Page 4: The Tanglin Club Magazine: December 2012

My Fellow Members

It has been seven months since the AGM on 30/4/12, and five months to the next; a good time to render an interim report, and to share our plans for next year.

The operating surplus (sans members’ entrance fees, depreciation and investment income) for February 2012 to October 2012, compared to the corresponding period last year, increased by $807k (this year’s surplus of $604k against last year’s loss of $203k). The increase was due, in part, to higher revenues of $434k from F&B. The Churchill Room was closed for three months last year for renovations. The Supper Club, introduced in August has increased covers from 1,700 in July to 1,950 in October. The average check has increased from about $44 to $48. With the introduction of a slew of measures, including more rigorous purchasing policies, selective price increases, reducing wastage and the introduction of new menu items, overall food costs across all outlets have been lowered by an average of four percentage points since June. The good news is that the operating deficits in the Churchill Room, Wheelhouse and Tangles, YTD is now $522k, compared to $845k last year, a reduction of $323k, or 38%. Although more remains to be done, I am confident that we are moving in the right direction. On behalf of the Club, I would like to thank the F&B Convenor, his sub-committee members and Management for their hard work, perseverance and commitment in producing these happier figures.

Higher guestroom and subscription revenues, by $262k and $255k respectively, contributed to the operating surplus. The better guestroom revenues YTD are mainly due to the fact that they were closed for 2 months last year for renovations and the increased subscription income came from new Members.

The surplus was reduced by lower jackpot collections of $146k because of lower patronage and higher payouts. Utilities rose by $136k owing to higher tariffs. Effective 1/8/12, the Club has locked in electricity supplies at a fixed tariff of $0.2498/kwh for one year.

If we consider only members’ entrance fees, depreciation and investment

income, the Club incurred a deficit of $346k, compared to a surplus of $2.069 million last year. YTD we admitted 31 new (excluding 3 conversions from term membership) Members, compared to 87 (excluding 8 conversions from term membership) last year, resulting in a reduction of $2 million in members’ entrance fees. Depreciation increased by $458k as we have fully capitalized the amounts spent on the renovations to the Wheelhouse, Guestrooms, Churchill, Main Lobby, Entrance and Driveway.

Overall, YTD, we have a surplus of $258k before tax, compared to last year’s $1.866 million.

Cash and bank balances were reduced to invest in fixed income bonds, earning an average return of 3.6% per annum. As at 31/10/12, our current assets totalled $19.313 million and our non-current assets, comprising property, plant and equipment and held-to-maturity investments totalled $52.857 million. Our current liabilities comprising trade and other payables and members’ accounts and income tax payable are $6.255 million. The balance $65.914 million are in funds and reserves. We have no borrowings.

Since May, the GC has been consulting Members on the major challenges facing the Club. These include (a) the need for fair, sensible and clear rules for the indemnity of officers and dispute resolution in the Club (b) the optimization and rationalisation of space and facilities to cater for the present and future needs of Members, and (c) the greying of the membership.

The GC intends to convene a Special General Meeting (SGM) on 14/1/13 to discuss, and if thought appropriate, to approve its responses to these challenges. Documents for the SGM will be sent to Members shortly.

Four resolutions will be tabled at the SGM. Resolutions 1 and 2 are amendments to Rules 45A and 45B, on the indemnity of officers and dispute resolution in the Club. Resolution 3 seeks to amend Rule 11(v) by increasing the PTM from 4,000 to 5,000. Resolution 4 seeks approval for expenditure not exceeding $2.42 million for the renovation and refurbishment of the Wet Bar, Wine Bar, Card Room, Terrace Dining, Deli and extensions and improvements to the Tavern kitchen.

On 22/11/12, the GC approved the conversion of the Tangles into a Chinese restaurant, to provide another option for family dining for Members. At the same time, Management is looking into providing a bar or other facility for users of the Sports Centre. We will seek Members’ view on the proposal at a dialogue early next year. Subject to the consensus at the dialogue, we will seek the necessary approvals at the Annual General Meeting.

My GC colleagues and I believe that the four resolutions for the SGM (and the proposal for a Chinese restaurant at the Tangles) are in the interest of the Club. I value the contributions of Members at the three dialogues, and I am grateful to those who have taken the time to write to me after the dialogues with their many thoughtful suggestions and comments. I agree with my good friend Sia Yong that with goodwill, understanding, courage and imagination, we can overcome these challenges, and in the process, consolidate our position as the best club in Singapore. I urge you to attend the SGM and to vote for the four resolutions.

On the occasion of the coming festive season, Helen and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Members and Staff, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

THE TANGLIN CLUB2

Page 5: The Tanglin Club Magazine: December 2012

Dear Members,

It is my first Christmas in The Tanglin Club, and I am looking forward to seeing our members coming together to celebrate the season with good food and drink, and the camaraderie in the Christmas spirit that is unique to this Club. Our Christmas promotions are being booked fast, so if you have not done so, do reserve your seats quickly.

The holidays remind us to take a break from the hustle-and-bustle of work, and to spend our time with family, friends and

loved ones, and also to remind ourselves of our good fortune over the year, and to assist those less fortunate than ourselves.

So if you think you’ve been more naughty than nice, make some positive resolutions for the new year!

With that, I would like to wish all our members and their families, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

DO YOU KNOW?

STAR EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTHThere were two Club employees who were nominated:

Xu Jin Da from Tangles, and Moo Kean Hin, Chef De Partiefrom the Tavern Kitchen. Congratulations to their excellent

service and dedication to the Club!

MEMBERS’ REVIEW OF RECIPROCAL CLUBS

To the Members of The Tanglin Club,

If you travel to overseas destinations frequently and reside in clubs during your stay, we would appreciate your valuable feedback in the evaluation of the following clubs that have requested an arrangement of reciprocity with The Tanglin Club:

•The Vault Club, Cambodia•Chiraan Fort Club, Secunderabad, India

Please do let us know your opinions and ratings of these clubs, in terms of their accessibility from major airports/seaports, dining facilities and privileges, quality of accommodations, sporting facilities, etc., and email them to [email protected].

GUESTS TO PAY FOR PARKINGAs a means to defray increasing maintenance costs for the Club’s Multi-Storey Car Parks, and also due to limited parking lots, the Club will implement guest parking charges in mid-December 2012. Guest vehicles are still required to

be registered with the Club, prior to their entry, and can only be parked at the top-most deck of the Main Clubhouse Car Park, and in the Sports & Recreation Complex on weekdays only.

Members with foreign-registered vehicles without In-Vehicle Units (IUs) are advised to register a cash card of their choice with the Membership Department, to enable their registered vehicles entry to the Club’s Car Parks.

Guests with foreign-registered vehicles without IUs will need to use cash cards to gain entry into the Car Parks, from which the prevailing parking charges will be deducted upon exit.

PROPER USE OF SWIMMING LANESIn response to some enquiries, the Club would like to clarify the use of swimming lanes.

The swimming pool has eight official lanes, demarcated by the dark blue tiles and numbered from the starting blocks. Currently, there are three lanes designated for lap swimmers and the remaining lanes for other recreational users.

Please be reminded that the extreme left and right lanes are meant for entry and exit purposes only. Pool users are encouraged to keep that area clear for safety reasons.

THE TANGLIN CLUB5

I start my message this month with the season’s greetings to one and all! This is the most exciting time for the Club every year, and I am absolutely thrilled to see my old friends coming together to spend the holidays here and spread the good cheer around. A slew of fantastic Christmas events and promotions have been prepared for our members and their guests, so do read through this issue to find out more.

In early November, I was privileged to be at a familiar sporting event that’s close to my heart: the Singapore Cricket Club Rugby 7’s at the Padang. A total of 24 teams battled for the trophy, and what a battle it was! Being a rugger fan, I have never missed attending the matches in all these years, and this year, I was delighted to see old friends who travelled far and wide just for rugby. I would be lying if I did not say that I felt a small measure of pride when my friends were surprised to see me as fanatical as ever about my favourite sport.

On a more sombre note, old friends and acquaintances met up also for a solemn reason: Remembrance Day. Everyone gathered to pay their respects to their comrades-in-arms who perished in the line of duty during the Second World War. In occupied Singapore, captured Allied soldiers were marched to Changi Prison seventy years ago, and to commemorate that, members of the Royal Marines and Royal Navy retraced the route by walking the 21 kilometres from the Padang to Changi Chapel. As a child of the era, I remember the events of the war vividly, and I carry the memory of friends lost, to this day.

In the Club, good entertainment preceded our forthcoming festivities. We had the pleasure and honour to host Ms. Josephine Chia, a member of the Club and accomplished author of her memoirs, “Frog Under a Coconut Shell” at the Meet-the-Author evening at the Wine Bar on 25 October. For more on this, please read Mr. Robert Yeo’s inspiring article on the event on

page 10. Speaking of inspiring stories, turn to page 11 for a truly remarkable tale of a young man’s struggle to overcome adversity; he is a child of new members to the Club, and I was fascinated and touched by his positive journey through his difficulties, despite the obstacles that he has to face. Also, on page 28, you’ll find the adventures of the Bridge Section through the marvelously magical land of Sri Lanka, and of their riotously entertaining Mexican-themed gala dinner.

I sign off for the year 2012, wishing all my friends and loved ones, especially those Absent Members abroad, a very Merry Christmas and a hopeful Happy New Year!

Three words: total world destruction. All over the world, brutal attacks are crippling entire cities. Jackson Oz, a young biologist, watches the escalating events with an increasing sense of dread. When he witnesses a coordinated lion ambush in Africa, the enormity of the violence to come becomes terrifyingly clear. With the help of ecologist Chloe Tousignant, Oz races to warn world leaders before it’s too late. The attacks are growing in ferocity, cunning, and planning, and soon there will be no place left for humans to hide.

Author Josephine Chia and member of the Club gave an informative and engaging talk on Thursday, 25th October 2012 in the Wine Bar. It was based on her memoirs, ‘Frog Under a Coconut Shell’ (Katak Bawah Tempurong), reprinted 2012.

I was privileged to chair it.

It was informative because Josephine grew up in Potong Pasir in the fifties, and witnessed Singapore’s progress enormously from, to use the phrase from former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, “third world to first world”. Her peranakan family, father Teochew and mother from Malacca, was so poor her mother had to sew her daughter’s dresses from old curtains. On another occassion, she and her brother looked hungrily at a piece of steak intended for a dog and dumped by an English family who lived up on the hill. She narrated how her mother empowered her by insisting that she go to school, against her father’s wishes. Further after she has learned to read and borrowed books

from the National Library in Stamford Road, her father tore one of the books in anger and she fought her father and was severely punished.

The same mother who so empowered her was later to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and became an old woman who could hardly recognize her and who could not control her mental and physiological processes. Josephine, who had married and settled in England, would return occasionally and nurse her mother – and suffer pangs of guilt that she could not be around to be with her stricken mother with whom she has shared a tremendous bond. Thus is the engaging part of her memoir.

Her candor in probing personal aspects of family history, warts and all, as well as her younger sister’s presence, contributed to the poignancy. Altogether, about 30 persons attended the talk which was supplemented by black and white photographs of old Singapore. Many questions were asked. Josephine also displayed some typical Nonya wares and signed copies of her book.

All told, it was an entertaining evening.

Life is a gift and could end at any given time. That is why I firmly believe that a person should dedicate their life to their dreams, so when the time comes to leave this earth they can look back and have no regrets. I have always been a believer in this philosophy and try to live my life in such a way that nothing is ever held back. This mindset is hard to live by but I have had many experiences that brought me close to death, so I have learned to appreciate life more than most.

From birth until the age of two, I spent the majority of my time in hospitals because of a kidney and liver condition. At the age of nine I lost my vision due to an intense bleed caused by a very sick liver. This acute illness nearly took my life! It was at this particular time that I realized that my childhood dream of becoming a professional baseball player was impossible. It was very clear to me that I would never be able to do things that required great vision, such as becoming an auto mechanic or computer technician. A good career would have to be achieved through the application of my intelligence and this intelligence would have to be a result of superior academic achievement.

Despite these challenges, I have managed to accomplish many things. I am most proud of the number of community service hours that I contributed back to those in need. In total, I have logged in 130 service hours at the Lighthouse for the Blind. This experience has made me a more rounded person as I was able to guide and counsel others that are dealing with a similar “situation” to my own. Additionally, volunteering allowed me to focus on others and not myself. It would have been quite easy to pity myself and simply give up. This is not in my DNA. Quitting or giving up are never

optional, no matter how great the challenge. People who cannot see are not stupid; we are blind and want to be treated as equals with our sighted peers. Yes, I have health issues. However, others face much more difficult and life-threatening issues daily or even by the minute.

No single instance shaped the way I go about living my life but rather I take my life as a whole learning experience. The drive and motivation I learned from these experiences is unmatched by any college student. I know this because I endured two years of high school with cancer and still was able to graduate with my class. Through it all, I know that my family will always be there for me and will provide whatever they can to help me succeed. A dimension that is also important is that I have confidence in myself and strive to be the best. I want what others think is impossible because of my disability. With my strong will and high self-esteem I hope to impact people’s life in a positive way. It is my hopes to achieve excellence, while helping others realise that their only limit comes from within.

Strong character is very important to me. I am not a follower by any stretch. In fact, I am quite proud of my achievement to stay alcohol and drug-free throughout my life. No one can pressure or convince me to do things that I do not want to do. More often than not, I am the one who demonstrates leadership to others and encourages sound decision-making.

Adversity is a great teacher and I aspire to be a great student. My motivation comes from my experience and my desire to rise to the top is a result of a strong value system. Life is precious indeed and I value every second that I am blessed to be on this planet.

Witness the boundaries between reality and make-believe blur at Incanto™, the thrilling new magic spectacular at Resorts World® Sentosa. This stunning multi-million dollar show billed as one of Singapore’s largest productions is headlined by renowned illusionist Joe Labero, a three-time recipient of the Merlin Award whose shows have reached worldwide audiences of more than 100 million. Be spellbound by the show’s death-defying illusions and astonishing acrobatic sequences, delivered by a team of award-winning producers and an international cast of 50 performers from around the globe.

A curious young Seeker enters a strange monastery, the gateway to a hidden dimension of mystery and illusion. Guided by the whimsical Jester, the Seeker’s innocence attracts the fearful Dungeon Master, mortal enemy of the Sorcerer – played by Joe Labero, wizard of the mystical arts. Follow her thrilling adventures until the final showdown between Good and Evil.

Among the mind-blowing illusions performed by Labero are bold spectacles that have never been seen in Singapore such as the Double Levitation, where both Seeker and Sorcerer soar more than 10 metres simultaneously above the stage, and the Blade Runner, a terrifying sequence where a massive blade descends and slices the vanquished Dungeon Master in half.

Supporting Labero is a jaw-dropping line-up of acrobatic feats like the Wheel of Death, which has taken Las Vegas by storm. The biggest of its kind ever seen in Asia, this incredible feat is performed by the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe, winner of multiple awards globally including gold prizes at the Festival Mondial du Cirque de L’Avenir and Gold & Silver Clown awards at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival.

Seeing is believing in this epic entertainment experience where magic meets fantasy in a high-energy combination of extraordinary illusion and acrobatics, soaring vocals, dynamic dance and lavish costumes and sets that make Incanto a thrilling and unforgettable

experience for the entire family.

DARTS

BILLIARDS

The past month has seen the start of the festive season, with a multicultural theme, starting with Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali and Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December.

Our Section Night was on 18 October with a good 16 games played among eight players with Kris going home with the prize money!

The month also saw the Andy Webster Handicap Doubles Tournament being played on 20 October with the winning pair of Arya Ashok and Ken Gin.

We will report on our Hong Kong trip in next month’s magazine and the next major event is our annual Christmas dinner!

Alex YewBilliards Committee Member

A FRIENDLY DARTS GAME WITH THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION On 10 November, Saturday afternoon, we had a great game of darts with the players from the British High Commission. Since darts offers people a social activity, we were able to share an ambience of enjoyment.

The male competitors at the High Commission proved their talents by winning the friendly game of darts which obviously confirmed the popularity of the game in the UK pubs.

I am proud to express our gratitude to the female dart players at The Tanglin Club for winning the matches so confidently. They proved that the Practice is the act of rehearsing a behaviour over and over, or engaging in an activity again and again, for the purpose of improving or mastering it, as in the phrase "practice makes perfect". On Saturday afternoon, they sincerely proved that practice makes perfect. Congratulations to the ladies at The Tanglin Club and keep up the good work.

The delightful afternoon was spent with the competitors constantly inter mingling to achieve their final score. Beer, wine and finger food followed by a sumptuous dinner filled the tables of Tangles while the competition provided exposure to the fun, sportsmanship, and of course the pressures of the sport of darts.

Darts players, don’t miss the Novices Tournament on the 22 December 2012 at Tangles, followed by the Darts Dinner and Dance at the Churchill Room. Please join us to celebrate the year-end get-together. Registration forms are available at the S&R counter.

Our thanks goes to MC Cheong: Darts Convenor for organising the event and spending time with the participants without taking part in the game; Cielito for her cooperation and to the friendly staff at the Tangles.

BALUT

"Staff, this year the Balut Section is here with its "A" game. We are taking no prisoners", was the welcome speech from Captain Sapinah. The tone set, wrists loosened, and blood curdling cries rang around the room - from the Staff. The Balut Section members came out from the ensuing carnage dazed, bemused and befuddled. It was another trouncing and we are sure that the Staff are practicing in secret. The overall winner with the highest total score was Jefferey 766 followed by Sudin with 713, Salim at 698 and Dean's 683 bringing up the rear. Jefferey walked away with the highest game score as well after throwing down 156. Min Song spared the Section's blushes with both the highest total and game scores of 702 and 143 respectively. Section members left the Club late and had only one comment separated by punctuation; "We are playing them again next year?" and "We are playing them againnext year!".

The middle of the month saw us at the Indian Association for the penultimate inter-club game. Despite Nina Menon getting two Balut in the same game the SCC were the overall winners. Kudos to Sapinah Hughes for keeping the Club’s flag flying by coming in second in the overall inter-club standings. Fantastic job and more to come in 2013!

The monthly game brought October to an end. This was a more sedate affair as we did not want to disturb those at the Wet Bar too much... Nina Menon was all smiles with her 146 highest game score, and Grace Goh beamed at her highest total score of 618.

This was followed by the Inter-Section game - a triangular with Tennis and Lawn Bowls. The Wine Bar was the venue, and if timbers could be rattled, they were. The noise was spectacular, the race for the lowest score fought desperately, and novices scoring with gay abandon. Tennis won the bragging score with the highest overall score of 6967, followed by Balut with 6708 and LB with 6634. The Section suspects that some defectors, sorry, section members seconded to Tennis, aided and abetted this. Sachiko Taylor from

Tennis had the highest total score of 690, and the scribe had the highest game score of 144.

The Leaderboard (5 best scores) says: 1. Sapinah Hughes – 31132. Sethuraman G – 30223. Fatema Sadiq – 29834. Grace Goh – 29795. Vikram Raman – 2889

By the time this comes out in print, last game would have been played and the winner crowned. Look out for the winner in the Club’s weekly Newsbites email! A very interesting year indeed!

Ayubowan is a Sinhalese greeting meaning “May You Live Long” or “Welcome”, and the 18 ladies from the Tanglin Club Bridge Section who landed at Colombo’s Bandaranayake Airport on the morning of Saturday 6th October were certainly shown a welcome to remember. Tanglin Club member Shyamala Kanagasundram had arranged a wonderful tour of some of the highlights of her island home, this Pearl of The Orient, and as we set off on our tour bus for Ahungalle we had little idea of the wealth and variety of delights in store.

First stop was the beautiful beach hotel, The Heritance Ahungalle designed by the world famous Sri Lankan architect Jeffrey Bawa, where we enjoyed a river cruise taking in the sights of mangrove swamps, wildlife, local temples and cinnamon cultivation before returning to the hotel for dinner and relaxation.

The next morning at breakfast Shyamala introduced us to some local breakfast dishes, including Hoppers, which everyone loved, as well as the amazing variety and flavour of the local fruits. We then set off for the town of Galle, stopping en route to visit a turtle conservation project, which was a big hit with all the ladies, especially the 3 rare albino turtles. In Galle we visited the Dutch Reformed Church and Museum and spent some time in a local jewelry store (another big hit!) before heading off for lunch at the beautiful home of long time friend of the Tanglin Club Bridge Section, Ruth Hill, where we were treated to a feast of Sri Lankan dishes and amazing hospitality whilst enjoying the lush gardens and architectural delights of her hilltop home.

The evening was spent watching the exciting ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup Final between Sri Lanka and the West Indies on a large screen in the hotel gardens, what great timing to be in Sri Lanka for this event, and though we were all rooting for Sri Lanka unfortunately the game did not go their way in the end.

Monday morning brought great excitement as we boarded the bus to

head for Colombo and our first Bridge game of the tour. Our bags were dropped at The Cinnamon Grand Hotel as we headed off to the Women’s International Club to play. Our Tanglin Club players did us proud as Deepa Gupta and Sherna Danani came in second place, narrowly beaten by the W.I.C. Club Champions. The following morning brought another, longer Championship Game where first place was won by our very own players, Sharon Gray and Susan McDonnell, and runners up were Shyamala Kanagasundram and Rohini Arya – Well Done Tanglin Club Players!! Some of the ladies spent the rest of the afternoon indulging in a spot of shopping while others took the opportunity to try out the delights of the local massages and facials which were pronounced heavenly!

Dinner that night was held at Shyamala’s ancestral home in Colombo,“Ratna Bhavan” which has been in her family for the last hundred years, where we were treated to a feast of delights for all the senses, from the beautiful traditional welcome awaiting us at the entrance, to the photographs of past generations adorning the walls and the delicious dinner set in the tropical garden, it was a privilege to be your guests Shyamala, thank you so much for inviting us to your wonderful home.

Next morning we had an early start as we had a long bus journey ahead of us to reach the hill station at Nuwara Eliya. We made a couple of stops along the way, to buy cashew nuts at the roadside and notably to visit the Elephant Orphanage where we all wanted to adopt a baby elephant. Time passed quickly as we played Bridge (difficult on a moving bus!), sang or told jokes. As we continued on our way the road grew steeper and narrower

and the air cooler as we climbed into the hills, passing tea plantations and vegetable farms along the way. We finally reached our destination of The Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya, a reciprocal club of The Tanglin Club, where the first evening was spent relaxing, enjoying a wonderful dinner and appreciating the hot water bottles provided by the attentive staff! The following day was free for relaxation or walking before we set off for lunch at the Tea Factory Hotel, a former tea factory. We were also able to visit a working tea factory where we learned about the different processes involved and the different types and grades of Sri Lankan tea, some of which we purchased to try at home.

Friday morning saw us leave Nuwara Eliya for Kandalama, passing through Kandy on the way, to reach the Heritance Kandalama Hotel, again designed by Jeffery Bawa. The hotel is an amazing concept, built around a natural rock with breathtaking views of the lakes and hills beyond, and with a wealth of wildlife including the monkeys who loved to sit on our balconies waiting to grab any tidbit they could find! Rumour has it one of our group lost a watch to these cheeky monkeys!

As we left on our final day we made a stop at the impressive Dambulla Rock Caves which involved climbing up about 400 steep steps. The climb was well worth the effort to see the painted walls and ceilings of the 5 rock caves with over 150 images of the Buddha, the largest of which is over 14 metres long. The return descent was less impressive as the heavens opened and we returned to our tour bus like drowned rats, enforcing an unscheduled stop to haul the suitcases out of the luggage compartment of the bus so that we could dry off and change our

clothes before heading to the airport for our overnight flight back to Singapore.

We landed back at Changi Airport early Morning on Sunday October 14th, tired and disheveled but with a wealth of shared memories and experiences which we will never forget. Many, many thanks go to Shyamala for all her hard work and meticulous planning which made the trip such a huge success, also to Ruth Hill for welcoming us to her beautiful home, to Sam our tour guide and the driver and his assistant who got us back home again safely, to Terry Young for sharing her photos with me and to all who went on the trip for the fun and laughter we had along the way!

Gihilla Ennam Yaaluna! Until we meet again!

MEXICAN BRIDGE FIESTA!On October 31st, traditionally known as All Hallows Eve or Halloween, 56 Bridge players converged on the Raffles Room for a night of thrills, but not the scary kind! They were greeted by a Festive Fiesta atmosphere of registration staff wearing sombreros, Mexican food on the Buffet, Mariachi Music on the sound system, cacti and colourful napkins on the dinner tables and jugs of Margaritas on the bar!

After cocktails and dinner the players moved to the bridge tables in the Claymore Room to be greeted by their sombrero-wearing Head Honcho, Derek Maggs, who explained how the evening’s game would run. Pairs of players formed mixed teams and were given appropriate names such as Chimichangas and Married Mariachis, much to everyone’s amusement, and the games began.

A complicated Swiss Pairs movement of both players and boards followed but everyone soon got into the swing of things and the evening progressed with much fun and laughter as spot prizes were announced and contracts bid and made.

At the end of the evening the teams came together to collate the scores and the final result was announced with the Hot Jalapeños team, comprising Karol Crouse and Zain Moledina, and Candy and Richard Brown, pronounced the winners.

Congratulations to the winning team and thanks to all who participated in the evening’s events with special thanks going to Derek, F&B and S&R staff and to the Bridge Committee for all their hard work and support.

Hasta La Vista!!

GOLF

A group of keen golfers (and one sightseer) recently took part in a trip to Kunming and Lijang in China organised by the Golf Section. Golf in that part of China is growing rapidly and we were able to play on four different courses, all very challenging. As usual on these trips the camaraderie among the group was excellent which adds to the enjoyment.

Straight off the plane in Kunming we headed for Sunshine Golf Club. Kunming stands at 1500 metres and we were told golf balls go further at altitude. Many found

this not to be the case unless of course they were headed for water or adjacent woodland!

Next day we headed even higher up to 2200 metres, by plane to Lijang, one of the most picturesque old towns in China. Play there was at Old Town Golf Club, a pretty course by the side of a lake. There was some time for sightseeing after golf when we visited the Old Town with some taking part in a Tea Ceremony while others found drink of a different variety in Bar Street!

Our first day in Lijang was cloudy so we were not able to see the famous Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Luckily the next day the clouds cleared for our game at the golf club of the same name located at the foot of the mountain. The views were spectacular and our non-golfer was able to get to the top by cable car. The course is at 3100 metres above sea level and is the longest golf course in the world at 8500 yards. Given that we all had several layers

of clothes to combat the cold weather and were fighting off the effects of altitude it certainly felt like it! Those who purchased portable oxygen cylinders for the game definitely played better!

Back in Kunming we had a day off to recover from three days in a row golf. This was spent sightseeing when we visited the Western Mountain to take in the views of Kunming and find some good luck at the Dragon’s Gate Temple. We also visited an ethnic tribe cultural village and many were very interested in the flexible marriage habits of the Mosuo tribe.

Back to golf, the next game was at Stone Forest Golf Club set in the middle of the famous Kunming Stone Forest, a collection of limestone rocks. The course was very pretty and enjoyable though there were a few problems with the stones for errant shots! We also experienced China traffic at first hand, coping with rush hour in both directions. Some gluttons for punishment, played a fifth game on the last day on the way to the airport while the more relaxed in the group visited the Flower Market or relaxed prior to the flight.

We experienced many types of Yunnan food on the trip with the highlights being the Mushroom Hot Pot and our dinners in a local restaurant in Kunming washed down of course with local beer and other types of beverage acquired in Changi Duty Free!

Sally Liew took the role of group leader and kept us in order throughout the trip – many thanks Sally! Lim Khoon Hin was official photographer and some of his photos are attached.

GOLF

Twenty one golfers from The Tanglin Club and their Seven guests descended on the manicured greens and well-maintained fairways of the Sentosa Golf Club on the afternoon of Thursday 25 October for the October golf outing organised by the Golf Section.

For the first time in recent memory, section members were invited to bring along guests for this event as it is always a pleasure to traipse through the fairways on Sentosa. Playing off the white tees, the friendly competition was played using the Stableford scoring system.

The three top positions went to:1. Lee Chee Chien 39 points2. Ranjan Ramchandani 33 points3. David Palmer 32 points

Our guests were not forgotten and awards were presented to the top two scores.1. Daniella Johnston 31 points2. Chan Siew Kay 30 points

After all the effort on the course, the players tucked into the wide assortment of local food available at the Golfers Terrace washed down with lots of pale ale.

31ST ANNUAL SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday, 10 November, the Club hosted the 31st Annual Sprint Championships. Once again, it looked as though proceedings would be delayed as the thunder clouds moved in, but luckily the weather brightened up and the swimming got underway.

Approximately 40 swimmers took part across a range of age groups. Our youngest swimmers in the 5 year-old category put in an encouraging display, and once again our master swimmers showed that swimming really is a sport one can participate in for life.

As is now customary, we finished with the parent/child relay which was well supported, and saw one of our Mum’s win two medals in the same race!

I would like to thank everyone who helped out to make the event run smoothly.

PERTH TOUR 25 TO 28 OCTOBERA group of fourteen Tanglin Club and five Royal Bangkok Sports Club lawn bowls enthusiasts was welcomed by two Western Australian clubs, both of whom have competed on our green in recent times. The match against Freemantle featured a combination of Tanglin and Royal Bangkok Sports Club members who were victors on two rinks from seven played. However it wasn’t all doom and gloom because our popular Rosalind made up the number for Freemantle and some said she was a prime reason why Freemantle came out winning! The newspaper clip shown alongside indicates the status of our visit making us feel rather important. Another feature of the visit was the fact that the team travelled from Perth to Freemantle on the train so some of the group were able to enjoy “senior’s fares”! The game was followed by hospitality and our thanks go to President Keith Bowden and to secretary Mathew Ngui for the kind invitation.

The highlight at Manning was a training clinic provided by the hosts which lasted for 90 minutes and included video recordings of the all important aspects of bowls delivery as well as individual attention for the less experienced of our players. Our sincere thanks to Peter Bowden for arranging the visit and to the Manning coaches. We really appreciate their commitment. Later in the day we played two sessions of nine ends with fours being the format. Manning suggested that we mix the players so that partisanship disappeared. A fine social example and great sportsmanship which we were delighted be part of.

The generous hospitality extended by Manning President Debbie Capper and her club members made us feel very much at home and we returned to Singapore with many happy memories.

Thanks to Vickki Dare for her devotion to the production of a pictorial record for our archives. What would we have done without her?

THE TANGLIN CLUB39

We last hosted this club two years ago when 64 players took part in the proceedings. Again we were fully populated and it was so satisfying to see a total of 64 men and women taking part in a keenly contested friendly match. Six of the eight rinks played went to Seremban so they won by a grand

total of 129 shots to Tanglin’s 99. Our winning skips were Zoher who won by 20 shots to 8 and Rodger who although trailing for most of the game came through with a victory of 16 shots against 13. Lunch was held at the Beer garden where well-earned sustenance was enjoyed by all.

LAWN BOWLS

HERE WE COME A-WASSAILINGThe green will be alive to the sound of carols and merry-making when we stage our Christmas bowls carnival on Sunday, 16 December. Fancy dress will be the order of the day and relaxation the name of the game. In the evening we shall enjoy a sumptuous Christmas dinner in Tangles so come along and join in the fun. All Club members are welcome but registration is essential, so contact the S&R office to indicate your interest as soon as possible.

HENTON CUPWhew! What a time we have had recently. The Henton Cup inter-section bowls competition proved to be more popular than ever this year with twelve teams in action on Sunday, 7 October. Most entrants had taken advantage of the training facilities made available by the generosity of Bowls Section members from which it is clear that the game is becoming well-liked among The Tanglin Club sporting fraternity. Long may it last!

The Group 1 round robin was won on the basis of a clean sweep by the General Committee team in the persons of Judy Ip-Harris (Entertainment Convenor), Patrick Kwek (Sports and Recreation Convenor), and Zoeb Sadiq (Treasurer). Their coach was the renowned bowler Maestro Rodger Kimpton whose teaching clearly paid dividends. GC met the team from the Squash Section of Merina Mackenzie, Craig Dole and David McIlwain in the final. They had come through the round robin less spectacularly but were no walk-over. With no loss all afternoon GC were undisputed favourites to take the title and although they took the first end with a one shot advantage their tactical ploy of opting for a long end backfired resulting in two shots and the title going to the Squash Section for the second year in succession.

THE TANGLIN CLUB40

MV Seven Skies, South China Sea, Saturday, 31 March 2012: Normally, on a live-aboard, the first dive of the day is the best. The sea is especially invigorating in the early morning, perhaps because the marine environment has been awake for many hours already.

Today, on board the MV Mata Ikan, things are different. Over breakfast we are still steaming to our intended dive site, the wreck of the MV Seven Skies, which lies at a depth of about 65m in open seas near the Anambas Islands, northeast of Singapore. Our purpose is simple: to place a memorial on the deck of the Seven Skies to commemorate Marcus Lim, a good friend, an accomplished diver and an active member of the Tanglin Club Scuba Section. Marcus died tragically while diving on the Seven Skies in late October 2009.

The 75kg memorial, a tapered rectangular block of concrete bearing the hand-prints of Marcus’s young sons Jaden and Tristan, was designed and constructed by Scuba Section members Stan Moderate and John Horsburgh. The tapered surface bears a brass plaque with the following inscription “In Memory of Dr Marcus Lim. Diver extraordinaire. Forever remembered by his buddies at The Tanglin Club Scuba Section”. Through the concrete core is an arms-length round hole, a swim-through for the smaller local inhabitants on the Seven Skies.

Despite the trip’s sad mission, our team of nine divers is relaxed and happy to be at sea. Our plan to deliver the memorial is worked out on a whiteboard in the saloon and our tools – lift bags, guidelines, marker buoys, scuba diving equipment and underwater scooters – are secured on the dive deck. One dive team is to set a guideline to the bridge of the Seven Skies where we have planned to place the memorial, while others are tasked to lower the weighty memorial using the ship’s crane and attach it to a clutch of inflated lift bags in the water. These are to be deflated in a controlled descent to 37m while another team of divers with scooters moves it through the water and into place. All this is to be captured by someone on film.

The good news is the memorial has made it to its intended final resting place. How it got there is another story. Let’s just say if Marcus was observing the proceedings, and I think he was, he would have been amused by the antics and felt great relief that his memorial wasn’t lost on the seabed at 65m!

THE TANGLIN CLUB41

The plan might have been a good one had we been on the wreck on Saturday morning. That would have given us time to survey the conditions, gauge the current and study the feasibility of our plan in the actual conditions.

As it was, we arrived in early Saturday afternoon, having left SAF Yacht Club at 7pm on Friday, and detoured through Nongsa for Indonesian immigration clearance. On arrival at the site, the boat crew moored the Mata Ikan to the wreck and set up a safety decompression station under the dive boat. As we entered the water it was already after 3pm and we had little time. Worse, there was a very strong current such that a fully-kitted-up diver, with extra stage tanks, and powered by an underwater scooter, was unable to make any headway against the current. The team to set up the guideline had to abort their attempt because of the current and a new team needed to join lines to establish our guideline to the bridge of the Seven Skies.

Father and son team John and Iain Horsburgh got in the water and worked their way along the mooring line to the wreck. They managed to send up a surface marker buoy to mark their spot but this soon disappeared under the surface carried by current! It was clear we needed a new plan.

The experienced crew of the Mata Ikan suggested we load the memorial into a dinghy, manoeuvre the dinghy above the wreck and lower the memorial by hand. Hanging onto the dinghy was a crew member armed only with mask and snorkel and a keen sense of direction. He caught a glimpse of the wreck and John and I lowered the memorial, attached to a 70m-long line, from the dinghy. Waiting in mid-water were Faris and Derek who, with the aid of underwater scooters, were to guide the placement of the memorial on the wreck as it was being lowered.

It must have been at this point that Marcus decided we needed a little divine help: Somehow, amidst the strong current and the fading daylight, the team managed to land the memorial on the wreck. Using liftbags, Faris and Derek then manoeuvred it into place – on the centre line of vessel by the engine room hatch at 37m.

And there it rests today. The divers who placed the memorial were Faris Alsagoff, Simon

Chong, Chu Hui Wen, John and Iain Horsburgh, Leong Yut Wah, Conor McCoole, Derek Quek and Dan Tan.

Postscript: Some six months after this expedition, a team of Tanglin Club divers returned to dive the Seven Skies and examine the condition of the memorial. It was a beautiful sight, occupying a prominent spot along the centerline of the ship. Some coral had started to grow on it, but the wording on the brass plate was still distinct. One of the divers remarked after the dive that looking at the memorial evoked fond memories of Marcus. Long may such memories endure.

TENNIS

The Tanglin Club fielded two men’s teams and a women’s squad for the annual Singapore Tennis Association inter-club league, indicating depth and commitment. Two men’s teams were fielded for the first time and both reached the semis of their respective divisions and we’re looking forward to more from the guys next year! The men’s B and C teams were joined by our women’s A Team, led by convenor Virginia Longfellow.

The B team began the tournament with a 2-1 win over Nanyang Technological University but then lost the next day to NUSS, with Mark Fernandes and Thio Shen Yi losing in a tight two-hour long match. The squad then embarked on a four-match winning streak to go top of the group. The crunch match with the Weekend Warriors to decide the semis

lineup went down to the wire with Chris Forbes and captain Vincent Lam putting the team in the last four for the 3rd straight year.

We entered the B semis without three club champions, putting us at a significant disadvantage over perennial rivals Singapore Cricket Club. The team lost 2-1.

“Great effort again from all the players: Will, Devesh, Waldemar, Miles, Mark, Chris, Bernard, Vishnu, Andrew, Ryan, Taco, Shen Yi and Vincent”

It was similar for the C squad. With a squad of 13, the team battled all the way to the top of its group in a three-group C Division. In our first match on a busy weekend on home court, Soo Kui Jien led the team to a 3-0 win over Chinese Swimming Club, and we’d end the round-robin with three wins and two losses.

All in, a great experience with a fantastic bunch of guys.

“As captain I couldn't have asked for more. Massive thanks to En Lai, Lenny, Michael, Kerry, Alex, Han Ming, Eric, Zahid, Roland, Craig and Marcello. Here's to next year, that trophy will be ours!” captain Jien said.

The women’s A Team won two and had some extremely competitive matches in a tough group with SCC, British Club, Sanwa, Singapore Sports Council and NUSS. Thanks Shu-Ling, Yu-Mei; Jackie, Cathy, Lorna, June, Anne, Felicia, Joanne, Nicole, Naomi and Kerry for another year of fun and competitive tennis.

BALUT VS TENNIS VS LAWN BOWLSThe annual Balut versus Tennis and Lawn Bowls was held on 7 November. After a lovely dinner the games began. We played 6 rounds which were all very loud and exciting as everyone tries to get a balut, a full house or a straight. With a little bit of luck and some guidance from the balut players we managed an incredible win. Worth mentioning were Phua Swee Leng with a high score of 140 in his first game and Esther Ling with a total score of 622. However it was the pair of Sachiko Taylor (690) and Lily Lim (672) that clinched it for the tennis section. A big thank you to Sethuraman the balut convenor and his committee for putting this event together. Final scores, Lawn Bowls - 6634, Balut - 6708, Tennis - 6976!

JUNIOR ANNUAL TENNIS TOURNAMENTThe final tournament of The Tanglin Club Junior Tennis Series was held from November 2 – 4. There were 50+ entries covering the singles events for boys and girls. The kids played a round robin format for each age group which meant a minimum of 3 matches per player prior to the semi-finals and finals. Ultimately this resulted in a busy weekend for all and fortunately the rain on Saturday was not too bad to be of any major influence.

Congratulations to ALL the kids who entered and played. Well done to the winners but also, very well done to those kids entering a tournament for the first time. We hope you all had a great weekend of tennis and we’ll see you in 2013 for the new series. Merry Christmas to all and have a safe and happy holiday season.

THE GIFT OF HEALTHWhile health is strictly personal we can help a friend enjoy better wellbeing simply by not putting unhealthy treats in their path. To begin with, avoid giving them more sugar and calories than they need. Surely there is enough cake and sweet confectionery doing their rounds this season! A recent health report questioned if sugar is really as bad as we make it out to be. The answer? “We actually need sugar; it’s our body’s preferred fuel,” said Dr David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. “But we eat too damn much of it.” How true. What about chocolate? It all depends on how it is prepared. The darker the chocolate the better for you, but most chocolates have too much sugar, so again moderation is key. If you plan to give your friends a box of sweets or chocolates, why not think of a healthier alternative?

THE GIFT OF LAUGHTERThe saying ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ is a maxim we could well take heed of. One research found that 15 minutes of laughter a day is as important for the heart as 30 minutes of exercise three times a week! Here are some of its physical benefits: It improves your breathing, makes your blood flow better and boosts your immune system. Laughing heartily is similar to deep breathing in that the stale air in our lungs gets expelled and replaced; this has a cleansing effect. Like exercise, laughter eases blood flow, reducing the likelihood of heart disease; inactivity is often the culprit behind heart problems. Laughter releases serotonins and endorphins, the body’s chemicals that give us a natural high, boosting the immune system and relieving pain. People who laugh a lot on a regular basis have lower blood pressure than the average person. The wellbeing benefits of laughter are that it reduces tension, and lowers anxiety and irritation, which are major factors contributing to depression. How do we give the gift of laughter this season? How about cartoon books or DVDs of favourite comedies as presents.

THE GIFT OF RELAXATIONRelaxing in your own home with a soothing fragrance permeating the room is one of the best ways to deal with stress. Citrus such

as orange and lemon are known for their zesty fragrances, which impart a fresh, lively scent and add a refreshing mood. Similar to these are peppermint and eucalyptus, which uplift your mood with their bracing, healing fragrances. Verbain (also known as verbena) and lavender are florals loved for their sweet but not cloying fragrances. A spritz of these scents will relax you almost immediately. People who are sensitive to florals may find that pine with its woody scent is the perfect ambient fragrance. This season, present your friends with the gift of relaxation by getting them a room fragrance from Spa Botanica. Our made-in-France sprays are organic and come with Ecocert labels. The products contain 15 percent active ingredients that are antiseptic as well as calming.
