THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 23, 2019
Today we hear how Abram encounters Melchizedek, “king of Salem . . . and a priest of God Most High” (Genesis 14:18). Melchizedek appears nowhere else in scripture, but is nonetheless significant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek,” a description later given (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest. Early Christians saw in Melchizedek’s bread and wine the bread and wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (in today’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture. In the Gospel, Luke describes Jesus providing bread for a crowd in words similar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it. Together, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Presence, and the call to serve those in need are all found in the gift of the Eucharist.
CHURCH, EUCHARIST, AND THOSE IN NEED There is a saying: “The Church makes the Eucharist, and the Eucharist makes the Church.” In the Eucharistic celebration, we find Christ truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. We also find him in the assembly, the scriptures, and the preacher-presider—everything we do to “do this,” and in doing “this,” we become the Body of Christ. Our Eucharistic remembrance of Jesus is a living sacramental memory that transforms us, too. We receive Communion to live in communion with Christ and one another, to become the “real presence” of Christ in the world. We do what the disciples did: we feed those in need with the love and compassion with which Christ feeds us.

CHILDREN BULLETIN Beginning Sunday 6/16/19 and every Sunday during the summer there will be Childrens Bulletins in a container on the table near the sacristy in the parish church. Each child should take one to assist them in the gospel message each week. We will resume Childrens Liturgy in the fall.

PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH Each year the Archdiocesan Office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith sponsors the Missionary Cooperative Appeal. This year our Parish is pleased to welcome Sr. Margaret Rogers SHJS who will speak to us on behalf of the Propagation of the Faith.
She will be with us at all Masses next weekend 6/30/19. She will speak to us about the many challenges missionaries face daily which we might take for granted. The second collection at each Mass next weekend will be sent to the Propagation of the Faith Office to support the needs of mission Dioceses and Religious Communities. Evangelization is at the heart of the Church’s mission throughout the world, and we ask you to be as generous as your means allow in next week’s second collection. BAPTISMS: First and Fourth Sundays of the month at 2:00 PM. Instructions for parents of children to be Baptized must be arranged with the Priests of the Parish. Only instructed Catholics should be invited as Godparents. A copy of the child’s birth certificate and sponsor certificates for the Godparents are required when you meet with the priest. CONFESSIONS: Saturday afternoon 4:30 - 5:30 PM in the Shrine Church. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months before the marriage takes place. SICK CALLS: Any time. Do not neglect to call a priest to a person seriously ill (while the person is conscious, if possible).

SHRINE TO THE UNBORN AT ST. ANTHONY’S - A Shrine to the Unborn is installed in St. Anthony’s Shrine Church. The centerpiece of the shrine is an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. If you wish to have an unborn child included; applications are available at St. Anthony’s Church office 623-2138 between 8:30am & 3:30pm. There is no fee but donations will be received with gratitude.

THIS SACRED MEAL
Today, we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nurtures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work.

When that is happening, we can benefit from a conversation with an experienced professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective. Our parish can make a connection for you through the archdiocese's PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor in Rockland County or anyplace in the archdiocese for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session. THE RACHEL MINISTRY Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. The Rachel ministry is a CONFIDENTIAL ministry for those scarred by abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. H.A.N.D.S. (Healing and Nurturing Distraught Survivors) H.A.N.D.S. sponsors a BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP for parents who have lost a child. It is facilitated by Ann Carucci, founder of H.A.N.D.S. who lost her son & daughter–in-law in a boating accident. Their bodies were never recovered. All groups meet from 6:30 to 8:00pm. It will be held at International Headquarters, 9 Scott Drive, New City, NY 10956. The next meetings are July 3rd & 16th. Services are free of charge. Ann is also available for personal one-on-one counseling sessions. H.A.N.D.S also now has a WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS GROUP facilitated by Ann Carucci, who lost her husband. If you have a child entering Grade 1 in September and are registering for the first time, please follow the instructions for New PREP Families.
