Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify!

Munera First of all, let me start by wishing you a Happy Me-morial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer! But please, may none of us forget what this holiday is about… we pause to remember all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country over its history. As much as we all love a good burger or hot dog as we fire up the grills for the first time may we first stop and offer a prayer for the fallen heroes. We also “thank” those who have served and pray for those serving in our military today. The Makings of a Priest – part 2. What kind of philosophy does a seminarian study? Philosophy means lover of wisdom or study of knowl-edge. A seminarian will study Ancient Philosophy, which is a study of the great classical figures and their writings such as: Plato, Aristotle, and other figures from Ancient Greece. From Ancient Philosophy he moves to the study of Medieval Philosophy, a time pe-riod when education and academics were being saved, by the Church and religious, after the Fall of Rome in 410 AD up until the Renaissance starting in 14th cen-tury; many universities were being founded during these years. These studies would include the writings of Boethius, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Anselm of Canterbury, St. Hildegard of Bin-gen, and others. These medieval scholars saved the writings of Ancient Philosophy and as they rediscov-ered them translated them into Latin. At one time most seminarians had a solid education in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas; this trend seems to be making a comeback. Once the study of Ancient and Classical Philosophy is finished the seminarian moves on to Modern Philoso-phy which covers philosophical thinking from the 17th century up to the 20th. Many German and French thinkers make up the study of Western Philosophy. Names such as: Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Soren, and Neitzsche would be the writ-ers of this time period, among others. Within the study of Modern Philosophy come other courses which take on their own identity such as: Epistemology, the the-ory of knowledge. Metaphysics, dealing with the first principles of things, abstract concepts such as time and space, being, substance, and cause. Logic, the study of reasoning conducted according to strict prin-ciples of validity. All of this education is to help the seminarian build a solid “thinking foundation” to prepare him for the study of Theology also known as the “Divine Science”. I must admit I found philosophy difficult most espe-cially Modern Philosophy. I needed extra credits for my degree and took an independent study in the Phi-losophy of the French Revolution; which I enjoyed much! More to come… Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
