My Fellow Members

On 25/4/11, the Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) approved a resolution, by 268 to 176 votes (“Resolution”), which authorised the GC to spend up to $2.8 million to renovate the Churchill Room, Main Entrance, Lobby and Restrooms (“Renovations”). Sketches or per-spectives (“Perspectives”) on the Renovations were exhibited at the AGM.

During the debate which preced-ed the vote on the Resolution, some Members opposed the Renovations as wasteful and/or that the Perspectives were tacky, modernistic or garish. Others felt that the Renovations were long overdue.

I said that it was unnecessary for the Club to try to look like a 5-star hotel. In any case, the Renovations must be sensitive to our history and traditions.

Following the AGM, about 70 Members attended a Dialogue on 10/5/11 (“Dialogue”), to discuss “the details concerning the renovation”.

At the start of the Dialogue, Ian Lander rose on a point of order. He said that the Resolution was defective and that the Club had no authority to spend $2.8 million on the Renovations. I reminded Ian that he had corresponded with the Club before the AGM and that the Club’s position throughout was that the pro-posed resolution under Rule 4(v) was valid. Ian agreed to “suspend” his

point of order to allow the Dialogue to proceed. As a postscript, I would add that having read the transcript of the AGM, it was clear that the Chair had expressly ruled that the proposed res-olution under Rule 4(v) was in order.

About 10 Members spoke at the Dialogue. The overwhelming view was that the GC had to be sensitive to the “historic” and “iconic” architecture of the Club and that there were features like the balustrades and chandeliers in the Lobby which should be preserved. Some felt that the Perspectives were ill-conceived. There were concerns that the Renovations might result in increased Members’ subscriptions.

After the Dialogue, Richard Tan, the Development and Property Convenor in the 2010/2011 GC, took GC members to the Churchill Room, Main Entrance and Lobby to show the inefficiencies and state of disrepair of the three areas. He explained how the proposed works as envisaged in the Perspectives (which included a handi-capped toilet) will enhance Members’ enjoyment of the Club. The guided tour was particularly useful and infor-mative for Patrick Kwek, Ronnie Lim and myself, who were not members of the 2010/2011 GC.

The GC met on 26/5/11 to discuss the Renovations. Whilst respecting the views of Members at the Dialogue, we were mindful that the AGM had approved $2.8 million for the Renovations. The GC will proceed as mandated, and when finalised, the drawings and plans (which will

incorporate some of the suggestions from Members), work schedules and the contract for the Renovations will be displayed in the Lobby for Members’ information.

As a result of the Renovations, some items of Club furniture and fit-tings will be surplus to requirements. It is intended that these items be sold to Members keen to acquire a piece of Club history.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Page 5: The Tanglin Club Magazine: June 2011

www.tanglinclub.org.sg 3

Dear Members,

The Children’s Area and the Pool were officially opened when the Family Poolside Carnival was held on 21 May.

The place was buzzing with activity on that day and based on the feedback from parents and our younger Members, the new facilities are a big improvement and are proving to be very popular.

In the past Children did not want to come to the Club, now they don’t want to go home!

The same can be said of our renovated guestrooms. From the very first day after the renovation was completed, we have been running about 90% occupancy and the rooms have been very well received.

We have also installed new and clearer signage for guest parking at our car parks and kindly ask Members to assist in reminding their Guests to park only at the main Clubhouse open decks to ensure Members have sufficient covered car park lots.

Secu r i t y w i l l whee l - c l amp

unauthorised parked vehicles in the covered car park lots.

On the same note, we also like to remind Members to adhere to the “no helper” bye-law at the Club as there has been feedback of non-compliance.

On the Food & Beverage front, the white asparagus promotions at Tavern and the Churchill Room have been very popular and we have been ordering 200kg every week.

We have lined up interesting food promotions to offer Members more variety in the coming months. In June we will feature an Australian seafood promotion, and we will feature a French menu to complement our regular items in July during the Tour de France.

We will also be unveiling two new promotions at Wheelhouse.

The first is Sunday Roast, which features a healthy Salad Bar, which will provide a less-guilty option for Members, roasted items such as Roast Beef, Sautéd Vegetables and Oven-Roasted Potatoes. The second is a Poolside BBQ, which

will be offered every last Friday of the month.

We thank you for your support, patronage and participation in our activities and look forward to your feedback to further improve the services of the Club.

With warm regards,

Herbert HoferGeneral ManagerThe Tanglin Club

THE NEW GUESTROOMS

We cannot remember how many times we have stayed at The Tanglin Club since we moved abroad, but we

will definitely remember our recent stay very well.

The renovated guestroom is tasteful, lighter and brighter. The newly tiled balcony is inviting and we were encouraged to look out. The room card system is also efficient. But most importantly, the staff were extremely charming.

Thank you, Mr Hofer and your staff, for the excellent care. We will come back again.

Staying in the newly refurbished guestrooms and being around for Annual General Meeting was exciting for one trip!

Mother’s Day Weekend 7 & 8 MayLotus Culture set up booths at the Main Lobby and the Wheelhouse Function Room to raise awareness and raise funds to help rebuild the lives of survivors of human trafficking in Cambodia.

Lotus Culture was supported in the fundraising by a designer of exquisitely crafted jewellery and two craft galleries of single edition hand-sewn quilts and finely painted wood decorative pieces.

For the children, there were high-quality soft quilts and costumes (Snow White, Fireman, Tinker Bell , etc.) made in Phnom Penh by Cambodian women.

There was good support for the items on sale and there were many who gave outright donations. Some who stopped by the booths expressed interest to help in other ways.

The board for children to make the Mother’s Day dedications and form a collage was filled up. The dedications show the children’s love and care for their Mothers.

Lotus Culture would like to express sincere thanks to The Tanglin Club, volunteers, the artists/donors and all who participated in touching the lives of others and for spending a fun-filled weekend together.

BALUT & BRIDGE

BalutSocial Evening Debut

If anything can be said of the Friday social evening debut, it would be that the participants celebrated it with mind-blowing high scores. Perhaps the total session score record has been broken and may remain so for some time to come.

Ganesan Sethuraman in the six-set game scored 724 (144, 106, 141, 115,115, and 103).

Sethuraman’s highest column score of 144 of the first game prevailed until the last game when Sapinah Hughes and Vikraman Raman, both playing on the same table along with Fatema Sadiq, overtook the score. Sapinah, who was the first player on the table, scored 154, but this was quickly undone by Vikraman, who was the next player and scored 157. The boisterous display of exhilaration

by Sapinah, Fatema and Vikraman was enjoyed by all around them.

The evening was a high-scoring session judging by the aggregate average score of 562 from six games by the 11 baluteers who were present. The high scorers were: Sethu 724, Sapinah 635, Vikraman 586, Nina 574, and Bansi Sethuraman 557.

Well done!

DARTS

Darts Annual General Meeting

We had a very good turnout at the 29 April Annual General Meeting (AGM) as the event was held between the Annual Darts Tournament and the Section’s Annual Dinner, where we had a total of 44 attendees.

Many Members were will ing to give their time to serve on the Darts Sub-Commit tee and the fol lowing were elected for the 2011/12 term.

• M C Cheong• Frederick Francis (Adviser)• David Goh• Deepa Gupta • Lily Lim • Khor Buck Chye William• Albert Heng• Andrew Simester• Vincent Fong• Esther Ling

We are glad that the new committee comprises members of both sexes as well as a good international mix.

Membership in the Section con-tinues to grow and we have a total of 57 Members. With the good pro-motional programme that is going on, M C is confident that we will be able to get at least 100 Members by the next AGM.

The committee will be meeting soon to draw up the programme for the coming year and we will keep all darters updated.

Annual Darts TournamentThe game is getting more popu-lar and we saw an increase in the number of Members taking part in the tournament. Altogether there were 51 entries for the five events, comprising the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Ladies’ Singles, Ladies’ Doubles & Mixed Doubles

DARTS & BILLIARDS

With the large entries, more time was needed to complete all the events and we had to carry forward the competition to the following Saturday, 7 May.

Competition was very intense and the results could have ended up either way. Most darters lost their game at the final stage where they had to score a double to win the game.

M C claims he was distracted by the many calls from Members wanting to have their drinks and sandwiches, and this made him lose his concen-tration and he ended up losing his game. This is just an excuse. Better luck next year and don’t forget to practise harder.

Nevertheless, those who took part had a very enjoyable time and the fol-lowing were the champions and the runners-up. Men’s SinglesChampion: Frederick FrancisRunner-up: Ng Tiak Soon Men’s Doubles Champions: Andrew Simester/Albert HengRunners-up: Koh Buck Chye William/Ng Tiak Soon Ladies’ SinglesChampion: Lily Lim Runner-up: Evelyn Taylor

Ladies’ Doubles Champions: Carole Kroyer/Deepa Gupta Runners-up: Lily Lim/Sepalika Kumarasinghe The Kroyers who were supposed to have left for the US before the tour-nament, managed to stay back and take part. In doing so, both were handsomely rewarded. Carole part-nered Deepa and they were crowned the Ladies’ Doubles Champions, w h i l e B r u c e p a r t n e r e d L i l y and were crowned the Mixed Doubles Champions.

FITNESS

Teens Fitness Summer CampsWeek one: 31 May, 2, 4, 7, 8 & 11 JuneWeek two: 14, 16, 18, 21, 23 & 25 JuneOne of the healthiest ways for your teen to spend the summer holiday is to engage in physical activity. If you are planning some healthy and energising activity for your 12 to 15 year old, the Gym Team has created fun and comprehensive exercises, recreation and sports-specific training for the camps. Price: $225 for six lessons over two weeks of training.

The Truth about Speed in Sports

In field and court sports, speed is a highly sought-after quality. We often see it as the ability to accelerate, but

that in reality is only part of the equation. The other part is the ability to decelerate.

For a tennis player to be able to sprint to the other end of the court to receive the ball, for example, he must first decelerate or change direction before acceleration takes place.

In the book Athletic Body in Balance, noted physi-cal therapist and strength coach Gray Cook states, “true quickness also includes the ability to stop a movement in a short amount of time”. So, if we wish to improve speed we should not overlook the other half of the equation.

Another important reason to train to decelerate is injury prevention. Deceleration places a lot more stress on your joints and muscles than acceleration. During a match, your body is typically put through hundreds of repetitions of these “stop-and-go” movements and as fatigue kicks in, form and technique tend to deteriorate and risk of injury is greatly increased.

Start working on the following exercises to improve your ability to decelerate and change direction quickly.

Forward Lunge• Start with your feet parallel and hip-width apart, lunge forward on one leg, and step back. Repeat on the other leg.

• Make sure that your weight is evenly distributed throughout the whole foot.

Lateral Lunge• Step to the side and lower hips to the floor by squatting back and down with the lead leg and keeping the back leg straight.

• Return to the starting position by pushing up with the lead leg.

• Change to the other leg and repeat for a prescribed number of repetitions.

Lateral Bound & Stabilisation• Your starting position is standing on one leg.

• Load your hips and arms and bound laterally, landing on opposite foot.

• Hold for three sec-onds and repeat on the other side.

Coaching Keys• Bound for both distance and height, “sticking” the landing. • Land softly by absorbing the impact through your hip and glutes. • Use your arms and hips to generate force during the movement.

GOLF

Hot Competition & Camaraderie The Tanglin Club is one of the seven social clubs com-peting in the 2011 four-match Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament series. On 12 May we were the hosts of the second match of the year, with an afternoon shotgun at Raffles Country Club.

We played System 36 Stableford against six teams of 16 players from six other clubs and came in sixth.

Singapore Cricket Club 293 pointsSingapore Recreation Club 292 pointsSerangoon Garden Country Club 288 pointsSingapore Swimming Club 286 pointsChinese Swimming Club 284 pointsThe Tanglin Club 280 pointsChangi Beach Club 267 points

Our best performance came from Team A players Gerard Fitzgerald and George Filmeridis with 37 and 36 points, and Team B players Chin Siew Gim and Lee How Sheng on 36 and 35. The buayas remained in the cage as the highest scores among the remainder of the field was one at 39, two at 38 and four at 37.

The Tanglin Cub hosted the after-game prize-giving

dinner at Raffles Country Club’s Chinese restaurant. For those of you who missed it, it epitomised why we need to play more matches with our fellow social clubs. The food was great, the company was fantastic, the drinks went down well and the medal winners received much applause.

This was all topped off with our very own Christine Koh making her podium debut, emceeing the evening and keeping 100 or so hungry and thirsty golfers on kitchen passes under control.

If you missed this event, put your name down for the next match at Warren Golf & Country Club in August.

Annual Match vs The British ClubThirty-two players, Thursday afternoon, the rain. We played between one and five holes and Seletar Country Club would not give us even a nine-hole rain check. So we will re-host the re-match in September but not at Seletar as it’s too far away.

Annual ChampionshipWe have confirmed the Singapore Island Country Club New Course for the afternoon of 26 August, the very same day the Romans invaded Britain, Krakatoa erupted, the USSR launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile and the Beatles released Hey Jude.

As Julius, Nikita, Sir Frederick Weld, Paul and Barclays Capital would agree, it’s a date that has to go into the diary.

Convenor’s FootnoteIn support of our generous sponsor and mindful of our relationships with fellow clubs, when you play for The Tanglin Club please wear a blue Barclays shirt and join the prize-giving dinner.

LAWN BOWLS

Inter-Club Pairs LeagueTen teams competed on a round-robin basis from 14 February to 11 April. Each team played nine games. The standard of play was generally high, as would be expected of the participants, many of whom have experience of international compe-tition. Five points were awarded to each winning team and two points for a draw, so that an overall maxi-mum of 45 points was available to every team.

Tanglin B were winners of the League with 40 points, and con-gratulations go to Rodger Kimpton, the team captain and organiser of the event. He was well supported by his Team Members to ensure that The Tanglin Club presence in the Singapore Lawn Bowls fraternity is now well established, having won the overall honours twice in the three years of the league’s existence.

First runner-up was SingTel with 35 points and second runner-up was ELBC-A with 32. Regrettably, Tanglin A and Tanglin C, were only able to

achieve a modest number of wins between them, but there is no doubt that the experience will be put to good use during future tournaments.

Forthcoming EventsMontmorency Bowling Club from Australia will be visiting us for a friendly match on Sunday, 26 June when we will require a minimum number of 24 players. Please register soon to ensure your involvement in an afternoon of good sporting activity.

During the second half of the year, we expect to send a representative team to Darwin where bowls will be played against several local teams. Section Members who would like to go on this tour should please register as soon as possible.

Tanglin Club ChampionshipsBoth the Singles and the Drawn Pairs competitions are well under way. There have been few closely fought games but so far, most have been according to popular expecta-tion with no major upsets. Entries will soon be required for the Open Pairs so now is the time to make your over-tures to the partner of your choice!

We Are Here For You!Members that have yet to explore the world of Lawn Bowls will have noticed and perhaps read the announcement on the opposite page.

Those who have played other field sports which require hand-eye coor-dination and would like to have a go

at Lawn Bowls, why not come to one of our introduction sessions? All the equipment needed is here, and we have a team of talented bowlers to explain all aspects of the game.

Just don your trainers or flat-soled shoes, comfortable clothes and come and join us on Sunday afternoons from 3.30pm and Wednesday eve-nings from 5.30pm. These are the most popular times, but we are flex-ible and can fit in any reasonable time on any day.

Apart from the sport itself, we have a well-established social pro-gramme both within and beyond the Club which provides the oppor-tunity for enjoyment beyond the bowling green.

If you would like to chat about it, call at the Sports & Recreation Office for more information. You are unlikely to regret it.

T h e L a w n B o w l s S e c t i o n Committee and Members sincerely hope to see you soon.

Mother’s Day Merlion Meet at the British Club

The British Club hosted the Third Merlion Meet in the morning of 8 May, which was Mother’s Day.

The Tanglin Club was represented by 12 swimmers although it was a busy day – being a special occasion and also the examination period.

The butterfly and breaststroke events were raced at this meet and our swimmers won three Gold, six Silver and six Bronze Medals.

We want to thank all mums for doing so much in supporting their children in their swimming activities.

We hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Birthday Bash14 MayAfter a very good turnout of 44 players for social Squash, we got together in the Beer Garden to help celebrate those who had recent birthdays: Paul Harnett, Gary Matthews, Anthony Rawlinson, Shane Hagan and Peter Allan. These birthday boys have seen many birthdays and the youngsters were far more excited at seeing a birthday cake. The sons of a couple of players got into the action early and blew out the candles.

Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) Jumbo DoublesApril 30 to May 2This tournament is part of the annual calendar of Jumbo Doubles, and seven teams represented The Tanglin Club. The following account is from Allan Leddra.

“A relatively small draw this year (32 teams) meant that the very, very early morning starts (normally 7am) were not necessary and this allowed our entrants to either spend some extra time at the bar or longer time to recuperate. So, we wonder which it was.

TC 5 (Allan Leddra and Richard Coventry) started with a good win over HKFC 2 (father and son), they were down 9-11 in the third, and won 2-1.

The next round was one too many for them against TC 1 (Shane Hagan and Timothy Arnold). TC 6 (Robert Wiener and Glenn Bryce) went into the Plate and played HKFC 5 (another father and son). Bryce arrived displaying his six-pack, along with copious wine and probably other liquid refreshments, so there was no doubt which avenue he chose the night before. Under normal circumstances this should have been a win for The Tanglin Club, but instead it was “wine”!

RBSC had a race day on the Saturday and we were treated to some exciting horse racing. At RBSC you are so close to the track that you can see the jockeys and horses very clearly and it is a great atmosphere. No doubt a few of our guys lost some money that afternoon.

Handicap Tournament April

This style of tournament is a sort of lottery and allows any player a chance of winning, regardless of playing standard. Each game is played to 15 points with players being allocated varying positive or negative handicaps. In the final this year, Ishwalal Pranlal prevailed over Sam Alexander, while in the plate, Alex Montefiore beat Ian Collins in the plate final

Give Racketball A TryWe now have 175 Squash Section Members, but very few ladies. A drive is on this year to get more ladies on court, and part of this is to promote racketball, which can be played on the Squash singles court and is a lot easier for beginners.

For racketball, the racket is like a tennis racket with a shorter shaft, the ball is bigger, bounces like a tennis ball (see photo), is easier to play with and allows longer rallies for beginners. I first saw racketball played at the Penang Sports Club where many of the older players chose to play racketball because they did not have to turn and bend so much . Fo r f u r the r information about racketball, contact Ross MacKenzie.

Our New Singles Champions

May was a busy month for the Club Championships. Let me update you on the Annual Singles results.

They were held over the week of 3 May. The rain stayed away, but the heat remained. We had 22 entries from the men, which was a knockout, and eight ladies for the singles, where we held a round robin.

Missing from our championships were our reigning champs, so the title was up for grabs from someone new. During the tournament, our No. 2 seed Vincent Lam had to withdraw due to the early arrival of his first child, a girl born 7 May at 5.47pm. Congratulations!

The first men’s semi-finals came down to the brothers Ali and Imran Mooraj, the older brother Imran overpowering his younger brother. The other semi-final was between Taco Portengen and Evan Tan, where the

more experienced Taco pulled away with a win to move into the final.

The first ladies’ semi-final was between Maddie Noda and Shigeko Ueno. Shigeko put up a great battle against Maddie, losing in three sets. The second semi-final was between the much younger Anne Tan and this writer, who put up a good fight but was overpowered by some blistering shots from her opponent.

The men’s final between Taco and Imran ended in a 6-2, 6-2 win to Taco. Imran at only 13 is a very talented player and someone to continue to watch. It was a well-played match indeed.

The ladies’ final between Anne and Maddie was also a very good match, with Anne taking the title 6-1, 6-2.

Hitting the Sweet SpotWith a new name and new image, the Tanglin Hit Squad (formerly the Tanglin Tough Cookies) left the crumbs of last season behind and “hit” the courts running.

Our squad enjoys wonderful team spirit and loyalty. Especially appreciated are the Hit ladies who regularly come to support the team even on the days they are not scheduled to play.

With the guidance and support of our great coaches (thanks,Ken Smith, Scott McLean and Greg Hassett!) and the skilful leadership of our much-loved Ling, we emerged at the top of our Division D.

We look forward to the challenges of Division C tennis!

WELLNESS

Breathing correctly is important to support all our vital functions.

Learning how to breathe properly and effectively promotes better bodily function and can substantially improve the quality of life.

Emotions are closely connected

with breathing. How we feel is reflect-ed in our pattern of breathing.

Fear, anger and anxiety produce fast, shallow and irregular breathing.

On the other hand, feelings of pleasure, contentment and happiness induce slow, gentle breathing.

The way you hold your body also affects the way you breathe, and the way you breathe affects the align-ment, balance and appearance of your body.

In alternative medicine, correct breathing is an important therapeutic tool to help reduce stress and pro-mote a sense of self-control.

How do you breathe in (draw air into the lungs) and breathe out (expel air from the lungs) properly and effectively? Simply be more aware of

the “tools” you have and learn how to make better use of them. • The nose controls the quantity and quality of air we take in. The nose takes in as much or as little air as we train it to do. Inside, tiny hairs and a mucous membrane

trap dirt so that the air is f i l tered before enter ing the lungs.• The pharynx, also known as t rachea , opens in to the windpipe.• The lungs are made up of a complex network of bronchi (air passages), bronchioles (sub-division of the bronchi) and alveoli (air sacs).• The diaphragm is the major

muscle drawing air into the lungs. Fatigue, sluggishness, a poor

immune response and stress affect the way we use our diaphragm. With shal-low breathing, we are reaching only the top of the lungs and are depriving our bodies of health-giving oxygen.

But the point is, we can cre-ate a change in our emotional state by consciously altering our pattern of breathing.

The first step is to breathe correctly when breathing consciously. Think of yourself as a bird, soaring in the sky with nothing around you but cool, fresh air. Your breathing is effortless, smooth

and steady, with the air reaching right to your lungs.

Follow these simple steps.

• Breathe in through your nose, letting it filter, warm and moisten the air, preparing it for the lungs.• Breathe in slowly, deeply and gently as this conserves energy and prevents fatigue. By slowing down your breathing, you prevent the build up of tension.• Spend more time exhaling than inhaling. Make it twice as long. For example, breathe in through your nose for four counts, hold for four, than exhale through your mouth, counting to eight. This gets rid of stale air more effectively.

DVD ReviewThe King’s Speech starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush

Prince Albert (Firth) has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life. Unfortunately for him, he is suddenly thrust into the limelight after the death of his father King George V and the scandalous abdication of his elder brother Prince Edward VII.

King George VI, the new King of England, is head of a country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader. His wife, Elizabeth, the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist Lionel Logue (Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill, the King overcomes his stammer and delivers a radio address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. It is based on a true story.

Book ReviewThe Last Four ThingsBy Paul Hoffman

Allow Hoffman to draw you once more into a world of dark fantasy, adventure, death and destruction. The Last Four Things, which refer to death, judgement, heaven and hell, is a sequel to The Left Hand of God.

If fervent belief, End of Days prophecies and tortured souls are your cup of tea, then follow Thomas Cale as he continues on his journey of self discovery.

It begins with Cale’s return to the Redeemer Sanctuary, the stronghold of a secretive sect of warrior monks.

He is told by the Lord Militant that the destruction of mankind is necessary and the only way to undo God’s greatest mistake.

Cale seemingly accepts his role as the Left Hand of God, the Angel of Death. Absolute power is within his grasp. But perhaps not even the grim power that the Redeemers hold over Cale is enough.

The boy turns from love to poisonous hatred in a heartbeat, and switches between kindness and utter violence in the blink of an eye.

The annihilation that the Redeemers seek may well be in Cale’s hands – but his soul is far stranger than they can ever know.
