Here at The Woolly Shepherd we are very proud to be different and when you see our products for the first time we hope that you’ll instantly know why.

Our products are manufactured from 100% British Wool and we believe we are the only company using wool as the main component of acoustic treatments.

Every Woolly Shepherd product is handmade by one of our team of specialist fabricators and individually inspected prior to packaging.

All of the material used to make the acoustic elements of our products is manufactured from 100% renewable natural fibres and, with the exception of printed fabrics such as those for photo panels, all of our covers are either UK wool felt or organic cotton fabrics.*

This brochure contains brief details of our product range, some background information about the company, and a section about working with us. We hope you’ll find it interesting and informative.* Photo panels are 100% recycled polyester.

The Woolly Shepherd is an ethical, customer-focused company dedicated to the design and manufacture

of high-performance acoustic products made from totally renewable natural resources.

We provide high-performance, professionally tested products at competitive prices. These are delivered with remarkable flexibility in design and exemplary levels of customer service.

We are affiliate members of the Institute of Acoustics and as such adhere to the IOA’s code of conduct.

As much as we are encouraged to do so, we do not seek to shout about the sustainability and green credentials of our products, as we prefer to trade on the fact that our products are highly effective, beautiful and totally unique in the world of room acoustics.

The company was originally formed in 2009 and rapidly became a creative environment for the use of low-value fleece. In 2011, as

wool prices started to improve, the company started to look for higher value uses for the wool felts that it produced.

MD, Tim Simmons, inspired by the use of sheep’s wool in loudspeaker cabinets, started to investigate the possibility of its application as a room treatment and, before long, was designing the company’s first cloud with his colleagues.

Having refined the recipe a few times and added a range of shapes

and solutions for a variety of environments, we now offer genuine high-performance alternatives to mineral-based absorbers.

From its earliest incarnation, the Woolly Shepherd has sought to champion the cause of sustainable business, so beyond the design of our products we also look to the founding principles of sustainable development for the design of our wider business model.

Creating Jobs and Developing Skills

All of our products are produced by skilled staff who are involved in

every part of the production process, from the cutting of raw materials to the assembly of each item.

We feel that it is important for everyone who works with us to understand each part of the process and to share the responsibilities of stock control and quality assurance.

The final assembly of each product is usually undertaken by individual members of the team, with each item double checked upon completion, to ensure that our high standards are maintained.

Our methods of manufacture continue to be unashamedly labour intensive and help to provide much-needed, long-term employment.

“Unashamedly labour-intensive” – Director Tim Simmons is passionate about ethical working practices

Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do

Featured Project - The Ocean Restaurant

Ocean is the number-one destination in Exmouth for entertainment and

fun for the whole family, bringing together a state-of-the-art bowling alley, soft play areas, arcade machines and a range of food options.Unfortunately, this wide range of noisy activities, combined with the hard surfaces of the interior, made conversations in the bar/restaurant area very difficult. We were contacted by the owners and invited to carry out a survey of the area and discuss potential solutions to the problem.

Following on from our visit and discussions, it was decided that the idea of installing clusters of stone circles/pebbles would fit very well with the wider design of the building and its seafront location.

Installing clusters amounting to 45m2, we were able to reduce the reverberation time from 1.91s to 1.2s, producing a space where conversations can now be held comfortably, even during the busiest periods.

Looking good and sounding great: the limpets complement the

existing decor perfectly, and the neutral shades will look good for

years to come

“Woolly Shepherd provided Ocean with a great all-round service, working with us to identify and resolve our acoustic issues in a large dining area. The stone circle absorbers also added to the aesthetics of the environment creating a much improved customer experience. I would certainly recommend.”

Featured Project - The Eden green Hub

The green Build Hub, a truly innovative, not to mention BREEAM Outstanding building,

is the new base for Cornwall Sustainable Building Trust, at the Eden Project. The hub was built to showcase, monitor and demonstrate the very best that sustainable building has to offer. Therefore we were delighted and honoured to be asked to highlight our products in such a prestigious building.

Green acoustics: a selection of suspended absorbers and woven ‘Axminster’ panels

The main space has a very tall ceiling, a large area of glazing and hard surface finishes to the floor, ceiling and walls. Spaces that are designed in this manner have a multitude of positive attributes, but the resulting acoustics are almost always problematic.

Page 11: The Woolly Shepherd - Scottish Sensory CentreThis brochure contains brief details of our product range, some background information about the company, and a section about working with

Featured Project - South Devon UTC

The aptly named Challenge Arena is typical of the majority of large sports halls up and down the country. It is a large, box-shaped space covered

entirely in hard, finished surfaces which make it ideal for a wide range of sports activities, but far from ideal in terms of its acoustic properties.

As the 350m2 arena is used for a multitude of activities ranging from student group work, competitions and presentations through to sports such as badminton, football and basket ball, the acoustic of the room is really important to the college.

Wool-covered absorbers in an array of natural shades

Following the guidelines in BB93 – Acoustic Design of Schools: Performance standards – we agreed a target reverberation time of 1.5s (start time of 5s). The installation was completed in two days and the target time achieved.

Partnership ProjectsIN ADDITION TO OUR STANDARD RANgE OF PRODUCTS, WE ALSO HAVE A TRACK RECORD OF WORKINg WITH OUR CUSTOMERS TO PROVIDE THEM WITH SIgNIFICANT VARIATIONS AND EVEN COMPLETELy NEW PRODUCTS...

The Haven was developed over two years, working with a professional musician from the BBC

National Orchestra of Wales. We were originally approached following our appearance on BBC Countryfile and asked whether we would be interested in trying to develop a small screen that would protect musicians from the instruments playing directly behind them.Having established the materials best suited to achieving the desired acoustic results, we then set about identifying someone to work with us on designing a suitable frame in which to house our acoustic pads. Working with a local steel fabrication company,

we produced our first prototype which was trialled by members of the orchestra.Acting on feedback from the trials, we adjusted the design and

sent the revised screens back to the orchestra. This revised design is the one that we currently use and we have now supplied screens to three additional orchestras.

Partnership Projects

These acoustic booths with wall and ceiling panels were our first experience of

making panels that needed to accommodate ceiling lighting, light switches and sockets.Using the type of soft materials that we make our products from presented us with a real headache, as they do not easily lend themselves to clean, precise lines.Working with a local furniture upholsterer, we learnt how to overcome this problem and subsequently arranged workshops to train our team to produce the same high-quality finishes.

Tthe Woolly Shepherd is constantly striving to improve its offer and expand our business

opportunities, but this will never be done at the expense of watering down our commitment to ethical business practices.

This means that it matters to us who we choose to distribute our products. We only work with companies that we feel share our customer service values.

Natural Acoustics - Suspended Acoustic Clouds

CLOUD DATA

Our woolly acoustic clouds first came to prominence in the spring of 2012, when our company presented our products to Deborah Meaden and Ellie Harrison in a mock Dragons Den feature on BBC Countryfile.

Since then we have worked hard to ensure that our clouds meet the high standards of performance that you would expect from the very best manmade fibre and foam-based absorbers.

Unlike many of our competitor’s suspended products, our clouds and other ceiling suspended options, absorb sound across their entire surface area, making them exceptionally good value for money.

Each and every cloud is made here in our Somerset workshop and individually inspected before being packaged.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Natural Colours: Clotted Cream, Heather Grey, Dove Grey

Optional Dyed Colours: Red, Golden Yellow, Chocolate, Violet, Emerald, Pink, Sky Blue, Burgundy

Approx. Dimensions: 105cm x 64cm x 10cm

Approx Weight: 5.0kg - 5.5kg

Safety: Euroclass fire rated (BS EN ISO 11925-2: 2010) Class E

Notes: Clouds are supplied complete with all fixings and are designed to be hung at 250mm from the ceiling. Taking the depth of the cloud into account and the fixings, the cloud will lower the height of your ceiling by approx. 440mm.

All wool components are treated against moth with a chemical called Eulan SPA (approved under the Oekotex 100 certification of textiles). This protects the wool for the lifetime of the fibres.

Natural Acoustics - Ellipse

ELLIPSE DATA

Perhaps not so surprisingly we have found that our acoustic clouds tend to provoke a ‘Marmite’ kind of response from potential customers. Many approach us because they simply love and specifically want clouds, whereas others like the notion of natural materials, but are not keen on the idea of adorning their rooms with clouds.

For these customers we offer the option of alternative, more conventional, shapes such as rectangles, circles and ellipses.

The ellipse is an interesting shape for a number of reasons, not only is it simply very pleasing to the human eye, but its acoustically reflective properties are well documented and have given rise to such architectural revelations as whisper galleries/chambers.

The ellipse is made using the exact same recipe as the clouds and therefore boasts the same Class A performance as our flagship product.

Natural Acoustics - The Limpet

The Limpet was introduced to provide a solution for rooms with lower ceiling heights, where either wall and ceiling combinations were needed or where wall space was at a premium.

As the name suggests, this range of Class A absorbers are mounted flush to the ceiling surface.

Initially only available in cloud shapes, we now offer this option in any of our standard shapes and are happy to discuss alternatives to these where needed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Natural Colours, Optional Dyed Colours, Approx. Dimensions & Approx. Weight: Please see details for non-limpet equivalents i.e. wall panels, clouds, stones etc.

Natural Acoustics - Open Plan Screening

OPEN PLAN SCREENING DATA

These screens are constructed using the same combination of natural materials as our orchestra screens (The Haven), developed for and trialed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

This winning combination of materials provides both absorption and transmission loss providing increased speech privacy and reduced reverberation in one.

These high quality screens are made from 1mm, powder coated, steel and can be made to most sizes.

When used in combination with high quality ceiling absorbers (≤0.95 (95%)) these screens can help eliminate the two biggest causes of dissatisfaction with open plan working.

Natural Acoustics - Orchestra Screen The Haven

ORChESTRA SCREEN ThE hAvEN DATA

The Woolly Shepherd has worked closely with leading musicians and conductors to design, develop and manufacture this range of highly effective absorption screens, using natural fibres, for musicians who need to protect their ears during regular practice and performance, particularly from players who sit behind them.

“The Haven has changed my playing life in the studio and I know that my colleagues who use them are really happy with them.”

Andy Everton, Principal (3rd) Trumpet, BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Hearing loss for professional musicians has long been a problem due to prolonged exposure to the relatively loud sound of live music, whether it’s rock and roll or classical. This is particularly an issue for younger players and those who teach them, who are now becoming aware of the potential dangers of close proximity of instruments.

Natural Acoustics - Fabric Panel The Wellington

STANDARD WALL PANEL DATA

The Wellington High Performance Acoustic Wall Board is a Class A absorber, developed as a result of acoustic testing undertaken in our local town of Wellington, Somerset.

As our clouds absorb across their entire surface area they represent especially good value for money, which meant that our original wall panels could seem a less attractive option, in terms of price.

Having tried alternative combinations of natural fibres and adjusted the densities of some of our materials, we are now happy that our acoustic panels offer fantastic value for money and hope that you will think so too.

Made entirely from natural and sustainably sourced materials and upholstered in organic calico or a breathable fabric of your choice (this is not included in the price below), The Wellington is suitable for use in a range of indoor environments that suffer from a lack of acoustic absorption.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Available Colours: All of our panels are upholstered in a natural organic calico (as seen above), but should you prefer to have them covered in an alternative, we can offer a wide range of fabrics, or where suitable, they can be covered in a wool felt.

Optional Dyed Colours: Red, Golden Yellow, Chocolate, Violet, Emerald, Pink, Sky Blue, Burgundy

Approx. Dimensions: 1.17m x 0.70m x 0.065m

Weight: 9.3kg

Natural Acoustics - Loudspeaker Wool

For loudspeaker manufacturers and the DIY enthusiast alike we offer this 100% UK carded wool for cabinet damping, or tuning as we prefer to call it.

If you get the density right and do not over or under stuff your cabinets, then the resulting sonic gains are guaranteed to impress even the most discerning audiophile ear.

In the pursuit of perfection, we have not only tested this wool against manmade alternatives such as profiled foam, we have tested this against a host of other wools.

Almost every wool that we tried brought pros and cons to the listening experience, but this wool, we felt, came closest to rolling all of the pros into one.

We have personally used this wool in closed box, ported and transmission lines and been absolutely delighted with the results in each case.

If you would like to discuss your requirements at no obligation, please get in touch.

“The change in the sound (rather the lack of sound!)was amazing at lunchtime! People thought the clouds looked

really “cool” and they definitely noticed the difference!”
