• It was Canadian-born author and educator Laurence J. Peter who madethe following sage observation: “The man who says he is willing to meetyou halfway is usually a poor judge of distance.”

• Successful inventor and businessman Thomas Alva Edison received onlythree months of formal education, at a public school in Michigan.

• Those who study such things claim that the human skull can becompressed by 10 percent before the bone cracks. It begs the question, though: How did they test the hypothesis?

• Only male mockingbirds sing; the females of the species are silent.

• In 1740, a judge in an ecclesiastical court in France tried a cow — yes,an actual bovine — for sorcery. The poor animal was found guilty andsentenced to hang from the neck until dead.

• If you’re like the average American, you consumed more than 250 eggslast year.

• The first photograph of a United States citizen was taken in 1839. Thesubject was Samuel F.B. Morse, a painter who also happened to be theinventor of a single-wire telegraph system and developer of the MorseCode.

• You’ve probably never heard the term “univocalic”; it’s one of thosespecialized words used by those who study the English language. Theword refers to a piece of writing that uses only one of the vowels.“Strenghthlessness,” for example, is the longest one-word univocalic inEnglish.

• Experts say that in theUnited States, approximately 3.5 billiontons of soil are lost everyyear to erosion. That’senough to fill a freighttrain so long that it wouldcircle the globe 19 timesat the Equator.

Q. In your Dec. 8 column, you listed foods thatwere not good for dogs, among them avocadosand tomatoes. My Chihuahua loves avocados, tomatoes, broccoli and many other veggies (with-out salt, of course). Please tell me why avocadosand tomatoes are not good for them. — Diana, via e-mail

Q. I recently read your article on foods for dogsto avoid, and was curious about the tomatoes. Iraise miniature pinschers, and one day as I was

cutting up tomatoes I gave them some. I had twotomato vines out in my backyard and for the restof the summer I did not get any more of them, asthe dogs ate them as soon as they would start toripen. It never hurt them at all. I have heard ofchocolate but never tomatoes. — MaryAnn W., viae-mail

A. In dogs, tomato plants (leaves and stems)can cause tremors and heart arrhythmia (an irregu-lar, rapid or “fluttering” pulse); the fruit itself is

not listed as toxic by theHumane Society of theUnited States, but Iwould keep dogs out ofthe tomato patch at alltimes and feed them verylimited amounts of thefruit.

Avocados can causebreathing difficulties andfluid accumulation in thechest, abdomen andheart. All parts of theavocado - the fruit, the pitand the plant - are toxic. This fruit is also toxic tocats, birds, mice, rabbits, goats, horses and cattle.

A more complete listof toxic foods is availableat the Humane SocietyWeb site at http://www.hsus.org.

From the mail I get, I suspect that many seniors don’thave computers yet. Is this the year you’re going to getone or at least learn to use the ones at the library? Maybeit’s time for you to consider taking that big step. A com-puter can be a door to the whole world, in terms of theinformation and resources available.

Here are just a few things you can do on the Internet:• Design a Web site to show photos or to sell craft

items you’ve made.• Read newspapers from around the world.• Keep up with the latest health and weather infor-

mation.• Read books (many of them no longer in print) or

play puzzle games.

Is it time to usea computer?

• Learn more about your favorite hobby or find a newone.

• Research locations for your next vacation, completewith pictures and reviews by others who’ve been therebefore.

Here are two sites to get you started:Learn the Net [www.learnthenet.com] is a site that

walks you through every possible step on us-ing the Internet, including the all-importantWeb search. Master this and you’ll be able tofind all the information you want.

Seniors Guide to Computers[www.seniorsguidetocomputers.com] haswell-presented information, including secu-rity issues and e-mail basics.

A study done a few years ago concludedthat seniors who regularly use a computerexperience less depression and feel more con-nected to the world. The youngest participantsin the study were age 65, and the average agewas 80 years old.

Have I convinced you yet? If not, here’sone final reason to learn how to use a com-puter: Your grandkids are pros on theInternetm, and if you want to hear from them

more often, learn to send and receive e-mail. You’ll getmore photos that way, too!

Back in the days of actual racing, Dale Earnhardt Sr. knew how to get hispoint across — no matter how much it ran counter to NASCAR policy.

NASCAR has always been, at best, anenlightened dictatorship. For more thantwo decades, one of NASCAR’s most no-table policies was its relentless oppositionof efforts for anyone — drivers, owners, mechanics — to organize. Two great driv-ers, Curtis Turner and Tim Flock, wereonce banned from competition becausethey were involved in collective-bargain-ing efforts. The driver boycott of 1969crumbled in the face of NASCAR founderWilliam H.G. France’s stern resistance andrenunciation.

That doesn’t mean NASCAR doesn’tlisten, though. France’s successor and son,William C. France, was more the wheeler-dealer than his father. One man he listenedto was Dale Earnhardt. Now both are gone,

and the style of interaction has changed.Drivers like Dale Earnhardt and owners like Bud Moore used to storm into

the transporter and make their points with profane directness. I remember, backin the 1990s, when the fields were set at 43 cars, even on short tracks. Previ-ously, the fields at short tracks had been smaller.

En route what was then “the big red (Winston) trailer,” Moore told me BillyFrance wasn’t going to get away with that. Of Bristol, Moore said, “It ought tobe against the law to put more than two dozen cars on that #@*! pinball ma-chine.”

NASCAR did get away with it, but Moore got to make his points. Earnhardt, who once drove for Moore and revered the fiery old-timer, picked up a few tipsand added a few of his own. My favorite Earnhardt move was the way he firstgot his point across. He’d walk from his own team’s transporter to NASCAR’s

What’s changedsince Earnhardt’s

death

and just park there, right out in the open, signing autographs. For fans in thegarage area, it was like Christmas morning, and the mob would bring everythingat the NASCAR transporter to a standstill. The message would come down: “Allright, Dale. Billy says come on in.”

Nowadays, when a driver storms into the NASCAR transporter ... wait a minute... they don’t do it anymore. When they respectfully arrive, suitably polite and“professional,” the bone of contention is more likely to be an endorsement notbeing as financially rewarding as they had been led to believe.

NASCAR has roped in most of its critics. It has tied itself to them via thepatronage of endorsements, souvenirs and clothing, appearances and suggestionsthat it can toss the occasional sponsor their way. Drivers’ skill and magnetismmake them stars, but NASCAR is apparently pretty adept at getting across themessage, whether real or not, that it can make or break them.

And that’s just one more way the National Association for Stock Car AutoRacing has insulated itself from the actual racing.

Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer ofthe year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. You can e-mail Monteat [email protected].

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Swollen Ankles Usually

Treatable if Cause is Found

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I retain fluid in myankles and feet. They swell during the day. After a night’s sleep they’re normal size. I havetaken a diuretic for a whole year, but it’s nobetter. Why? My doctor has thrown his handsup at this. — M.P.

ANSWER: The swelling will get better only ifyou find its cause. If both feet and ankles areswollen, the possibilities include heart failure, kidney disorders, liver cirrhosis, medicines and, strangely enough, the overuse of diuretics(water pills). One-sided ankle and foot swellinghas another list of causes. The swelling getsbetter at night because when you’re in thehorizontal position, fluid returns to thecirculation.

With heart failure, people have othersymptoms — breathlessness when they’re upand about. Often, they awaken at night, panting for air.

Kidney disease is detectable with a fewsimple lab tests.

Liver cirrhosis can be confirmed by a physicalexamination and lab testing.

Medicines that cause swelling (edema)constitute a pretty long list. On that list are thepopular NSAID drugs, like Advil, Aleve, Motrinand Indocin. Female hormones also can bringon swelling. So can the blood pressuremedicines called calcium blockers.

Diuretics, when used for a long time and forinappropriate reasons, lead to fluid retention, just the opposite of what they’re supposed todo.

On your own, cut way back on salt, not just

saltshaker use but salty foods like luncheonmeats and commercial soups. Elevate yourlegs as many times during the day as you canand for as long as you can. Wear elastic hose.Ask your doctor if it would be all right to takea vacation from your diuretic. And have yougiven any thought to finding a doctor whokeeps his arms down?

The booklet on swelling — edema — explainsthis common condition, its causes andtreatments. To obtain a copy, write: Dr.Donohue — No. 106, Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order(no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with therecipient’s printed name and address. Allowfour weeks for delivery.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters,

but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.
