The Tanglin Club

Dear Members,

It is with great delight that I pen this message for the December issue of the Club’s Magazine.

The much-awaited Special General Meeting (SGM) was successfully convened on 15 November with 175 Ordinary/Life Members, three Associate Members and one Term Member present.

It was by all measures a successful meeting. Voting by ballot, which was unanimously approved by the Members, enabled the business of the meeting to be completed in just over two hours.

All the 10 Resolutions were passed with the exception of the one on the increase in Planned

Total Membership which nevertheless achieved support from 62% of Members, but, alas, was below the required 75%.

The new rules adopted will avoid the necessity for adjourned meetings while protecting the quorum for rule changes. The stage is set for a new era in the conduct of General Meetings. Members have an automatic right to vote by ballot at every General Meeting. It is envisaged that future General Meetings will be more productive as Members can concentrate on the business at hand rather than on procedural issues.

On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to extend special thanks to all Members who attended and participated in the SGM. My special thanks also go to Members of the General Committee, in particular, Vincent Troy together with his Membership & Rules Sub-Committee, and Dr Richard Tan together with his Development & Planning Sub-Committee, for working diligently on the resolutions.

On a seasonal note, I am pleased to inform Members that with the year-end approaching, we have lined up several exciting Christmas

and New Year events and promotions for Members’ enjoyment.

We kicked off the festivities on 28 November with the traditional light-up of the Club’s Christmas Tree. This year’s donations and gifts-wish Christmas stockings will go to the Children’s Aid Society. We appeal to your kind generosity towards this worthy cause.

And to usher in the New Year, don't miss the Club's two major events. First, there is the ever-popular New Year’s Eve Ball at the Churchill Room on 31 December. The other event not-to-be-missed is the Wild Jungle Safari at the new Wheelhouse, also on 31 December.

May I take this opportunity to wish all Members as well as Management and Staff of the Club a Christmas filled with joy and peace, and a New Year filled with happiness and prosperity.

Dear Members,

The renovated Swimming Pool and Wheelhouse have been in operation for almost a month now.

Feedback on the Wheelhouse has been extremely positive and there has been a very strong increase in patronage from Members, who say they are enjoying the open-kitchen concept as well as the brighter and more cheerful ambience.

We are aware the Wheelhouse acoustics can be improved, and steps are being taken to provide a more enjoyable dining experience for our Members.

For the Swimming Pool, we expect our salt chlorination system to be in place by early next year. There will be no disruption during the change from the current system.

However, the extension of the other children's facilities is facing some delay, due to future road widening plans and a road tunnel which runs underneath those facilities. We are still talking to the Land Transport Authority to finalise any requested changes to our plans.

In other news, work is progressing well on the lift extension to provide access to the upper Car Park levels. Meanwhile, we would like to ask Members to be considerate when they use the Car Park. We have received feedback on cases of indiscriminate parking.

With Members giving the go-ahead, details of the Guestroom renovation are now being finalised. Work is expected to be carried out during March and April next year.

The Festive Season is in full swing

and I end my message on behalf of all my colleagues. We wish all Members a Merry Christmas, good health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.

With warm regards,Herbert HoferGeneral ManagerThe Tanglin Club

GENERAL MANAGER’SMESSAGE

Staff Hong Bao ContributionThe Tanglin Club’s Food & Beverage prices do not include any service charge, and Staff are also not permitted to accept tips and gratuities in any form.

Over the years, the Club has looked to its Members to contribute a Hong Bao (Red Packet) to be shared among the staff annually for the Lunar New Year.

This is in recognition of their

services, and to express appreciation for their efforts made throughout the year. As in past practice, an amount equivalent to one month’s subscription will be debited from Members’ December account.

Members who wish to contribute more or do not wish to contribute, please email the General Manager at [email protected] by 31 December 2010. On behalf of all Staff, we thank you for your generosity.

The General Committee, Management and Staff of The Tanglin Club Wish all Members and their Families

SGM NOTICEFINANCIAL FORECAST FY2010/2011& BUDGET FY2011/2012

Forecast for the year ending 31 January 2011Compared to the last Financial Year (FY), the Club shows slightly lower Food & Beverage (F&B) revenue due to the four-month closure of the Wheelhouse. However, despite the closure, the Club is able to see a stable revenue flow due to the spillover of Members to the Terrace, Tavern and Tangles.

Net Jackpot Takings is lower due to the impact from the two casinos at the Integrated Resorts.

Operating Expenses will be slightly higher than last FY as there is an increase in cost to service providers for all maintenance contracts – e.g. stewarding and night cleaning, laundry, etc. The reduction of Jobs Credit from 12% to 6% from January to March, and to 3% from April to June 2010 ($75,000 this FY vs $521,000 last FY ) is offset by lower staff costs as many vacant positions were not immediately filled.

Other Operating Revenue is higher due to higher Entrance Fee income with more new Members.

The following initiatives were carried out this FY to improve staff productivity:

• Computerised management reporting

• Computerised cheques

• Integrating front-end hotel system to back-end accounting system

• Online monthly collection from Members

• In-house payroll system

Budget FY2011/2012 The Club is expected to record a positive Net Surplus Before Tax of

$1.2 million at the end of FY 31 January 2012.

Comparison with Forecast FY2010/2011 The Club will see a marginal 3% increase in Operating Revenue, from forecasted $19.8 million to

budgeted $20.4 million, largely due to higher F&B revenue of $799,000 (or 9%) with the full operation of the Wheelhouse. This increase is offset by the planned three-month closure of Guestrooms from March to May 2011 and lower rental.

Comforting to note, Members' Subscriptions of $8.2 million were more than sufficient to cover other operating costs and utilities of $7.6 million.

The Jobs Credit amounting to $75,000, will no longer be available next FY. The higher staff cost is also due to budgeted full headcount of 241 staff, coupled with an annual increment in line with the Government's recommendation. Budgeted staff cost also includes one month's performance bonus, plus one month Annual Wage Supplement. The Management expects this to be lower as the Club usually does not operate with full headcount throughout the year due to resignations and time lag in replacement of terminated staff.

Other Operating Expenses is budgeted to increase by $1,030,000 due to:

• Higher cablevision costs resulting from the need to subscribe to both StarHub and SingTel

• Higher repair and maintenance expenses a) Higher IT maintenance for server, RFID at Library, enhanced Virtual Library System, IFCA (integrated e-business applications) and new web page service provider b) Higher building maintenance contract costs

• Higher staff meals catering costs at the renovated staff canteen

Depreciation is expected to be higher due to the full impact of the Wheelhouse/Swimming Pool renovation and other new capital initiatives.

Capital Expenditure Budget Total capital expenditure budgeted amounts to $3.8 million. Major items are as follows:

• Guestrooms upgrade including Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) works estimated at $1.8 million

• Churchill Room renovation at $1.2 million • M&E and Air Conditioning & Mechanical Ventilation Equipment

at the Wheelhouse and Main Kitchen at $250k

• Staff Canteen renovation at $250k

Cash Flow Notwithstanding the above expenditure, the Budget revealed that at the end of FY 31 January 2012, the Club will continue to have a positive cash balance of $13 million (excluding the $10m in Bonds).

The Total Cash & Cash Equivalent is $23 million.

THE TANGLIN CLUB

SGM RESULTS

From time to time, the occasion arises to celebrate a red-letter day. For The Tanglin Club, 15 November was such a day.

I am pleased to report that the Club’s Members voted decisively to approve nine of the 10 Resolutions tabled at our Special General Meeting (SGM). Only one, Resolution 7, regarding the proposed increase in Planned Total Membership to 4,500 Life and Ordinary Members failed; having received a majority in favour (62%), but falling short of the 75% approval level required to pass.

The other Resolutions sailed through with comfortable majority support.

All the Resolutions are important, but two in particular bear mentioning.

First, Resolution 1 (78% in favour), approving an expenditure of $1.8m for a substantial upgrading and renovation of our 16 Guestrooms. This guarantees the future preservation and enhancement potential of a prestigious and crucial high profit centre of our business operations.

Second, Resolution 3 (79% in favour), provides, among other technical issues, for any future Rules changes to be determined by secret ballot, following the initial establishment of a quorum. This has the intended effect of preventing repeated calls for the rechecking of a quorum of Members being physically present in the meeting room throughout the meeting. As an example, although the initial quorum on 15 November was only 94, the actual valid votes cast totalled up to 165 on some Resolutions.

The passing of Resolution 3 has a profound impact for future Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and SGMs, allowing these meetings to be conducted in a fair, democratic and swift manner, unlike some recent examples of time and procedural problems experienced at past AGMs and SGMs.

My congratulations to the hard work of the General Committee for an efficient and relatively short, but highly effective meeting.

RECENT EVENTS

Bollywood Night 23 October at the Churchill Room

Showing off their colourful outfits. Bollywood Night beauties.

Warning: do not try this at home!

Bollywood came to town and Members and Guests had an exciting time play acting in the Churchill Room, which was transformed into a lively set for Bollywood Night.

Everyone came dressed for the part and it was a riot of colours. The ladies were especially charming. You could see many made the effort to scour the shops in Little India to pick the perfect saris, bangles and other accessories. The men were not too shabby either. Many came in their Sunday best. The entertainment acts were top class. The Bollywood drummers, dancers, belly dancers and other performers were captivating. Nobody was shy and there was plenty of audience participation. The volunteer princesses, horses and other characters acted so well, it brought tears of laughter. And not forgetting the food, which was delicious. A variety of Indian signature dishes made sure every appetite was satisfied.

The Tanglin Club has done it again. It was definitely a night to remember! A big thank you to everyone: in particular, the Chef and Staff of the Churchill Room, who made it a fabulous evening.

The wait is over. The Tanglin Club's favourite family restaurant reopened on

4 November at noon, and Members have been flocking back to check out the new

menu and to enjoy the modern, well-lit and welcoming surroundings.

Capacity in the Wheelhouse has been increased. There are now 147 seats indoors and 62 outdoors. The extra seats should provide for a much shorter waiting time, especially on the busy weekends

To offer an interactive dining experience, a glass-enclosed kitchen was created in this well-patronised restaurant. It gives diners a fascinating look into how their meals are prepared. The kitchen prepares the favourite cuisines of Wheelhouse regulars, namely Indian, Oriental and Western fare.

Diners can watch the action in the glass kitchen while helping themselves to the abundant and delicious options at the Salad Bar.

Between the covers of the redesigned menu are old favourites and new options to tantalise the

taste buds... delicious delights such as Wonton Noodles, Hong Kong-style Duck, The Tanglin Club's Oxtail Stew, Coffee Pork Ribs, the famous Chendol dessert, and much, much more.

A Function Room, which can accommodate 40 people, has also been added to the Wheelhouse. The room has a splendid view of the refurbished Swimming Pool, and is excellent for any kind of social gathering – children's birthday parties, family and office events, wedding solemnisations, even graduation dinners. The room set-up is limited only by the imagination!

If you have not visited the Wheelhouse, what are you waiting for?

If you are interested to hold an event in the Wheelhouse Function Room, please contact Letchumi Koolu, Banquet & Sales Manager at 66220434 or email [email protected] for more information.

POT GAMES

POT Games25 September to 9 OctoberThe POT Games is a tradition that dates back to 1977, when a special trophy called the POT, was presented to The Tanglin Club by members of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), to mark the latter's 125th anniversary.

Since then, the two Clubs have met every year for the “battle”of the POT in a variety of sports, ranging from golf, to squash, cricket, lawn bowls and the like.

POT GamesThe Tanglin Club reclaimed the trophy from the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) with a convincing win.

The scores were very close after four games – eight points difference on over 6,800 points! However, The Tanglin Club’s Baluteers concentrated

well and scored big in the fifth and sixth games.

The final tally: The Tanglin Club 10,474, SCC 10,124. Well done, Tanglin Club Baluteers! Monthly CompetitionOverall winner: Mavis Light (637)Highest game score: Ted Hartland (137)Congratulations to the winners!

Annual ChampionshipBy the time you read this, the winner would have been decided. The front-runners as at end-October were: Fatema Sadiq, David Hughes and Bansi Sethuraman. Fatema has a big lead but a high score in the last game by the other two players could bring out some surprises. All the best to the contenders. DARTS

New Kid on the Block is no PushoverThe Darts Section is the youngest Section in The Tanglin Club. It was formed last year when our Club was told Darts would also be part of the POT Games.

Not wanting the Club to be left out, long-time Club Member M C Cheong hurriedly gathered (in reality, arm-twisted) some members and found a spot for a Dart Board to teach Members the game and to practice.

It was not easy convincing Members you do not need a beer belly to play darts. But some are convinced it provides more stability when throwing. In the

space of just a few weeks, the Section took on the mighty Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Team. The effort was not in vain. The Tanglin Club was not totally humiliated and won one match.

This year, Section Members trained with focus while still having fun. We knew our worthy opponents were still the favourites to win and we could only hope to make it tough for them even though the Club was POT Games host.

Section Members are still new to the game and see their participation as a social rather than competitive activity. However, when the first dart was thrown, it became asee-saw battle as both sides were neck-to-neck.

With two matches remaining, our

Ladies Doubles Team comprising Lily Lim and Esther Ling were trailing the SCC Team in the Round-the-Clock match. They did not buckle, held their nerve and powered to an outstanding finish. Kudos to both, and the win clinched the Darts trophy for The Tanglin Club. Apart from Darts, only Balut and Lawn Bowls won their POT Game clashes. Winning is not what counts, and what is more important is the strong friendship with SCC in playing sports and the social networking. However, in all honesty, beating our worthy competitors was certainly sweet.

We look forward to next year when we defend our well-earned crown.

FITNESS

The Gym Team Wishes Everyone

A Joyful & Merry Christmas and a Prosperous & Healthy

2011!

The festive season is around the corner. We all know that regardless of how disciplined we are, we give in to the occasional binge. The following are useful damage control tips.

• Perform a glycogen-depleting workout before your feast. This can be a 30- to 60-minute cardio workout, or try doing as many circuits as possible of eight to 12

repetitions for 20 minutes. Studies seem to suggest that exercising before eating increases metabolic rate and fat oxidation.

• Do not skip meals during the day to “save the calories” for the feast. It is better to eat some high-fibre food and lean protein before your feast. It will keep your hunger in check and prevent you from overeating.

Studies have shown that if you eat a meal consisting of low glycemic index carbohydrates and dietary fibre, you will decrease glucose and insulin responses for the next meal. This is known as the “second meal effect”.

• Choose fewer calorie-laden foods. Sometimes the best thing to do is to eat fewer calories. Reduce the amount of gravy and go easy on the dessert.

Damage Control

Exercise of the MonthTRX Suspension TrainerIn the last issue we talked about the TRX Suspension Trainer for core training. The TRX is very versatile and can be used for core training as well as stretching.

Let’s talk about chain stretching. We know muscles do not work independently to produce functional movement. A group of muscles works in unison to produce a specific movement. We call that group of muscles a chain. Chain stretching simply means stretching the entire chain of those muscles at one time.

Let’s take a closer look at two of

these chains and how to stretch them effectively.

The posterior oblique chain consists of the glute maximus, thoracolumbar fascia and the opposite latissimus dorsi. The posterior oblique chain helps to

transfer force between the lower and upper body. It is paramount in spinal stabilisation during single leg stance. Runners in particular often have tightness in this chain.

The anterior oblique chain consists of the internal oblique and adductor muscles on the same side together with the external oblique muscles on the opposite side. It acts to provide anterior stabilisation of the sacroiliac joint during forward rotational movements in the stance phase of a gait.

FITNESS

DEEP WATER RUNNINGStarting Tuesday, 11 & Thursday, 13 January8.30am to 9.30am at the Swimming Pool

Deep Water Running (DWR) has long been used by physiotherapists as rehabilitation from injury, and by exercise specialists to train and condition their clients for cardiovascular fitness.

When properly performed, DWR is a cool way to stay in shape. It is a form of cross-training, or for someone looking for the benefits of a low-impact aerobic workout. Ideally, DWR is carried out using a flotation belt or other buoyancy equipment such as a “water noodle”.

Here are some tips to remember.

• Try to simulate your natural running style.

• Initiate arm motion from the shoulder and relax your hands.

• Keeps a neutral spine with slight forward flexion, and use core strength to maintain a vertical position.• Reach with leading leg and “pull” through the water, and actively pull trailing leg forward using a full range of motion.

• Keep toes relaxed and focus on your hip and knees.

Keep the following in mind.

• BuoyancyA body immersed to the neck bears approximately 10 per cent of its body weight, 25 to 35 per cent if immersed to the chest

and 50 per cent if immersed to the waist.

• Resistance Increasing the speed of movement in the water will automatically result in increased resistance, leading to higher workloads, increased heart rates and improved cardiovascular conditioning. Avoid compromising your form in order to increase speed.

• SpeedDue to the resistance, you can work different muscles simultaneously with a single exercise: e.g., biceps and triceps. If you use equipment in the Gym, muscle actions change and two separate exercises are needed for biceps and triceps.

2011 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Stairway to Heaven Starting from 1 to 31 January

Break in this New Year at the Gym and challenge yourself to become the next Stairmaster Champion.

GOLF

Chock-full of GoodiesAs the year draws to a close, many may think our Golf calendar does as well, and your Golf Section Committee gets a well-earned rest. Well, that is not the case, and the Committee has been busier than Santa to make sure Members have a good ending to the year, a running start in January and a great programme for 2011.

October – CorrectionWe made an error last month, and the Committee would like to confirm that Adrian Tan is the 2010 Annual Championship Mens’ Best Gross winner.

November – Ryder CupOur final match of the year was at Tanah Merah Country Club. We failed at the very last putt to yank the Claret Cup from the American Club’s grip, with the 10 Tanglin Club pairs losing 5.5 to 4.5. A great game with fun opponents and, in true British style, something we do twice a year. Make sure you book your slot next year.

December – Xmas PartTeeOn Friday, 17 December everyone is invited to wake up early, take a taxi to Marina Bay Golf Course, play 18 holes, hop on an open-top bus back to the Club, enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch, receive a gift from Santa

then go home for a nap. Places will be limited and lunch will be for players only.

January – Captain's CupS T Lee and your Committee will be hosting the Annual Captain's Cup at Singapore Island Country Club Sime Course on Friday, 21 January 2011. A shotgun start will be followed with a Churchill Room Gala Dinner a la Annual Championship, and some surprise entertainment. Sign up early so that you can be there, rather than read about it a month later and wish you had been.

February – Weekend GolfAs some of us have to work during the week, we are now negotiating for a regular Sunday game without having to ask our Members to get a new line of credit.

Programme in 2011Our new budget for 2011 has been approved. With our 310 Section Members' subscriptions and Barclay's generous sponsorship, the Committee has lined up the following programme for next year:

• Afford Members the chance to play at least twice a year.• Play on at least seven of the major courses in Singapore.

• Organise at least one social/ Inter-Club game a month, some of which will be on weekends.• Participate in the quarterly Seven Social Clubs matches.• Stage two majors: the Annual Championship and Captain's Cup.• Organise one overseas and one over-the-Causeway tour.• Subsidise the cost of playing by up to $50 per person.• Provide high quality and fun après-golf food and entertainment at minimal cost.

To run this programme, we need an active and lively Committee. If any Members would like to assist, please email [email protected] of the Sports & Recreation Department.

Finally, to those of you who are unable to make it to the Xmas ParTee, on behalf of Alex Eow, Eugene Lim, David James, Dr Yung Shing Wai, Gopal Banerji, June Seegars, Jürgen Martiens, Ranjan Ramchandani, S T Yeo and myself, thanks for your support in 2010, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and see you on the tee box in 2011!

LAWN BOWLS

Ending 2010 on a High NoteAnother year is almost over, and hundreds of bowls of all colours, sizes and weights have traversed our now well-used green.

We bragged about the success we achieved in 2009, our inaugural year, but we can confidently say that 2010 has been even more successful. With the Christmas Carnival yet to come on 12 December, we shall complete the year on a high note with a large turnout suitably attired in festive style.

So, all of us in the Bowls Section send Christmas greetings to all our readers, their families and friends as well as the staff of The Tanglin Club who make our activities possible. We also hope for a peaceful, healthy and prosperous year ahead.

News from the GreenThe highlight of November was the Inter-Section match with the Tennis Section. It occurred largely because the Tennis players did so well in the Inter-Section Shield Competition and fancied their chances against the real bowlers. The Captain of the Lawn Bowls Section Virginia Longfellow also happens to be the Tennis Convenor, so she was hard pressed to decide which team she would play for in this needle match. Someone was going to be hurt whatever she decided, so the bowlers took the high ground by insisting she represent Tennis. In the event, this arrangement worked well, with each Section winning two rinks with the overall number of shots being 66 to Bowls and 61 to Tennis. Shush, but VL lost her match!

The afternoon was concluded at the

Beer Garden with a good meal washed down with appropriate libations. Thanks go to Social Secretary Devi Hodgkinson and the Sports & Recreation staff.

Club Bowls ChampionshipsThese are progressing well in all disciplines and should be completed before the end of December. As in all knock-out competitions, there have been a few surprises, with many matches being well-laced with excitement. The most dramatic incident occurred in the Singles Championship game between Richard Coventry and Dave Robertson. Dave was one shot from victory at what might have been the final end when Richard touched the jack with his first bowl. Dave responded with his first bowl , finishing a half inch behind Richard’s. Then the next three bowls sat within an inch of one another, so five bowls formed a head worthy of publication in the Photo of the Year Competition!

Unfortunately, no camera was available to record the event. The drama didn’t stop there because the score was now even, and at the conclusion, it came down to a measure for one shot. The measure produced a difference of one millimetre to Richard’s advantage, so he has progressed to the semi-final.

Annual Dinner & Prize PresentationThis will take place on 7 January 2011 and is open to all Tanglin Club Members. Register your interest with the Sports & Recreation Department now.

Whale Shark.

South China Sea Dive TripIn mid-October, Tanglin Club and Blue Barracuda divers went on a five-day live-aboard trip to dive among South China Sea shipwrecks.

The wreck dives were around Pulau Tioman and included the Sara D (Dutch Merchant Ship) and the HMS Repulse (British Battle Cruiser).

It is now whale shark season, and not to be outdone by the recent Tanglin Club Scuba Section trip to Pulau Aur, we sighted a large Eagle Ray, a four-metre baby whale shark, a six-metre juvenile and another whale shark sighting at the surface.

The whale shark is classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It is quite a rare sight. Perhaps these recent sightings may be an indictation that the preservation efforts for this magnificent gentle giant are showing positive signs.

The Chiengmai Cup 2010The Royal Bangkok Sports Club’s Chiengmai Cup ran from 22 to 24 October. Twenty-seven teams competed in this Jumbo Doubles tournament, seven of them from The Tanglin Club.

Our teams were: Shane Hagan and Paul Isted, Al Aspen and Zainal Abidin, Norman and Milton Wee, Peter Rogers and Ashley Gunning, Richard Coventry and Rob Crewdson, Kristen Mansfield and Darcy McColl, and David Palmer and Brian Dickerson.

Our Club results: Al and Zainal were defeated by eventual tournament winners Phil Head and Glenn Hitch from Hong Kong Football Club. Paul and Shane were knocked out in a closely contested match by the Malaysian

pairing of Michael Soo and Ng Jo Wen from Royal Selangor Club who made it through to the final. In the Plate event, Kristen and Darcy reached the finals but could not clinch the win.

Birthday BashWe held a Birthday Bash at the end of last month, funded by voluntary contributions from September and October Birthday Boys and Girls. Not many of the contributors could make it on the day, but the other players certainly appreciated their generosity. Jörg’s FarewellJörg Schweizer relocated back to Germany on 3 November, but not before hosting an evening of food and drinks for his friends in the Squash Section the evening before. Thank you, Jörg! We hope

you find a space for your Farewell Plaque in your new home. We look forward to your next visit. Cosmo ResultsOur Cosmo Team just completed a home and an away victory over the American Club and British Club in consecutive weeks. As Team Captain Gary Matthews noted: “The team is storming, with Vincent Lam and Wong Tien Yin, undefeated so far this season!” Well done, Team! This is a big improvement from last year. TENNIS

The Men’s and Ladies’ Tennis Teams has had one of the most successful seasons in recent years.

With new members Taco Portengen and Justin Crane adding much strength to the squad, the Team scored comprehensive pre-season friendlies over the British Club Bangkok (9-3) and Jurong Country Club (9-2).

The Men’s Team then started its Singapore Tennis Association Inter-Club Doubles League campaign by defeating the teams from NTUC, Burghley Tennis Centre and Singapore Cricket Club, but narrowing losing to The Clay Courts.

A solid victory over NUSS meant the team needed one more win to qualify for the semi-final. The lack of available players and a strong A-grade teenage “lawyer” unfortunately helped the Law Society beat the Tanglin Club 2-1

to book the first semi-final slot. The remaining three teams then had to battle it out in their respective last match for the other semi-final place.

Sanwa Tennis Club, our last opponent and winner last year, held The Tanglin Club Team to 1-1, and the tie was down to our last pair, Bernard Fung and Yen En Lai, who were forced into the third set by the Japanese. The tension was unbearable as they trailed 4-5. Then En Lai saved two match points by smacking consecutive second serves onto the service line, before the pair won the final set 7-5 to claim the last semi-final spot by a whisker, amid feverish cheers from the gallery.

In the semi-final at the Kallang Tennis Centre, the team came up against a strong Savannah Club. Mark Fernandes and Andrew Longfellow were outclassed by its top pair. Bernard Fund and Waldemar Dubaniowski continued their season’s fine form to beat the second pair, but Vincent Lam and Justin Crane could not find a way to blast past its solid third pair net players.

Well done also to C T Khoo, Lim Chin, Devesh Chetty, Daniel Chee and Taco for helping the Team into the semi-final.

In the Ladies’ competition, the team beat Nanyang Technological University, NUSS and Singapore Schools Sports Council to take second place behind unbeaten NTUC which won 15 of 15 matches.

In the semi-final match at Kallang Tennis Centre, which was rain- delayed until the next day, they came up against a young and spirited Singapore Cricket Club side and went out all in straight sets.

Overall, the team of Cho Yu-Mei, Stephanie Cheah, Lee-Yin Salle, Naomi Takeda, Shigeko Ueno, Melissa Lo, Chew I-Jin, Bianca Choy, Nicole Rosenberger, Cathy Leow, Chang Shu Ling and Virginia Longfellow all performed admirably and with great dedication.

Vincent Lam Men’s Captain

We just completed our Singapore Tennis Association Inter-Club Doubles Competition.

We fielded two teams: a Men’s Team in the B Division and a Ladies’ Team in the A Division. Both made it to the semi-finals.

For the Ladies, we had a strong competition over the last couple of months. The matches were held on Saturday afternoons and

Sunday mornings. At the end of the competition, we were Second in our pool. This put us in the semi-final on 30 October against the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC).

After a rain delay, it was decided the match should take place the next day, Sunday. The much younger opponents of SCC were too strong for us on the day, but there is always next year.

I really wish to thank all the players who took part in the competition and made themselves available. The players were: Cho Yu-Mei, Stephanie Cheah, Lee-Yin Salle, Naomi Takeda, Shigeko

Ueno, Melissa Lo, Chew I-Jin, Bianca Choy, Nicole Rosenberger, Cathy Leow, Chang Shu Ling and myself.

We have many events coming up, so please see check at the Sports & Recreation Department for more information and sign up for the 4 December End-of-Year Bash and the trip to Hong Kong, which starts on 10 Dec.

See you on the court.

RECIPROCAL CLUB FEATURE

Probably the friendliest, possibly the busiest and certainly the envy of other Clubs, East India Club in the heart of London’s clubland is full at just over 5,000 members of all ages who range from school-leavers to nonagenarians.

The imposing clubhouse at 16 St James’s Square has been an oasis for its Members since 1849. Once a haunt of the officers of the East India Company and the Armed Forces, membership is now open to any gentleman.

It welcomes Members from a healthy list of Reciprocal Clubs across the world and these international Members are welcomed back each time. The Tanglin Club is a particular favourite and warmly mentioned in the East India Club’s American Bar – the main Bar for Members and Guests.

Located a mere two-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus, East India Club has perhaps the best chef and kitchen of any London club. It is renowned as one of London’s most engaging gentlemen’s clubs and was recently voted favourite overseas Reciprocal Club by Members of the Cosmos Club in Washington DC.

Book ReviewOur Kind Of TraitorBy John le Carré

The unrivalled master of spy fiction returns with a taut and suspenseful tale of dirty money and evendirtier politics.

As menacing and flawlessly paced as The Little Drummer Girl and as morally complex as The Constant Gardener, Our Kind of Traitor is signature le Carré. Perry and Gail are idealistic and very much in love when they splurge on a tennis vacation at a posh beach resort in Antigua. But the charm begins to pall when a big-time Russian

money launderer enlists their help to defect. In exchange for amnesty, Dima is ready to rat out his vory (Russian criminal brotherhood) compatriots and expose the corruption in the so-called legitimate financial and political worlds.

Soon, the guileless couple become pawns in a deadly end game, and the outcome will be determined by the victor of the British Secret Service embroiled in ruthless internecine battles.

DVD ReviewThe Girl With The Dragon TattooStarring Noomi Rapace and Michael NyqvistForty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body is never found, yet her uncle is convinced she was murdered and

the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate the case. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go toprotect themselves.
