FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10, 2019

Today’s readings recount three theophanies, or particular manifestations of God’s presence. The prophet Isaiah is caught up in a dramatic scene of heavenly worship, with a royal throne, burning embers, and seraphim singing, “Holy, holy, holy.” Isaiah is overwhelmed. In the responsorial psalm, the assembly adds its own worship to that of the seraphim: “In the sight of the angels, I will sing your praises, Lord” (Psalm 138:1). Paul reminds the Corinthians of his own experience of a post-Resurrection appearance of the Lord, making him an apostle, but one “born abnormally” (1 Corinthians 15:8), since he had no acquaintance with the earthly Jesus. The first of those who did know the earthly Jesus were surprised by fishing advice from the teacher who had commandeered Simon’s boat, resulting in an extraordinary catch. Although less colorful than those of Isaiah or Paul, this theophany was just as overwhelming.

WHEN GOD APPEARS . . . Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, prophets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in today’s readings, there is no explicit directive for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to follow Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respective calls result from the recognition of God’s presence in the experience. That recognition creates an openness to whatever God might want.

A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. H.A.N.D.S. (Healing and Nurturing Distraught Survivors) H.A.N.D.S. sponsors a BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP for parents who have lost a child. It is facilitated by Ann Carucci, founder of H.A.N.D.S. who lost her son & daughter–in-law in a boating accident. Their bodies were never recovered. All groups meet from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger?

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP St. Paul-St. Ann’s parish in Nyack holds a Bereavement Support Group throughout the year on the First Friday of the month from 10:00-11:30 at 16 Jefferson Street (the school directly across the street from the church). All those who have lost a loved one, whether it is a spouse, child, friend or other family member are welcomed to this gentle, understanding and comforting group. We help each other through the darkness of mourning and learn to live again. Mass, benediction and rosary are available before the 12:10 mass in the Church. The support group serves men and women of all faiths and is a source of referral from Calvary Hospital, Hospice, as well as Social Services’ administrators. All are welcome!
