First you should make sure yourmedicine is compatible with alcohol. Some medicines aren’t. In that case, youshouldn’t drink alcohol at all while takingthe medicine.

It takes the stomach about four hoursto empty its contents. Medication, however, doesn’t stay in the stomach forthat long.

If your medicine is compatible withalcohol use, the answer is a compromise:You should be safe if you wait about twohours after taking it.
