This season is about outliers - people who, for one reason or another, lie outside the enveloping status quo culture of their time and place. Some choose to stand apart, some to rebel. Others are set apart by a culture which deems them outside the fold. In our four plays this season the outliers serve to dramatize the undercurrents of injustice and misunderstanding in the status quo cultures that envelop them.

What is theatrically exciting about these plays is how dramatic the action is. We get to meet characters that are renegades, rebels and agitators. This is fun stuff. Each story is packed with conflict. These are characters with unique voices and strong worldviews, going head to head against big obstacles.

Plays like these are my idea of a good time in the theatre - subversive behaviour, filled with conflict, strong characters, great writing and stories that are as emotionally gripping as they are politically charged.

A Call to Push Past Barriers:

Be bold & brave. Be open & inquisitive.Be yourself in the community. Hear from your neighbours.Dare to be present.Welcome to Theatre Beyond Walls – Consistently staging distinct experiences.

Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) believes there should be a more diverse representation of artists, audience members, and stories in our theatre in Canada. TPM aspires to be a leader locally, nationally, and internationally in establishing, promoting, and embracing collaborative and inclusive theatre practices that support and ignite the voices of unique artists, communities, and audiences.

Founded in 1968, TPM is Canada’s original alternative theatre company, currently developing and producing new Canadian plays, striving to articulate a distinct Canadian voice that reflects the complexity of our intercultural society.

TPM’s founder Jim Garrard set our mold when he said “There should be no walls of pre-conception about what theatre could be… producing plays that are new and different and thought-provoking is what’s important… to explore new models.”Since 1968, we’ve created over 600 new Canadian plays and built a rich legacy of groundbreaking theatre.

More than ever, we cherish your attendance, so that TPM can support and give voice to the next generation of artists and audiences - who embrace the path less travelled. Come push past barriers with us.

Theatre Passe Muraille – Consistently staging distinct experiences from our community and beyond.

“Theatre Passe Muraille has become the most totally eclectic theatre in town, offering a home to every kind of work imaginable… it makes for an explosion of joy like nowhere else.” - Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

A THEATRE PASSE MURAILLE PRODUCTION Adapted by Severn Thompson (from the book by Douglas Glover)Directed by Christine BrubakerDramaturgy by Christine Brubaker & Andy McKimStarring Severn Thompson & TBAProduction Design by Jennifer Goodman Sound Design and Original Composition by Lyon Smith

Production Sponsor: Jeff and Rita Rayman

Based on a true story from the life of Marguerite de Roberval and adapted from the Governor General’s Award-winning novel by Douglas Glover; Elle chronicles the ordeals and adventures of a young French woman marooned on the desolate Isle of Demons in 1542 at the time of France’s ill-fated third attempt to colonize Canada.

The Sieur de Roberval abandons his unruly young niece, her lover, and her nurse on the Isle of Demons. With real bears, spirit bears, and perhaps hallucinated bears, Elle brilliantly reinvents the beginnings of this country’s national narrative. While Marguerite de Roberval’s experience of Canada in 1542 is not as well known as Jacques Cartier’s, her open-minded engagement with that environment and its people was ahead of its time, and is certainly more relevant and inspiring for us today than Cartier’s attempt to colonize and conquer.

“Headstrong. What do you do with a headstrong girl? Maroon her on a deserted island lest she spread the contagion of discontent.  Forget her.”

A THEATRE PASSE MURAILLE PRODUCTION Written by Anusree RoyDirected by Thomas Morgan JonesStarring Anusree RoyProduction Design by David DeGrow

Winner of 2 Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding New Play & Outstanding Performance by a Female

NNNN - “[Pyaasa] is direct and passionate, and [Anusree’s] performance is

spine-tinglingly alive and confident... Superb.” - Glenn Sumi, NOW Magazine

HHHHH - “Roy’s ability to transform herself... is so magical you can

hardly believe [these characters] are played by the same person.” - Stage Door

Set in Calcutta, Pyaasa (meaning “thirsty” in Hindi) tells the story of Chaya, an eleven-year-old untouchable who dreams of nothing more than learning her times table. When Chaya’s mother begs a woman from a higher caste to give Chaya a job at a local tea stall, Chaya’s journey from childhood to adulthood begins and ends over ten days.

A moving and heartfelt play, Pyaasa illustrates with subtlety and nuanced truth the inequalities and injustices that persist through the Indian caste system. But it also speaks to us about the inequalities and injustices that are all around us here in our own community.

1968-2018 TPM 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PLAYS

From now until 2018, Theatre Passe Muraille will be programming one play

per season that comes from the vast canon of over 600 TPM productions.

The timeless play PYAASA will be the first of this celebration series. It was

first produced by TPM in the 2008-2009 season and was a sold-out success.

This remount production features the original creative team, including award-

winning writer/performer Anusree Roy.

“Life is not easy, Chaya ... but you have to believe in it.”

A THEATRE PASSE MURAILLE PRODUCTION Written by Jordi MandDirected by Sarah Garton StanleyDramaturgy by Andy McKimStarring Jakob Ehman, Meegwun Fairbrother & Sabryn RockProduction Design by John ThompsonSound Design by Debashis Sinha

A teenager is held in a department store security holding room by the female security guard who caught him shoplifting. As he tries to lure her into dropping the charges, they find themselves unexpectedly intertwined. When a familiar police officer arrives to discover them alone together, the tables are quickly turned.

Caught explores questions around gender politics, race, class, entitlement, blame, and consequence. It looks at how our upbringing and the opportunities we are given define who we are and our ability to thrive in the world. It focuses intensely on human interactions and the various ways we hurt both one another and ourselves

Jordi Mand’s recent successful play, Between the Sheets, has been produced across the country and abroad.

“We are basically just destroying each other.”

BARAM & SNIECKUSOCTOBER 21 – NOVEMBER 1, 2015

BACKSPACE

This award-winning comedy duo has created an all new hybrid theatre piece – some sketch, some improvisation – all laughs! Matt Baram (Nickelodeon’s Make it Pop) and Naomi Snieckus (CBC’s Mr. D), come together as sketch comedy partners and Second City alumni, who satirize the male/female dynamic in all of its complicated splendor. BARAM & SNIECKUS showcases the unique point of view and chemistry that comes from being a real life comedy couple.

From that familiar awkward first kiss to the unexplored territory of “spaceship infidelity”, the story of men and women will be told through a satirical sketch comedy lens, informed by Matt and Naomi’s personal experiences, fully heightened and explored in a unique and hilarious way. Their sharp wit and anarchic chemistry are not to be missed.

“If the Canadian government could recognize artistic excellence as well as it does

athletic excellence, these actors would be household names in Canada.”

A NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WITH AUDIENCE INVOLVEMENT

The BUZZ Program opens a two-way conversation between artists and their biggest ally, you, the audience. It is a low-tech presentation of all or part of a new play, which puts the play development process in front of the audience, utilizing your reaction as an integral part of this development. Afterward, the artists ask you specific questions about their play. We then give you the tools for a mediated discussion about the play, with the artists. PWYC AT THE DOOR

CAUGHT By Jordi Mand A Theatre Passe Muraille Production

BUZZ presentation in the TPM Backspace: Sept 5, 7.30pm

There will be a week-long workshop to focus on the play in greater detail and with an eye to how the play will be staged in that venue as part of Theatre Passe Muraille’s 2015.16 season.

Caught is being supported, in part, through The Collaborations, an initiative of the National Arts Centre, English Theatre.

BRAVE NEW WORLDBy Aldous Huxley

BUZZ presentation (location TBA): Fri Oct 16 & Sat Oct 17, 7.30pm

Litmus Theatre is a Resident Company with Theatre Passe Muraille and is also one of STAF’s Inaugural Annual Resident Companies. Both organizations are supporting Litmus as they develop and stage an immersive, site-specific theatre production based on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. At the end of an intensive 2-week period, this new Canadian adaptation will culminate with 2 public showings as part of TPM’s Buzz Program.

TO LIVE IN THE AGE OF MELTINGBy evalyn parry With the support of Theatre Passe Muraille

BUZZ presentation in the TPM Mainspace: Dec 11 & 12, 7.30pm

To Live in the Age of Melting is a new collaborative creation from performance innovator and musician evalyn parry and visual/video artist Elysha Poirier. Embarking on an evocative visual and sonic journey that travels from Franklin’s doomed 19th century expedition to contemporary Arctic sovereignty, from climate change to the human nervous system, the show investigates what the Arctic means to Canada and what Canada means to the Arctic. Integrating music, radio documentary, personal and crowd-sourced storytelling, the show invites the audience into a longitudinal conversation between the Canadian North and South. Along the way, it probes the nature of colonial legacy, tradition, and untold histories. What happens when old, frozen parts of the world we know - and parts of ourselves - begin to melt?

SEISMOLOGYBy Brandy Leary A production of Anandam Dancetheatre With the support of Theatre Passe Muraille and The Metcalf Foundation

BUZZ presentation in the TPM Mainspace: Dec 18 & 19, 7.30pm

Seismology is a visceral, interdisciplinary journey into our experiences of environmental decline.

Memory loss, melting, fault lines, extreme opposites, seismic waves, little earth quakes, ropes, ice, and dirt set the stage for Anandam Dancetheatre’s newest performance. Working in the spaces of radical hope and imaginary landscapes, we invite you into the intimate, immersive and participatory world of Seismology.

Seismology is a performance collaboration between Choreographer Brandy Leary, Sonic Artist/Composer James Bunton, Visual/Video Artist Eamon Mac Mahon, Dramaturge Soraya Peerbaye, LX Designer Siobhan Sleath and dance/circus artists Amy Hampton, Ryan Lee, Marie France Forcier, Scott Waters, Michael Caldwell and Louis Laberge-Côté and has been supported by a creation process involving Anandam Dancetheatre’s inaugural AIR (Audience in Residence) initiative.

PLAY YOUR PART ATTHEATRE PASSE MURAILLE

Relationships are at the core of our work at Theatre Passe Muraille. We want to create an environment that is conducive to audience participation, dialogue and moderated interactions.

Talk BacksWe offer free talk backs on the first Sunday after the opening of each Theatre Passe Muraille production. We often hold them for our “Guest Company Series” as well. These talk backs are facilitated to encourage more dialogue than a traditional Q&A.

Egg Rolls with AndyOn the Wednesday after opening, this free pre-show program features Artistic Director Andy McKim in conversation with an artist from the play, or a local expert, to talk about the way in which that piece of theatre is contributing to a broader conversation. We will put an audio clip of these conversations on our web site after the fact.

Educational Programs: Student Matinees, Tours, Workshops & Talk BacksStudent matinees are listed for each show. They can alternatively be booked on an as-needed basis, so educators can select a more suitable day. We also offer pre, or post, performance workshops and/or theatre tours at low cost (or free-of-charge!) All student performances are followed by a talk back.

Our bar is a great place to host parties, fundraisers, cabarets and readings – or somewhere to have a drink before and after the show. We have regular programming, but we’re always looking for art that needs a home. Theatre Passe Muraille provides accessible opportunities for artists to interact with the theatre through a variety of programs. If you’re interested in getting involved, email [email protected]

Body Brake

Curated by Brandy Leary /Anandam Dancetheatre

Part cabaret, part performance installation, part immersive environment, completely fun! Get your art on with this diverse and dissonant evening of inclusive and radical performances from Toronto’s finest. Body Brake combines the energy of a rock concert in an evening of dance. It freely and irreverently mixes popular, classical, contemporary and post contemporary styles into a large performance party.

Crapshoot

Curated by Megan Poole

Emerging artists take to the stage and are given between 5-10 minutes to perform whatever they’ve got to show. At the end of each night, the audience votes for their favourite performance and that artist/group is invited to perform for 20 minutes at the next event. It’s sort of like The Hunger Games meets Show-and-Tell. Sort of.

The Songbook Series

Curated by The Family Band

At the Songbook Series, we celebrate the work of an artist, group, era or style that had a significant impact on our musical history. Hosted by the Family Band, we invite a variety of musicians from all disciplines to re-imagine that music in their own way. It’s a night to hear your favourite tunes like you’ve never heard them before.

Pearle Harbour NEW presents: CANADIAN CONTENT-ED!

Pearle Harbour—all American, world-wartime gal—drops a bombshell on Toronto: CANADIAN CONTENT-ED! Part late-night television, part mandated nationalism, completely and hopelessly tragicomic, Pearle is your guide to the contemporary Canadian experience.

Written and performed by Justin Miller, this acidic blend of drag and bouffon will have you sobbing with laughter. But don’t worry: together, we’ll be U. S. of A-okay.

50TH ANNIVERSARYDOLLAR A WEEK CAMPAIGN

To celebrate in TPM style, we’re presenting hit plays from our past, beginning with the magnificent Pyaasa by Anusree Roy. We are also preparing a commemorative publication of TPM’s history, which will be made available to the public in 2018.

In order to make this celebration all that we hope it to be, we have launched the Dollar-A-Week Campaign. You can recognize our 50 year history with a $50 donation or why not make it $52, a dollar for every week. This ambitious campaign will bring us to a total of $100,000 raised over four years. We’ve already reached $25,000 in year one!

Together with others, your contribution creates an absolutely vital resource for TPM, ensuring that works from independent, emerging, marginalized, inter-cultural artists and companies are brought to life on stage.

The Gladiators of Canadian theatre meet face to face in the Ultimate Theatre Championship to determine this country’s greatest welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight actors! Bare-knuckle monologues, grudge-match scene work and nail-biting stage combat will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Created by artist Rebecca Northan, the UTC is like no other form of spontaneous theatre. UTC 2015 was a huge success featuring some of our most notable Canadian theatre artists. If you missed the action, don’t waste any time, book your tickets in advance to secure your spot in the centre ring!

See page 19 for information about tickets.
