Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for generalhousehold use. Although they may clean the carpetsatisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problemssuch as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damageto the pile or backing of the carpet.

It is best to engage the services of aprofessional carpet & upholstery cleaningcompany. To get a really expert job doneentrust the work to a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, havebeen in business for a considerable

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

INSTALLATIONSWe recommend that all carpets are laid inaccordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of whichcan be obtained from your library or HMSO)or as per National Institute of Carpet Fittersinstallation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) forfurther information.

Flooring factsheet

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

Cormar steps to heaven

Luxury with a tough tufted

The Mohawk Group’s Mohawk International range of residential carpets areproving a big hit among consumers and retailers alike including the luxuriousKnightsbridge (pictured left).

Offered in both plain and berber styles, Knightsbridge is made from 100%Durasoft nylon for a soft to the touch feel that also provides performance forthe busiest areas of the home, making this long cut pile style suitable forbedrooms, living rooms and everywhere in between.

Using the flexibility of Knightsbridge’s eight plain colours and five berbercolours, homeowners can use the carpet to add variety to carpet within thehome, while also ensuring that performance is not sacrificed.

The Durasoft nylon featuring in Knightsbridge has a look more in keeping withwool carpets, thanks to some clever fibre characteristics, but it comes withoutthe maintenance drawbacks and with a brilliance and saturation of colour thatis virtually unparalleled.

Coping well with daily life, Knightsbrisdge is an ideal ‘whole house’ carpet asHoward Lindsay, Sales Manager, residential division explains: “Knightsbridge is apremium tufted carpet that uses nylon to provide excellent performance levels.Commonly used in high traffic office environments, nylon is ideal for householdslooking for a tough and hardwearing carpet. However, tough and hardwearingdoesn’t have to mean hard to the touch and Knightsbridge has a beautifully softtexture which many would have trouble separating from wool carpets.”

All colours and styles within the tufted Knightsbridge collection are available ina 3.66m width with a pile weight of 65oz.

Tel. 01480 479830 www.themohawkgroup.com

The dreamy collection, available in a 4m width only, is ideal for bedrooms andat £16 per sq m represents great value for money, making it affordable for mostfamilies or first time buyers on a restricted budget.

But it is the palette of 12 fashionable plain and flecked colours which looks setto make Heavenly a best seller. Soft and gentle pastels, such as Silver Cloudand peachy Starburst, add a fresh modern touch to the bedroom whereas thecore of natural beiges including Cherub and Harvest Moon bring a classic feel.

“While colour is making a welcome return, people still want a calm, unclutteredneutral look in their bedroom,” said David Cormack, marketing director atCormar Carpets. “In Heavenly we believe we have come up with a balancedcollection of natural creams and browns as well as subtle shades such asmoody blues and delicate greens that are the perfect combination for a serenebedroom.”

British Wool at Domotex 2009The environment and 100%natural carpet yarns will takecentre stage for British Wool atDomotex 2009.

Showcasing ‘Shades of Nature’ – the latest BritishWool yarn innovation presentation box at theevent, the BWMB is bringing their successful100% natural tufted carpet yarn collection to aneven bigger audience.

“We have already had enormous interest in thiscollection of British breed and blended yarns. Butwe are seeing extraordinary level of interest fromthe international market, which has taken theenvironmental agenda on with force during thelast eighteen months,” explained Richard Poole,European Business Manager at the BWMB.

The tufted carpet yarn collection features ninebreed type yarns and three blended yarns. The

yarns are undyed and can be seen in their mostunadulterated yarn form.

Richard explained, “This innovative tool is aboutenabling people to understand the potential ofusing a particular breed or type of wool toenhance their product range.

“We know the eco trend is gaining pace, particularly in the commercial sector and the importance of developing product to meet stringent buyer specifications thatdemand the product content and supply are verifiable and transparent to eco scrutiny, is being driven forward rapidly.

"Regulatory compliance is undoubtedly looming in the contract markets. By forging forward with our environmental agendaBritish Wool is not only responding to the marketing trend for the environment but also helping our licensees prepare forforthcoming regulatory change and ultimately achieve greater customer satisfaction.”

British Wool can be found in Hall 5, stand F38. The stand operates as a mini business centre and always provides a usefulmeeting place. “We attend Domotex to promote British Wool and to support our licensees and textile industry partnersthat visit but do not exhibit. It is a very important gathering of the worldwide industry and we hope that the UK tradewill make the effort to attend.”

The general carpet trading may not bestrong but the British Wool Prize Drawpromotion is continuing to attractconsistent entries and with eightweekend breaks for two at a sumptuousMarriott hotel as prizes, it is clearlyproving an enticing promotion.

“This is a great prize for a carpet consumer and wesuspect that the retailer likes it too and so those retailersthat are using it as a promotional tool are having a reallypositive response. Some prize draws are very throwawaybut the consumer has definitely not discarded this one.

“Perhaps the fact that short breaks are now considered abit of a luxury has something to do with it – as the creditcrunch continues to bite, “ said Tim Booth, productdevelopment manager.

The promotion runs until the end of March and winnerswill be drawn during April. Winners and retailers will befeatured in this column.

The British Wool stand will have a distinctly British theme at Surfaces2009 - the North American flooring show held annually in Las Vegas. This year the BWMB is supported by a strong group of UK manufacturersincluding Brintons, Axminster Carpets, Cavalier Carpets and the designerflatweave manufacturer Fleetwood Fox.

Choosing a bold Union Jack theme with highly inspired exhibition panels -designed by the British Wool in-house creative team, the BWMB has chosento define the British Wool brand and harness the strength of American interestin all things British.

“The BWMB stand will exhibit an excellent range of British Wool carpet fromleading manufacturers creating a strong stand with plenty to offer the USvisitor,” said Tim Booth, product development manager at the BWMB.

“Our message is simple - ‘British Wool is excellent for carpet’. The Union Jackflag is integral to our Shepherd’s Crook logo and our British manufacturers areproud of it. Certain international markets respond well to British origin and itis important to use all our benefits to the full advantage of our manufacturingpartners, which have chosen to support our US marketing programme.”

Fuelling the growing demand for new and interesting carpet styles for the home,Axminster Carpets’ latestaddition, Simply Natural Stripe, offers another example of a quality driven, fashion-led range that is designed tomeet flooring trends head-on.

First introduced to visitors at the National Floor Show, Harrogate, in early September, the new Stripe Collection isa stunning take on the already established household favourite Simply Natural.

Simply Natural Stripe comes in six colour variations and combines contrasting pinstripes with a natural backdroptone. The multi-level loop pile construction, where the contrasting darker tone is set deep, adds a textural elementto the design and underlines the fine attention-to-detail synonymous with the Axminster Carpets name.

Simply Natural Stripe utilises Axminster Carpets’ unique six-ply Cable-Tec yarn, where finely spun singles aretwisted together to make superior two-ply yarn before three ends of two-ply are cabled together to produceone of the most resilient carpet piles in production. Manufactured from Axminster Carpets’ Home Spun 100%pure new wool and with superb durability and appearance retention, Cable-Tec possesses all the warmth andgentleness associated with wool carpets.

Joining Grosgrain and Ribgrass in the Simply Natural collection, Stripe delivers consumers a carpet at the forefrontof interior style, but thanks to its carefully chosen colourways, one that has lasting appeal and which is matched byits high quality construction. Rated for Extra Heavy Domestic use, Stripe is available in both four and five-metrewidths.

Haggis and ‘high rollers’ helped raise nearly £3,000 for the Scottish Furnishing TradesBenevolent Association.

Some 95 people attended the association’s annual gala dinner at the Hilton GlasgowGrosvenor hotel (Wednesday November 19) where the meal included traditional haggis andwas followed by a casino night and raffle.

“It was a tremendous night with some incredible prizes to be won thanks to the generosityof so many companies and individuals,” said guest Nigel Blake, interim chief executive of‘sister’ organisation, the English-based Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association.

Both the FTBA and SFTBA are the only dedicated charities in the furnishings sector. SaidChristina Traynor, SFTBA president: “This year we will be donating about £33,000 tomembers in need of financial help – made possible through events such as this and thegenerosity of everyone concerned.”

Haggis and the high rollers

The Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association is £2, 715 better off this Christmas thanksto 29 companies who made generous donations to the FTBA.

“We also owe great thanks to the four industry publications which this year supportedour Christmas card initiative and helped make the campaign such a success for us,” saidFTBA interim chief executive Nigel Blake.

The FTBA has run its Christmas Card Campaign since 1993.The idea is for companiesacross the furniture and furnishings industry to donate what they would have spent oncards for customers, suppliers and other associates, to the FTBA. In exchange, the FTBAhas full page advertisements in trade press titles in December, passing on the season’sgreetings of all the companies taking part and listing everyone supporting the scheme.

“Charities increasingly need to build on proven ways of raising money and this particularinitiative has worked well for us for several years thanks to the support of everyoneinvolved,” said Nigel. “Christmas can be a particularly hard time for those in our industrywho might find themselves up against unexpected difficulties, so it’s good to know thatthere are companies willing to contribute to the funds that we use to help those whohave worked in our industry and are now in need of assistance.”

Christmas cheers for charity givers

When Jennifer, a 54-year-old single woman, was diagnosed withbreast cancer earlier this year, it wasn’t just the worry of treatmentand what might happen that left her feeling fearful.

With no partner to support her and just sick pay to live on, slidinginto serious debt became a very real problem.

Thankfully, as an upholstery machinist who has spent more than 20years working with different furniture companies, Jennifer has beenable to turn to the Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association for ahelping hand.

Now, the industry’s only dedicated charity has agreed to pay for theMOT she desperately needs to keep her car on the road. Havingher own transport is vital so she can make the daily 34-mile roundtrip to a Midlands hospital for radiotherapy treatment.

The FTBA has also agreed to pay up to £300 towards otherhousehold bills plus the cost of her next television license.

“Jennifer’s story is sadly all too common,” says FTBA interim chiefexecutive Nigel Blake. “The worries of dealing with something likebreast cancer are enough on their own without having all theattendant financial problems that can follow in its wake.

“Jennifer has been extremely concerned about falling behind withher bills and getting into debt since she was forced to take sickleave. At a time when household bills have risen significantly, herincome has dropped dramatically, adding to the rest of herproblems.”

The FTBA has also offered Jennifer the chance to apply for a respitebreak through its Edenfield holiday scheme so she can get away fora few days at a place of her choosing.

“We are able to offer many different forms of help to those whohave worked long and hard in our industry when they hit hardtimes,” said Nigel Blake. “It might be through a weekly annuity, a granttowards an unexpected cost or through the holiday scheme.”

Since August this year, the FTBA has approved £15,500 in one offgrants and holiday contributions.

Said Nigel Blake: “The very experienced team who sit on ourbenefits committee look at each case individually to decide how bestwe can help people. As a result we are able to make a very realdifference to the lives of many people each year.”

The advanced noise reducing benefits of two of the company's Timbermateunderlays also feature a built-in damp proof membrane, eliminating the need forextra moisture protection such as polythene sheeting.

The three Timbermate options include Silentfloor Gold (53 SONE tested),offering the highest specification acoustic performance and built-in damp proofmembrane.A high density, 4.2mm gauge underlay, it is designed as a superiorproduct where top performance is demanded, says Interfloor.

Timbermate Excel (56 SONE tested) is the original ‘all in one’ rubber underlaywith a built-in damp proof membrane. A 3.75mm gauge high density resilientrubber underlay, it meets most domestic and contract needs.

Last but not least,Timbermate Duratex (57 SONE tested) is the traditionalhigh density rubber underlay, designed for wood-based suspended floors wheremoisture is not an issue. This is a 3.75mm gauge, high density resilient rubberunderlay suitable for domestic and contract installations, the company states.

In addition to their acoustic properties, Interfloor reports that the underlayscan also be used as a sub-floor where there are surface imperfections, act as adust stop and help prevent overstraining of wood and laminate boards and arealso quick and easy to install.

Richard Bailey, managing director of Floorwise, says that underlay is essentialfor wood and laminate floors, as they are the largest single surface within ahome and therefore have the greatest impact on noise. 'These floorcoveringsare renowned for their noise transmission and reflection and by usingFloorwise’s Acoustica underlay products, the consumer can drastically improvetheir performance,' he said.

Each is subject to a number of sound tests, resulting in SONE ratings of 53for Acoustica Best, 54 for Better and the same score for Good, says Bailey.Impact noise is also considered, and the Acoustica products have achievednoise transference ratings of 24dB for Best, 23dB for Better and 22dB forGood. Both tests should be taken into account before choosing an underlay, says Bailey. He also advises retailers be aware that some manufacturers maytest products without floor coverings on top and these results are of littlemeaning – for example a foam or rubber-based product without a wood orlaminate floorcovering on top will drastically reduce the sound of a fallingobject, but with a floorcovering on top and under compression, the resultswill be very different.

The New Year again signals that Domotex is very nearly upon us.While readerscan find more general information elsewhere in this month's magazine, thereason for mentioning the event in this column is that the forthcoming showwill feature a special focus on the acoustic properties of a room.

The two day programme on 19 and 20 January will include lectures, workshopsand best practice presentations, combined with practical simulations andexperiments looking at how to create attractive room settings that also takeacoustics into account. The intention is to promote the message thatconsideration of sound reflection and absorption can create a healthier andhappier environment.

Suppliers of flooring products are taking this into account when designing theirproducts, especially in the area of sound absorption. An example of this is SonicGold Excel underlay from Novostrat, delivering a noise reduction of 22dB in alight weight format. The company states that a roll will only weigh a fraction ofthat of a roll of traditional underlay, making it easier to store, handle, deliverand, of course, to lay.

To the user, the range of underlays delivers the required level of cushioningunder a laminate floor, says Novostrat, even levelling out minor underfloorimperfections. Other properties include high impact resistance, damp-proofingand, because of their low tog rating, the underlays within the range will notreduce the efficiency of underfloor heating systems.

The company has found that developers are now specifying Novostrat productsbecause they contain no harmful HCFCs, halogens or heavy metals used intheir manufacture and, at the end of their working life, can be fully recycled andreused in the manufacture of other primary commercial or domestic products.

The company states that it is the largest manufacturer of polyethylene foam inIreland and its range of insulation products for domestic and commercialapplications is growing steadily. From its economy underlays to its highestperformance products, Novostrat says that it markets on price as well asperformance and thinks this is probably the most important of the boxes totick given the current economic situation.

Another supplier that has given thought to this subject is Interfloor, whichstates that all its Duralay and Tredaire products offer sound insulation whenused with carpet. It has also developed three underlays for use with wood andlaminate, potentially the floorcoverings known for being the noisiest.

Sound advice for health and happiness!

Prospects are looking less gloomy in 2009 than you might expect, according to a survey of readers of The Stocklists magazine – unless you particularly like sellinglaminate, oc course!

Nearly 60% of our readers reckon this year will see sales hold steady or improve - an impressive 35% are even predicting sales growth of 10% or more in the next 12months. Just a gloomy 4% felt that there would be a sales slump of more than 10% in 2009.

The Stocklists surveyed 150 readers by telephone in November and December last year to ask about sentiment for the New Year and were asked which products wereset for success in the new season. Consumers are coming back to carpet according to our retailers and there was an overwhelming vote of confidence by two-thirds ofrespondents in twist as the best seller of 2009.

In an encouraging trend, cheaper carpet is seen to be becoming less attractive whereas quality is set to sell well - although retailers mention that 100% wool was aninvestment too far for many consumers but 80/20 is very strong and stain-resistant popular. Vinyl products are showing increased signs of sales growth according to somestores.

The loser is laminates. The biggest single vote in our survey was the response by 70% of retailers thatsales of laminates were failing and that this trend would continue in 2009 – a result that is unlikely todisappoint most of the independent retailers.

We asked about what people would most like to change in 2009 and the answers were as varied asretailers individual needs but less discounting, more honesty about pricing and better promotion weresingled out. Several uncharitable comments about Carpetright cannot be printed here!

A repeated response was the call for more colour. Retailers feel that consumers are more confidentabout colour but, despite obvious efforts in the industry, there’s a sense that they are still under-servedamid the acres of beige. Brown emerged from the survey as the single most tipped colour for success in2009 with green a close second. Stripes are seeing a surge in popularity but a rumoured resurgence inpattern appears to have been short-lived with some retailers suggesting that consumers are becomingmore resistant.

Our retailers hold their nerve for 2009

What will consumers be choosing in 2009?
