Even paradise has a dress code

Fifty years ago, the first Hilo Hattie store was opened on a small stretch of land between Lihue and Kapaa on the island of Kauai and featured aloha shirts with fun, tropical prints. Today, Hilo Hattie is comprised of seven stores throughout the Hawaiian Islands making them Hawaii’s largest retailer, manufacturer and wholesaler of Hawaii fashions and gifts. Voted by Hawaii residents as “The Best Place for Hawaiian Fashions” since 2001, Hilo Hattie offers the best values, largest selection of Made-in-Hawaii gifts and a 100% quality guarantee.

The answer to

“Where did you get

that?” isn’t a store.

It’s a story.

The fun begins by choosing

your oyster from the bucket.

Next, the ring of a bell and

shout of “Aloha!” and

there’s your genuine pearl.

Then select a beautiful

sterling silver or gold setting,

perhaps a ring, pendant or

matching earrings. Your pearl

will be mounted as you watch.

And not only will you have

an elegant piece of fine jewelry,

but a memory to share with

friends – and each other – forever.

Original. Authentic.

Sweets & Treats

Cool off from the inside out with a true Hawai‘i–inspired treat: shave ice! Authentic shave ice is made from blocks of ice that are shaved as opposed to snow cones that are often made with crushed ice. The shaving creates a very fine ice, lightly but firmly packed into a rounded mound of ice. A good shave ice should never cave in when syrup is poured on top! Try it with azuki bean paste at the bottom and a scoop of vanilla ice cream! C’mon, give it a go!

The bountiful food and lively Polynesian performances of today’s lu‘au has its roots in ancient Hawai‘i. The kapu system once forbade men and women from eating together, but in 1819, King Kamehameha II removed the law, hence allowing all to gather and enjoy their meals—this was the beginning of the lu‘au. Today, a few local families celebrate special occasions—baby’s first birthday, graduation, anniversary or wedding—with a backyard lu‘au. Food, music and fun are casually enjoyed by all, and even if you’re not related by blood to the host family, you will be considered family by the end of the festivities. That is the spirit of the lu‘au, and in general, the spirit of the Hawaiian people. Drums of the Pacific Lu‘au, Maui’s longest-running lu‘au show, fills the senses with the opening sounds of pu and pahu beats, enticing aromas from an elaborate buffet and colorful views from Sunset Terrace. Tihati Productions takes guests on a journey back in time with authentic music and dance—embark on a Tahitian voyage to old Hawai‘i and through the South Pacific Islands of Polynesia. The finale is an unforgettable Samoan fire-knife dance. After a traditional imu ceremony, feast on the exotic f lavors of Hawaiian cuisine and sip cocktails at the open bar. It’s your turn to become part of an extended family. Every lu‘au has its own distinct feature separating it from the others, but all provide a feast of Hawaiian and local fare, spirited performances, fun audience participation and lots of laughter.

IF YOU LOVE COCONUT...Then you’ll love haupia! Most commonly served as dessert at lu‘au, haupia is a coconut milk-based gelatin. It’s not too sweet and very smooth and light in texture.

ATTIRELu‘au attire is always casual, but now’s the time to don lovely alohawear in the spirit of a lu‘au. Wear it loose so you can enjoy yourself even after the huge meal!

WHAT’S AN IMU?A traditional way of cooking underground using heated native hardwood and basaltic stones to conduct heat with banana and ti leaves lining the walls.

One of the most historically significant places in Hawai‘i, Lahaina is renowned for its sunny skies, fertile plains, sandy beaches and beautiful bays. In the 16th century, Lahaina was home to the great Pi‘ilani chiefs and in the 19th century, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i under the reign of the Kamehamehas. Lahaina has witnessed the comings and goings of

warriors, kings, whalers, traders, sugar barons, heads of state, celebrities and world travelers. Today, Lahaina remains a popular place to visit. Everywhere you look, there’s a reminder of its rich history from one era to another. Lahaina Historic Trail offers dozens of interpretive signs along Front Street and at landmarks. Banyan Tree Park is one of these landmarks, featuring the largest banyan in the U.S., the Old Courthouse with Lahaina Heritage Museum, Lahaina Arts Society and Lahaina Visitor Center. There are also five museums in the heart of Lahaina; map-brochures of the historic trail and museums are available through Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Lahaina Harbor is home to charter boats that feature a wide array of activities such as snorkel and dive tours, sportfishing, sunset sails and a submarine ride. A visit to Lahaina wouldn’t be complete without taking in dinner and a show. Choose from Hawaiian lu‘au feasts, a world-class magic show and magical theater production. Restaurants

abound and offer a cultural melting pot of cuisine, including Hawai‘i Regional, Pacific Rim, Asian, American, European and casual comfort foods. Many restaurants and bars feature scenic views and live music that capture island life. Map B.

Oftentimes, you’ll find the fruits of travel can be found in the journey to a place rather than just the destination itself. Such is the case with the drive to Hana on Hwy. 36. By necessity you’ll have to take it slow with the road’s 617 turns and 56 one-lane bridges, which takes nearly three hours to navigate—longer if you stop at the numerous sites along the way. Along the highway, discover lots to see and do: Kaumahina State Wayside Park; Keanae Arboretum; Wailua Valley State

Wayside; Pua‘a Ka‘a State Wayside with small waterfalls and pools; and 122-acre Wai‘anapanapa State Park with black sand beach, picnic area, native hala forest, cave and blowholes. Past Hana, you’ll encounter the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park. Stop by the visitor center for info on numerous area trails. One of them is the popular Pipiwai Trail. It’s four miles roundtrip, takes about 2.5-5 hours depending on the stops, and ends at the spectacular 400-ft. Waimoku Falls. Map I. Discover Hawaii Tours provides the full roundtrip to Hana with a picnic lunch. Numerous stops include Puohokamoa Falls, Wai‘anapanapa State Park, Hana Bay and town, Tedeschi Winery,

Ulupalakua Ranch, Pa‘ia town and more. Other tours include snorkel, dolphin and helicopter tours, plus trips to neighboring islands. Roberts Hawaii offers a one-day Heavenly Hana Adventure, as well as an all-in-one tour to Haleakala, ‘Iao Valley and Lahaina. Also call Roberts to experience your choice of two island lu‘au.

‘Iao Valley State Monument is steeped in Hawaiian history and lore. Located about three

miles west of Wailuku at the end of winding ‘Iao Valley Road, this park is known for its lush, tropical vegetation and crystal clear stream. The valley was the site of Kamehameha the Great’s notorious battle with Maui forces in 1790 that ended in his conquest of the island. It was said that ‘Iao Stream ran red with the blood of fallen warriors.

The park features paved walkways and botanical gardens for visitors to enjoy. Towering through clouds and reaching to the heavens is Kuka‘emoku, the famous landmark ‘Iao Needle, which rises 1,200 feet from the valley f loor. One of the walkways leads up to a platform for viewing the needle and the valley basin out to Kahului Harbor. Interpretive signage provides a background on the history of the area. An ethnobotanical walk meanders down to the streambed, highlighting native plants. $5 entry fee; it’s open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. Back down ‘Iao Valley Road is Kepaniwai Park-Heritage Gardens, a tribute to Maui’s multicultural heritage. Since the 1950s, several cultural groups have created displays of gardens, buildings and statuary that exemplify their homelands. There is no admission fee to this county park. Stroll through Korean, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, New England and traditional Hawaiian features. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy by ‘Iao Stream. Map A:E1.

BEWARE OF NENE!Now through April is a critical time for the nene as theybreed and nest in Haleakala NP.SLOW DOWN & keep an eye out for these endangered birds!

Maui’s coolest small town has a distinct international f lair. This north shore town melds elements of its 100-plus year history as a booming sugar plantation camp with over 30 years of recognition as the “Windsurf Capital of the World.” Pa‘ia’s thriving multi-ethnic culture began in the 1890s when laborers were imported to work in the Pa‘ia Sugar Mill or nearby cane fields. The townspeople were a mix of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Puerto Rican and Portuguese, who lived and worked together in harmony. A century later, the town continued to attract people from around the world once a group of young surfers discovered the perfect wind conditions at nearby Ho‘okipa Beach and developed a new sport of surfing with a sail. The result is a picturesque beach town with brightly colored plantation-era wooden buildings. Inside the vibrant storefronts you’ll find at least 40 boutiques, offering a wide selection of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, designer swimwear, surfing, windsurfing and beach gear, jewelry and art studios along with home furnishings. Restaurants and eateries are in no short supply either. Whether you’re looking for a light snack or full meal, you can choose from bakeries, a coffee shop, fresh fish and seafood, Mexican, Brazilian, Mediterranean, Pacific Rim, Indian or Vegan. Several restaurants feature live music nights and weekends. Laid-back during the day, Pa‘ia jams after the sun goes down. The north shore is also known for its beautiful, white sand beaches. Baldwin Beach Park is the first beach you encounter, driving from Kahului to Pa‘ia. It offers restrooms and picnic facilities. Pa‘ia Bay (referred to as Baby Beach by many of the locals) is located at the edge of town and perfect for swimming. Once you leave Pa‘ia heading east, you’ll see a sign for Ku‘au, home to the renowned Mama’s Fish House. The sandy cove in front of the restaurant and luxury homes is a quiet place to relax. Next stop is world-famous Ho‘okipa Beach Park. No matter what you like best about Maui, you can discover the extreme side while experiencing Pa‘ia. Map G:B3.

Dominating east Maui with its summit at 10,023 feet is the majestic volcanic crater known as Haleakala (House of the Sun). One of only two national parks in Hawai‘i, Haleakala is home to endangered bird species, rare native plants and exotic landscapes. There are also many cultural and historic sites within its boundaries from the moon-like summit to the rainforest of Kipahulu accessible only from the road to Hana/Highway 360. For those who seek a path less traveled, drive up to the summit in the late afternoon and stay for sunset. The above-clouds view toward the west is awe-inspiring. At night, a telescope offers unique perspective: the stars and heavenly bodies are so dense at this high elevation that you’ll see movement in the sky. During daylight hours, park rangers offer guided hikes at no charge in both the Summit and Kipahulu areas. The Waikamoi Cloud Forest Hike begins at Hosmer Grove just inside the park entrance. This is a three-hour, three-mile moderate hike into the native upland forest where you just may see a rare endemic bird. It’s every Thursday from 8:45 a.m.; call for reservations, 808-572-4400. A 20-minute hike along the famous Sliding Sands Trail is offered three times each morning. Adventuresome hikers will find over 37 miles of trails to explore on their own in the park.

Upcountry Maui The fertile volcanic slopes of Haleakala offer a dramatic change in landscape and climate from Maui’s popular coastlines. The combination of volcanic soil, cool weather and

SUMMIT NEED TO KNOW• Entry $10 per vehicle.• Park headquarters near the summit is open sunrise-3 p.m.• The last place to get food or gas is in Pukalani. Bring lots of water if you plan to hike, and a flashlight if you’re going during predawn hours or after sunset. Sun protection and sturdy shoes are recommended.• Temperature is at least 30 degrees cooler than at sea level, so dress in layers and bring clothing for all weather.• Weather varies at the summit; call 866-944-5025 ext. 4 for current conditions.• On the way up, stop at two overlooks: Leleiwi and Kalahaku. The latter is a good place to see the endangered silversword.• Since the park is open 24/7, catch the sunset as opposed to the sunrise, and hang around for some stargazing.

HALEAKALA: KIPAHULU DISTRICT• There is a coastal side to this national park accessible only by driving the road to Hana.• Park is open 24/7, visitor center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Restroom and water are available.

The Pacific beckons... The shimmering blue ocean is an open invitation to dive right in. Experience an ocean adventure in more ways than one with activities guaranteed to please every age range—from snorkeling beneath the ocean surface to high-f lying adventures. A note of caution: wherever you venture, observe ocean safety signs posted at beaches and as ascertained from surf and weather reports, and water activity providers.

Snorkel & snuba The hottest underwater activity on Maui is called “snuba,” a hybrid between snorkeling and scuba diving. Enjoy the freedom of breathing underwater with a regulator without the weight of a tank on your back. Instead, a harness worn on the body is connected to a long hose that’s connected to a raft f loating on the water. Explore the ocean to about 10 feet. Begin your underwater adventure with convenient gear rentals. Boss Frog’s Snorkel, Surf & Cycle carries snorkel equipment, body and surf boards, beach chairs and bicycles—everything to play outdoors on the Valley Isle. Ask about deals that include popular activities such as a Molokini snorkel outing too. Maui’s Beach House is a family-owned rental shop where you’ll find surfboards, SUPs, kayaks, snorkel gear, fins, beach umbrellas and private lessons too. They have a large inventory of equipment, so you can just walk right in, find what you need, and walk right out. Pick up and delivery are available too. Snorkel Bob’s features their own exclusive line of quality gear—the Snorkel Bob Brand Seamo Betta™ and Li’l Mo Betta™ RX masks, Bigfoots (15-17) and Mof lex fins, Ultima Bubba dry snorkel and Mof l02 for fresh air with every breath. Their free 24-hour interisland gear return makes it easy and convenient for you! Also get SB’s 250-page fish photography book “Every Fish Tells a Story” for $7.50 with rental of a snorkel set for the week (regular price is $28).

Get a bird’s eye view of the ocean and majestic West Maui mountains with West Maui Parasail. Take off and land from the deck of the boat. Fly single, tandem or triple (good for kids!).

Marine Life Havens Hawai‘i has a multitude of natural resources, one of the most revered being its marine life. Throughout the state, Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCD) were established to conserve and replenish fragile marine resources. The crescent-shaped islet of Molokini can be seen from Maui’s leeward coast. One of the most popular snorkeling and diving spots in Maui County, Molokini’s inner cove is the crater’s submerged f loor. Its diversity of reef fish and other marine life is among the most impressive in Hawai‘i. Molokini was named a MLCD in 1977.

Honolua Bay and neighboring Mokule‘ia Bay on the northwestern shore were designated as a MLCD in 1978. Honolua is a famous surf spot and its bay is popular with snorkeling charter boats. Mokule‘ia, which is often called Slaughterhouse because there was once a cattle slaughterhouse on its cliffs, has a beautiful sandy beach. Both bays offer dense fields of coral, small lava caves and arches (Map D:E3). Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was created in 1992 and comprises mainly the seas surrounding Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe. The warm tropical waters of less than 600 feet in depth are considered by many to be the world’s most important humpback whale habitat, as well as the only area in the U.S. where humpbacks reproduce. Learn more at the Sanctuary Visitor Center located in Kihei. Open Mon.-Fri. with year-round exhibits and programs (Map E:E7). Hawai‘i established one of its largest MLCDs in 1976 on the coast of Lana‘i with the adjacent bays of Manele and Hulopo‘e. The bays are separated by a volcanic cone, which has eroded to form Pu‘u Pehe Cove. A sea stack known as Pu‘u Pehe Rock is located just offshore. The cove and lava rock are a popular place to snorkel. Hulopo‘e Bay is surrounded by lava, creating large tidepools.

Island BlingFor the elegant luster of

beautiful pearls, Pearl Factory offers genuine Akoya, Tahitian black, white and golden South

Sea pearls and freshwater pearls. Choose your pearl and select from more than

120 jewelry mountings. It’s Hawai‘i’s original pearl-in-the-

oyster treasure hunt!

Gems unique to the islands are all quality made and

painstakingly crafted to reflect the true beauty and traditions

of its heritage.

In 1887, Queen Kapi‘olani and Princess Lili‘uokalani attended

Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in England. At that time, they

received solid gold bracelets with their names etched in Old

English lettering filled with black enamel. When the royal pair returned to Hawai‘i, they

gave similar bracelets to other members of the royal family.

This is the start of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry.

MAUI’S

Pineapples, onions and coffee, oh my! Maui is most closely associated with these iconic foods. When you put them together, chances are likely that visuals spring to mind of golden pineapples ripening in the field, sweet onions sauteing in the pan or fragrant

coffee brewing in a pot. Grown on Maui is a nationally recognized label, but did you know that the island is also home to a wide range of incredible edibles: raw sugar, wines and spirits, chocolate bars, potato chips, tropical fruit jams, even goat cheese truff les. Farmers Market of Maui has a tradition of offering the tastiest Maui-grown produce direct from local farms. Shop for avocados, bananas, coconuts, mangoes and papayas. Pick up airport-ready Maui pineapples and onions, island macadamia nuts and coffee. You’ll also find fresh home baked goods. Based on O‘ahu, Honolulu Cookie Company serves popular, gourmet treats shaped like miniature pineapples. Premium ingredients are combined to create delectable shortbread cookies in tropical f lavors, dipped in dark or milk chocolate, baked with a coffee bean or sugared fruit. These cookies are so tasty that island residents as well as visitors order them in gift boxes for friends and family or business associates. Also be sure to check out Maui’s farmers markets around the island for the freshest fruits, vegetables and tasty treats. When you buy Grown on Maui, you’re supporting local farmers, families and small businesses. Thanks for your kokua!

Here’s how it works:as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a double-valve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath.
