Inside this Issue: Pastor Lisa Richardson This summer the Thursday morning Women’s Bible Study is reading through

the Book of Acts in the New Testament. It is the exciting story of the begin-

ning of the early church of how the Gospel, the good news of Jesus was

beginning to be shared to all people. Acts 2:41-47 gives us a picture of

community life in the early church:

Those who welcomed the message were baptized. They devoted themselves to

the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Awe came upon everyone; because many wonders and signs were being done

by the apostles…They would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the

proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together

in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and gener-

ous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by

day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

It is a picture of the life we are called to in our community of faith here in Abiding Savior as

well. First of all we are a community of believers living out our Baptism. God calls from our

old ways to the new way of the kingdom of God. Each day we live in repentance and

forgiveness as children of God. We are called to be a community caring and sharing

fellowship. We are a community who cares for each other and for others following Jesus’

example. This happens in so many ways here at Abiding Savior. One of the strong gifts of

our congregation is hospitality and welcoming. We share in community and fellowship as

we share meals together, pray for one another, send cards, phone calls, bringing food in

time of need, care for one another and sharing life together in joys and sorrows and all that

life brings. We are a learning and worshipping community. As in the early church, it is a joy to

worship together, pray together, praise God, and share the Lord’s Supper. This is at the

heart of all we do together. We come to learn and grow in our faith. We bring our children

to learn and know how much God loves each one.

We are also a witnessing, serving, community, living out our mission to love God and love

God’s people. Are there new neighbors moving into your neighborhood this summer? Are

there people you know who have been searching for a church home? A simple and natural

way to share your faith would be to tell others about the ministries of Abiding Savior and

invite a neighbor, friend or family member to church with you. We will be participating in the

Mounds view parade on Saturday August 17th to invite people from the neighborhood and

let them know we are here in the community. The snack pack ministry program at Pinewood

Elementary made a difference in 41 children lives each week as over 622 snack packs were

given out to children in need. There are over 100 neighborhood children that have a safe

place to spend the summer and be feed through the partnership with of Community Part-

have them ready to purchase this fall.

    Watch for updates.

    Cookbook Update

We are currently taking bids for our new carpeting which is sched-

uled to be installed beginning August 12. I say scheduled because

we need to be sure we have the funds to pay for the carpeting plus

make our tithing gift to ministry beyond the walls of our church. We

have two more months to try to secure the necessary funding.

Please continue to keep your pledges up to date and consider mak-

ing some of your pledged gifts early as we prepare for the August

    install. Thank you!!

    Capital Campaign Update

The first meeting of what would become today’s Abiding Savior

Lutheran Church began in the living room of the Gordon Larson home

at the corner of Groveland Road and Hwy 10. It was Palm Sunday,

April 3, 1938. Eight families brought their children to the Larson home

where they held their first Sunday School.

The group of believers was led by Pastor Kristopher Hagen from

Columbia Heights. The Sunday School continued and within just a few

weeks, the ladies decided to start a Ladies Aid. They began meeting

at the G.P Welk home and eleven ladies became charter members of

the Ladies Guild in May of 1938.As summer came, the temperatures

made it hard to be comfortable inside the Larson home for the grow-

ing congregation. That was when they moved worship services out-

side under the trees until the fall when cooler weather made the

    crowded inside space bearable.

In the fall of 1939, plans were made to build a community room onto

the Larson home. The first service was held in the new space on

December 4, Building the Community Room addition to the Larson

home, fall, 1939. Building the Community Room addition to the Larson home, fall, 1939.

  • Happenings Abiding Savior 3

    Women’s Bible Study

Every Thursday morning, just before 10:00 am, you

can hear women of all ages coming down the hall

toward the Coffee House to meet for a special hour

of singing together, praying for others, caring for one

another, hearing God’s Word, sharing fellowship and

delicious home-made treats. We are beginning the

study of the Book of Acts.

It’s a wonderful time and you are invited and

welcomed to come! The Bible Study continues

    through the summer months.

    Giving to the Mission

    Endowment Fund of

    Abiding Savior

    Lutheran Church is

    Simple and Joyful!

When you make or revise your Will or Trust or review

your life insurance contracts or retirement funds,

please consider Abiding Savior as one of your

    beneficiaries using the following language:

    I bequeath ___ % (or $ ___ ) of my estate to

Abiding Savior Lutheran Church located at

8211 Red Oak Drive, Mounds View, MN,

designated for the Mission Endowment Fund of

    Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.

A new ministry that just began is the “Garden of Grace” in

our church yard. Thirty cubic yards of dirt was hauled in, the

grass was tilled into a garden, raised beds were built and

seeds were planted. A miracle is happening as these seeds

are beginning to grow into produce to be given to the Food

Shelf for neighbors in our community who are hungry. The

seeds have already started to sprout! We have zucchini,

broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, onions, cucumbers, green

beans, pumpkins, squash and African greens. And it is

hoped that the garden will produce over 500 lbs. of food.

That is the way of God, always at work bringing new life,

new hope, new joy, taking us away from ourselves to care

about others. This is the way of God working in us through

the Holy Spirit ,bringing joy into our lives by gathering us to-

gether to be nurtured in faith by God’s Word and sent out to

bear much fruit by serving our neighbor in love.

Dear friends in Christ, may we continue to be like that early

church we are studying about in the book of Acts. May we

say with our words and with our lives as those early Chris-

tians: “We cannot keep from speaking about what we have

    seen and heard.” Acts: 2:20

Go out with joy and be led forth in peace,

    Pastor Lisa

    Stewardship Corner

    with Pastor Ryan

Stewardship is what you do with

what God entrusts to you. You

    see, in reality, everything belongs

to God and God just lets us use

what is God’s while we are here

on earth. This includes our cars

    and houses, everything we call

our own, even those we love and

those who love us. We are not

owners of our possessions, we are

    stewards. Stewards do not own

things, they take care of what is

    the owners.

If we believe that everything be-

longs to God and we are called

to be good stewards of what God

has entrusted to us, it begs the

question how are we doing at be-

ing stewards? Is what we are do-

ing with our time and talents what

God would want us to do? Are

    we volunteering and working to

make the world a better place for

    others, not just ourselves?

And what about with our financial

    resources? Are we sharing with

others as God asks helping to

meet the needs of those who do

not have enough? Or are we

    keeping our resources for our-

selves and our family not sharing

with others? Generosity is a mat-

ter of faith. Faith is something first

    between us as individuals and

    God, and secondly between us

and our neighbors (faith in ac-

tion). We are called to live gener-

ous lives giving from our abun-

dance to further the work of God

and to meet the needs of all of

God’s children. We are called to

    be good stewards.

of you and we cannot wait to help our neighbors in need!

Notes from the Music Department July 4th and 5th

Please note that the church office will be closed for

the 4th of July weekend on both July 4th and 5th!

The office will reopen on Monday morning, July 8th at

    8:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m.

Please have a safe and happy long weekend!

I want to invite YOU to join us in singing in our

Summer Choir this summer. Simply show up

at 8:15, before the Sunday morning services,

on July 21 and/or August 25. We will practice an an-

them together (nothing too complicated!) and share

it during the 9:00 worship service. This is a fun, low-

key opportunity for anyone – any age, individuals or

families - who has ever thought about singing in

choir. You can come for either one or both of the

    Sundays.

We would love to have you sing with us!

Outdoor Worship– July 14 Coat Drive Collection

The Social Concerns Network (of local

churches) will sponsor its 16th annual

coat give-away in October. If you are

cleaning closets or checking out garage sales,

please consider picking up winter coats in good con-

dition, especially children’s sizes. Boots, snow pants,

mittens, and new hats are also needed. Bring them

to the Social Concerns trunk at church anytime be-

tween now and October. Last year, Abiding Savior

contributed 140 of the 1,103 coats collected, helping

surpass the goal of 1,000. Thank you for thinking of

    your neighbors in need!

On Sunday, July 14, we will be outside for

worship at 9:00 and 11:00 (weather permit-

ting) and there will be an ice cream social

    between services that day.

Come early or stay late for this fun time of

summer fellowship under the big oaks in our

    church yard!

Walk A Mile For Our Neighbors

Mark your calendars for the 3rd annual

Walk A Mile for Our Neighbors

    Sunday, August 4

    at Silverwood Park.

Abiding Savior has contributed $500 to the challenge

grant so walkers do not need to collect pledges. Just

come and walk with members of other area churches

and you’ll help CEAP prevent homelessness and the

Community Support Center get people in need

connected with the service available to help. Cash

donations are gladly accepted, as the need is great.

Last year over $7,000 was raised by 500 walkers.

Put on your walking shoes and join us!

    Summer: Time to S-T-R-E-T-C-H?

The ELCA has a “Live Well” online resource named

the “Go! Challenge” for adults and children. How

many times do we just coast along vowing to some

day get more serious about eating better, increasing

our physical activity, or nurturing our relationships with

friends, family, and God? This challenge helps peo-

ple take stock of their current habits, identify a

“stretch” goal, and track your activity for four weeks.

Maybe this summer is this time for you to focus on one

goal whether it is starting the day with a healthy

breakfast, reconnecting with a friend, or incorporat-

ing a daily walk into your routine. Sometimes the big

picture is too overwhelming. That’s what I like about

this program. Focus on one healthy change you can

make in your life. No matter how small it seems it is a

    step in the right direction.

I have “Go! Challenge” tracking forms for adults and

children. You could even do something as a family

this summer. I have a lot of resources/ideas to get

you started. Let me know how I can support you.

  • Children’s, Youth and Family Ministry 6

This summer, children are invited to join Patty during

the sermon time for kid-friendly stories and activities

during our 11:00 service each Sunday, as well as

during the 9:00 service on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays

    of each month.

    2nd – 5th Grade Ministry

Lunch Bunch: Sunday, July 21, noon-2:00 Have you ever made pasta from scratch - not from a

box? Here’s your chance. Stay after church (or come

back, if you came to the early service ) to make and

eat lunch with your friends. Depending on the weather,

we’ll have a few outdoor or indoor games afterward.

    Suggested donation is $2/child.

Please sign up on the Children’s Ministry bulletin board

or contact Patty. Parents interested in helping with

    supervision, please sign up, too.

VBS 2013: Mark your calendars for August 5-9, 9:00-noon, and get ready to pray, learn about prayer,

pray, sing about prayer, pray, think about prayer,

pray, talk about prayer – we’re going to the HOP

    (Heart of Prayer)

Kids (3 years old and potty-trained through those

about to enter 6th grade) and volunteers, here’s your

chance to experience a week of faith, fun and

friends. We are again welcoming Cross of Glory

Lutheran Church in Mounds View and Atonement

Lutheran Church in New Brighton as partners in our

Vacation Bible School program. In addition, we are

hoping to reach out and fill community needs by

offering the program free of charge this year,

although donations are accepted and appreciated.

PLEASE HELP VBS HAPPEN: A sign-up center for volunteers is posted in the narthex, or you may contact Patty. Guide, supervise,

assist and enjoy the children as they move through

    their morning.

If you are unavailable to help that week, consider

donating or loaning supplies listed on the display

board next to the volunteer sign-up. Cash dona-

tions to help support this free program can also be made in the church office.

    Kids’ Road Rally:

Wednesday, July 17, 5:30-7:00 Bring your bikes, trikes, skates, scooters or Big Wheels and take a test drive on a course set up in the parking lot. Remember your helmets!

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll move the fun indoors. Ice cream (cones, floats) will be served.

    Suggested donation: $1/person; maximum $5/family

    Family Ministry

Summer Family Nights: Each month this

summer we will be offering a time for families

to gather for a meal, short, simple and fun large-group

activity facilitated by Patty, followed by family time,

with materials for suggested self-guided family activities

and discussions provided. Rather than being a big

event, this is a perfect opportunity to take a “time-out”

from busy summer schedules and get in touch with oth-

er family members in a relaxed and meaningful way.

Everyone is welcome. You are a family whether you are

young, old, a couple or single; whether you are parents,

grandparents, or without children. Take time to connect

in Christ, whatever your family situation.

    6:00-7:30: Tuesday, July 23

    Thursday, August 22

Please contact Patty if you have questions.

  • ASLC Quilters

    No experience needed! If you—

have hands you are qualified. The

    “regular” quilters could use your

help. There are about 15 older

women who are looking for some

fresh hands to help on quilting days. There are many

different jobs that go into making the quilts: tying on

the yarn ties, pinning the edges, and finally sewing the

pieces together. Besides making the quilts, we each

bring a bag lunch to have after we quilt.

We meet the 3rd Tuesday of the month, from 9:00 -

1:00-ish. The next time is Tuesday, July 16th. This is such

a great ministry we have here at Abiding Savior. We

would love to have you join us. Bring a friend, too.

If you have any questions, please call

    Gretchen Hanson at 763-784-5181.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in

helping at the sale. Thank you Fern Fischer for doing

all the purchasing and operating of the coffee shop.

Special thanks to all who helped set up the sale as

that is the hardest part. We had boxes, bags and suit-

cases full of stuff and who knew where to put it all. As

of the writing of this report we have raised over $3,2000

from the rummage sale. I understand this is the most

we’ve ever made at a rummage sale. But, we are not

done yet. June 27, 28, 29 Doris Wilson will continue on

with the sale in Luck, WI at her farm. I pray for good

weather for her as it may be outside. A special thanks

to Doris for continuing the sale at her home and to

Gloria Peterson who will be at Doris’ side to help her.

God’s blessings to all of you, Gean Meyers

Dear Scholarship Committee, friends and family of

    Abiding Savior:

I would like to express my thanks and appreciation for

having been chosen for the Abiding Savior Holmberg

Memorial Scholarship. I feel blessed to have the sup-

port of my parents and the congregation as I continue

    my education. - Nicholus Colombo

Thank you to all who took the time to fill out the surveys

on the Library and Forums. You remarks and sugges-

tions are very much appreciated and will guide us as

    we proceed with planning.

    - Adult Education Committee

Thank you for all your prayers, cards, calls and visits. I

am so blessed to have such caring and loving friends

    at Abiding Savior.

    God’s Blessings, Ellen Simonson

Thank you for letting LEAFS use your wonderful facilities

for our spring LEAFS series. - Vynnette Perkins

Thank you, Thank you Gloria Peterson for bringing in

your sewing machine and mending all the choir robes.

We really appreciated the time you’ve taken to do

this. Blessings to you, Ageless Voices

Thank you for inviting us to sing at Abiding Savior

Church. We had a great time and hope you enjoyed

it too. Thank you also for the great luncheon you pro-

vided and served all of us. Our fellowship with your

people was wonderful and so much fun!

    Sharing and Caring Hands

evening meal at Sharing and Caring Hands

is Thursday, July 18th. Please meet at ASLC

at 2:45 pm (you don’t need to drive) and

arrive back by 5:30 or sooner.

It is a blessing to serve God’s children.
