LETTER FROM THE EDITORHey, how’s everyone doing out there? We’re all so glad to

see Summer arrive which really gets things heating up out there. Not just all of the events that are going on every weekend but the hot temps can put a serious toll on your body while you’re riding. Try to keep a bottle of water handy or make frequent stops to get some & wear lighter colored clothing, which will help refl ect the sun’s rays from baking you. Heat exhaustion on the bike is very real & it’s a serious threat to those venturing out into the scorching summer sun. Those of you who are seasoned riders are fully aware of all that but there’s a lot of very new riders taking to the streets that didn’t pick those tips up in their motorcycle safety classes. Ok – just wanted to mention that cause we’re always trying to look out for you & pass along ideas to keep you safe so you can enjoy your rides. The month will surely be fl ying by with everything that’s happening. Many of our advertisers have got it going on with some very cool things happening such as on June 1st & 2nd - Rockahock Campgrounds’ 3rd Annual Chickahominy Bike Classic, June 2nd Thunder Roads HD Anniversary Party & also on the 2nd is the Blessing of the Bikes Poker Run, June 8th is the Friday night Cruise In at Gangster Choppers, June 8th & 9th is the 12th Annual South Central Bike Fair, June 9th is Outlander’s Boot Scootin’ Boogie Biker Party, June 9th & 10th is Shenandoah’s HD Rallyin’ the Valley 3, The Old Dudes M/C Annual Susan G. Komen Poker Run, Jun 21st - 23rd The Virginia State HOG Rally, June 21st - 23rd is the 3rd Annual Rockahock’s James King Bluegrass Festival, June 22nd - 23rd ABATE of Virginia Annual State Rally, June 23rd Thunder Road HD Demo Day and June 24th is the 2nd Annual Anniversary Party, Bike Show & Benefi t for the Vets House. Our wonderful advertisers are what keeps us rolling each month so if you can make it out to support their events, they’d love to see you. Check out the calendar for all the details on these & the other things happening throughout the month. The Virginia State HOG Rally up in Williamsburg will be packing the area with thousands of bikers from all over the state. If you’re a HOG member, you won’t want to miss this one because they’ve got a full schedule fi lled with lots of fun, events & scenic rides. Come out & be a part HOGs N History! We love hearing from our friends so be sure to keep in touch & keep sending us those pictures for the Hot Shots – they’re great! We’re always here for you so let us know if there’s anything we can do to help out. We hope you all have a fantastic month out there on the roads & events. Happy Father’s Day on the 17th to all of you daddies. We wish you all safe travels on the roads, much happiness in your lives & lots of love in your hearts. Until next month

Happy Trails…

Kelly

By KentIt’s a time where patriotism has come to the forefront of our consciousness and many of us are displaying our fl ags in support of our country. There are a few things to know when you proudly set out our national colors. The table below contains a condensed version of the US Code, Title 36, 171-177 The Flag of the United States of America. See the link at the bottom of the page for com-plete fl ag protocol.

When to fl y your fl ag

Sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary fl agstaffs in the open. The fl ag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. The fl ag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather fl ag is displayed.

Your fl ag outdoors

On a vehicle.Attach to your antenna or to the right fender. DO not lay your fl ag over your vehicle. From a window sill, balcony, or the front of a building. The union (stars) of the fl ag should be placed at the peak.Over a side walk from a rope. The fl ag should be hoisted out, union fi rst, from the building. Hanging over the middle of a street.Suspend vertically with the union to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.Hanging with other fl ags.If on the same fl ag pole, hang the US fl ag above other fl ags. If on separate, but equal height poles, hang the US fl ag on its own right and hoist and lower it fi rst. If on separate, but unequal height poles, hang the US fl ag in the center and on the highest pole.In a window. The fl ag should be displayed with the union or blue fi eld to the left of the observer in the street.Against a wall. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the fl ag’s own right.

Across a corridor or lobby in a building with only one main entrance. The fl ag should be suspended vertically with the union of the fl ag to the observer’s left upon entering. Across a corridor or lobby in a building with more than one main entrance. The fl ag should be suspended vertically near the center of the corridor or lobby with the union to the north, when entrances are to the east and west or to the east when entrances are to the north and south. If there are entranc-es in more than two directions, the union should be to the east.

Covering a casket

Place the union at the head and over the left shoulder. The fl ag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

Respect for fl ag

The fl ag should not be dipped to any person or thing. The fl ag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the fl oor, water, or merchandise. The fl ag should never be carried fl at or horizontally, but always aloft and free. The fl ag should never be used as wearing apparel, bed-ding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. The fl ag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fi tting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a digni-fi ed way, preferably by burning.

Pledge of allegiance to the fl ag

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Na-tion under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.For complete information, see http://www.access.gpo.gov/uscode/uscmain.html

THE ONLY FLAG THAT DOESN’T FLY Between the fi elds where the fl ag is planted, there are 9+ miles of fl ower fi elds that go all the way to the ocean. The fl owers are grown by seed companies. It’s a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB. Check out the dimensions of the fl ag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions, as described in Executive Order #10834. This Flag is 6.65 acres and is the fi rst Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed Stars, comprised of White Larkspur. Each Star is 24 feet in diameter; each Stripe is 30 feet wide. This Flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants, with 4-5 fl ower stems each, for a total of more than 2 million fl owers. Ocean Ave. in Lompoc, CA! . May 10-13, 2007Charlotte, NCwritten by: toni mccoy shearon, as storied by: brian shearon

Received a call from Bill Bish, who we’ve known from doing many rallies together over the years.

Bill handles the major P.R. “stuff” for NCOM and is MC at most main events. He’s a good guy.

Bill informed us that we, THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE®, were the winners of the 2007 Silver Spoke Media Contribution Award. Hell, we didn’t even know we were amongst the nominees. But, it’s always good to be a winner of just about anything except a Butt-Ugly Contest, so when asked if we could attend the Convention to accept our award, we marked it on the road schedule.

I was anxious to use a new navigational system just purchased and Bill had said the Convention was being held at the Hilton in Charlotte, NC, so went online, grabbed an address and programmed it in. Come the day of departure this, that and the other cropped up (as usual) and it going to be Mother’s Day upcoming weekend, Toni decided to stay-put and maintain harmony at the “Thunderosa”, so me and my dad, Super B., trailered up the bikes and departed.

Danged if that little navi system didn’t take us straight to the door…of the wrong Hilton. I called the office and got the actual address off the flyer Bill had sent, and again, the navi got it right. (these nifty little gadgets are only as good as the human input). We arrived at the correct Hilton and it was so cool to walk into the lobby and see bu-ku bikers mingling about and all of them leafing thru a Thunder Roads. We had contacted all of our states……all 20 of them, and requested they send mags in advance because this IS a major, national, annual Convention.

This Hilton locale is so strategically and beautifully laid out. It is surrounded by a circular canal, like a castle, and then this shopping mecca is on the other side of the canal. A virtual shopper’s paradise (Toni would be sad she missed this shop-opp.); every big name store you could possibly think of was here.

Very impressive. I unloaded my bike and took off to explore, forgetting that I had drained the gas out of it back at my home garage while working on the tank and YES…….I ran out of gas and had to flag a brother down to

assist (lucky for me the place was nothing but bikers). I called Toni and she started laughing as I’ve been known to run out of gas before on such illustrious runs as Natchez Trace and various toy runs across TN. She reminded me of my nickname: “Outa-Gas”.

Back at the Hilton and time to work the lobby:

Met up with Pastor Ron Baptiste, who runs our local biker church and free clinic back in Tennessee. Got to meet Attorney Richard M. Lester, the Founder of NCOM, along with other key peeps of AIM, Abate and NCOM. The hotel was also filled with various high-ranking members of various motorcycle clubs throughout the United States so of course, the “no pictures” rule was asked, expected and enforced.

There are numerous meetings scheduled throughout this Convention to which any of the invitees may attend and the agenda was extremely current and interesting; Freedom Of The Road And The Use Of The Courts, Confederation of Clubs General Patch Holders Meeting, Black Clubs & Minority Outreach, Women In Motorcycling. I don’t want to trivialize a single minute of this vital Conference, so please, go to:

www.aimncom.com for a complete and comprehensive narrative of exactly what selected topics were up for discussion.

I’m going to fast forward thru all the days of meetings and networking to bring you up to Saturday night, May 12th, which was the scheduled Silver Spoke Awards Banquet. The massive convention hall we had been utilizing for meetings had been transformed into a stunning presentation of black/white draped tables, a room-length podium presentation table at the front of the room and various plants and flowers I hadn’t noticed in the days past of meetings. Again…….very impressive and first-class coordinated. Super B. and I were instructed to sit at the podium table so we went all the way to the very end about that time, Tommy Thompson, Former Governor of WI sat down next to me and this guy is immediately a likeable cuss, plus funny to boot. Bill Bish, as M.C., stepped up to the mike and began regaling about “how in 8 short years Thunder Roads Magazine, being founded by Toni and (myself) had grown into (20) separate editions across this great United States and how Brian had called Super B. back in 1999 to say that he and Toni were “coming home” to start a biker publication and Super B. had said, “what the hell do you know about putting out a magazine?” and Brian replied, “well, not a damn thing, but we’re willing to

take a chance and learn”. Super B. said, “well, they sure proved a lot of people wrong.” I then took the stage to accept this stunning plaque and suddenly felt so humble. I stood proud and told everyone in that room, which were 1,200 or so heads, how “we may have been the Founders of Thunder Roads Magazine and had the initial vision, but we were truly blessed to have had State Editor Owners who shared in our vision and wanted nothing less for Thunder Roads than to make it “the Real biker”, informative and biker-user-friendly magazine that it is today, with all the flavor of the state that it’s published within.” I thanked all the Board of Directors for nominating the Thunder Roads Magazine® and also whomever was the electing force behind us winning and that this Award would hang proudly in our office from this day forward.

Tommy Thompson was awarded a Silver Spoke for Government involvement, Mitch Promer/AIM Attorney for Legal with Special Recognition going to Barbara Alvar, Abate of NM, Carmaletta Lara, Abate of OK and Patti Nasrallah, Abate of FL. Ron Roloff, one of the Abate founders, received the Silver Spoke Lifetime Achievement Award.

In closing, I’d just like to say that this was a privilege to attend this Conference and if you are not familiar or aware of the NCOM for your region, please go to the website and get involved because this organization is there for all of us bikers and it represents our views and our beliefs of freedom of choice and family unity thru the love of motorcycling. Thank you ALL for your hospitality and hopefully, a Thunder Roads State Editor Owner will be in the running for next year’s award convention being held in Houston,Texas. J

Vertigo Tattoo’s OBX Bike Rally 2007April 27th – 29th

We didn’t make it there for the Friday events, but Saturday turned out to be a wonderful day for a ride. At 6 am the fog rolled in across the Outer Banks and you couldn’t even see across the parking lot. Then as quick as it appeared, it was gone. The sun shone bright, the winds were mild and off we went. We took the “old” bridge in Manteo, what a wonderful ride! This year’s rally proved to be one of the biggest yet. The HOG Rally was in town and the number of bikes was mind boggling. Vertigo always puts on a great fund raiser for the Mann Harbor Fire Dept. and this year was no exception. They had a great selection of vendors – J & J Leather, Island Off-Road, Clockman’s Custom Motorcycle Tribal and Alcoholics Clothing, just to name a few. Of course no party is complete without a couple Bike Builders…Gangster Choppers of Richmond, King’s of Cloverdale, VA. and FREE BEER!One of the most unusual participant in the Sunday bike show was Quenton Guenther, of Kitty Hawk, NC and his Whizzer Motorbikes. Manns Harbor Fire Dept. had great food and it is always a pleasure to donate to such a worthy cause. Thanks Fire fi ghters for all you do.

Always enjoy your ride,Bo Albert

Running problems due to fuel:Now that we have brought our babys out of the garage and have cleaned them up, checked tire pressure, oil levels, and battery condition, we’re ready to ride. You start her up and she is slow to fi re. You check the gas and it’s a little low but there is plenty in her that she should fi re. You do this a couple of times and she lights up (you let out in relief) but she is running a little rough. You suit up and get on for that beautiful day ride, run the gas down because it has been in there all winter and put a fresh tank in but she still isn’t quite right. A little puzzled, you stop by your local shop and ask what is going on. The shop takes her in, does a couple of diagnostics and lets you know that your carburetor needs to be rebuilt and for you import riders this also includes carb syncing. “What caused this?” you ask. Did you make sure that your fuel tank was full in the beginning of winter and did you add fuel additive ( purchased at your local shop)? No, but you started it every once in a while, (which is great for circulating your oil through the system, but I’ll save that for another tip). The government and EPA has made it almost impossible to fi nd fuel that does not contain ETHANOL. Well, I’ve seen and had to fi x too many bikes that have this running problem .When your baby sits for a long time, the ethanol likes to eat fuel lines, seals and gunks up your carbs and petcock and any jet or passage. Carb cleaning will run you anywhere from $70 -$230 which doesn’t include the price of a rebuild kit, if needed due to the seals being worn out (usually this is with the older bikes), but you need to get it done. Import riders, make sure that when you take it in for the cleaning, that you get the carb’ synced as well. If you don’t, the bike will run but it’ll be rough still. This is an unfortunate thing to have to deal with but unless you fi nd a gas station that does not use Ethanol you’re going to run into this issue. It’s a shame that they make you buy a gas that causes harm to your vehicle and they don’t allow for you to be compensated for it. So, don’t buy Ethanol gas if possible because your bike will run better and last longer.

EARLY’S CYCLE CENTER OPEN HOUSE Harrisonburg, VA May 4th & 5th, 2007

The fi ne folks at Early’s Cycle Center, Harrisonburg, Va., rolled out all the bikes, ATV’s, 3 brands of scooters and invited folks over for food, fun and demo rides - a perfect combination. There was a youth ride area lined with bales of straw for the younguns to ride while the parents en-joyed pizza, BBQ, or some hot dogs. Star Riders from Winchester and Mountain Valley Riders had tents set up and info on their respective clubs. Yamaha had a representative on hand for detailed product info along with several other after market part suppliers displaying their accessories. A number of folks took advantage of the discounts offered during the open house with Penny Halterman on her R6 to Lisa Keagy and Susan Micheal on V Stars and 76 yr old Paul Kingston’s Road Star and several others getting new homes that weekend. Sheldon Early has been in the motorcycle business in Harrisonburg since 1961 with purchasing a BSA and Cushman dealership then added Triumph, Norton and Moto Guzzi to the sales fl oor. In 1968, impressed by a new import and to diversify his sales offering, he added the Yamaha line of then 2 stroke bikes. Besides his successful sales, there is a devoted long term staff with 3 employees being with the dealership over 33 years and 5 more for over 15 years. Mr. Early’s true interest in motorcycling was 1/4 mile drag racing a 1950 BSA from 1960 to 1963 which he still owns and is on display at the dealership. The 1950 BSA A7 was tuned to run alcohol or a 90% Nitro mix with 10 1/2 to 1 forged pistons and Joe Hunt magneto. Mr. Early ran 1/4 mile speeds at 112mph and low 12’s E.T. The bike weighs 275 lbs. Be sure to visit Sheldon, Sam, Tim and Woody at Early’s, located at 1921 South High Street, Harrisonburg, VA, (540) 433-2585 or on their website www.earlyscycle.com and check out the selection of new or used bikes and scooters, and get some 2 wheeled history with the 1950 BSA.

5th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week™Riders say YES! to Cruizin the Outer Banks!

Outer Banks, N.C… In its fi fth year Outer Banks Bike Week™ kept all of its promises and even some it didn’t make, perfect weather and the largest group of riders the area has ever seen. Outer Banks Bike Week™ is spon-sored by the three dealerships in the area, Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson, Nags Head Harley-Davidson and Outer Banks Harley-Davidson.The rumble of motorcycles was constant up and down the roads of these barrier islands, normally a quiet beach com-munity. But it was evident from the “Welcome Bikers” banners everywhere from Granby in Currituck County to the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head in Dare County and across the bridges to the islands of Manteo, Manns Har-bor , Hatteras and Ocracoke that the Outer Banks embraced this rally with open arms. The hotels, retail shops and restaurants, were all im-pressed with our “gentleman and lady bikers” and were appreciative of the number of riders that had come to the Outer Banks for the fi rst time. At the time of this article the Outer Banks Tourism Bureau and the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce were still collecting data on what they foresee as a very positive impact on the economy for the week and how these new visitors will impact the economy in the future. The Outer Banks HOG Chap-ter sponsored the NC State HOG (Harley Owner’s Group) Rally which was awarded to this area for the fi rst time. The rally did much to bring in new riders, not only from the state of North Carolina but from all over the country during Bike Week. The event was listed in HOG Tales, a Harley-David-son Publication which goes out to more than 700,000 Harley owners throughout the country. There was some small confu-sion at the beginning of the rallies, as riders were trying to get information about events that were overlapping during the week. But in the end the bikers loved all the choices for riding and other Bike Week and HOG Rally activities. Dessie, one of the greeters at Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson, said she met people from all over the country including Germany and Finland . One rider told her “Outer Banks Bike Week™ is even better than Day-

tona!”All the Harley® dealerships in the area were jam-packed. The brand new full service Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson had the Harley-Davidson Demo Fleet Truck with demo bikes going out both Saturday and Sunday. The demo rides had to be curtailed for a few hours on Saturday because of the extremely heavy motorcycle traffi c, but resumed in full force on Sunday, thanks to the help of our friends in local law enforcement.

Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson had a vendor row, which included Indian Larry Legacy Choppers with builder Paul Cox. Regional bands, Gato-rHead and 54 Steps enter-tained the crowd with Classic and Southern Rock favorites while the Bikini Contest held on Saturday, had 11 incred-ibly beautiful girls vying for the title of Miss Outer Banks Bike Week. A very stunning Heather Ambrose, the crowd favorite, won the title.A Harley® Road King sport-ing a cool ghost fl ame paint job, t-bars and lots of chrome

won the top award at the Bike Show held at Nags Head Harley-Davidson which was hosted by the Outer Banks Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. Vendor rows were staged on the beach road next to Port O’ Call Restaurant and at Jeanette’s Pier and featured everything from life size eagle nests by Covered Bridge Creations to exquisite silver jewelry by Fine Global Arts. The Offi cial Party Host Restaurants, Kelly’s, Port O’

Call, Lucky 12 Tavern, Outer Banks Brewing Station and Dirty Dick’s all did a great job handling the many bikers who came out for the camaraderie and fun. One rider dressed up as a pirate, was surrounded by gorgeous women. He said “I don’t drink, but I do know how to have a good time!”Additional sponsors of Outer Banks Bike Week™ were Elan Vacations, BB&T, Coke, Bud-weiser, Pirates Cove Marina, Barefoot Bernies, Slammin Sammy’s, High Cotton, Geico, Vertigo Tattoo and so many others. Outer Banks Bike Week™ couldn’t happen with-

out their support. Thank you!Rolling down the Beach Road on Sunday as the sun was going down, I noticed a few remaining riders chilling on the porch of Lucky 12 Tavern, so I stopped and joined them. I guess we all wanted to enjoy a few more hours in the Outer Banks. But we will return!

I’d like to share with you an email that was recently received about one of staff members, Rocky Angone - Reverend Rock. We’ve got an incredible staff here at Thunder Roads & I feel extremely blessed to have such a fi ne group of caring individuals who share the same genuine love and concern for our motorcycle communities as I do. I’m very proud to have you all here. Major kudos to you Rocky! Dear Kelly

I am writing to you about a good friend of mine, Rocky Angone. In 2003 my wife and I bought our fi rst Harley Davidson. We bought a Sportster from a local person and immediately began looking for a dealership that we could call home. We live in Farmville, Va. which is about half way between Richmond and Lynchburg. We visited dealers in these areas as well as north and south of our area. We heard of a fairly new dealership in Colonial Heights and in late July of 2003 we met Rocky Angone, who at that time was a salesman at Colonial Harley. We knew from the fi rst meeting that we had found a home and more importantly a friend.

I knew Rocky was a friend whether we bought a bike from him or not. In August we took delivery of a 2003 Wide Glide, sold by Rocky Angone. When Rocky left Colonial, we landed at South Rich-

mond Harley with him. I told you this so I could tell you that Rocky is a stand up guy and man of the Lord! You are very lucky to have a man of his integrity on your staff. My wife and I have really enjoyed his articles in your magazine and being a former military man myself, I appreciate his take on patriotic views and what he stands for. In today’s society where being “politically correct” seems more important than true morals, a man such as Rocky is a breath of fresh air. Please accept our thanks for printing a fi ne magazine

and know that we read and enjoy the articles very much. Our hat is off to you and your staff but especially to a true friend, Rocky Angone!!!

Thank You for your time.

UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY “Speeding Into The Future” was the theme for this year’s NCOM Convention, held in Charlotte, North Carolina, over Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-13, 2007 at the University Hilton. Another near-record crowd attended the National Coalition of Motorcy-clists’ 22nd Annual Convention, converging from virtually every state and representing most Motorcyclists’ Rights Organizations and Confederations of Clubs across the country. Hosted by the Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of North Carolina and the Confederation of Clubs of North Carolina, this annual conference draws promi-nent leaders in the bikers’ rights movement to a different location each year to discuss topics of concern to all rid-ers. Meetings, seminars and group discussions focus on safety issues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefi t our right to ride. This year’s agenda was packed with informative and thought provoking meetings such as the NCOM Board of Directors Meeting, NCOM Legislative Task Force Meeting, A.I.M. Attorney Conference, A.I.M. Chiefs of Staff Meeting, Christian Unity Conference, Clean and Sober Roundtable, Women In Motorcycling, SMRO President’s Meeting, Minority Outreach, and the ever popular and always inspiring Confederations of Clubs General Patch Holder Meeting. Seminars and workshops included “Government Grants – How To Write & Obtain”, “EPA Effects On Shops & Rid-ers”, “Freedom of the Road & Use of the Courts”, “Loud Pipes”, “Fourth Amendment – And Other Rights Under The Constitution”, “National Transportation Safety Board”, “5 Steps To Freedom”, and “NAFTA Superhighway”.Keith Ball, former editor of Easyriders magazine and founder of Bikernet.com, was entertaining and informative with his historical perspective on the roots of the bikers rights movement as the featured dinner speaker during the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. Silver Spoke Award recipients honored during the ban-quet were: MEDIA: Brian & Toni Shearon of Thunder Roads Magazine; GOVERNMENT: Tommy Thompson, former Secretary of Health & Human Services/former Governor of Wisconsin and Presidential hopeful; LEGAL: Mitch Proner, A.I.M. Attorney for New York & Connecticut; MERITORIOUS: Bill “Snap” Lines of the Patriot Guard Riders; and SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Barbara Alvar of ABATE of New Mexico; Carmaletta Lara of ABATE of Oklahoma; and Patti Nasrallah of ABATE of Florida. Receiving the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award was Rick Nail, past President of CBA/ABATE of NC and former member of the NCOM Board of Directors. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists was happy to welcome the following as new NCOM Member Groups: The Patriot Guard Riders, ABATE of the Garden State (NJ), BikePAC of Idaho, Freemasons Riding Club – National, Sovereign Riders MC, American Cruisers MC Chapters #56, #150, and #55, and the Southern California Biker Alliance. The 2007 Convention was dedicated to the memory of Karen Bolin of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, KC Mallady of ABATE of Florida, Marty Shultz of ABATE of Maryland and “Tank” of His Laboring Few Motorcycle Ministry. Next year’s NCOM Convention will be held May 8-11, 2008 in Houston, Texas at the Sheraton North at the George Bush

Intercontinental Airport. Call NCOM for further details at (800) 525-5355 or visit www.On-A-Bike.com. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION LABELS MO-TORCYCLE DEATHS “EPIDEMIC” The World Health Organization (WHO) recently expressed alarm over the growing number of accidents involving young people on motorcycles in Asia, warning that the situation has become a public health epidemic. The WHO noted that young motorcyclists make up a signifi cant percentage of injuries and fatalities among road users in many Asian countries, such as Cambodia and Malaysia. “Factors such as speed, no helmets, risk-taking behavior and drunk-driving contribute to the rising trend,” according to the WHO regional offi ce, which is based in Manila, Philippines. It suggested “simple measures” that could be taken to help make roads safer as the WHO marked observance of the fi rst United Nations Global Road Safety Week, April 23-29. These measures include setting and enforcing appropriate speed and blood alcohol limits, as well as introducing and enforcing mandatory seat belt, helmet and child restraint laws. SAFETY CHIEF SAYS HELMETS & RIDER TRAIN-ING SHOULD BE PROVIDED It’s time to make helmets and training standard equipment for motorcyclists, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters said during remarks to the Motorcycle Industry Council in Indianapolis on February 19th. Peters called on motorcycle manufac-turers to provide free or heavily discounted DOT-certi-fi ed helmets or rider safety training with the purchase of every new motorcycle sold in the United States. “Helmets and proper training are just as important as brakes or headlights when it comes to the well-being of motorcy-clists,” Secretary Peters said. “We shouldn’t be letting any customer take a bike out of the store without a helmet as part of the package. Safety shouldn’t have to be an option when purchasing a motorcycle.” Secretary Peters also said the Department of Transportation was “attack-ing” the challenge of motorcycle safety on several fronts. Last September, the Department awarded over $6 million in safety grants to states to support motorcycle safety. In addition, the Federal Highway Administration has estab-lished a Motorcycle Advisory Council to focus on making roads safer for motorcyclists and will continue work begun by the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration on a Motorcycle Crash Causation Study to identify why mo-torcycle crashes occur and fi nd ways to reduce the fatality and injury rates. MOTORCYCLE SAFETY STUDY BEING CONDUCTED The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has launched a mile-stone 3-year study to determine the effectiveness of peri-odic involvement in a series of motorcycle rider education and training courses. “The Longitudinal Study to Improve Crash Avoidance Skills” will study the crash-avoidance skills of motorcyclists who have taken a series of rider training courses, beginning with the MSF Basic Rider-Course, which is the learn-to-ride course, and graduates will be offered, via random sampling, three additional

training opportunities at periodic intervals throughout the study. “The MSF’s rider education and training system used in this study is built upon the principle of safety train-ing renewal,” said Dean Thompson, MSF director of com-munications. “We believe a rider’s decision-making and crash-avoidance skills can benefi t from being refreshed over time. It is important for riders to regularly refresh their knowledge, skills and risk management strategies. We’re strong advocates of lifelong learning.” Rider knowl-edge, skills, attitudes and experiences will be evaluated and measured over time. The University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center will provide an inde-pendent evaluation of research that will for the fi rst time take a comprehensive, fi eld-based look at the benefi ts of ongoing participation in a rider education and training sys-tem, and its subsequent effect on crash avoidance skills and real-world outcomes.

MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS -- COMING TO A STREET NEAR YOU Several cities in Massachusetts are working to keep motorcycle drivers safe on the roads in their communities. Last year, the Massachusetts Motor-cycle Association (MMA) requested a grant from the Auto Insurer’s Bureau to help fund the erection of motorcycle awareness signs, and Plymouth Rock Assurance Corpo-ration awarded a $15,000 grant to the MMA to purchase and install 500 2-by-8-foot signs, which read “Check twice - Save a life, MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE!!!!!”Representatives of MMA are seeking permission to install at least one sign per community. Over a hundred commu-nities are participating. According to Wendell Davis, MMA District II Coordinator, Massachusetts is on the cutting edge of motorcycle safety programs. “This sign will help not just motorcyclists, but pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., by making people more aware overall,” he said. Davis added that Massachusetts is unique in promoting such an active awareness program and that “Massachusetts is one of the few states where (motorcycle) registrations have gone up and deaths have gone down.”

SAUDIS BAN BIKES Earlier this year, Saudi Arabian of-fi cials increased security in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah for the annual Hajj by banning motorcycles. In an article titled “Reckless Bikers Risk Losing Rides”, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Saudi offi cials impounded 350 motorbikes during heightened security operations, telling Arabnews.com that the motorcycle ban was a response to problems related to hit-and-run accidents as well as thefts where criminals used motorcycles to navigate crowds and escape quickly. Motorcycles have also been banned because riders in past years have used them as unsafe, unlicensed, one-passenger taxis. Transportation services are in high demand during the Hajj, causing a problem with taxis and buses. Noise and pollution caused by motorcycles and scooters was also cited as a concern.

AFRICAN COUNTRY BANS WOMEN FROM BIKES The Nigerian state of Kano has banned women from riding commercial motorcycles, according to the offi -

cial News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), which warned that women who ride risk being arrested. “The sharia police, otherwise known as Hisbah committee, have concluded arrangements to commence enforcement of some aspects of the state’s sharia law as passed by the state House of Assembly,” the NAN said. The law bans women from riding commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okada in Nigeria, and also bars Muslim Okada operators from carrying women on their motorcycles. Other aspects of the sharia law that would be implemented include the ban on alcohol consumption, hard drugs and prostitution, the commander said. Kano, one of 12 states in Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north that adopted the strict Islamic law in 2000, is the fi rst to introduce segregated public transport. INDIA MAKES HELMETS COMPULSORY IN CITIES Wearing helmets is now mandatory within the city limits of six city corporation areas in the state of Bangalore, India, though one large city was exempted from the rule in view of the high daytime temperatures there. Passengers, or so-called pillion riders, are also exempted from the helmet requirement. The Karnataka High Court issued a direc-tive to the Government in 2003 to make the wearing of helmets mandatory for two-wheeler riders, and wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders is now mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act of the Centre. NEWS OF THE WEIRD: WOMAN CRASHES WHILE TEACHING DOG TO DRIVE A woman in Hohhot, the capital of north China’s Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the offi cial Xinhua News Agency announced. The woman, identi-fi ed only be her surname, Li, said her dog “was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive,” according to Xinhua. “She thought she would let the dog ‘have a try’ while she operated the accelera-tor and brake,” the report said. “They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car.”No injuries were reported although both vehicles were slightly damaged. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A billion is a diffi cult number to comprehend, but the following explanation may help put that fi gure in perspective: A billion seconds ago it was 1975, and the Vietnam War was grinding down.A billion minutes ago was nearly 2,000 years, during the time of Christ.A billion hours ago was over 112 thousand years, and our ancestors were still living in the Stone Age.A billion days ago it was 2.7 million BC, and hominids were learning to walk upright.A billion years ago earth’s ecosystem became fully formed, and the fi rst multi-cellular organisms appeared.A billion dollars ago was only 3 hours and 53 minutes, at the rate Washington spends it. DAMN SAMBack in the l980’s a friend of our Sales Manager, Beth Albert, gave her a l966, 305-CA77 Honda Dream. She rode the bike a couple times, but one day while out on the highway following behind her husband, she down-shifted and the shift lever just fell off. There she was 30 miles from home, stuck in 2nd gear. Well, it took her awhile to get back, but she made it. The bike was parked in the garage and there it sat, covered with boxes and dust and whatever else got thrown on top for the next 20 years. That was in Upstate New York and since she’d moved to sunny Virginia the bike had to be dealt with sooner or later. There was no place to store it so off it went on a trailer to North Carolina to her son’s garage to be stored up until now. Beth has decided that it’s time to give “Damn Sam” (she named the bike that since he broke down on her) a new lease on life!

Absolut Cycle Worx of Richmond has agreed to restore “Damn Sam”. Now the question arises as to whether this classic should be made original or just made pretty and run-able. Beth has decided to make the little Honda pretty, so lets see how it goes for the next few months as Jason Kincaid does his magic……..

COME TO PAPA - PULLED PORK BARBEQUE SAMMICHES

2 heaping Tbls. Ground Black Pepper2 heaping Tbls. Minced Garlic (prechopped in producedept. in small glass jars) 10 whole cloves (place in paper towel and roll over withrolling pin or heavy jar to smush up) 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 bone-in pork shoulder, (about 7 pounds) Salt to TastePreheat the oven to 275 degrees F.

In a small bowl combine garlic, and cloves and mix thor-oughly. Drizzle in the oil until a paste is formed. Using a rubber spatula, spread the garlic paste onto pork butt. Place the pork butt on a work surface and season all over generously with salt. Rub all over with the garlic paste. Place in an oven-safe roasting bag and close with a twist tie. Place in a large roasting pan, and cook until tender, about 5 hours. Remove roast from the oven. Slip the oven-roasting bag off the meat and discard. Transfer the cooking liquid to a medium saucepan. Skim the fat from the cooking liquid with a ladle. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and sim-mer to thicken the juices slightly. Raise the oven to 400 degrees F. Return the pork, in the roasting pan, to the oven. Continue roasting, basting frequently with the simmering cooking liquid, until well-browned, about 30 minutes. If there is any cooking liquid left, pour it over the pork. VINEGAR SAUCE FOR SIDE DIPPINGWhite distilled vinegar, as neededRemove pork from the oven and let it rest at room tem-perature for 10 minutes. With the pork drippings you may make a vinegar sauce using this formula: for every 1/2 cup of drippings, whisk with 3 tablespoons vinegar and 1/4 tea-spoon salt. Either carve the pork into thin slices, or, using 2 forks, pull into small pieces. Serve with the vinegar sauce on the side, OR.....take your pulled pork, add 1 medium on-ion (medium chop), your favorite Bar-B-Q sauce (Walmart sells John Boy & Billy in 3 styles and it rocks!) and mix up onions, sauce and pork until your desired consistency is reached. To have it an “authentic” Tennessee barbeque sammich’, you must make the following coleslaw and serve the coleslaw on top of the pulled pork barbeque on a large toasted bun with sliced pickles optional.

“WHO DA’ MAN”? CREAMY COLESLAW

1 Pkg. Pre-Shredded Prepared Coleslaw Cabbage2 Heaping Tbls. of Prechopped Pickle Bits 1 Cup of Real Mayonnaise2 tsps. Taste when done to see if needs a touch extra of this or that. Cover and refrigerate to chill. Serve over top of your barbequed pork for a totally yummy melding of fl avors.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY? BLUEBERRY SOUR CREAM CAKE

1-1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour1 Cup Sugar, divided1 Stick of Real Butter1-1/2 tsp. Baking Powder1 Large Egg2 tsp. Vanilla, divided1 Qt. Fresh Blueberries, washed & destemmedor can substitute frozen blueberries2 Cups Quality Brand Sour Cream2 Large Egg Yolks

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9” baking pan. Combine fl our, 1/2 of the sugar, butter, baking powder, 1 egg, and half vanilla in large bowl. Mix well. Turn into the greased pan and sprinkle evenly with the blueberries. Combine sour cream, egg yolks, remaining sugar and remaining vanilla in medium bowl and blend well by hand. Look at YouHard-core lifer, scooter trash, weekend wanna-be,

crotch-rocketeer, dirt devil, drag-stripper, or cruiser classy, you pick the label. A biker clarifi es himself by the sled he rides, company shared, or lifestyle pursued.

Examine the evidence two-wheeled enthusiast provide. Look past the swagger, rawhide attire, skin-art and language. Study the glint in the eye of the loyal-ist to the “shiny side up, rubber side down” mentality. Watch the head tilt and an ear perk when a straight-piped “Harley” approaches. Observe, the “buck-up on the tank” or an “ease-into the saddle”, when a biker meshes with his ride. A smug smile completes his face. Getting there is more important than arriving on a two-wheeled, back road, off-road or highway journey.

Bikers will congregate as social cultures have throughout history. The rites of passage and pecking-order rules are observed. Dressed up or dressed down, patched-in or lone wolfs, gas price conscience or iron-butt award winners, bikers are prevalent. Bikers usually exist under the radar. Their private thrill of two wheels is unrelated to the work of a dentist, lawyer, bank clerk, computer programmer, construction foreman, farmer, a TV night-show host, governor, racecar driver or regular man or woman world wide. Transcending their other life by occupying the trails to somewhere, bikers are visible and impossible to ignore.Bobby Lee, Silent Skulls MC

The Softer Side of Leatherby Wayne Haskell

Some think bikers are mean, Some dressed in leathers and others in jeans.

You don’t like our scooters and our loud noisy pipes, You think we’re not loyal to the Stars and Strips

You don’t like our patches that are worn on our vests, You think we’re so different from all the rest. But the truth is, Mister, we’re kind of alike,

You drive a car and I ride a bike. You have no tattoos painted on your arm, But we fought side by side in Viet Nam.

So the next time your children are running around, Enjoy their freedom, and the fun that they’ve found.

Remember us bikers and all that we do, We feed our lost veterans, we’re red white and blue!

We bring toys for tots and toys for a smile By riding our bikes for miles and miles. You see, us bikers have never forgot,

Our homeless veterans and our homeless tots. We are loyal to our clubs and true to our bro’s,

We will always wear black from our heads to our toes. Society once said that long hair was for fags,

But you’ll never see a biker burning a fl ag. Now the tattoos and leather you don’t understand,

Stands for free independence that us bikers demand. Our long hair and patches and bikes with loud pipes. Is a tribute to our freedom, the Stars and the Stripes.

So before you make up your mind on just what I might be, Take a look in the mirror and what do you see? The man that you see that is staring right back

Is not too much different from that biker in black!!

MYRTLE BEACH BIKE WEEK Spring 2007

I wasn’t really planning on covering the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally this year because I usually spend the couple of days that I get down there, doing nothing but riding & taking a break from my crazy work schedule. But since my camera usually goes everywhere that I do, I did break it out a few times. If you’ve never been to one of the ral-lies there, either during the Spring or in the Fall, it’s miles & miles of endless activities all up & down the beautiful coastline from North Myrtle Beach, down to Murrell’s Inlet near South Myrtle. Vendors are everywhere, at the bike shops, in the parking lots, shopping plazas & down at the beach. There are bike shows, live music, famous bike builders, bike rodeos, countless bar parties & just about anything that any rider would want to do. The famous Ocean Blvd that stretches up & down the beach for miles is the craziest place. Unexpected riders fi nd themselves in an ongoing parade of bikes throughout the day & well into the night. Guests from the hotels on both sides of the street, sit for hours out on their balconies with their refreshments & smokes, some grab lawn chairs to sit by the street while others just pull up some grass to watch all the bikes traveling up & down the boulevard. You can only go 25mph so you can’t even rush through to get to where you’re going. Of course there are always the “hambones” that rev up their engines, guys that fl ex some muscle; some of the girl passengers do a little fl ashing & whatever crazy things that people conjure up to get attention. Then you have those that like to dress up in their cool biker duds or wild outfi ts & ride the strip to see how many hoots & hollers they can get from the crowd. The fi rst bike week I’d ever attended down there, many years ago, I was caught off guard about this so called ongoing parade of bikes & I thought it was the wildest thing to experience, but really very comical. You felt just like you were in a real parade, with all of these hotel spectators checking you out…it’s nuts!

Besides enjoying a lot of riding in the warm ocean breezes along the palm tree lined streets of the city, we hit a few major hot spots to check out some vendors & ran into some friends from the world of bike building…Bil-ly Lane, Paul Cox & Kendall Johnson with his crew. Yes, it’s true…Billy did get all of those gorgeous dreadlocks cut off into a short & sleek new “do”.

Well, the days passed quickly & I dreaded heading home, as always, but I knew I had to get back to fi nish up this issue. It was a very nice well needed break, riding & relaxing with friends & refreshing my mind to prepare for what looks to be a very busy summer in the Mid-Atlan-tic for the magazine. Those nice little breaks also help to keep things in check with that old saying… “Work to Ride…Ride to Work”. We’ll be back down there for the Fall Rally (Oct 3rd – 7th), where we’ll be joining up with the corporate owners of Thunder Roads, Toni & Brian & many other Thunder Roads state owners from our Na-tional Network. Hope to see you there!

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 38The Joker’s WildThe Joker’s Wild

The Joker’s WildThe Joker’s WildHell Hath No Fury...She spent the fi rst day packing her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of Chardonnay. When she had fi nished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp shells, dipped in caviar, into the hollow part of all the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left. When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the fi rst few days. Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning and mopping and airing the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked. People stopped coming over to visit... Repairmen refused to work in the house... The maid quit...Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move. A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not fi nd a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out, and eventually, even the local realtors refused to return their calls. Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. The ex-wife called the man, and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely, and said that she missed her old home terribly, and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back. Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on a price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth...But only if she were to sign the papers that very day. She agreed, and within the hour, his lawyers delivered the paperwork. A week later, the man and his new girlfriend stood smirking as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home, including the curtain rods.

Bubba walks into his local welfare offi ce, marches straight up to the counter and says, “Hi... You know, I just HATE drawing welfare checks. I’d really rather have a job, but there’s been so many people who have held me back in my life, I just can’t get ahead. Work is the truest pleasure of life.” The social worker behind the counter says, “Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful nymphomaniac daughter. You’ll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he’ll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You’ll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges. You’ll be provided a two-bedroom apartment above the ga-rage. The starting salary is $80,000 a year.” Bubba, wide eyed and excited, says, “You are totally b.s.’n me!” The social worker says, “Yeah, well, ... you started it.”

Dear Abby, I’ve never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs... phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.” I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she al-ways walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn’t in a taxi? I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her. Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil. Is this something I can fi x myself or should I take it back to the dealer? Thanks, Worried in Texas.

“Late again,” the third-grade teacher said to little Sammy. “It ain’t my fault,” Miss Crabtree. “You can blame this on my Daddy. The reason I’m three hours late is Daddy sleeps naked!” Now Miss Crabtree had taught grammar school for thirty-some-odd years. So she asked little Sammy what he meant by that, despite her mounting fears. Full of grins and mischief, and in the fun of his youth, little Sammy and trouble were old friends, but he always told the truth.“You see, Miss Crabtree, at the ranch we got this here lowdown coyote. The last Few nights he done et six hens and killed Ma’s best milk goat. And last night, when Daddy heard a noise out in the chicken pen, he grabbed his gun and said to Ma, “That coyote’s back again, I’m a gonna git him!’” “Stay back, he yelled to all us kids!” He was naked as a jaybird, no boots, no pants, no shirt! To the hen house he crawled, just like an Injun on the snoop. Then he stuck that double barrel through the window of the coop. As he stared into the darkness, with coyotes on his mind, our old hound dog Zeke had done woke up and come a sneakin’ up behind Daddy. Then we all looked on plumb helpless old Zeke stuck that cold nose in Daddy’s crack!“ Miss Crabtree, we been cleanin’ chickens since three o’clock this mornin’!”

THAT’S A SPORTSTER???THAT’S A SPORTSTER???Typically when someone mentions the name “Sportster”, a certain image usually comes to mind of a traditional, smaller, more compact Harley-Davidson motorcycle that is usually recommended to new riders or to most women to get as their 1st real bike. After releasing the article & info in our May 2007 issue about the makeover done on my ’95 Sportster by Bad Mo’s Custom Cycles, I’d received numerous calls & emails asking to see more pictures of the completed bike. I’ve been really surprised as to how many people have approached me while I was out & about, asking what kind of bike I rode, not even having a clue that she was a Sporty. Also in last month’s issue, you got to meet the 3 extreme talents of Bad Mo’s Custom Cycles, Eric, Tony & Bryon. Even though they can customize any make or model of bike, their specialty is defi nitely Sportsters. Over the next few months, we’ll show you their personal rides that they have customized “their way” & give you a small taste of just how versatile this model of HD can be when put in the right creative & talented hands. So many people nowadays are looking for something unique, a bike that looks like no one else’s, something special that sets them apart from the crowd & refl ects their personalities. Give em something to talk about…Customizing is defi nitely the way to go!

Below are some different angle shots of my bike:

Fair Winds and Following SeasFor those of you who have ever served in the U.S. Navy, “Fair Winds & Following Seas”, is an all too familiar phrase when honoring & saying goodbye to fellow sailors/shipmates as they transfer out to a new duty station. One of our contribut-ing staff members, Curtis Matthews, who is on active duty in the Navy, transferred last month to attend a school in Florida for 2 months then is off to San Diego, CA. for permanent duty. Curt has been rolling with us over the past 2 years, taking pictures at different bike shows & events & supporting the magazine in any way he could. Before Curt left, he invited a few “fellow shipmates” & close family members to attend his reenlistment ceremony that was held over at Dirty Dick’s Crab House in Virginia Beach. Dale was wonderful enough to open his restaurant early that day, exclusively for Curt’s ceremony which took place out on their deck overlooking the marina – it was picture perfect. Afterwards inside, their wonderful staff served up a deli-cious BBQ style lunch for everyone. It was a memorable afternoon for all who were there. Curt – from all the staff here at Thunder Roads….we wish you the best in your new adventures out on the west coast, be safe out on the road wherever you go & thanks for everything you’ve done with us for the motorcycle community. We salute you! From myself, a very special send off to you, Curt. I guess the best part about you leaving is that I get to come out & visit…never been to the west coast. You haven’t been gone long yet, but it seems like forever – I guess all moms have to go through it as their kids grow up & some move away. I love & miss you & am so damn proud of you. See you soon….All my Love ~ Mom ~

Prior to the fi nal weekend of fi lming for the Biker Build-Off between James Compton of Compton Custom Design and Andrew Williams of Departure Bike Works, the trip down to No Problem Raceway, didn’t necessarily end up with no problems.Matt Ward, a member of the Departure team had the unfortunate battle with a belt on his Harley and needless to say, Matt lost that particular fi ght. If anyone has ever experienced this, much like any other breakdown that leaves you stranded, it becomes a very lonely world for that moment. But loneliness was not what Matt was going to endure because almost immediatley, two police offi cers from Gautier, MS stopped to check out Matt’s situation. Offi cer Konrad and Offi cer Wilkie were very helpful with Matt’s dilemna and helped him get his scoot over to Metal Creations where Randy and his crew jumped on Matt’s bike and got him fi xed up with a new belt and a quick once-over to make sure Matt’s ride would be trouble free for the fi nal trek to Belle Rose, LA.“These guys are what the biker lifestyle is all about”, commented Matt. “Offi cers Konrad and Wilkie were very professional in their assistance and never did they look at me as if I were biker trash. I could see the gleam in Of-fi cer Konrad’s eyes as he got out of the patrol car, he truly loves Harleys. Both these helpful offi cers and Randy and his staff at Metal Creations went the extra mile to help without having to ask. They are good people and I am proud to say that I know them”.Matt was able to make the fi nal stretch to No Problem Raceway where Departure put up a great race against James, but could not take the trophy. The team headed back home to Richmond VA and later enjoyed watching the broadcast of the build-off on March 29th at Buffalo Wild Wings which included 60” big screen, and all the beer and hot wings they could stand. The guys would have loved to have Offi cers Konrad and Wilkie along with Randy and his team at Metal Creations there with them, but hopefully, they got to watch the show and feel very good about their generosity’s results right there on TLC. A unique feeling to hold on to forever knowing you helped someone out of a bind. And Matt & Phyllis are forever grateful to a special group of people who helped them see their trip through. From Matt and the crew at Departure Bike Works, “Thanks guys for lending a helping hand”.

Have You Ever Had One Of Those Days When Nothing Went Right?

Ten years ago, in June of 1997, my life was undergoing a lot of changes. I had recently gotten married. So things were going great for me. Then I was brought back down to earth by the sudden death of my father.

So in June of 1997 I wasn’t really looking forward to Father’s Day. So that Friday I hopped on the Harley and headed out of town for a weekend ride to clear my head. An hour into my trip I blacked out due to undiagnosed diabetes and ended up crossing the center line and hitting a car head on.

What started out as a fun ride to get away for the week-end ended up with me lying in a hospital emergency room with a broken hip, plenty of road rash, and worse: The knowledge that my bike was totaled!

So I spent the remainder of that beautiful summer with-out a bike, recovering from my injuries, and trying to learn how to make life changes to control my newly diagnosed diabetes.

And during that time I began to get discouraged. Not be-ing able to ride; being delegated to following bikes in a cage, and being limited by crutches, etc. was getting to me.

Part of the problem was that I wasn’t trusting in God. I was resentful over the losses in my life but was failing to see what God had provided me. I was still alive and would fully recover. I had a new bike on the way. And I had a wonderful wife to take care of me.

We all have problems. And they can cause discourage-ment and make life diffi cult for us. Sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be any end to the diffi culties that we face.

As we move into summer and all of the bike activities hit full swing, along with all of our other responsibilities, anything that goes wrong can suddenly become a major hindrance to us if we aren’t careful.

It doesn’t take a major problem to become discouraged. It’s usually the result of several little things that take their toll on us.

But if we remain focused on God throughout whatever situation arises, He will take care of us. He will get us through the diffi culties that we are facing.

So as you go out onto the highways and byways this summer and you start running into problems that are trying to throw you off course, try turning those problems over to God and ask Him to walk you through your troubles. They may not go away, but you will fi nd that if you truly trust in

God, He will get you through them in ways that will surprise you.

Take it from someone who has tried getting through prob-lems both on my own and then with God. I can assure you that when relied on myself, things never worked out as well as they did when I relied on Jesus Christ.

So as you prepare your bike for the riding season. Make sure to prepare your heart, body and soul at the same time. Trust in Jesus and you will fi nd the road more pleasurable and the road hazards less frightening.

Always and All Ways in Christ< )))>< Rick ‘Preacher’ Saunders

PREACHER RICK

Preacher Rick was born in WV, but was raised in North-ern VA. He began riding at 15, but took 16 years off and began riding again in 1993. He now rides a 1998 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic. He’s been married to his lovely wife, Teresa since 1996. Rick has served as presi-dent of the Northern VA Christian Riders, Chapter 348 of the Christian Motorcyclists Association since 2003. Memorial Runby Dave Sutton

Lynchburg, Va.- On April 14, chilly temperatures and damp weather could not stop over 100 Lynchburg area Bikers from paying tribute to a fallen Brother and friend. Some of you may recall my recent reporting on the death of Lee Garrett, owner of Marilyn’s Hot Rod Café. Well he was remembered in style recently as those who miss him gathered to celebrate his life and start a trust fund for his teenage son.

Several bikes did make the weather shortened version of the run and many more arrived in their cages. The event, planned to be an annual hap-pening, is scheduled for rain or shine due to venue and band considerations. The Marine Corps League, Blue’s Sports Tavern, Logan’s Roadhouse and the 1727 Moose Lodge and Family Center made everyone welcome. The Moose Riders handled logistics at the Lodge, while Iron Horse Cavalry/ABATE chipped in on registration and cooking. Other motorcycle organi-zations that contributed to the event’s success included the Pagans and Tribe MCs, Iron Horse Ministries, Christian Motorcycle Association and 2nd Brigade Vietnam Vets.

As participants ate, drank and reminisced about Lee, they were treated to music by bands like Hateful Bones, Squeeze Box and HyperFlesh. I was given the honor to write a eulogy for Lee and lead a moment of silence in his memory. Then the run prizes were handed out and door prize drawings began. Corporate sponsors refl ected the wide respect that Lee commanded in our community. The diverse companies included; Billy Powell’s Ink Works and Mom’s Tattoo, along with Confederate, Hopar’s, Bedrock Thunder, American Legend Custom and Lynchburg Harley-Davidson cycle shops. Other sponsors were Berkley’s Grill, Lynchburg Pawn Shop, Boston Bobby Gleason, Steve’s Signworx, Guill’s Chimney Cleaning, Nice Guy Produc-tions and the crew of the newly reopened Marilyn’s.

C.W. Toms and Billy Powell (Ink Works) are to be commended for the well organized event. They, and others, put in a massive amount of work putting this event together. But even they couldn’t control the weather. Even with a lower than hoped for turnout, event activities and pre-run shirt and sticker sales netted $5,100.00 for the trust fund. Next year’s run is already being planned.
