Sunday of the Prodigal Son
'Brethren, let us learn the meaning
of this mystery. For when the Prodigal
Son ran back from sin to his father's
house, his loving father came out to
meet him and kissed him. He restored
to the prodigal the tokens of his proper
glory, and mystical he made glad on
high, sacrificing the fatted calf. Let out
lives, then be worthy of the loving
Father who has offered sacrifice, and
the glorious Victim who is the Savior of
our souls.' (Vespers form the Sunday of
the Prodigal Son) The Parable of the Prodigal Son as with the previous
Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, continues to
expand on the theme of repentance. In fact, this parable
sets before us the complete picture of what exactly
'metanoia-conversion-navernenn] -truly is. To be in a state
of sin is to have distanced and exiled ourselves from our
loving and merciful God, for when we have in our sin
betrayed God and chosen to be slaves to our passions and
the negative influences of others and the material world
around us.
In our alienation from God we are called to return
from exile to our true home which is our Father. We can
only truly be ourselves when we are in union with our
heavenly Father. To be intentionally apart from Him is sin
and a loss of our senses. Repentance is not just a mere
acknowledgment of our sins, but requires
Осмислюючи її, (cont. on pg. 3) (prod. na stor. 3)

action on our part. We rise, and go home to our loving
- Father and his loving, merciful embrace. He waits for us,
and runs out to meet us, forgives us, celebrates our return,
and reintegrates us.
'O Lord, my God, I confess that I have sinned against
You in thought, word and deed. I also omitted to do what
Your holy law requires of me. But now with repentance
and contrition I turn again to Your love and mercy.
I entreat You to forgive me all my transgressions and to
cleanse me from all my sins. Lord, fill my heart with the
light of Your truth. Strengthen my will by Your grace.
Teach me both to desire and do only what pleases You.
Amen.'

Introducing a new 8-week Study Program for all our
Ukrainian Catholic parishes in Metro area called Oremus: A
Guide to Catholic Prayer
Do you find it easy to pray? Is prayer an integral part of your
day? Do you hear God’s voice in your daily life, and know
how to respond accordingly?
For many of us, the answer to these questions is, “no.” We
all desire an intimate relationship with God. But, since
learning to “say our prayers” as children, we never moved
beyond rote recitation to an authentic conversation with God.
The Oremus study program teaches you the essentials of an
effective and fruitful prayer life. Over the course of eight
weeks you will discover how God speaks to you, even in the
smallest encounters. Following the Tradition of the Catholic
Church and the wisdom of the saints, you will learn how to
express yourself to God in prayer, and how to hear his voice.
Join us even if you missed a session:
February 14 — Week 3: Lectio Divina
February 21 — Week 4: Relational Prayer
February 28 — Week 5: Spiritual Senses
March 7 — Week 6: Discernment in Prayer
March 14 — Week 7: Dealing with Distractions
March 21 — Week 8: Desolation and Consolation
