En aquel tiempo, se acercaron a Jesús algunos saduceos. Como los sa-duceos niegan la resurrec-ción de los muertos, le preguntaron: "Maestro, Moisés nos dejó escrito que si alguno tiene un her-

mano casado que muere sin haber tenido hijos, se case con la viuda para dar descendencia a su her-mano. Hubo una vez siete hermanos, el mayor de los cuales se casó y murió sin dejar hijos. El segundo, el tercero y los demás, hasta el séptimo, tomaron por esposa a la viuda y todos murieron sin dejar suce-sión. Por fin murió también la viuda. Ahora bien, cuando llegue la resurrección, ¿de cuál de ellos será esposa la mujer, pues los siete estuvieron casados con ella?" Jesús les dijo: "En esta vida, hombres y mu-jeres se casan, pero en la vida futura, los que sean juzgados dignos de ella y de la resurrección de los muertos, no se casarán ni podrán ya morir, porque serán como los ángeles e hijos de Dios, pues él los habrá resucitado. Y que los muertos resucitan, el mismo Moi-sés lo indica en el episodio de la zarza, cuando llama al Señor, Dios de Abraham, Dios de Isaac, Dios de Jacob. Porque Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven".

XXXII Niedziela Zwykła Podeszło do Jezusa kilku saduceuszów, którzy twierdzą, że nie ma zmartwychwstania, i zagadnęli Go w ten sposób: «Nauczycielu, Mojżesz tak nam przepisał: „Jeśli umrze czyjś brat, który miał żonę, a był bezdzietny, niech jego brat pojmie ją za żonę i niech wzbudzi potomstwo swemu bratu”. Otóż było siedmiu braci. Pierwszy pojął żonę i zmarł bezdzietnie. Pojął ją drugi, a potem trzeci, i tak wszyscy pomarli, nie zostawiwszy dzieci. W końcu umarła ta kobieta. Przy zmartwychwstaniu więc którego z nich będzie żoną? Wszyscy siedmiu bowiem mieli ją za żonę». Jezus im odpowiedział: «Dzieci tego świata żenią się i za mąż wychodzą. Lecz ci, którzy uznani zostaną za godnych udziału w świecie przyszłym i w powstaniu z martwych, ani się żenić nie będą, ani za mąż wychodzić. Już bowiem umrzeć nie mogą, gdyż są równi aniołom i są dziećmi Bożymi, będąc uczestnikami zmartwychwstania. A że umarli zmartwychwstają, to i Mojżesz zaznaczył tam, gdzie jest mowa o krzewie, gdy Pana nazywa „Bogiem Abrahama, Bogiem Izaaka i Bogiem Jakuba”. Bóg nie jest Bogiem umarłych, lecz żywych; wszyscy bowiem dla Niego żyją».

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordi-nary Time

Luke 20:27-38 Jesus answers a question from some Sadducees about the resurrec-tion of the dead. (short form Luke 20:27, 34-38)

Background on the Gospel Reading

In today's Gospel, we hear about an encounter be-tween Jesus and some Sadducees. The Sadducees were a party of Judaism active in Jesus' time, descended from the priestly family of Zadok. They were literal interpreters of the written Law of Moses, which means that they were in disagreement with the position of the Pharisees, who offered an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses. The Sadducees are described in this Gospel as op-ponents to the belief in resurrection. In the dialogue present-ed here, we see an example of the means of disputation that was common in first century Judaism. The Sadducees use the example of Levirate marriage, found in the Law of Mo-ses, to disprove belief in the resurrection. According to Deu-teronomy 25:5-10, if a man died without producing an heir, the man's brother should marry his wife and the offspring of this union would inherit the property and carry on the name of the man who had died. The Sadducees use this as an ex-ample to challenge belief in the resurrection. Jesus argues from the same written Law of Moses to show that there is resurrection. Using the texts from the Book of Exodus (Chapter 3) that describe Moses' encounter with God in the burning bush, Jesus shows that God is the God of the living, not the dead. Here Jesus uses the same method and texts of the Sadducees to counter them. As the Gospel text suggests, he beat them at their own game! More importantly, in this discourse Jesus shows the limits of our imaginations when it comes to eternal life. The Sadducees argued against resurrection because of the limits of earthly existence. They did not imagine another possibil-ity for existence and relationship with God. Jesus proposes that the possibilities of resurrected life are beyond our imag-inations. Jesus' conclusion suggests something else as well: To spend time worrying about resurrected life is to miss the point. The point is eternal relationship with God is possible, for God is the God of the living, “. . . for to him all are alive.”

worked hard to save a struggling orphanage, and decided to start her own religious order. By the late 1880s, Mother Cabrini became interested in a new problem. Hundreds of thousands of Italians moved to America, seeking a way out of the poverty of their new land. Very few of these immigrants were successful right away. Most lived in worse poverty than they’d endured back in Italy. They lived in crowded and dirty apartments, lived on scraps, and were unable to find work. Sad stories traveled back to the home country, right to Mother Cabrini. So Mother Cabrini set out on the long trip to America. Over the next thirty-seven years, Mother Cabrini was constantly on the move, starting schools, orphanages, and hos-pitals for Italian immigrants, and others in need. In the first few years she traveled between New York, Nicaragua, and New Orleans. After having a dream in which she saw Mary tending to the sick lying in hospital beds, Mother Cabrini started Co-lumbus Hospital in New York City. After she founded the hospital, Mother Cabrini made trips back to Italy to organize more nuns for work in America. Between these trips, she and some sisters headed south to Ar-gentina. The sisters went by way of Panama and then Lima, Peru. They made the journey by boat, train, mule, and on foot. Back in the United State, Mother Cabrini traveled con-stantly taking her sisters to Chicago, Seattle, and Denver. It was in Chicago that Mother Cabrini, at the age of sixty-seven, passed away. She’d begun her work with just a handful of sis-ters. By the time she died, fifty houses of sisters were teaching, caring for orphans, and running hospitals. Her order had grown to almost a thousand sisters in all. Mother Cabrini was obviously a very holy woman, and the church recognized her holiness by canonizing her in 1946 as the first American citizen to become a saint. from Loyola Kids Books of Saints

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917) Feast Day November 13

Traveling Can Be Exhausting St. Frances Xavier Cabrini’s feast day is celebrated November 13. Mother Cabrini, as she’s commonly called, spent her whole life traveling. She hardly ever stopped, and travel was a lot harder in her day than it is in ours. There wasn’t much in Mother Cabrini’s early life to point to such a busy grown-up life. She was born in Italy and had ten brothers and sisters. Her parents were farmers, and their farmland wasn’t too far from a river called the Po. Little Frances could look down into the valley and watch the river make its way to the sea. When Frances was twenty years old she left the farm and started working as a teacher. During this time, Frances grew in faith and maturity. She took religious vows as a sister,
