Why Do the Latins Cross Themselves Backwards?

The sign of the cross of the Byzantines is different from

that of the Latins. The thumb and first two fingers of the

right hand are joined at the tips; the fourth and fifth fingers

are folded over the palm. The two fingers and thumb signify

the three Divine Persons of the Trinity, while the other two

fingers symbolize the two natures in Jesus Christ. With the

fingers so joined, the forehead is touched first (" In the

name of the Father"), then the breast ("and of the Son"), the

right shoulder ("and of the Holy..."), and finally the left

shoulder ("Spirit. Amen. "). Meanwhile, the head and

shoulders are slightly bowed as a sign of submission to the

Godhead.

The right shoulder is touched first, not the left as in

the Latin Rite. Prior to the end of the twelfth century,

Christians of both East and West made the sign of the cross

from the right to the left. Latin Catholics began making it

with all the fingers extended, and from the left shoulder to

the right, at the time of Pope Innocent III (1198

-1216). Supposedly, this meant that Jesus came from the

Father to earth by becoming man, then descended into the

left side, i.e., into hell, by his Passion and thence into his

Father's right side, by his ascension. Another explanation

was that making the sign from the left, the weak side, the

side of sin, to the right, the side of salvation, would

symbolize the death of Christ on the cross, and our being

carried by it from the left to the right side, to salvation.

The earlier, more ancient way of making the sign of the

cross, as it is still done in the Byzantine Church, from the

right to the left, is understood to mean that salvation passed

from the Jews, who were at the right side of God (the side

of honor, belonging to the chosen people) to the Gentiles,

who were at his left. Touching the right shoulder first also

expresses the Christian hope to be put among the righteous

on the right hand of Christ, the Judge at the Final Judgment.

In the Latin Rite the priest, when imparting a blessing,

still makes the sign of the cross from the right to the left.

The ancient Christians derived their idea of the right side

as being the side of righteousness, the side of honor, from

the Scriptures: e.g., the Queen of heaven "stood on the right

hand, clothed in a vesture wrought with gold and diverse

colors" (Ps. 44:10); Jesus "sits at the right hand of the

Father" (Rom. 8:34), etc.

In general, the complete sign of the cross was and is

made to acknowledge that all of our faculties (mind, heart,

and soul) and all of our strength (shoulders) are being

dedicated to the service of God through the cross of Christ,

the sign of our redemption.

‘Mark all your actions with the sign of the life giving

Cross. Do not go out from the door of your house till you

have signed yourself with the Cross. Do not neglect that

sign whether eating or drinking or going to sleep, or in

the home or going on a journey. There is no habit to be

compared to it. Let it be a protecting wall around all your

conduct, and teach it to your children that they may

earnestly learn the custom.’ (St Ephrem the Syrian-4th century)

“Хресту Твоєму покланяємось, Владико, і святе

воскресіння Твоє славимо!” (тільки в день самого свята). "Почитання святого Господнього хреста, — каже

Праведний слуга Божий митрополит Андрей

Шептицький у своєму посланні про святий хрест, —

це одна з найважливіших сторінок почитання

Бога-Чоловіка... Знак святого хреста, роблений на собі,

це один з найстаріших звичаїв християн".

Святий хрест це вічно живий символ безконечної

Божої любови до нас, грішних, символ Христової

жертви, символ нашого відкуплення і спасення, символ

Христової перемоги над смертю і дияволом. Віддаючи

честь святому хресту, ми віддаємо честь Христовій

жертві, мукам і смерті. Кладучи на собі знак святого

хреста, ми кожного разу визнаємо свою віру в нашого

Спасителя.

Східна церква так високо почитає святий хрест, що

встановила в його честь аж кілька празників у році.

Найбільший празник у честь святого Господнього

хреста — це празник Всесвітнього Воздвиження

Чесного і Життєдайного Хреста.Тож погляньмо на

історію його установлення та різні обряди воздвиження.

Треба завважити, що у святкуванні цього празника

не йдеться про звичайне почитання-поклоніння святому

хрестові, яке буває в Хрестопоклінну неділю. Тут

ідеться про зміст свята та про що говорить сама назва

пра зник а : ВОЗДВИЖЕННЯ, що з н ачи ть

ПІДНЕСЕННЯ, тобто окремий урочистий обряд

почитання і прослави святого хреста.

Встановленню празника Воздвиження передувало

віднайдення святого хресного дерева, на якому помер

Ісус Христос. Християнська традиція передала нам

кілька різних легенд щодо віднайдення святого хреста,

з яких аж три приписують це святій Єлені († к. 330),

матері цісаря Костянтина Великого. Віднайдення

святого хреста мало бути в 326 році.

Воздвиження належить до 12 великих празників

нашої Церкви і має один день перед- і сім днів

попразденства. Субота й неділя перед і після

Воздвиження мають назву суботи і неділі перед і після

Воздвиження, бо в ці дні Апостол і Євангеліє говорять

про святий хрест.

Крім празника Воздвиження, наша Церква віддає

честь святому хресту ще в Хреспопоклонну неділю.

Цього дня, як і на Воздвиження, на утрені відбувається

винесення святого хреста і поклоніння йому, але без

обряду воздвиження — піднесення, яке є тільки на

празник Воздвиження.

How to communicate the Word of God to a modern

person? A report delivered by Fr. Roman Ostrovskyi

at the Synod of Bishops of UGCC Catechization must be present in every parish

community. It has to embrace all parishioners, from

children to adults. Catechetical ministering of adults must

be carried out according to their professions and interests. It

should be taken into consideration that catechetical work

among teachers, doctors and, generally, intellectuals, is not

developed.

This conclusion was made by Fr. Roman Ostrovskyi,

PhD in his report “The Word of God as a basement of

catechetical ministering” at the Synod of Bishops which is

taking place in Lviv-Briukhovychi from Sep 2-12, 2018,

a theme of what is “The Word of God and catechization”.

The speaker points out that nowadays in Ukraine the

interest in religions and, particularly, in Bible is highly

increasing. Nevertheless, it is somewhat incompatible with

the level of knowledge of the audience. A preacher or

catechist needs to know more so to be able to explain the

nuances of Christian theology.

In his report, Fr. Roman covered the following points:

catechization and the Word of God, biblical apostolate,

Services and the Word of God, a homily and the Word of

God with suggestions related to the content of a homily and

catechization.

Successful catechization, as for the speaker, would

obtain such characteristics as beginning with the Word of

God, learning about the Word of God, and as a consequence

– preparing faithful to the meeting with Christ – the Word

of God.

The report signals that recently UGCC has received

huge achievements in catechization of believers. According

to the statistics of 2018 the number of catechetical schools

and Bible clubs has increased.

However, Church ought to admit that catechization has

not become a permanent and fixed process of forming a

Christian in Ukraine. It is mainly narrowed to the First

Communion, and only at the separate parishes it is an

activity which embraces a wider circle of participants.

Fr. Roman assumes that we have to acknowledge – the

level of knowing and understanding Bible among our

faithful is very low or even absent. What means that we

have to work on it to improve the situation by including

more percent of Holy Bible into a homily.

Last, but not least is to teach people pray and share

faith. Saying everyday prayers, a person must not only

pronounce but comprehend them. UGCC Dept. of Information

дорослих. Катехитичне служіння дорослих має

проводитися відповідно до їхньої професії та зацікавлень.

Слід брати до уваги те, що катехитична праця з

вчителями, лікарями і взагалі інтелігенцією в нас не є

розвинута.

Такого висновку дійшов о. д-р Роман Островський у

своїй доповіді Боже Слово як основа катехитичного

служіння на Синоді Єпископів УГКЦ. Тема цьогорічного

Синоду – Боже Слово та катехизація.

Доповідач, аналізуючи виклики, які стоять сьогодні

перед Церквою, звертає увагу на те, що в українському

суспільстві існує величезна зацікавленість релігіями та

Біблією зокрема. Водночас, зауважує він, ця

зацікавленість поєднується з дуже низьким рівнем знань

слухачів… І катехит чи проповідник зобов’язаний знати

набагато більше від слухачів, щоби змогти викласти їм

науку Церкви та пояснити нюанси християнського

богослов’я.

Сьогодні все українське суспільство потребує

«катехизації». Отець д-р Роман Островський звертає

увагу, що українське суспільство є динамічне, воно

спонтанно реагує на всі ті події, що відбуваються, і

зауважує, що порівняно з іншими роками, довіра громадян

України до Церкви починає поступово зменшуватися.

Тому, можливо, Церкві слід шукати інші підходи та

способи, якими промовляти до сьогоднішнього

суспільства.

У своїй доповіді священик розглянув такі пункти:

катехизація та Слово Боже, біблійний апостолят,

Богослужіння та Слово Боже, проповідь та Слово Боже та

пропозиції щодо змісту проповіді та катехизації.

Успішна катехизація, на погляд доповідача, мала б

виглядати так: – починатися з Божого Слова;

– основне її завдання – пізнання Божого Слова;

– і як результат: підготувати слухачів до зустрічі з

Христом – Божим Словом.

У доповіді наголошується, що УГКЦ в останні роки

має неабиякі здобутки в катехизації вірних. «В УГКЦ

Боже Слово справді проголошується. Статистика за 2015

рік, що охопила УГКЦ по всьому світі, а також дані за

2018 рік УГКЦ в Україні показують, що кількість

катехитичних шкіл, біблійних гуртків збільшується. Отже,

щоразу більша кількість осіб залучена до катехитичного

вишколу. І це є плюсом», – сказав о. д-р Роман

Островський.

На його думку, завдання катехизації – формувати

особу так, щоб вона була здатна відповідати на життєві

виклики. Проте, доповідач зауважує, що в Церкві повинні чесно визнати, що катехизація ще не стала постійним, ані

сталим процесом формування християнина в Україні. У

переважній більшості вона є підготовкою до першої

Сповіді. І тільки на поодиноких парафіях – це діяльність,

яка триває довше і охоплює ширше коло учасників. Департамент інформації УГКЦ
