Jungle Jack HannaCONTINUED FROM COVER

Emeritus at the Columbus Zoo, is known to most by his award-winning television series Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, and more recent Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild. He has made television appearances on Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Ellen and the Fox News Channel, to name a few. Most recently, Hanna and his family have been stationed in Rwanda*, where they are fi lming 10 episodes of Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild. These episodes hold a distinct uniqueness among the others because they are tracking animals such as the mountain gorilla, rhinoceros, leopard, white lion and cheetah on foot, rather than in a vehicle. “The work I do in Rwanda is very important to me. The threat of endangerment to the mountain gorilla is a growing problem, and these current episodes highlight them. There are only about 620 mountain gorillas left, total. They are found in the high elevations of Rwanda, anywhere between 10 and 12,000 feet,” says Hanna. “I try to tell folks that what happens to our water, trees, air and other resources will eventually happen to our animals, then humans. The best thing people can do to help animals is to take care of our resources, which in turn will take care of our animals, and in the end, will take care of us,” says Hanna.

Jungle Jack reinforces that the current generation of kids are doing a great job at trying to change the planet. “We were baby-boomers, and we didn’t know any better,” he says, “younger kids this day-in-age have the education to make a change in trends.” “Human overpopulation causes our problems with animals and the rest of the world, yet we are still increasing in numbers - we cannot allow this to happen anymore. The Earth is not limitless. There is really only so much we can do to protect it, no matter what is invented or what we come up with next,” he states. Hanna’s devotion to animals began at a young age. “We had a vet, Dr. Roberts, who came to check out the animals at my father’s farm. He lived about 10 to 12 miles away, and I began cleaning cages and cement fl oors for him. After the fi rst year, he paid me ten dollars a week,” says Hanna. “I’ll never forget that fi rst ten dollars, which was a lot, back then.” Cleaning cages earned Hanna a spot traveling from zoo to zoo with Dr. Roberts treating animals. It was then he decided he wanted to be a zookeeper. His love for animals followed him to college, where he says he was arrested for having ducks in his dorm room and a donkey in the shed behind his fraternity house!

Animal arrests aside, Hannamet his wife Suzi in college, which he says is a major part ofhis life. “She has been through itall with me. The only time she’sever said ‘no’ to me was whenI asked her to breastfeed a sickchimpanzee,” says a chucklingHanna. After college, Hannacontinued to follow his dreamsof being a zookeeper, and ishighly accredited for the workhe has done at the ColumbusZoo throughout his lifetime. “I’ve been doing these showsfor over 30 years for non-profi torganizations, cancer centersand places of the like. It getsme into the public to see whatpeople want and what theirconcerns for our resourcesare. I like being involved indifferent realms of life, and Ienjoy this job because I enjoypeople,” says Hanna. downtown Jamestown. Tickets for all the events and activities can be found on the website at http://lucy-desi.com/, according to Corry Curtis. “Our premier headliner this year is actually going to be a one-woman show” by actress Suzanne LaRusch. It’s called “An Evening with Lucille Ball, Thank You for Asking.” The play is directed by Lucie Arnaz and has been performed throughout the country. According to Curtis, “We thought this would be the perfect place to do it, in Lucy’s hometown.” It will be performed Saturday May 29th at the Reg Lenna Civic Center, at 7:30 p.m. There will be many other things to do that weekend. “There will be street activities with vendors and photo ops. We (also) run three Tropicana Dinner Theaters.” There will be two impressionists, one performing as Lucy, and the other portraying Desi Ricardo. Visitors will also fi nd what organizers call

“Komedy Kollege,” which is a portion of an I Love Lucy episode. Participants can sign up “and actually act that out.” There will also be luncheons, a picnic, and opening and closing ceremonies. “There’s just a whole host of things going on.” The celebration of Lucy’s hometown roots has shifted and changed over the years. Curtis says they’re trying to get back to the original intent. The Fan Appreciation Weekend is “very much about” everything Lucy and the I Love Lucy television show. Later this year there will also be an event in August which will feature new comediennes, “getting back into the heart” of the organization’s purpose. Expect no shortage of fans in May. “We have a fairly loyal fan base” with perhaps 800 to 1200 people visiting Jamestown. As for the weather, certain events could be affected by rain since they are held outdoors. These include “Komedy Kollege” and a free event called “Lucy under

the Stars,” where there will be screenings of the television show. “But other than that, every event has a location where (weather) is not an issue.” Curtis said that for the Saturday headliner, people will be able to purchase tickets at a discount price of $15 a ticket if they buy a minimum of twenty tickets. “There’s also a package for tour groups who are providers. You get to go through the museums, the show, and dinner.” The special rates also apply to any business that purchases a minimum of twenty tickets. Did Lucy have a warm spot in her heart for her hometown? Curtis believes she did, noting that Lucy furnished her California home with Crawford Furniture. And she’d have a loaf of Swedish rye bread sent to her from Jones Bakery on a regular basis. The bakery has been reopened across the street from the original location “in what used to be our museum location.”

fright trains. A teacher pointed out to him that this was not the greatest career path, so he turned to metal sculpture instead. As he got older he attended art school and worked in a variety of fast food restaurants. His fi rst job in a serious restaurant was Savannah restaurant in Baltimore. He was hired to cook corn bread and biscuits, and the pastry chef taught him to make French pastries, sorbets and cakes. He attended chef school in California, training primarily in pastry. Mornings he worked at the world famous French Laundry and attended classes in the afternoon. After

graduation he had a couple of jobs as pastry chef; fi rst in Vail and then Washington DC. Eventually he decided to open his own cake business and Charm City Cakes was born. For those of you not familiar with the Food Network show, it presents Duff and his staff producing some pretty amazing sculpted cakes for their clients. Since its founding …soihadto… has gone from playing small gigs to “bigger clubs and venues with 400 seats,” Honus tells me. The production staff for the show works around the bands regular Tuesday night rehearsals. There

seems to be no problem with having a TV personality in the group, the only complaint I heard from them was, “Duff smells like cake.” Down the road Honus tells me they would like to do a tour of the West coast, and are in talks with a production company about that. They also intend to do more recording and their music is available through Borders and other indi record labels. More information and mp3’s of soihadto’s music can be found on their MySpace page: myspace.com/soihadto. For tickets and information on their concert go to jamestownarena.com.
