Viruses Sometimes Attack the HeartDEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had

the flu and called his doctor for medicine. Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was having a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart. I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have? How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it? -- R.R.

ANSWER: Your friend had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was first identified.

Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infection (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal disorder (stomach flu) might precede it. A young person -- and your friend is considered young -- struggling to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause.

Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one person to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus.

We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed, since nearly all Coxsackie infections are mi-

nor troubles. In cases like your friend's, medi-cines to keep the heart beating forcefully usu-ally can tide a

person over the dangerous period of heart failure.

Your friend's story is tragic.

The booklet on congestive heart failure describes the more com-mon kinds of it, not the kind due to viral infec-tions. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the reader's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

February 17 - 23, 2011

David Ragan needs a solid year. His job is likely riding on the outcome of the 2011 season.

The Unadilla, Ga., native is only 25 years old. A year ago, he finished 24th in the Sprint Cup point standings. The problem is that his No. 6 UPS Ford is a part of the Roush Fenway Racing stable, and his teammates -- Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle -- all finished sixth or better.

"We have a lot of expectations for this year," said Ragan. "The last couple years we have been real inconsistent, with a few runs here and there, but we could never get in a rhythm where we knocked off top-5 and top-10 finishes. That is what gets you in the Chase and gets the most points.

"We have got to run a lot of mistake-free races. The biggest thing is that we have our race cars really fast at Roush Fenway racing. I think the engine depart-ment is really prepared more so today than they have been in a couple of years. Our race cars are very nice and lightweight and seem to be very fast. That gives us a lot of confidence going into the year, and that is a good thing."

David's father, Ken Ragan, competed in 50 major NASCAR races in a career that spanned from 1983 through 1990.

"We all put pressure on ourselves because this is an important year for us and for our team," said David. "We want to get Ford back into victory lane and get UPS into victory lane. I want to win a Cup race very badly."

To date, the highlight of the junior Ragan's career was two Nationwide Series victories in 2009, both occurring at iconic tracks. He won at Talladega, Ala., and Bristol, Tenn.

Ragan gave the off-season paving project, which cost Daytona International Speedway more than $20 million, a rave review.

"In years past here at Daytona, you would get everyone really tight together for a few laps, and then, once the tires started to wear out, the cars would bounce around. ... Now all the cars are going to handle so well that everyone is going to be three by three, on top of each other, all day long. It will be a different Daytona 500 than you have seen in the past, and the last 20 or 30 laps will be totally insane," he said.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a 5-month-old Golden Retriever. I was wondering if you could give me any tips regarding "Saucy" biting and jumping up on people. How can I stop it? -- Crystal, Pensacola, Fla.

DEAR CRYSTAL: Jumping up and nonaggressive biting (or mouthing) are two of the most common undesirable behaviors among dogs. And because they're fairly instinctive actions, if you're not consistent with the way you deal with Saucy's behavior, the problems can continue indefinitely.

Fortunately, the solution to jumping and biting lies in basic obedience training, particularly in the sit-stay commands. Saucy should get obedience training at least once daily in addition to her twice-daily walks. (By the way, regular walks will dampen some of that excitability.)

To reduce jumping, note where and when Saucy tends to jump up the most. Is it at the door, greeting visitors? Train her in sit-stay next to the entrance, preferably in the same spot each time. When she responds well to "sit" and "stay," increase the difficulty by having another person ring the doorbell and come in. Command her to sit and stay if she stands, lunges at the door or does anything other than sit in the designated spot.

Mouthing, like jumping, is an absolute no-no, and should be treated as such. As Saucy's owner, each time she tries her biting routine, firmly but calmly say "no" and gently move her muzzle away. Then command her to sit and stay; when she obeys, give her a chew toy.

Now, puppies and even adult dogs tend to lapse a bit with these two be-haviors, especially when company is over. If you haven't got time for a train-ing session, use one of my favorite quick-correction methods: turn your back. For a playful dog, nothing is more disconcerting than someone indicating "I don't want to play with you." Use that moment of confu-sion to turn back around and command sit-stay. If Saucy doesn't follow instructions or is just too excited and distracted by guests, place her in a quiet room with her bedding and chew toys until your guests have left.
