MAY 10, 2020 – FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson In the Gospel especially, we see two of the Apostles a bit bewildered over the sayings of their Master. Thomas, ever ready to transparently tell anyone who would listen of his doubts or his struggles with the truth. So He looks Jesus in the eye and frankly states that he does not know where Jesus is going, so how can he or they (or we) possibly know the way? In so doing, Thomas again brings forth from Jesus words to build a life upon: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” Presuming that Phillip, a mild-mannered man just trying to figure out his new life and what it all meant, happened to overhear especially that last part of Jesus’ answer. So he innocently pipes up with a humble request: “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” I can hear a hint of exasperation in Jesus’ voice moderated by His patience when He replies with a question: “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Phillip?” Then the theological bomb: “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.” That remark alone would test the mettle of theologians for centuries. Now please note something about Jesus in His dealings with these two of His chosen Twelve. It is His patience. Would you not agree that that is one of the most neglected virtues of our time? Our fast-paced culture, which seeks out tranquilizers and escape from reality drugs, testifies that patience needs practice. We have all felt the need during the present health and economic crisis called “corona.” The virtue of patience “oils the gears” of our interactions. Reading I: Acts 6: 1-7 - The Greek-speaking widows faced economic hardship and were being overlooked. Simultaneously the Apostles were being swamped by requests and unable to answer them. The Spirit directed them to commission seven men of proven virtue to do a “table ministry.” This allowed the Apostles to pray and preach the word unhindered. Reading II: I Peter 2: 4-9 - St. Peter describes Christians as those becoming “God’s household” and sharing in the risen Lord’s very life. He also describes the people using four Old Testament categories. Their basic task, he wrote, was to “announce the praises” of Jesus. The Gospel: John 14: 1-12 - St. Thomas, with his habitual honesty, questions Jesus about “the way.” St. Phillip, in his bewilderment, asks to “see the Father.” Jesus’ astounding answers bring us the assurance that only faith can. (Worship Pgs. 1088)

THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR- "A MILLION FAMILIES, A MILLION ROSARIES" Life these days can feel so difficult and prayers sustain us and all for whom we pray. It was suggested that perhaps we could pray a Rosary together for all those we know who are sick with the coronavirus, especially since there seem to be so many in

NY. I also received a link to the website of 'The Little Sisters of the Poor' and their initiative: "a million families, a million rosaries" to end the pandemic. So I will share below the link where you can submit your name each time you say the rosary. This is just a suggestion but what a powerful way for us to join together to pray for those who are suffering from Covid-19. No scheduled time, just pray it if and when you can. This is the link to the "million Rosary": http://littlesistersofthepoor.org/a-million-families-a-million-rosaries/
