General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BBLLOOTT,, ddoo NNOOTT rruubb

• Use ssmmaallll quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to uussee oonnllyy WWOOOOLLSSAAFFEE--aapppprroovveeddpprroodduuccttss. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

CCOOLLOOUURR MMAATTCCHHIINNGGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch produces between500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending onthe creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyerremains constant, and is followed to the letter, ineach separate production the colourreproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to theoriginal or master sample to ensure that thecolour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professional judgementof the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfectcolour matching it is advisable that a single widthbe used in any installation requiring exact colourmatching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travellingin different directions, even though they be fromthe same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SSAAMMPPLLEESSThe samples held by individual retailers may notbe from the same batch as current productionand therefore should be used as a guide and notan exact colour match.

SSHHEEDDDDIINNGGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which iscreated during production when spun yarn is cutfor tuft formation. These fibres fall onto thesurface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff ’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre isonly a small fraction of the total fibre contained inthe carpet.

PPUULLLLEEDD LLOOOOPPSSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuous pileis pulled through the primary backing of thecarpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in aloop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loopsare easily dealt with by trimming the offendingend level with the rest of the pile. They should notbe left as this could result in further loops beingpulled and developing into a ladder.

SSPPRROOUUTTIINNGGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work its wayto the surface and stand proud of the rest of thepile. This is probably due to one end of the tuftbeing longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuftinstead of V shaped. Remedial action merelyrequires that the offending tufts be scissortrimmed level with the rest of the pile. Theyshould never be pulled out.

SSHHAADDIINNGGShading occurs because the pile of the carpet hasbecome crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation of lightand dark patches on the carpet. This will occur onall pile fabrics but can be more noticeable onplainer carpets because the shadows created bypile pressure will not be disguised by a heavypattern or design.

SSTTAATTIICCCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have the capacity tostore it. Static is caused by the build up of staticelectricity upon personnel in a dry environmentand is discharged when a person makes contactwith an object which can conduct electricity (i.e.door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity dependingupon the individual, air humidity and the contactmaterials. Static is more usually associated withsynthetic materials as they do not retain moisturevery well but it can and does occur with wool invery dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction ofmoisture into the room or in situ carpettreatment.

FFAADDIINNGG OONN WWOOOOLLCarpets made from wool can and do fade in use.The degree of fade can vary depending on thecolour chosen and the local conditions to whichthe carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violetlight which is found in daylight, but is acceleratedwhen sunlight shines directly onto the carpet.Thishas the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” thecolour just as exposure to sunlight will lightenhuman hair.Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed tosuch conditions just as you would protect otherfurniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PPIILLEE RREEVVEERRSSAALL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap ofthe carpet changes direction and thus reflects lightat different angles showing the effects of shadingwhich can become permanent. It is also describedas ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpetconstruction be it Axminster,Wilton,Tufted, HandWoven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even CoirMatting. Like shading it can be more apparent onplain carpet because heavy patterns can disguisethe effects. It can occur quite quickly afterinstallation.A tremendous amount of research hasbeen carried out over many years by manyinstitutes to determine the cause of thisphenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturingprocess which can cause or cure this phenomenonand therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. Forfurther information please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

IINNDDEENNTTAATTIIOONNSSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent.Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longerwill be the time for the pile to recover. In the caseof very heavy loads in place for a considerabletime, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pileof the carpet that becomes indented. the underlaywill also indent and the backing of the carpet mayalso distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some lesswell depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spreadthe load and the net result is a larger area of lessdeeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, usingthe test method described in BS 4939 and manymanufacturers will have data on this aspect ofcarpet performance. In this test the carpet isloaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery ismeasured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since thereare so many different underlay’s however, it is veryrare for the recovery from a heavy static load tobe evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning witha rotating brush machine) will speed up recoverybut in the case of serious indentations the use ofan iron and damp cloth or a steam iron togetherwith a blunt darning needle to carefully tease upthe pile can be beneficial. Care must be take notto over wet the carpet, of course.

FFLLAATTTTEENNIINNGGFlattening will occur as a result of traffic whicheventually flattens the pile particularly in the mainareas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greateror lesser degree dependant on the amount oftraffic to which it is subjected and the construction(tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SSOOIILLIINNGGSoiling is usually the result of some local conditionto which the carpet has been subjected to, ormaintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do toprevent soiling in use. There are several types ofsoiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials orany drink which contains sugar, particularly hotdrinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave stickysoap residues in the fibres which can result in thesoiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from the obvioussoiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggestairborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fittedfloorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboardscan be seen quite clearly. Air borne dustsometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, thisis due to the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both in theunderlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited onthe pile much like a filter action. In suchinstallations, the use of a lining paper is essential asa preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise theconsumer when the carpet is measured of anypoorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards andthe consumers responsibility to ensure anyremedial work to seal draughts, is carried outbefore the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaintis to be avoided.

TTUUFFTTEEDD

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBBeerrbbeerr • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

LLeevveell LLoooopp • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

MMuullttii--lleevveell lloooopp • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loopheights to create informal, random textures which are very forgivingfor marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areasand busy family rooms.

CUT PILE FFrreeiizzee • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

SSaaxxoonnyy • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

TTwwiisstt • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

VVeellvveett • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WWOOVVEENN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

AAxxmmiinnsstteerr • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

WWiillttoonn • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

FFllaatt wweeaavvee • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave

is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider

area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

SShhaagg ppiillee • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as afibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellentappearance retention properties. The best wool for carpetproduction is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds foundin Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both BritishWool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulkyand resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades tocarpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter andparticularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the twowithin a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfectqualities for carpet.

110000%% wwooooll oorr 8800//2200 –– 8800//1100//1100 wwooooll rriicchhWool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superiorstrength and does not need other fibres to improve itsperformance. However manufacturers choose to use syntheticfibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These includefibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability andcost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpetswhich will perform well in the home.

TTHHEE BBEENNEEFFIITTSS OOFF WWOOOOLL CCAARRPPEETT

PPrraaccttiiccaallStrong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performanceover many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lastingdurability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so thatpile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading arereduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soilingdue to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as aresult additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuumingthe carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbentcloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

CCoommffoorrttSoft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort andwarmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retentionand energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the homeagainst echo and room to room noise transfer.

SSaaffeettyyFire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rateand tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets manysafety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured incontract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor whichprotects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

IInntteerrnnaall EEnnvviirroonnmmeennttIndoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physicaland chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere inthe home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it whenthe atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbingairborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dustuntil vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in theatmosphere.Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote thegrowth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EEccoo//EEnnvviirroonnmmeennttaall Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool isboth 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part ofanimal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply ofwool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpetproduction.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will producenitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibrethat has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life CycleAnalysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard forBritish Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measuredagainst man-made fibres.

• Check out the product ranges offered including theown-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit yourflexibility to run your business the way you want.

Why join?Buying groups have been a highly successful feature ofthe floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, givingindependents the extra edge they need to competeeffectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one ofthe several buying groups which operate in our sectorand the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident,the resistance to the buying group concept among non-members appears to be centred on fears ofsurrendering some control to a committee – and mostparticularly compromising long-established relationshipsand negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer sellingacross a broad range of products is likely to improvemargins within a buying group – but you don’t need aleap of faith to join up.Ask the buying groups for answers...

HHooww tthhiicckk?? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

UUnnddeerrllaayy

SSppoonnggee rruubbbbeerrThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PPUU ((ppoollyyuurreetthhaannee)) ffooaammPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

CCrruummbb rruubbbbeerrFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

LLaammiinnaattee uunnddeerrllaayyThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CCoommbbiinnaattiioonnA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

UUnnddeerrfflloooorr hheeaattiinngg uunnddeerrllaayyAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Best-selling products at every price point

Large group stock-holdingExtensive tufting expertise Effective service systems Fast delivery fleet

As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is

simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of

price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely

on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will

respond to.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company,

Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a

modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created

a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet

and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully

on line.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of

square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors

– stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and

many others.

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control

the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products

that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing

also means they can manage stock more closely and respond

to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready

for dispatch.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across threedepots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicatedfleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usuallywithin 24 hours.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio ofproducts matched to the diverse needs of different customergroups, rooms styles and performance requirements. To give a sharper, luxurious pile surface the collection is triple sheared and like many of its otherwool twist qualities,West Country is branded under the British Wool Crook mark, as well asbeing available in both 4m and 5m widths. The palette of 15 natural flecked heather shadesincludes a core of the ever popular beiges and neutrals as well as some new muted natural tonesof purple, pink and grey (Mauve, Redwood & Gunmetal).

Designers for winders

Stairrods (UK) has introduced the new Universal stair rodbracket, which is designed for fitted and runner carpets onwinder stairs.Typically, standard brackets do not fit flush to theedge of a runner on winder steps, whereas the Universalbracket, which attaches to the riser only, can be simply turnedon its single screw fixing, for a neat, smart finish.

The Universal bracket is made from solid brass and is availablein seven finishes: polished, satin and antique brass, black, chrome, satin nickel and pewter, and is suitable for both stair runnersand fitted carpets. The new brackets are sold in pairs and aredesigned for any circular rods, up to 1⁄2” (12.5mm) diameter.

Previously, fitting stair rods to a winder invariably causedproblems, as a standard two screw, hinged bracket, whichattaches to tread and riser, cannot be fixed so that it follows theedge of the carpet, often resulting in one end of the brackethaving to be tucked under the edge of a runner, or ugly, irregular gaps between carpet and bracket. The new Universalbracket provides a smart solution every time, whatever themake of stair rod.

The Universal bracket will be on the Stairrods (UK) stand.

Harrogate starts on its £13m future

A ‘Ground Breaking’ ceremony of the new exhibition halls at Harrogate International Centre (HIC)by the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Councillor Bill Hoult marks the official start of buildingwork on a £13 million expansion on the site.

Stuart Quin, HIC Director: “I am delighted to be a part of this exciting regeneration programme andthe benefits of this new scheme will be far reaching for all concerned. This growth will increasecapacity and allow for bigger events to expand, whilst improving the flexibility of the existing facilities.

“We will now be able to offer not just additional exhibition space but spaces capable of hostinglarger experiential events, banquets, corporate productions and product launches than ever before. This will in turn enable us to attract and host an even wider range of national and internationalevents benefiting the whole town.”

The development includes two new event halls totalling 3,300 square metres. Providing an extra 20%capacity, and with its improved flexibility, it will allow multiple events to run alongside each other.

New features also include a banqueting facility for up to 1500 guests, an underground car park and, most noticeably, an enlarged and prominent spectacular new entrance.

Harrogate Flooring Show organisers David Wildman and Wendy Adams were at the ceremony withWendy (pictured right) lending a hand to get the building works underway.

The Centre will also achieve the goal of a BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) ”excellent rating” throughthe inclusion of such things as a green roof; use of sustainable fuels to propel heating and electric requirements; rainwater harvesting and othersimilar measure to minimise any environmental impacts.

This development, which is being constructed by the Wates Group, will enhanceHarrogate’s international reputation as a leading destination for events, whilst visuallycomplementing the town’s reputation for beauty. The exterior of the existing site (The Kings Road Side) will also be enhanced by a tree-lined boulevard entrance and avibrant outdoor covered ‘piazza style’ dining area.

This development is scheduled to complete by autumn 2011.

The development has been supported by Yorkshire Forward, the regional developmentagency, which has part funded the £13 million expansion plan along with HarrogateBorough Council.

Attending the event, Linda Pollard, Deputy Chair of Yorkshire Forward said: “We haveinvested in these improvements to Harrogate International Centre so that its facilities cancontinue to compete with other conference centres both nationally and internationallyand bring conferences and events to the region. It will help safeguard the substantialbusiness tourism economy which has long been a staple feature of the Harrogate districtand raise the profile of Yorkshire and Humber as the place to do business.”

Breaking new ground! Wendy Adams of theHarrogate Flooring Show team gets stuck in.

“This is a great day for Harrogate and ensures that the flooring industry is going to benefit from

Inspired by nature

Ecovise introduces ‘Eco home’ concept with environmentally friendly 100% natural carpets in plains, stripes and runners. These exclusive designs in luxurious velvet finish are beautifully created to caterfor design-savvy consumers.

It is unique and rare that a carpet is made 100% with all natural material like undyed woollen yarnwoven in cotton and jute and with backing of natural latex. All of these materials arebiodegradable and come from sustainable sources. It is a natural advantage as thebeautiful designs in stripes and subtle neutral tone colours are created with aconscience that it has minimal impact on environment.

Ecovise say their carpets are entirely different from any other woollencarpets made today that claim to be natural. They maintain that many ofthese carpets contain a synthetic material whether it be on the yarn(chemical dyes, moth proofing, stain resistant) or synthetic backing.

The company commented: “It is a common practice by a lot ofcompanies now days to do “green washing” by claiming to producecarpets by recycling the non renewable plastic bottles. We feelsynthetics are not sustainable and therefore not eco friendly.Wetherefore only use naturally pure material in our carpets thusmaking them truly environment friendly.”

Ecovise is keen to expand business and are looking forward to meeting new contacts at the Harrogate Flooring Show.

The much anticipated consolidation of the Europeanflooring industry has taken a major step forward with theannouncement of Balta’s acquisition of Domo Floorcoverings.

The acquisition, expected to be approved by the competition authoritieslater this month, will strengthen Balta’s market leading position by addingDomo’s flooring turnover of c. £150m (€170m) to create a group with total sales approaching £600m (€700m).

While strengthening Balta’s existing position in broadloom carpet, theacquisition will add carpet tiles and needlefelt to the Balta portfolio andextend their polypropylene yarn and fibre capability.

Jules Noten, CEO Balta Group: "This is a splendid opportunity for us. Untiltoday Balta had no activities related to carpet tiles and needle felt. This willopen up a whole new world of products and distribution channels.

“For broadloom carpet, our residential customers have chosen collections byBalta, ITC and Domo Floorcoverings and with these various collections wecan tap into the strengths and geographical complementarity of each ofthese business units, without neglecting to harvest the potential synergiesoperationally."

The Stocklists reported at the end of last year that Domo would be a likelycandidate after Balta issued an invitation to its competitors to join forces toovercome the economic downturn that has placed serious pressure on theviability of key companies in the sector.

At the time, Geert Vanden Bossche of Balta said there was a ‘perfect storm’of economic factors operating against the sector in Europe. “It is a veryserious situation and we believe some consolidation is needed. We havesent out a signal that we are interested in joining forces,” he said in November.

Balta is a major supplier to Carpetright amongst others and have admittedthat their sales growth is at the expense of margins as the mix has movedto lower average prices, combined with exchange rate issues.

The acquisition will add more than 700 people to Balta’s workforce tocreate a headcount of about 4,000 in plants mainly in Belgium but also inTurkey and the US.The company has said “employment will be sustained”after the move. Jules Noten added: "Balta Group shall adapt the organizationof operations in order to focus in the most efficient manner on the bestpossible product-market combinations and the implementation of synergies.”

Depth of choice and prompt service are two of the mainstays ofwholesale flooring suppliers, which have evolved through the needof retailers to offer these same facilities to their customers.Stocklists spoke to a number of established wholesale businessesto see how their operations had developed in recent years.

Founded by Brian Boocock in 1978 in a small unit near Warrington,Supertex Furnishing operated to a simple, initial business model. Rolls ofclearance products were sourced from manufacturers of carpet and vinyl onthe principle of 'stack it high and sell it cheap'.As the business expanded, larger warehouse premises were purchased in Leyland Lancashire.

Supertex is now run by Brian'sson, Haydn Boocock and AndrewBramall, offering over 85 regularcut length ranges and providing anext day delivery service to mostNorth West regions, plus regulardeliveries to Stoke on Trent,Birmingham,West Yorkshire andIreland. The company states it isone of the North West's leadingindependent wholesalers, providing an efficient service onquality products whilst remainingcompetitive in the market place.Clearance products are stillavailable, but its cut length servicecontinues to expand and remainsthe focus for the future.

STS Flooring Distributors has been established for 45 years, with five depotslocated in Orpington, Croydon,Watford,Thame and Cambridge, coveringLondon and the South East, South of England, South Midlands, west toGloucester and Avon and east into East Anglia, offering next day delivery ofstocked products.Whilst it is widely known for its contract flooringexpertise, its procurement of Bodigians three years ago has allowed STS toexpand into the retail market. The company now stocks leading brandsincluding Cormar, Lano,Telenzo Ball & Young and Interflor, as well as allaccessories.

Solent Wholesale reports it has been one of the largest independentdistributors of floorcoverings in the South of England for some time andcontinues to be family owned and run. Now under the control of the secondgeneration, Claire Crooks and Simon McHale have learnt the business fromthe bottom rung of the ladder. This has given them a good understanding ofwhat customers want. The core of the business is middle to top enddomestic product, especially plain 80/20 twists.

The company states its ranges have been increasingly supplemented with wellmade, competitive mid-to-budget priced products to meet the demands ofthe current economic situation. Spare capacity in Solent Wholesale's new,purpose-built warehouse allows it to take advantage of special offers andpromotions which can then be passed on to customers.

Solent states that retailers have become increasingly aware of the disparity inprices being asked by large wholesalers, compared with those of independentdistributors, with the availability of fewer products making comparisons

easier. The challenge of the recession for the company has been to findthe right products, at the right price and deliver them on time. 'Ouraim is simple – we want to be the best at what we do,' said SimonMcHale. Solent will be hosting an Open Day on the afternoon ofThursday 16th September, to which all customers are invited.

Rackhams is another wholesaler that has had to tackle the recession, choosing an ambitious programme of product development that hasvirtually involved changing its entire product portfolio over the last 24months. It is approaching its tenth anniversary since absorbing theformer E G Rackham & Co Ltd and service continues to be of greatimportance, irrespective of fluctuations in sales volumes, it states.Next day delivery and best sample solutions continues to be offered to all customers, with ongoing product improvements for both retailersand contractors.

Its mainstay continues to be cut length broadloom and carpet tiles, with high quality laminate a more recent addition. The companyemploys both internal and external sales staff to provide independentclients with a comprehensive service. Its most recent addition has beenthe Carpets of Simplicity range of inexpensive product, extending itscoverage to all price points. 'A balance between service and fair pricingare, we feel, the key to maintaining our profile and presence in themarket place,' the company states.

Faithfull Floorcoverings has a respected reputation within both retailand contract sectors and has recorded considerable activity recently, with the opening of a Walthamstow warehouse and trade counter, along with the moving of its Dartford trade counter to largerpremises, with both sites strategically situated for easy access to theM25 and London for customers that wish to collect their goods.

Axminster is ambitious. The company is on a mission to re-inventitself from quality traditionalist to quality trendsetter and ismarching forward on all fronts – product development, consumerpromotion and retailer support.

“We are being aggressive and we are pushing for a substantial step forward inmarket share. We have to get this right” says Steve Upperton, sales director(pictured above right with the new POS displays).

The programme of product development is well established. Already, thecompany reports that 25% of its sales today come from products that did notexist two years ago.

The major launch of Princetown is an example.“I can’t remember the last timewe did something this big and we are really pleased with the reaction.” says Steve.

There are 14 new axminsters across the ranges in three designs – elegantPicasso, ethnic Matisse and arty Mondrian.

The campaign is centred around the new brand launched in 2009 when thelogo was given a fresh look but critically the marketing strapline was changedto Natural. British. Beautiful. “We want to change perceptions,” says Steve.“Axminster has immense recognition for quality but we want to ensureAxminster is synonymous with ‘design’ rather than with ‘old-fashioned’.

“This won’t be achieved in a three month campaign. It is a long-term objective butwe would like to think we have shifted perceptions in three years time,” he said.

Steve likens the Axminster brand to AGA cookers or Jaguar – quality Britishproducts that have a great heritage but have re-invented themselves to remaincontemporary and relevant.

“We have to make the flooring market fashionable – it has tobe more about design and colour and less about price,” he says.

The announcement of a consumer advertising campaign lastmonth is another angle of attack. The campaign will be usinghigh quality roomset photography to let the product valuesspeak for themselves in ten of the leading home interest titles– a target audience of eight million readers.

Retailer involvement is seen as vital to the development of thebrand. “The retailer is key.You can do all the right things butconsumers are easily confused by carpet – they need adviceand support,” says Steve.

Axminster worked closely with retailers while developing thenew displays and trialled the concept in 22 stores – theobjective was to ensure they were “easy to sell from”. Aftersome further tweaks, the company is about to start rolling outthe finished product.

“The store experience is vitally important in the wayconsumers see the brand,” says Steve. And he intends thatthey see more and more of it!

“When our vehicle arrives on site we can do the whole thing,” saysdirector Ian Peers. “We’ve designed and manufactured the units, weinstall them, we load them with sampling – and we go back to keepthem up-to-date.”

Attention to detail and new developments are key to success in thiscompetitive sector. For example,Triple King have just introduced aspeedy service to turn laminate or flooring planks into easy-to-useswatches, complete with printed information and graphics.

This full service approach has been welcomed by manufacturers andTriple King works with leading companies such as: Georgian,Victoria,Manx, Fells Carpets, Edel Telenzo, Cormar, MCD, Calverts, United Carpetsand Cavalio.

The company’s business is based centrally in Bradford where the 40,000square feet operation centre includes design, manufacturing and storage. The company offers lecterns, waterfalls, wall systems and so on but it hasbeen their creative response to custom design projects that has earned itso many supporters.

“We know floor space is at a premium in store and our job is to makeevery inch of a sales unit work hard for the manufacturer and the retailerwith maximum appeal to the consumer,” says Ian. “We bring a lot ofexperience and, equally, a lot of new ideas to every project.”

Peter Kimmins, General Sales Manager at Georgian Carpets can confirm.“We like working with Triple King. We’re very happy with the style butwe also appreciate the durability we get from their units which is soimportant,” he says.

T 01274 582056 www.triple-king.co.uk

Triple King is at the heart of a quiet revolution that is transforming thesales environment for thousands of flooring stores across the UK.Effective point-of-sale display has become an art, a science and a service.

Retail ‘real estate’ is the buzz word for manufacturers who increasingly regard point-of-sale as oneof the most critical aspects of their approach to the market. But it’s an expensive investment thatmanufacturers can’t afford to get wrong.

But good news in a recent survey in The Stocklists revealed 65% of retailers thought POS wasgetting better and merchandising services were getting smarter.

That’s the difference with Triple King, the brand name of Thomas Hopkinson. Not only has theirdesign approach to presenting carpet and smooths samples been getting increasingly stylish and innovative, they’ve wrapped up the whole merchandising service into a package that cantransform a store.

While the economy is still reporting slow growth in the UK,one company has seen a significant upturn with more than500 new customers in the past year.

Interfloor has invested heavily in a campaign to build awareness of thebenefits of sponge rubber and crumb rubber underlay. The Campaignfor Real Underlay has been active through the trade press, directmarketing, email, web and point of sale. It has been highly successful inpromoting the benefits that rubber underlay offers in terms ofconsumer preference, performance and enhanced “sellability.”

“As a result, we’ve seen an increase in customers buying rubberunderlay and the growth in some of our premium products, such asTredaire Colours Red and Duralay Kensington Deluxe, has beenoutstanding,” says sales director Gary Cowley.

“Another reason for the company’s recent success is that they are helpingthe retailer to increase their sales by selling more products to consumerswho wouldn’t normally have purchased an underlay. “Rarely does theconsumer ask for an underlay product by name, although they do havesome recognition of the brands, especially Tredaire and Duralay. We’veprovided point of sale stands, as part of our Profit Ability programme, sothat consumers can stand on the underlay and feel for themselves thequality and the difference which a superior product adds to a new carpet.

“This not only makes customers more likely to buy a new underlay, butalso more likely to buy a better quality product.”

Interfloor has worked with hundreds of retailers, via the Interfloor ProfitAbility programme, to help them sell more underlay. More than 80%

have increased volumes by 10% or better – some by as much as 100%.

“At Interfloor we can help retailers sell more underlay and get bettermargins in these tough times. Of course the recession has affected thevolumes which retailers have been able to sell, but by offering a betterselection and selling in the benefits to the consumer, we are starting tosee a real difference in volumes– plus the consumers love the products.”

And if that wasn’t enough, the company exports to over 70 countriesas far afield as Russia, Africa, the Middle East and China. Interfloorrubber underlay is the preferred choice of many of the world’s leadinghotel groups including Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Intercontinental,Hyatt and Jumeirah.

“They will only choose the very best and we’re delighted that theychoose Interfloor. One of the most high profile customers includes thelatest major five star hotel in Dubai, The Atlantis, with around 1,500rooms, which has more than 100,000 square metres of Interfloorrubber underlay. But we had already supplied underlay for the sevenstar Burj Al Arab, and the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. We are also replacing underlay in all of the mosques in Abu Dhabi.”

At the same time Interfloor has been beefing up its PU capacity. “Ourrole is to manufacture and market the underlay products that customersneed. There has been an increase in the demand for PU and we haveresponded in a big way. Our manufacturing plant in Dumfries hasintroduced a new, state-of-the-art line to produce our PU. We’veincreased our range of Tredaire PU underlays to eight, the latest of which,Tredaire Contract 9, is an ultra high density 9mm domestic underlaysuitable for double stick applications. We’ve overtaken the number twomanufacturer and at our current rate of growth we expect Tredaire tobecome the number one brand for PU in the next 12 months.”

But the story isn’t just about underlay. Interfloor also provides morethan 800 flooring accessory products including carpet gripper, profiles, adhesives, tapes and fitting tools. Interfloor is the only manufacturer ofcarpet gripper in Europe, through its Gripperrods product. “And wehave also invested heavily in this product too.” said Gary. “We havechanged and improved the product’s look and quality so that it is nowthe best performing gripper product in the UK. gripper due to its superior strength and consistency. There iscompetition from plywood made from poplar but we don’trecommend this as it’s softer and more prone to “bowing”.”

Interfloor, the only wholly UK-owned underlay manufacturing company, has also made customer service a priority. “One reason why thecompany is going from strength to strength is because we listen to whatour customers are telling us and then act on it. We identifiedopportunities to improve the speed and responsiveness of our deliveryservice, to extend our product range and to provide enhancedmarketing support to our customers; ” says Cowley.

“We have made significant improvements to our customer offering, andthat includes a faster response time to orders, greater flexibility, and anupdated fleet. All of our tractor units are now less than a year old, withmost of the trailers having also been replaced. With fuel efficiencies, lower emissions and a tracker system to enable timed routes, deliveriescan be accurately timed to maximise convenience for our customers.

“Interfloor is a very solid business, built on many years oftrading, but we actually care about theproducts we supply and about theservice we give to our customers.Customer service is of paramountimportance, as is the range of productsand offering value for money.”

Gary has been at Interfloor, andpreviously Tredaire, for eleven yearsand he sees the improvements inmarketing support and customerservice. “We’ve listened and we haveworked hard to improve our service. We believe that we offer more valueto our customers because we cangive them the brands, products, marketing support andcustomer service to help theirbusinesses thrive. At the end of the daythat’s what really matters.”

“We expect Tredaire to becomethe number one brand for PUin the next 12 months”

A new report from MTW Research has found that theunder floor heating industry experienced unprecedentedgrowth towards the end of 2009, as the market becameincreasingly reliant on smaller projects within the domesticmarket. In light of these developments Ambient Electrical, are offering their industrial forecasts for the next six months.

The new survey found that 53 per-cent of under floorheating suppliers reported growth in excess of 10 per-centin the last quarter of 2009, with 75 per-cent of companiesin the sector having ‘excellent’ or ‘exceptional’ credit rating.

David Goose from Ambient Electrical, the leading providersof electric under floor heating, said, “Most suppliers havefound that it is essential to shift their focus to maintainsales, and many under floor heating specialists are placing anincreased focus on the issue of energy efficiency and thebenefits of using under floor heating compared totraditional methods of heating.

“As the rentals market becomes increasingly buoyant, underfloor heating suppliers are finding that many landlords areinvesting in under floor heating systems as a way of makingtheir properties stand out from the crowd, and as a result, many savvy businesses are tapping into this new targetaudience.

“In the past, estate agents advised property investors tosplash out on bathrooms or kitchens, but today the focus ison cutting edge technology and under floor heating.”

Radiators have been the heating method of choice formany years, but under floor heating is certainly gaining inpopularity, with more prospective buyers placing suchsystems on their ‘wish list’.

Mr Goose added, "The market will certainly remain strongfor the rest of 2010 as more and more homebuilders, landlords and investors realise the selling power associatedwith under floor heating systems- now is a great time forthose within our industry.”

Holiday grin and tonic

Tenerife provided the perfect tonic for former carpet and furniture sales employees this summer – thanks to holiday grants from theFurnishing Industry Trust (FIT, formerly the FTBA).

Former furniture salesman and general manager Charles A’Court enjoyed a 10-night cruise to the popular holiday island with wife Elsiethanks to a grant of nearly £2,000 towards the cost of the trip. Also, retired carpet salesman John Easton, 65, was able to enjoy a seven nightstay at the island’s Playa De Las Americas resort with wife Valerie thanks to the help of a £1,000 grant towards the cost of their holiday.

“The Canaries are clearly the place to go this summer!” said FIT chief executive Charles Kerrigan. “Both Charles and John worked in thefurnishings industry for many years before retiring and have had health issues in recent years. They both needed a break away from it all andFIT has been pleased to help them on their way.”

John retired through ill health in 2004 and last year underwent major spinal surgery. He said: “It seems a long time since Val and I went on aholiday and it was lovely for us to get away and relax after the ups and downs of the previous year.”

Yes you canyon!

David Worthy is a well known manufacturers agent in the North East of England where he has been employed to represent several highprofile companies over the last 25 years. Before becoming an agent David worked as a representative for Gilt Edge Carpets and as aregional sales manager with Crossley Carpets.

However in January 2010 life changed for David as he was diagnosed after a very short illness with a cancerous bowel tumour, whichwould certainly have proven to be life threatening had it not been removed by immediate major and extensive surgery. This wassuccessfully carried out during early February. After long and extensive care David has recovered remarkably well. Apart from his regularseries of scans and tests a great deal of David’s recovery especially his mental state with regard to the future has been attributed toMacmillan Nurses and his local Marie Curie Care Centre.

As a way of showing his gratitude and as a way of “putting something back” David has enrolled on a most worthwhile venture in spring of2011. In aid of his local Marie Curie Care Centre he is endeavouring to trek for what will be in excess of 40 miles through The GrandCanyon U.S.A. He is hoping to raise in excess of £3000 by this venture.

David is appealing to any carpet colleagues or companies who would gladly contribute towards his ambitious trek by donating towardswhat is hoped you will agree is a ‘Worthy’ cause!

Life cycle by Cormar

Cormar Carpets has raised £1,000 for The Christie cancer centre with a charity bikeride when six employees from the company took on the challenge of the 60-milebike ride to raise funds for the Manchester-based centre which treats over 40,000patients a year. They completed the Manchester to Blackpool route in four and a halfhours.

Money raised by the Cormar team will go towards The Christie’s ongoing research, treatment and additional patient services. This includes plans for a new treatmentcentre to diagnose people more quickly and improve treatment services.

Sponsors of the team included Lancashire DAF, PPS Commercials,Transline and SystemHygiene who provided support and equipment.

“We take part in numerous fundraising events each year and with a focus on staff wellbeing,The Christie bike ride was the perfect way tocombine our love for fundraising and fitness. A number of employees cycle to and from work and jumped at the chance to take part,” said CraigMarshall, logistics manager at Cormar Carpets.

“Some of the team’s friends or family have been affected by cancer in some way and with The Christie’s Centre being so close to home, this bikeride was something we felt extremely passionate about.”
