FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10, 2019

Today’s readings recount three theophanies, or particular manifestations of God’s presence. The prophet Isaiah is caught up in a dramatic scene of heavenly worship, with a royal throne, burning embers, and seraphim singing, “Holy, holy, holy.” Isaiah is overwhelmed. In the responsorial psalm, the assembly adds its own worship to that of the seraphim: “In the sight of the angels, I will sing your praises, Lord” (Psalm 138:1). Paul reminds the Corinthians of his own experience of a post-Resurrection appearance of the Lord, making him an apostle, but one “born abnormally” (1 Corinthians 15:8), since he had no acquaintance with the earthly Jesus. The first of those who did know the earthly Jesus were surprised by fishing advice from the teacher who had commandeered Simon’s boat, resulting in an extraordinary catch. Although less colorful than those of Isaiah or Paul, this theophany was just as overwhelming.

WHEN GOD APPEARS . . . Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, prophets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in today’s readings, there is no explicit directive for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to follow Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respective calls result from the recognition of God’s presence in the experience. That recognition creates an openness to whatever God might want.

Today’s Readings: Is 6:1–2a, 3–8; Ps 138:1–2, 2–3, 4–5, 7–8; 1 Cor 15:1–11 [3–8, 11]; Lk 5:1–11(Worships Pgs.1123)

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Last week, I spoke about Prayer and being aware of God in our lives. When we listen to the voice of God within us, he gently calls us to help make His Kingdom happen in our midst.

We live when Human Life is being assaulted by many! What can we do? We can involve ourselves in the ministries that present positive alternatives! Birthright, Good Counsel Homes, Rockland County Right to Life, the programs of Reconciliation for those who have been involved in an abortion: Lumina (Good Counsel) & Entering Canaan (Sisters of Life), and others!

We pray that through the intercession of Our Lady our Nation grow in our Respect for Human Life! Peace, Prayer, & Gratitude, Fr. Jerry

THE 2019 CARDINAL’S APPEAL “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith “ — Galatians 6:10. We pray that everything we do helps open our doors to those who need to hear the message of our Lord, Jesus. But we know the doors that matter most are at the entrances to our 292 parishes. On this 40th anniversary, we are focusing the Cardinal’s Appeal entirely on keeping parishes healthy and vibrant. We need your help to continue this work. Hundreds of thousands of your brothers and sisters count on your donations every year – because they count on the Church. That is why every year we ask you to make this contribution.

Page Six GOD’S SUMMONS

Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger?
