@ANDYMCKIM

“I’d rather live in a world where my life is surrounded by mystery than live in a world so small that my mind could comprehend it.”- Henry Emerson Fosdick

We are interested in the harmony of art and entertainment and while we may not seek to make theatre for everybody, we do seek to make theatre for anybody. My greatest pleasure is sitting in our theatre with a heterogeneous audience, captivated by the diverse work of our wide range of artists. I am so proud that our theatre offers that experience.

At the heart of TPM’s vision is the commitment to produce plays that will resonate with our time and place, here in Toronto in 2014. To that end, we have a commitment to showcase the voices of marginal, emerging and inter-cultural artists amongst other voices.

With that in mind, the thrill of coming to the theatre for me is the possibility that what I see will lift a corner of the veil on the mystery of life and ask me to reassess what I think. I thrive on finding plays that challenge me to reconsider my understanding of the world. Plays that will provoke me to see something new I had never considered. With the diverse range of voices in this season I am certain you too will be introduced to a challenging set of different worldviews.

After you have been to the theatre I would like to hear from you about what mysteries you have uncovered and what pleasures you have had.

“Theatre Passe Murail le has become the most total ly eclectic theatre in town, offering a home to every kind of work imaginable... it makes for an explosion of joy like nowhere else.” - Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

Founded in 1968, Theatre Passe Muraille is Canada’s first theatre company developing and producing new Canadian work. Theatre Passe Muraille operates out of a designated historical building; the former Nasmith Bakery and Stables. But true to name, productions also take place “beyond walls” at site-specific locations across Toronto.

Theatre Passe Muraille is known for developing pioneering and daring Canadian theatre, but we exist to support our communities. From encouraging independent and emerging artists, and multicultural work, to inspiring our staff and artists to work collaboratively, Theatre Passe Muraille works to ensure all voices are represented on our stage.

The Blues is the lifeblood of the play, so I also set out to dramatize the complexities of race, gender and most importantly Culture.” – Raoul Bhaneja, Creator, Performer & Musician

Condemned and exiled, Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) crossed continents searching for the missing link. His ground-breaking discoveries in human evolution transcended barriers between Faith and Science.

In The De Chardin Project, Jesuit priest, scientist and philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (Cyrus Lane), suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, finds himself beyond the phenomenal world in an encounter with an enigmatic guide (Maev Beaty) who leads him on the ultimate adventure: the excavation of himself.

A THEATRE PASSE MURAILLE PRODUCTION

By Sara Farb Directed by Richard Greenblatt Starring Sara Farb

Written and performed by up-and-coming playwright Sara Farb, R-E-B-E-C-C-A is a personal piece based on Farb’s younger sister who was born seven weeks prematurely, and diagnosed as developmentally delayed at a very young age.

The story centers on this real-life Rebecca, as well as an alternate Rebecca – the one that might have been, had she been born in July. We meet the two Rebeccas as they prepare to celebrate their respective 18th birthdays.

Although universes apart, as the play unfolds these two manage to find a connection, uniting in an unexpected and powerful way.

“Treasure this book!!! Also, read it!!!” — A Globe and Mail Best Books Selection“... insane, hilarious and irreverent ...” — Alice Sebold

She has a dead-end job, a bland boyfriend, and an incredibly bad attitude. But after reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic boy book, Treasure Island, she is inspired to redesign her life around what she calls the novel’s “Core Values”: Boldness, Resolution, Independence, and Horn-Blowing. Needing a talisman on her journey to bolder selfhood, she acquires a parrot who refuses to follow the script, and winds up on a domestic adventure more frightening than anything she’d originally planned.

The Sound of Cracking BonesLe bruit des os qui craquent

FEBRUARY 14 » 28, 2015 (English language premiere) MARCH 3 » 7 (en français)

PRODUCED BY PLEIADES THEATRE WITH THE SUPPORT OF THEATRE PASSE MURAILLE

By Suzanne Lebeau Translated by Julia Duchesne & John Van Burek Directed by John Van Burek

“The shock of emotion and revolt could not be more explosive.” - Voir Québec

A poetic, inspiring story of two kids in their desperate flight to freedom. Elikia saw her life shattered by a chaotic, lawless civil war. When little Joseph arrives in the rebel camp, destined like her to become a child soldier, he rekindles Elikia’s lost humanity, which gives her the courage to break the chain of violence.

We only learn of their nameless plight through the testimony of a nurse before an invisible Tribunal, which can only be us.

Winner, Governor General’s Award for Drama (2010), translated into 7 languages, performed across the globe, the English language premiere!

Relationships are at the core of our work at Theatre Passe Muraille. We want to create an environment that is conducive to audience participation, dialogue and moderated interactions.

TALK BACKSWe offer free talk backs on the first Sunday after the opening of each Theatre Passe Muraille production. These talk backs are facilitated to encourage more dialogue than a traditional Q&A.

EGG ROLLS WITH ANDYOn the Wednesday after opening, this free pre-show program features Artistic Director Andy McKim in conversation with an artist from the play, or a local expert, to talk about the way in which that piece of theatre is contributing to a broader conversation.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NIGHTSMeet other people who live and work in our community by attending a complimentary “Neighbourhood Night” preview performance for our productions. Live or work near the theatre? Simply email [email protected] to be added to our list.

WE ARE LAUNCHING THE DOLLAR A WEEK CAMPAIGN

For The Dollar A Week Campaign we want to raise at least $100,000 within the next four years. This ambition is inspired by the fact that TPM approaches its 50th Anniversary four years from now, so asking for $50 a year from you to recognize our 50 years of developing new work seems like a perfect fit.

Your funding support will do a few things — increase our capacity to create a stable institutional environment for the development and production of new work, formalize and better resource our Resident Artist/Company program and strengthen our ability to spend more money on the art we are creating.

Together with others, your contribution creates an absolutely vital resource for TPM, ensuring that works from independent, emerging, marginal, inter-cultural artists and companies are brought to life on stage.

Theatre Passe Muraille’s goal remains clear: to develop, disseminate, produce, showcase and promote, locally, nationally and internationally, work that represents and propagates values of inclusion, social justice and meaningful interactions between communities. Join us on this mission. Make a difference today.

More than ever, we cherish your attendance, so that TPM can support and give voice to the next generation of artists — who embrace the path less travelled.

We are looking for 500 people to contribute the equivalent of a dollar a week. Or 2 dollars a week. Or even a dollar a day. From now until our 50th Anniversary.

Can we count on you?
