The Tanglin Club

Dear Members,

It would be timely to provide an update on the various developments taking place at the Club.

The renovations of the Wheelhouse and the main swimming pool were completed on schedule last November. As to be expected, there were some teething problems, one of which was the acoustics in the Wheelhouse. This problem has since been rectified and further remedial measures will be undertaken if necessary.

Members may wish to note that the furniture in the Reading Room has been spruced up.

However, the renovation of the

Children’s Play Area, including the Swimming Pool, has been delayed by about a month due to the need to comply with some regulatory matters. It will now open in mid-March.

The refurbishment of the Club’s 16 guestrooms, approval of which was obtained from the Club’s Membership at a Special General Meeting held on 15 November 2010, will start in March 2011 and will take approximately three months to complete.

When completed, these rooms would be comparable to a good four-star if not a five-star hotel’s guestrooms.

As for the renovation of the Churchill Room, including possibly the reception and the balcony areas, we will seek Members’ approval at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in April.

Members may have noticed that the menus of the Club’s main Food & Beverage (F&B) outlets have been revamped to include a good array of Members’ favourite dishes as well as the introduction of new ones. The growing concern of the F&B Department is the increasing costs of raw materials, ranging from meat and vegetables

to spices. However, the Club has managed to keep the price of dining at these outlets “affordable”.

The usage of the Club’s Sports & Recreation facilities, especially the exercise machines in the gym, is growing. This is indeed encouraging, as Members are becoming more health conscious.

On that note, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Chinese Members a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

www.tanglinclub.org.sg

Dear Members,

We hope you will have time to join us for the traditional Lion Dance performance at the Club to usher in the Year of the Rabbit. It will be held on Thursday, 3 February, starting at 11.45am.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2011 is the Year of the Golden Rabbit, which begins on 3 February and ends on 22 January 2012.

The Rabbit is a lucky sign and according to the Chinese, the Year of the Rabbit will allow you to catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation, but don't try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail. To gain the greatest benefits this year, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy and your relationships.

Hopefully, after a volatile Year of the Tiger, we will see a calmer Year of the Rabbit.

From Food & Beverage, to entertainment, to Sports & Recreation, we have lined up a long list of exciting activities this month to cater to our diverse Membership.

Members will find the details in this issue of the Magazine as well

as on our Website and Club notice boards. Please note on page 4 the Club operation hours during the Chinese New Year period, as certain facilities will be closing earlier than usual.

We will also hold our annual Staff Dinner & Dance on Tuesday, 15 February to thank our Staff for their tireless work and commitment throughout the year and their great contributions to the success of The Tanglin Club. On that day, all Club facilities will close at 3pm to allow Staff time to prepare for their big night and we thank our Members for their kind understanding.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the Wheelhouse & Pool project shall be completed by mid-March and we will commence our Guestroom renovations on 1 March. This will again create some noise and disruptions especially on Level 2 of the main building, and particularly during the first two weeks of the improvement works. We apologise for the inconvenience and will spare no effort to minimise the disruptions.

In our ongoing efforts to improve the IT facilities of our Club, we have also started the RFID tagging of books and DVD’s in both Libraries. The work is expected to

be completed soon. This tagging will ease the workload of our Staff and make tracing of outstanding books easier. It will also be linked to our Accounts system.

Until my next message, I wish our Chinese Members Gong Xi Fa Cai (Greetings for a Prosperous New Year), good health and happiness in the Year of the Rabbit.

With warm regards,Herbert HoferGeneral ManagerThe Tanglin Club

IMPRESSIONS OF AN ARTISTMrs Rupa Natarajan is a woman of many titles: a Club Member for the past 22 years, loving wife, doting mother, tireless volunteer of the Library Sub-Committee, and accomplished artist as The Tanglin Club Magazine discovers.

Rupa’s career as an artist spans 35 years and she has sought to innovate her craft

and push the boundaries of her artistic capabilities.

Born in Varanasi, Rupa was initially trained by leading Indian watercolour artist Robin Mukherjee. She was only one of three female applicants to be accepted by the Government College of Art in Calcutta, and she studied under notable Indian artists Satyen Ghoshal, Gopal Gosh, Chintamoni Kar and Rathin Mitra.

She also spent two years at the New York School of Interior Design.

Apart from watercolours, Rupa's works include oil paintings and stained glass images.

Her talent is recognised and appreciated by patrons around the world and she has exhibited in the

Pasricha Gallery in London, the Art Encounter Gallery in Las Vegas, and in the Agora Gallery in New York.

Rupa, who now resides in Singapore, has had over six exhibitions here.

Her works focus on the shapes and patterns of people’s faces, gestures, movements and emotions. She also captures the raw and natural beauty of African and Indian landscape, the magnificence of wildlife, and attempts to recreate that synergy through the use of line and texture.

Her oil paintings are an inspired vision in a kaleidoscope of colours and strokes, culminating in a breath-taking piece that conveys not only the natural element of her subjects, but also her feelings about them.

Rupa dedicates her time and effort in supporting and promoting the

appreciation of art. As a member of the governing committee in promoting the arts in Singapore, she was instrumental in setting up art schools with well-qualified teachers and instructors. She also lends her support to various exhibitions.

From 7 to 13 February, Rupa will be staging an exhibition titled: Africa, Where Nature Dances – An Artist’s Journey, in the Gallery at The Arts House (formerly the Old Parliament House). The exhibition, which opens between 10am and 8pm presents her works from her tours in the African continent. Admission is free.

For more information on Rupa and her works, please visit www.rupanatarajan.com

Wild Jungle Safari31 December at the Wheelhouse"I wish to say a BIG thank you to everyone at The Tanglin Club for a wonderful Wild Jungle Safari party on New Year's Eve.

We joined the Club recently. We are glad we did because the event was a great one for families (I hate leaving the children behind on New Years Eve)!

The staff were very warm and attentive, the buffet had many delicious choices and the DJ and host kicked off the evening well and ended the party with a bang. It was definitely one of the more memorable New Year events we’ve attended recently. Please convey our thanks to everyone who had a part in making the event really memorable and great." – Deepanjali Pandey

ChristmasDay Lunch25 December at the Churchill Room

“Christmas Day lunch at the Churchill Room was a lovely occasion. The mood was set by the warm welcome from the staff and the gentle tinkling on the piano. The traditional menu, with delicious and comforting food, was the highlight. Having wholesome entertainment for the children was a good idea, and the appearance of Father Christmas was, of course, a highlight for them.

Throughout, the Staff displayed good festive cheer, even though they were so busy, and thanks are due to all who helped make Christmas Day so special.”

The Annual Marathon followed by the Christmas dinner was well attended and there were some 40 Members and Guests.

After some five hours of intense competition, the following were winners in their respective sections.• Most number of consecutive wins: Nawaz Mumtaz Akhtar• Most number of wins: Cheung Yew Tak• Highest breaks: Neville Tindale

Wednesday’s Free CoachingIt is conducted by Mr Lim Kah Ho. If you would like to take private lessons, please contact the Sports & Recreation reception for more details.

Balut is a game played by two or more players, the optimum being five, using five dice.

Each player in turn shakes the dice, numbered one to six, using a leather box, and throws them onto a pad or flat surface.

Each player has up to three throws in each round and may put out any number of dice after either of the first throws, or puts back any or all in the box before the next throw. The objective is to secure the best possible combination of the dice for scoring the most points.

Each player should start out attempting the high scores of Balut (five of a kind), Low & High Straight (a run) or Full House (two of one number,

three of another). If he fails in this, he can then enter his score either under Fours, Fives or Sixes, depending on the extent of the

failure, but he must have had one of that number among the dice.

Any score over, say 22, is not a bad “Choice”, but beginners are advised to keep “Choice” open for as long as possible. It does help in the long run! Any failure to achieve Balut or a Straight when every other section is completed results in “Scrubbing” one or the other.

Some prefer to scrub Straight, others Balut. That is really a personal preference. Balut always scores 30, regardless of which dice. Straights are the sum of the dice – 15 or 20.

The aim is to score as many points as possible by the end of the game – the maximum under these rules being 183.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHLast year’s Christmas Lunch on 1 December was a complete sell-out!

A total of 75 Members and Guests streamed into the Raffles Room all decked in red, green or white.

Carols were sung to the accompaniment of a keyboard played by a Guest, Elaine Sim. No doubt the singing was more melodious.

A Christmas trivia compiled by Rohini Arya was enjoyed by all. Answers such as Santa’s Chinese name, which is Lam Khoong, and the bowl of porridge left in the attic was for his wife and not his reindeer, were wild guesses for some.

The turkey, ham and Christmas pudding scored top marks and with a glass of wine as well, the players

were either relaxed or emboldened to “do or die” in their contract bids in the games that followed.Prizes were presented for the following:• 2010 Winner for Monday and Friday games: Rohini Arya• 2010 Winner for Wednesday games: Tara Maniar

Congratulations to Rohini for also winning the Overall Club Champion title for 2010!

Thanks to all for supporting this event and to the Food & Beverage Team for the smart presentation of our Christmas lunch.

Er-mei Chuan Yun Taiji Umbrella Course Every Saturday starting 12 February, 10am to 11amAt the end of the Ming Dynasty, a vagabond who lived in Sichuan province proclaimed himself king, brutally killed many people, and ordered all weapons to be destroyed. As a result, the people became defenceless.

A priestess by the name of Chuan Yun from Er-mei Mountain developed umbrella fighting techniques as a weapon for self-defence. She taught and passed down the umbrella techniques for self-defence and also to benefit the health of practitioners.

The movements are as graceful as tai qi and the technique was named Er-mei Chuan Yun Taiji Umbrella.

Dayan qigong Wild Goose Breathing ExerciseEvery Saturday starting 12 February, 11.30am to 12.30pm Dayan Qigong, which literally means Wild Goose Breathing Exercise, is a set of highly restorative exercise handed down through the ages among exclusive circles of the Kunlun School.

Imitating the postures and movements of the wild goose and assimilating the ancient daoyin calisthenics methods, it consists of vigorous and gentle movements, where motion is alternated with stillness.

By stimulating a strong sensation of qi (energy flow), channels and acu-points, it is effective in preventing and curing diseases, strengthening the inner vital energy, avoiding premature ageing and extending life.

Dayan Qigong helps to promote blood circulation and clear jingmai, the passages through which vital energy flow. It is also therapy to train the body and mind, reduce stress and anxiety while improving overall physical fitness, balance and flexibility. It is particularly good for ailments such as hypertension and hypotension, heart diseases, insomnia, functional disorder of autonomic nerves, gastrointestinal problems, rheumatoid arthritis and skin diseases.

MOVING AT THE RIGHT PLACES Do you always feel that dull ache in the lower back right after a day of Golf or a Tennis game?

If you find it hard to generate power in your strokes, it could well be a technique issue or it may be you are moving at the wrong places: your joints.

Try the following test to determine if you lack mobility in the thoracic (upper back) area and hip internal rotation.

Thoracic Spine Rotation Range of Motion Test

Assume a seated position with the arms crossed across the chest, holding a dowel evenly across the chest.

Keep both feet pointing front and place a small ball or rolled towel between the knees. Keeping the spine tall, turn your shoulders to the right as far as possible while keeping your weight even on both hips. Note how far you are able to rotate. Repeat on the other side.

Ideally, you would want to be able to rotate approximately 60° based on the position of the stick as you turn. It is extremely important that

you are able to disassociate your upper body from your lower body, as this will allow the lower body to stabilise laterally while rotating your shoulders.

It is not uncommon to see that when someone is limited in their thoracic mobility, they will compensate by rotating the lumbar spine (lower back) to get the needed range of motion in rotation. The problem, however, is that the lumbar spine is not meant to rotate that much: thus, the soreness and pain experienced when we use it this way.

Supine Hip Internal Rotation Test

Lying on your back, bend the hips and knees to create a 90° angle at both joints.

Place your fists side-by-side and squeeze them in between your knees. Keep your knees against your fists as you try and move your legs outward.

Proper range of motion would be at least 30° (from the knee outward) of internal rotation on both legs.

This is the same motion that occurs in the hip joint during a good swing. The golfer rotates around the right hip, shifts his weight, then rotates back around the left hip.

Lack of internal hip rotation can cause lower back pain as well as knee and ankle issues. The hip joint needs to have good mobility as well as stability, having to withstand both direct loading stresses and large rotational forces in sports that involve pivoting or twisting movements.

If you find yourself not having the optimum range of motion in both tests, try including the following drills in your warm-up and workout and do a retest after a couple of weeks to see if there are any improvements.

Side Lying Thoracic Extension and Rotation

While lying on your side, flex the top hip about 90° and support the knee with a foam roll or medicine ball, if needed.

Keep the foot on the ground and support the head with a rolled towel. Begin rotating your top shoulder toward the floor. Maintain contact with the foam roll, ball or floor as you rotate.

When you are rotated to the maximum, reach your arm out at approximately 45° from the body, with the opposite arm reaching toward the ceiling.

Swissball Hip internal Rotation

Lie on a Swissball with the mid-back resting on it. Keep feet pointing forward and shoulder width apart. Drive knees together, going into hip internal rotation. Integrate the upper body and the lower body in a single movement.

Forward Lunge with Rotation

Start by taking a large step forward and get into a lunge position (front knee over the front ankle and back heel up off the ground).

If you stepped forward with your right foot, place your right hand down on the ground next to your right foot for support. Next, take your left hand and reach it over head. Repeat on the other side.

Trainer Profile

Colin Chua I started my career at The Tanglin Club in May 2009 as a part-time gym instructor. Having been in the fitness industry since 2004, I’ve taken my interest to greater heights, constantly learning and updating myself.

My philosophy in life is simple. I believe that when we set out to achieve something, doing it right with perseverance and commitment will lead to success. I also believe that as long as we enjoy what we are doing we will do our best.

My view about training is to find ways to enjoy the workout and do it right!

Taking the first step to start improving your health and fitness might not be a challenge for most of us, but being committed is. Still, you must give yourself and your body the opportunity to improve your health and fitness. Don't procrastinate. Start working on your goals now!

I look forward to my role as a full-time Personal Trainer and I will do my best to help you achieve your goals. I truly enjoy what I do and you can count on my effort 100%!

Deep Water RunningEvery Tuesday & Thursday, 8.30am to 9.30am at the Swimming Pool. Deep Water Running is a fantastic strength and cardiovascular workout, an excellent form of active recovery, a great way to rehabilitate an injury and a fun alternative to your regular workout routine.

All you do is strap on a flotation belt, slip into the water and run to great music and innovative training programmes. Water running uses the buoyancy of the water without any of the pounding inflicted on the joints of the legs and back usually associated with running on land.

At the same time, the resistance of the water as you pump your arms and legs helps you strengthen your muscles and joints.

The Year Ends in JanuaryFor some reason best known to the "Forty Good Men" who founded The Tanglin Club, our financial year ends in January, so it’s time to reflect, pat ourselves on the back, spend the remainder of the Club Budget, elect a new Committee and set out the plan for the coming 12 months.

The Year in NumbersIn 2010, the Members of our 315-strong Section swung their clubs 46,000 times while buggying 2,500 km (Singapore to Hong Kong!) along 8,500 holes to play 470 rounds of golf in 15 matches over 12 months with 14 clubs, against 10 clubs at nine courses, and spent $118,000.

The Year in CoursesWe played Kelab Golf Kuching, Keppel, Marina Bay, Orchid, Raffles, SAFRA, Sarawak Club, Seletar, Singapore Island Country Club, Tanah Merah against ourselves and The American Club, Changi Beach Club, Chinese Swimming Club, Hong Kong Club, Serangoon Gardens, Singapore Cricket Club, Singapore Swimming Club and Singapore Recreation Club.

The Year in ActivitiesTwo majors matches, The Captains Cup for 94 players, The Barclays Annual Championship for 123 players, a Kids programme, a night game, $5,000 worth of prizes, a Sunday game, a ride through town on an open-top bus and a very happy sponsor.

The Committee Next YearBoth the Convenor and Captain have agreed to stand for election in the Golf Section Sub-Committee (GSSC) for 2011 as have several others in the existing Committee, plus Fred Kloppers has agreed to stand to run the Inter-Club tournament. However, we do need new candidates to step forward.

This Year’s First EventCome along to our first-ever non-playing event: a Golf Trivia Quiz evening this month. We’ll piggyback the event with our AGM to let GSSC Members approve the accounts for 2010 and elect the incoming Committee.

Last Year’s Last EventThe Christmas Bash was a huge success – sunrise golf, five Clubs, open-top bus, mulled wine, Christmas lunch, free flow of drinks, a gift from Father Christmas and, this year, peace on earth and goodwill to all.

Last Few Words2010 was a huge success due to the efforts of many: your participation, the GSSC Committee, the Club’s S&R and F&B Teams and our sponsor, Barclays Capital. On behalf of all to all, a big thank you and see you on the tee in 2011.

Last But Not LeastCongratulations to our Captain S T Yeo for being appointed Lady Captain at Raffles Country Club; and thank you to Cecilia Quintanilla for your support and best wishes for the next stage of your time in Asia when you move to Thailand.

LAWN BOWLS

Kung Hei Fatt Choi to all bowlers, their families and all our readers, especailly those friendly Rabbits, all of whom are destined to have good fortune in the year ahead.

As for the 2+2+2+2 Pairs Final, it proved to be a very competitive match between Chris Claridge/Ted Hartland, the eventual winners, and Richard Coventry/Bob Gattie, who were unable to find the same match-winning form with which they stormed through their semi-final.

Along the way to the finals, very good performances were recorded by many of our less experienced bowlers, who made the competition popular and very successful.

Our bowling year closed on 29 December when the final of the Club Singles Championship was played between the holder, Rodger Kimpton, and last year’s Singles Plate winner, Richard Coventry.

It was an interesting game to say the least. The outcome centred on two crucial ends halfway through the proceedings. After 11 ends, the score stood at seven shots all, which was very good progress for

Richard because in no way was he likely to be regarded other than a long-odds winner. Nevertheless, he demonstrated that he was not overawed by the reputation of his opponent and gave as good ashe got. Good for him! Then disaster struck.

The next two ends cost him seven shots which doubled Rodger’s score, leaving Richard with a great deal of work to do if he was to make up the lost ground.

Concentration, experience and patience became the virtues which were going to lead to victory and both players set about their task with considerable skill.

Fortunately for him, although Rodger conceded some of his advantage, Richard was able hang on to his lead despite a temporary setback which reduced the margin to five shots.

Form was not to be contradicted, however, and in spite of Richard’s valiant attempts, Rodger emerged as winner after 23 ends of play the score being 21 shots to 14.

Congratulations, Rodger, in retaining your title as Club Single’s Champion, and

commiserations to Richard who showed he has the ability to become a future champion.

On 12 December, the now traditional Christmas Bowling Carnival was held when the green was inhabited by numerous bowlers enjoying the sport and, in so doing, building their appetites for the festive celebrationwhich followed.

Devi Hodgkinson, in conjunction with the Food & Beverage Department, had arranged a table furnished with culinary goodies which everyone enjoyed to the full. Rumour has it that some were unable to eat normally for days afterwards, having consumed so much sumptuous food that appetites were dulled and exercise routines abandoned. Well done, Devi!

The year ahead promises to bring plenty of bowling activity. Make sure you take part by enjoying our green and the companionship it provides. Hope to see you soon.

SCUBA

In mid-December, The Tanglin Club's Scuba Section and sister British Sub-Aqua Club Branch Blue Barracuda went on a weekend dive trip on board the MV Mata Ikan to the Riau Islands, Indonesia, just south of Singapore. The islands offer sheltered diving during the current monsoon season.

These pristine waters are mainly known to a small number of local villagers and fishermen, and this gave us a unique opportunity to visit dive sites otherwise seldom seen by any visitors.

SQUASH

The Kimpton Cup is our annual internal Jumbo Doubles tournament for Club Members. It has run every year since the first Doubles Court was completed in 1999.

The finals of last year's tournament were played on 11 December. The eponymous Rodger Kimpton, now Lawn Bowls Convenor, helped present the prizes. The winning team was the established pairing of Paul Isted and Shane Hagan. Two of our other top players, Marc Nicholson and Al Aspen, were runners-up.

The Plate winners were doubles veteran and former-President Alan Jones partnering Sam Alexander, a relative newcomer to the doubles game. Plate runners-up were the seasoned pairing of Peter Rogers and Zoher Motiwalla.

This was a busy afternoon and the December Birthday Bash took place after the finals. Evergreen squash veteran "Nippy Norman" Wee did the honours and cut the cake.

To round off the day, Glenn Bryce invited many Squash friends to his House Warming extravaganza. All in all a busy day for the Squash Section!

YEAR-END FUNOn 20 December, the Monday before Christmas, Esther Ling organised a friendly tournament for the Morning Ladies Tennis Group.

It was so nice to see such a good turnout from all our regular players, who formed two teams captained by Helen Crewdson and Marion White.

We tried to arrange the matches to make the pairings as well-balanced as possible. There were many very close games, but Marion’s team eventually won by a narrow margin. It was a really enjoyable morning of Tennis followed by a lovely festive lunch.

We would all like to thank Esther, the Tennis Committee, Alan Tan and the Food & Beverage staff for their hard work and support.

KEEPING IT FRIENDLYOn 11 December, we hosted another very friendly tennis match with the Chinese Swimming Club (CSC). Mr Koh Chee Hua, CSC Captain, arrived with his Team Members promptly at 3.45pm for our 4pm start.

Unfortunately, it seemed as though someone had pushed the “RAIN” button and it began to pour!

When everyone’s spirits were “dampened” it was as if someone pushed the “SUNSHINE” button

and with a gallant roller effort, the courts were dried and matches resumed within the hour.

On behalf of the Tennis Committee, thank you Tennis Section Members who participated in this event. It’s with your support that we continue to host and be hosted by a variety of prestigious tennis clubs in Singapore and abroad.

Please watch for our next friendly, scheduled with the Singapore Island Country Club.

HONG KONG TENNIS TOURThe Tanglin Club organised a tennis tour to Hong Kong before Christmas.

We had a very enjoyable time competing against the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) and The Tanglin Club won 9-2. We also played against the Ladies Recreational Club (LRC), which The Tanglin Club also won 9-4.

The strong team of Dave Ng, Vincent Lam, Roland Tan, Maddie

Noda, Cecilia Rasmussen and Tricia Tan performed strongly and dominated most of the matches.

The trip was especially enjoyable because of the cool 18°C to 20°C Hong Kong weather and the sumptuous food buffet and drinks provided by both host clubs for all the players and their families.

We had excellent curry chicken masala, Hong Kong dry beef ho fun and sweet and sour seafood, all washed down with plenty of beers and healthy lemongrass tea at the HKFC. This was followed by an "extended" night out at Lan

Kwai Fong sampling cocktails and the outstanding local nightlife. The next day, we all got up in time for more tennis and a delicious variety of Hong Kong dim sum for lunch provided by LRC. Our players even stayed on for a further three hours of tennis after the official match!

A tennis trip to Bali is planned for early-2011. Interested members should inform the Tennis Captain or the Sports & Recreation Department.

HARNESSING STAR POWERIn January, The Tanglin Club's Director of Tennis, Ken Smith, was invited to the Mubadala World Tennis Championships to conduct clinics for the tournament's sponsors and for leading juniors of the UAE. Smith was tasked with organising groups for one-hour clinics in association with some of the world's leading tennis players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marcos Baghdatis.

"It was good fun to be out on court working with all the players. They were a great bunch of guys and very accommodating to all of the participants during the clinics... but Federer was in a class of his own," Smith said.

"He (Federer) is a very funny guy, and a joker on court...far different from the serious guy you see playing. He made every one of the participants feel as if they were his best friend. It was great to see and to be a part of the event and I was happy to help out, as everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time with the stars."

Holiday CampsSeems like Christmas was only yesterday, but the school holidays will soon be upon us. The Club will be holding a Junior Tennis Camp from March 14 to March 18 from 9am to 11am and is open to all ages. Information and registration forms are available at the Sports & Recreation Complex Lobby and the Tennis Office, or call Mayling on 96654435.

WELLNESS

The Tanglin Club38

Seventy percent of longevity is lifestyle-related and therefore controllable; the remaining 30 percent is controlled by our genes. To deter the ageing process, we need to follow five key pathways:1. Balanced diet2. Precision exercise3. Optimal nutritional supplementation4. Natural hormone enhancements, and,5. Stress reduction

Keep to a balanced diet• Avoid carbohydrate from sugar, grains and storage root sources. This is aimed at minimising insulin over-stimulation.• Eat only when you are hungry, and consume multiple small meals.• Avoid eating under mental or emotional stress when your body has excessive stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

• Aim for an ideal body weight; an even better aim is to maintain an anti-ageing weight which is 5 to 10 percent less than your ideal weight.

Do precision exercise, namely: • Flexibility training for our joints.• Cardiovascular training for our heart.• Strength training for our muscles.• Balancing training for our joint propioreceptors. A propioreceptor is a sensory receptor, found chiefly in muscles, tendons, joints, and the inner ear, that detects the motion or position of the body.

Take proper supplementsSupplementation should be in a cocktail type formulation consisting of vitamins, minerals, herbs, nutritional factors, enzymes, and antioxidants that will work synergistically with each other. It’s best to ask your doctor about these supplements.

Manage anti-ageing with natural hormone enhancement• Keep your insulin level low by maintaining low carbohydrate intake. This will prevent lifestyle-related Type 2 Diabetes.• Women need to balance the estrogen (sometimes called the female hormone) to progesterone (male hormone) ratio during the perimenopausal period to help prevent estrogen-sensitive cancer such as breast cancer.• Men need to reduce endogenous (growing from within) estrogen to lower their risk of prostate cancer.

Reduce stress • Mental stress: Read, listen to music, meditate, sing, sleep well, etc.• Physical stress: Practise relaxing pursuits such as qigong, walking, swimming, yoga, etc.• Functional stress: Go for massage and spa treatments

Article contributed by Spa Botanica, which also offers relaxing treatments that help delay ageing.
