Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection
General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet
roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first
• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards
• BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles
• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation
• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water
• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:
WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.
Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.
Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE
accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.
SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.
FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.
SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.
LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but
still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for
prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing
as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a
velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of
high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.
The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –
although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned
axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to
axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre
is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create
a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality
carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat
weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a
wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.
BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet
Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet
Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Underlay
Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.
PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.
Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).
Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.
CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets
Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, environmentalist and celebrity TV chef, was guest of honour at the launch of Axminster Carpets’ revolutionary newWater Recycling Plant. Sited at their mill in Buckfast on the edge of Dartmoor, the Company has traditionally used water from the local RiverDart to wash greasy wool prior to the spinning process as well as dyeing yarn. Previously the waste water from the manufacturing processeswould be discharged and treated by the local water authority, but Axminster Carpets has invested in excess of £2m in a brand new facilityengineered to convert its waste water back to a level where it can be completely reused.
Now, 95% of their waste water, over 2 million litres per week, will be piped back intothe plant processes without entering the eco-system after having all the contaminantsremoved. The residual waste is being converted to bio-fuel with the long term planto use this to power the company’s lorry fleet and the manufacturing plant.
The commissioning of this new water treatment plant represents Axminster Carpets’ongoing strategy to minimise the impact of its yarn spinning and carpet manufacturingprocesses on the environment. The company’s vision is to become the industry leaderin sustainable low carbon manufacturing to support its ‘Natural, British, Beautiful’ ethos.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall stated at the launch ceremony that it was a ‘boldinvestment, with high economic and environmental benefits’ he went on to say that‘Axminster Carpets were to be applauded for taking a leading role and for being aresponsible manufacturer’
Josh Dutfield, Axminster Carpets Group Managing Director, responded by saying that itwas a ‘win win situation’. ‘As a Company who takes environmental issues very seriouslywe can see that any investment of this type is not only good for the Planet, but alsopays back many times over in cost savings to the business’. ‘We have recentlylaunched the first Carbon Neutral range of carpets branded Swaledale, and followingan independent assessment of our carbon footprint our plan is to reduce our carbonemissions ahead of Government targets and to be a leader in our industry’

IVC updates appearance
As part of it’s on-going strategy to adapt and develop its business model to offer the complete productand service package to its customers, IVC Group has given a new look and name to it’s commercialflooring division – itec® contract floors.

Francis Debrabandere, Commercial Director, explains: “In 2010 we have exciting plans for IVC which will be rolled out in the coming months. One such plan is to build our presence in the contract sector and while we offer excellent commercial products, our Q-Pro range was littleknown in the UK.Therefore, we have taken the step to rebrand to itec® to create a future proof image that will also focus the mind ofcontractors, specifiers and designers on our excellent commercial product offering.”

As all contractors know, continuous kneeling down puts enormous pressure on yourknees and periods of absence due to chronic joint injuries are a real possibility, costingtime and money.
However, there is an answer in Redbacks, the latest generation of knee pads designedto bring protection and reduce the chances of injury for flooring installers. Exclusivelyavailable through your local Floorwise distributor, Redbacks bring unrivalled cushioningfor the knee and are engineered to last 10 times longer than foam pads.
Redbacks protect knees through the patented Matrix Impact System™, which iscomposed of a tubular matrix holding a spring in place. The critical positioning of thespring provides a large uniform area to take the pressure of kneeling and disperse itevenly through the structure and into the ground. The matrix itself is curved tocontour around the knee and prevent rocking but also has enough movement to allowfor small muscle contractions and the shifting of the kneecap under pressure. The resultis comfort ‘under knee’ and protection where you need it most.
In fact, so good is the Matrix impact system that Redbacks are 70% better at absorbingthe force of a human subject when walking on the knee than any slide-in knee padcurrently on the market. Redbacks are cheaper than many leading kneepad brands onthe market, once again bringing excellent value from your local Floorwise stockist.

Expert approach to Harrogate
Harrogate’s Flooring Show has set out a new approach to the hall layout to “bring back theprofessionalism and expertise” to the September event, say organisers. In a new move, Hall B hasbeen designated for demonstrations plus contract and non-carpet products. A large area is availablefor installation, product and tool demonstrations which will be supported by the Contract FlooringAssociation and the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers.
“We want to make a real feature of sharing skills in the flooring industry and create an area whereprofessionals can exchange expertise and information’, says show organiser David Wildman. Plansinclude a ‘Test the Expert’ feature and scheduled demonstration events. The show had become a littleunfocussed and confusing. We want to have better organisation for visitors and exhibitors so thatthey can get the most out of the event,” said David.
Halls A, C & M will be predominantly focussed on carpets and rugs with Hall B reserved for contractflooring, smooth flooring, wood laminate and vinyl, tools and accessories. Many of these activities werepreviously held in Hall Q which was more difficult to access from the main exhibition area.
The momentum behind the Harrogate event has continued to build with strong support from majorflooring companies. More than 50 exhibitors have already signed and over a dozen more havereservations – a position well ahead of target according to organisers.
“Many of the major players in the sector have already committed and we are planning an excitingevent to inject new life into the format and increase its relevance to the widest possible audience,”says David Wildman. The event has also launched its new website with a list of exhibitors to date andother information including the floor plans at www.harrogateflooringshow.net

Tragic death of Pierre Lano
The tragic death of Pierre Lano has saddened and shocked the flooring industry across Europe afterthe highly respected and inspirational entrepreneur took his own life on December 9. He was aged 65.
‘Pierre Lano was one of the most charismatic and energetic people in the flooring business,” saidDavid Spragg of The Stocklists. “He cared deeply about the industry and the people in it. He madetime to talk to everyone no matter how busy he was. His cheerfulness and enthusiasm for life makeshis death all the more of a shock.”
Pierre Lano was born on August 23, 1944 in Harelbeke and in 1970 he took over the family textilebusiness. He positioned the company in a number of profitable niche markets where quality andservice are important. The company grew into a major player with worldwide recognition.
He was proud of his company that he built up to a “state of the art” model within the sector. In hisprivate life as well as in business, he managed to build bridges. In his factories, he knew almost all 500 employees by name. Many have beenworking for him their entire career. He encouraged his people to perform to the best of their abilities.
In 2008 his company also suffered the problems the whole textile industry was confronted with. At the end of 2008 Pierre Lano transferred all hisoperational responsibilities to the professional management that he had gathered around him and he retired to the level of the Board ofDirectors. He advised and shared his knowledge and experience. As he already stated in 2005: “I delegate a lot, that’s the good side of my politicalmandate. Due to my absences, I was obliged to ensure that there was a strong management that could take decisions.”
Since early 2009, Lano focused on its strategic repositioning. Encouraging results from this exercise confirm that the right choices were made.
He was not only active as a textile entrepreneur but was also a long time mayor and Member of Parliament. Pierre Lano was known as aflamboyant and social character. With grief we say goodbye to a driven entrepreneur and the inspirer of the Lano Group.

Cornering the market
The new Skiffers from Stairrods (UK) protect skirting corners from scuffing andbecoming chipped, whilst ensuring new paintwork and varnish remains pristine andsmart.

Whether in aprivate home or public place, such as a restaurant, guest house or function room, fitting Skiffers will provide useful protection and create an attractive decorativefeature.
Cast in solid brass, these attractive corner protectors are available in seven finishes, which complement existing door thresholds, door furniture and stair rods: polished, satin and antique brass, satin nickel, chrome, pewter, and black. There are threealternative sizes, dependent on the depth of the skirting board: 75mm, 117mm and134mm, which are supplied in packs of six. Each Skiffer is supplied with six screws ina matching finish.

On the social aspects of the location, Sunny comments: “We will implement anexciting social programme, based around the vibrant Broad Street, for those whowish to socialise with colleagues. However, due to all the extra visitors we will beattracting to the show, exhibitors may just wish to put their feet up in the evenings!”

A cut above the restLeading UK tufted carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets hasinvested over £1million in its cut length system over the past twoyears to keep the company at the cutting edge of customer needs.
The latest phase has seen a new conveyor system installed betweenthe warehouse and the cutting tables and the purchase of four new‘reach’ boom trucks to service the updated system.
“The project provides several benefits for the business andcustomers,” said Cormar md, David Judge. “The new conveyor linkfrom warehouse to cut lengths machines will halve the journey timefor carpet rolls going into and out of the department, increasing cutting rate and capacity.
“The reduced boom truck travelling and new reach trucks will cut traffic conflict in both operational and warehouse areas and will result inlocal environmental benefits and energy savings. Segregating the boom truck traffic from operational areas also has safety benefits for Cormaremployees as it reduces the risk of accident or collision.”
Other improvements include an upgraded state-of-the-art measuring system, new labelling system and developments in IT. An automated rollwrapping mechanism, currently under development, will also contribute to improving the effectiveness of the cutting process. This latest phasefollows on from the upgrade to the sortation system in July 2008 which maximised Cormar’s ability to cut, load and ship to tight deadlines.

Carbon positive position for KronospanTwo internationally recognised environmental standards, which cementthose certified as leaders in sustainability, have been awarded toKronospan. The producer of high quality wood-based panels andassociated products has had its carbon footprint independently measuredand certified by BlueGreen Carbon, and can now officially supply CarbonPositive chipboard products. Kronospan has also achieved CARB lowformaldehyde accreditation, further demonstrating its uncompromisingcommitment to the environment.
Kronospan manufactures its panels in the UK using wood sourced fromFSC certified sustainable forests and recycled wood to produce MDF,chipboard and melamine faced panels for use in domestic andcommercial kitchens, bathrooms and flooring systems. The BlueGreenCarbon standard, awarded for all chipboard products, recognisesKronospan’s carbon mitigation policy which has been in place at its UKmanufacturing site for almost a decade.
Iain Ferguson, environmental manager at Kronospan, explains: “Over thepast 10 years we’ve invested upwards of £15 million in making ourprocesses more environmentally friendly. We looked at how we coulduse materials differently, cleaned up the materials coming in to thefactory and removed any contaminants.
“We’ve worked with our whole supply chain to make sure that at everystage of the sourcing process there are consistent quality protocols inplace, ultimately encouraging our suppliers to improve the standard ofmaterials sent to us. For this reason we didn’t need any environmental‘credits’ or to offset any extra carbon to achieve the BlueGreen Carbonstandard as our processes were already so sustainable.”
Earlier this year Kronospan was also awarded the CARB accreditation, aUS-based standard which recognises manufacturers that produce MDFpanels with a far lower content of formaldehyde than the industrystandard. Kronospan achieved both phase one and phase two of theaccreditation, and MDF panels meeting these criteria are in productionfor retailers throughout Europe, further improving the company’ssustainability arsenal and complementing it’s carbon positive status.
Iain continues:“As sustainability issues continue to top the specification agenda, more and more customers are asking for proof that our environmentalsystems are robust. We’ve always had incredibly high sustainability standards, but to have this recognized by official third party organisations reassures ourcustomers that our products and processes operate with the utmost respectfor, and minimal possible impact on, the environment.”

As the Internet has expanded beyond all expectations, so it isbecoming increasingly of interest to the business world and offeringa growing number of opportunities, either to provide add-on salesor increase efficiency by automating processes such as customerenquiries. The traditional world of retailing still needs the sameinterpersonal skills required to maintain customer loyalty, but thesecan now be complemented by attracting enquiries and ordersthrough dedicated websites.
One of the most recent initiatives to focus on the flooring industryis www.beautifulflooring.co.uk, which has been designed to allowconsumers to view a wide selection of products online and thendirect them to their nearest flooring retailer. Launched by BondRetail Marketing as an industry-wide facility, it features all 38 of thebuying group's members and a recruitment drive is ongoing to signup retailers in various areas around the UK.
Following developmental work in partnership with manufacturersand suppliers of carpet, smooth flooring and rugs, visitors to the sitewill be able to view 950 carpets and up to 200 options of vinyl, laminate, solid wood and LVT designs. In addition to showingapproximately 2800 rug options, the website will also allowconsumers to create bespoke versions, choosing their own colourand type of structure. These can then be viewed in situ within achoice of 10 different room settings to provide a virtualrepresentation and allow consumers to gauge the effect of theircreations.
The choice of floor coverings featured on the website will beexclusive and unbranded, with dedicated displays within memberstores replicating the online offering of carpet and smooth flooring.Samples of these will also be available to order, delivered in 48 hours.
The Carpet Foundation reports that visitor numbers to its websitewww.carpetfoundation.com have jumped from 33,000 as recently as2007 to over 100,000 at the end of November 2009. One in threevisits results in a search for the nearest retailer, while the mostpopular pages are from the ‘Buying a Carpet’ section, whereconsumers source information and advice, increasingly staying longerand viewing more pages.
The CF also recently offered all registered specialists a free onepage website on the site and the facility to update wheneverrequired at no extra cost. Members can now not only benefitdirectly from increased visitor numbers but can also track how manyconsumers visit their page, view their profile and look for directionsto their business, the foundation states. Plans for 2010 include moreinitiatives, such as pay per click, to drive more traffic to the site tothe benefit of industry members, while continuing to directconsumers to retailers to receive professional advice and service.
Individual manufacturers have been equally active online, as can beseen by the example of Kährs: 'The Internet is a great resource andretailers that are quick to embrace modern technology have hugecapacity for potential ‘e-tail’ growth,' said Harvey Booth, UK salesmanager. 'Dedicated retail websites allow companies to advertisethemselves, their services and their products to a far wideraudience, and the inclusion of customer feedback and referencesgives further ‘third party’ endorsement. With many consumers nowchecking out websites before visiting a shop, this first impression isincredibly valuable!'
He highlighted additional advantages, such as providing access toPDF brochures that save on printing and postage costs, whileallowing manufacturers to provide instant additional support totrade customers while delivering a consistent message. 'Our owninitiatives include an extensive professional website resource, Kährsofficial internet dealer scheme, which provides further support toboth the retailer and consumer, and a virtual showroom wherevisitors can lay a floor online. All can be accessed viawww.kahrs.co.uk,' Booth concluded.
Ulster Carpets is another manufacturer with a comprehensiveonline offering, using it to show its latest current ranges and designsto consumers. In addition to searching for appropriate ranges, stylesor colours, co-ordinating and complimentary products can also befound. installation and aftercare advice, or email questions to the company. From a trade perspective, registered retailers can view stocks, reserve or order stock and track orders. Replicating Ulster'scustomer services helpline, its online facility is accessible 24 hours aday, 7 days per week, the company stated.
Discussing the rise of online retail sales, Nick Pratt of Sitemakerssaid that this has now moved on from CDs, books and electricalitems to include those products that are tailored to the customer'sneeds, such as flooring. 'Carpet in particular is one product that isdifficult to sell online without human intervention. But this does notmean that there is no place for the Internet in this process,' he said.'This is where multi-channel retailing makes sense. Here we seecustomers maybe starting a transaction in-store, continuing theirresearch online, and possibly going back to the website to completethe transaction.
'Maybe they complete the transaction in-store, but carry out all oftheir research online.Whatever the balance, the customer has thechoice to communicate with their supplier in the ways that are mostconvenient for them at any particular point. Flooring and carpetretailers who adopt these multi-channel retailing principles to help
sell their products will protect their own market share and take aslice form others who don’t.' Laura Cohen, marketing manager ofyourfloors.co.uk agreed that an Internet presence can enhance sales:'Your online store is open when the high street store is closed. It’sabout embracing change and understanding the web and how to useit to your advantage which many flooring retailers are now doing.'With more consumers wishing to shop online and more flooringretailers embracing this technology, Cohen stated that additionalsales can be generated through either direct orders or encouragingconsumers to visit the store. 'I predict more and more independentflooring retailers will have an online presence either via a brochuresite driving consumers in store or an e-commerce site which theyhave independently developed or through a group’s portal. We arecurrently working on further enhancements such as offering fittingand accessories online which will make yourfloors.co.uk a one stopshop for consumers, increase the average basket size and createadditional sales,' she said.
Another online flooring facility is that of www.carpetinfo.co.uk,designed as a consumer-facing resource aiming to provide unbiasedinformation on carpet for homeowners. Its various features includeneutral information on fibre types, styles, colour and texture, as wellas care advice, and also includes a comprehensive retailer listing, sorted by geographical region, to provide access to local specialists.Retailers featured on the site benefit from association with helpfuladvice, rather than sales-driven patter, the organiser stated. It alsoallows consumers to request brochures from manufacturers, as wellas read in-depth articles on relevant flooring topics.
The Stocklists magazine offers retailers a budget option to getrepresentation on the net with their Floorsites package at just £390plus £90 per year. The service provides ready-made flooring industrywebsites which have the retailer’s details such as contact andlocation information and opening hours embedded within it.Anexample can be seen at http://www.thestocklists.com/floorsites
Floorsites have standard pages to help consumers with infomationabout different flooring types. Retailers can customise the sites withtheir own text and pictures - or just leave it pretty much as it is.

The New Year always begins with a rush of activity for the BWMB marketing team as it heads on tothe road to promote British Wool at leading international trade shows.
As the market for British Wool is international, the need to attend trade shows in other countries isfundamental to maintaining the brand across the world.
“In recent years we have become aware that it is important to be seen at major trade events and flythe flag for British Wool and the products made from it,” explained Richard Poole, European BusinessManager at the BWMB.
The BWMB see their role as multi-faceted, connecting people within the industry globally, informingthem about UK grown wool and the best breeds to use for products, educating people about woolgenerally and also promoting British Wool carpet ranges made by their licensees.
The BWMB has rolled out a series of new marketing campaigns to help promote British Wool andthe latest - the ‘Naturally Green’ campaign will showcase their leading role in positioning wool as theenvironmentally favourable fibre for carpet.
The campaign will form a major part of their activities at both Domotex in Germany and Surfaces inLas Vegas.
British Wool attendDomotex 2010
British Wool will host a stand with partners Brintons andAxminster Carpets at the leading American show in Las Vegas.“This is very much a product led show for us and we are delightedto have two well-known and highly respected brands accompanyingus at this event.”The USA has seen a huge turn to the environmental agenda in thelast two years and whilst wool is still a minority fibre for carpetthere, it is now attracting a lot of new interest because of itsnatural origin.“The ‘Naturally Green’ promotion is the perfect message for thismarket at this time,”Tim Booth, Product Development Manager atthe BWMB commented, adding, “Our environmental study will helpus position British Wool as the ‘Planet Friendly fibre for Carpet’.”The British Wool ISO 14040 environmental accreditation adds realcredibility to the British Wool campaign in a valuable market that istaking a serious stance on ‘green-washing’ – the term given tounproven claims about environmental status.“British Wool, grown on sheep breeds that graze freely in the UK isa natural fibre which has the greenest of beginnings and is the mostsustainable fibre available to carpet.Whilst the origin is clearlyexcellent, we still wanted to offer detail and data to the carpetindustry and our LCA report does exactly that.”British Wool can be found on stand 4731.

At Domotex 2010 the BWMB operate a business-centre style stand forBritish Wool licensees including merchants, spinners and manufacturerswhilst promoting the fibre as the natural, sustainable fibre for carpetunder the ‘Naturally Green’ campaign. The recent Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) Study completed to ISO 14040 byLeeds University has provided British Wool with valuable credibility andvital information for the industry at a time when many manufacturersare looking to address the environmental status of their products andtheir business. The BWMB has attached the LCA to their platinum quality assurancecertification, which will allow manufacturers to have the path of theirfibre outlined at every stage from wool auction to finished yarn.“We can guarantee the source of the fibre through the assurancecertification system and this will make the LCA a valuable document tomanufacturers as they choose to support aspects of their ‘green’
marketing,” RichardPoole, EuropeanBusiness Manager said. The aim is thatmanufacturers will seethe marketing benefitof the PlatinumCertificate as addingvaluable credibility andquality standards totheir products and inthe coming year, theBWMB will bepromoting this toensure that retailersunderstand what itmeans to theircustomer.British Wool can befound in Hall 5 Stand F38.

Happier New Year
“Suppliers needto maintain
service levels” “A new party inpower will create
confidence”
“Many folk think weare desperate fortheir business”
Retailers have reasons to be cheerfulafter surviving the recessionRetailers reported an upbeat attitude to surviving the recession in2009 with 65% saying circumstances had been better than expected inour end-of-year survey of market conditions taken just beforeChristmas.
Only 25% said it was worse than they feared while just over 5% had a‘good recession’. And two-thirds of retailers think this year willimprove!
The ‘better than expected’ result for 2009 makes you wonder what wewere expecting as the survey sample reported very substantiallyreduced sales. Almost half our respondents said sales were downbetween 15 and 20% and altogether 76% of our sample reportedlosses. Almost a third had cut staff hours.
But the general sentiment was that the recession had been talked up.“I blame the media,” said a North East retailer. “Many folk think we aredesperate for their business and demand big discounts.”
Almost 40% of survey respondents said more customers had askedfor discounts but there were widespread reports of the quality end ofthe market holding up well and many retailers have enjoyed fewerorders at higher margins and ended up ahead.
“Slashing pricings is suicide unless like certain major groups you inflatethen first,” said a West Country retailer. “When times are hard, youmust find ways of increasing the margin”.
We asked whether suppliers had been helping in 2009 and almost60% of retailers said suppliers had been ‘a little more helpful’ in termsof pricing during the year – although a similar figure reported thatcredit control had also been noticeably more aggressive.
But supplier service levels came in for some criticism and therecession appears to have kept some reps off the road. “Some repsare making less calls and one we know has been told to save fuel andvisit less frequently – I won’t buy if they don’t come to see me,” said arural retailer. An Essex retailer said: “Suppliers need to concentrate onmaintaining service levels in these tough times.”
Also it was felt that bad debts among some retailers was prejudicing‘good payers’.This comment came up unprompted from severalretailers. A South Yorkshire retailer summarised it: “Suppliers should closeaccounts who are slow payers and should not supply them on proforma. Suppliers should support the rest of us who do pay our bills.”
Turning to 2010, we’re pleased to report that 65% of retailers expecta much better year - of those, 41% are anticipating slow, steadyimprovement while 24% suggested the first half would be flat but witha better second half. Only 6% expected further decline in the market.
But 94% or respondents said they had no plans to increase staffinglevels – a sign of a ‘wait and see’ approach to the economy.
Asked what suppliers could do to help the recovery, 44% selected‘competitive new products’ as the main driver with only 19% favouringbetter pricing on existing products. 25% asked for bettermerchandising and sampling and, maybe surprisingly, only 12% pickedeasier credit terms as the issue that would make a difference in 2010.
And many in the trade are looking forward to the election! In our‘soapbox’ section where views are unprompted, it was noticeable howmany retailers blamed the Government for many of the pastproblems. “Gordon Brown should do the country a favour and call theelection.Whichever party takes power, it will create confidence.Thisgovernment is weak and unfocussed.

Design talent competes
New Design Britain at Interiors 2010 in Birmingham can be a launch pad fortomorrow's leading designers. The event takes place January 24 - 27 at theNEC Birmingham.
When it comes to training the designers of tomorrow, Britain is a world-leader. Former students from the UK's design colleges can be found in manyof the 'designer companies' both here and abroad. However this rich streamof talent brings with it a problem - how does today's new designer standout from the crowd and attract the attention of their future employer?
It was in order to address this industry-wide problem that Interiors took thedecision to put its New Design Britain competition, open to graduates andpostgraduates, right at the heart of the event as part of its Thinking Spacefeature area in Hall 2.
There are two main categories in the competition: Made in Britain andDesigned in Britain. Each of these has four subsections: Furniture, Fabrics,Accessories and Surface Coverings.
"The buzz Thinking Space has created is almost tangible," said UBM's eventdirector Andrew Vaughan. "New Design Britain will be there, alongsideDesignersblock, the seminar theatre, a collaboration between BirminghamCity University and Global Color Research amongst other brand new, must-see initiatives.”
interiors is the UK's largest interiors trade event which attracted 25,000interiors professionals in January 2009. In the past the event has been verysuccessful at presenting a platform to bring the work of new designers tothe attention of key people within the industry.

Business NewsFestive cheer for the flooring tradePre-Christmas trading was reported to be strong as the CBI reported thatretail sales were growing at their fastest pace for two years.
The CBI’s monthly and quarterly distributive trades survey found a balanceof 13 per cent of retailers reporting higher sales compared to the sameperiod last year – the second consecutive month of rising sales. A balanceof 19 per cent said they expected sales to rise further in the remainder ofthe year.
Durable household goods including furniture and carpets – two sectors hithard by the drop in housing activity – were among the more promisingsectors, showing growth for the second month in a row.
In addition to a general strengthening of consumer confidence, the returnof VAT to 17.5% at the beginning of this year was seen as a factor inmotivating major purchases.
Andy Clarke, chairman of the CBI distributive trades panel, and chiefoperating officer of Asda, said: “It’s reassuring that the high street now hasa second month of sales growth behind it, and it looks like December willbe even better. A lot of retailers have suffered during 2009, and many arerelieved that the year is ending on a more positive note.”
In a pointer to prospects in the first half of 2010 however, optimismamong wholesalers was in shorter supply although the sector reportedsales rising for the first time in more than a year. A balance of 31 per centexpected sales to fall, a balance of 41 per cent expected their employmentlevels to fall and a balance of 19 per cent said they expected to invest lessin their businesses than they did in the past year.
Selling 100 miles of carpet a week!
If you were wondering who has had a ‘good recession’, few will besurprised that Carpetright has prospered following the collapse of itsmajor competitor Allied.
Independent retailers should look away now as Carpetright announcedjust before Christmas that they were selling 118 miles of 4-metre widecarpet every week in the second half of 2009! “Enough to get from hereto Boston,” said Lord Harris – and he wasn’t referring to the distancefrom London to Lincolnshire!
In addition to the Allied factor, the company cited a recovery in housingmarkets in Britain and Ireland which boosted profits by 15% to £11m forthe half year which ended in October. Carpetright’s margins are revealedby the comparable sales figure for the period of £258m – a 9% increasewhich shows the the company’s margins are tight but improving.
Carpetright opened 39 new stores in the six months to the end ofOctober but closed 18.The total store count at present is over 500.
Most of the company’s recovery came in sales of vinyl flooring andtraditional carpet, with laminates and wood floor sales continuing to fall.“Laminates were a fashion, and we were doing about £25m a year butwe’re now doing about £10m a year,” said Lord Harris.
Recession costs flooring £298mThe recession has cost the UK Floor Coverings industry £298million in lost profit in the last year according to new research bymarket analysts Plimsoll.
David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the Plimsoll Analysis –Floor Coverings, says “The recession has hit the sector hard withmore than half of the companies analysed in our new reportmaking less profit than they were a year before. The bill in lostprofits stands at £298 million”.
When pressed for a reason for this collapse in the bottom line ofcompanies throughout the market, Pattison suggests, “With demandso subdued and the resultant competition, many companies areunable to charge the price they need to make healthy profitmargins. In the absence of pricing power many companies will haveto make painful but necessary cutbacks in the next 12 months”.
However, the burden of lost profit is not being shared equally asPattison explains, “610 companies have bore the brunt of thedownturn. These companies have seen their profit marginsdecimated and in the absence of a big upturn in demand will haveto cut their cloth accordingly.Watch out for further job losses andclosures as these companies look to claw themselves back to profitnext year. If they fail to act quickly they could find themselvesrunning out of cash”.
On the other hand, there are still companies getting it right in spiteof it all, “Amazingly, there are 112 companies that have maintained orincreased their profit margins in the last year. All things consideredthat’s a pretty good achievement. While some of these companiesmade cut backs to match their lower sales expectations others havemanaged the Holy Grail – they have grown their business andincreased their profit margins in a recession. Those companies provethat an efficient business selling the right product to the right marketcan still succeed in the UK floor coverings industry”.
The new Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Floor Coverings gives aninstant performance rating on the top 1000 companies in themarket. Debt mountain for UK exporters
2009 saw a colossal increase in the value of foreign debt being chased byUK exporters. New data from Lovetts, the law firm specialising incommercial debt recovery and litigation, has found that in the first quarterof the year, businesses were experiencing a shocking 475% increase in thevalue of debt from overseas customers compared to the same period in 2008.
While much focus has been put on tackling late payment amongstbusinesses in the UK, the new data shows how exporters need to be justas vigilant when dealing with overseas customers.
While Q1 saw almost a five fold increase in the value of foreign debtbeing chased for payment, as the year has progressed, the levels of debthave decreased, although they are still substantial increases on 2008. InQuarter 2 2009, the year on year increase in the value of overseas debtbeing chased had come down to 103% and in Q3 2009 it has reducedfurther to a 30.6% year on year rise.

VoiceOF THE TRADE
“John HopkinsChairman, O2H2 Flooring Consultants
“What’s the key market issue/challenge today? The main challenge today is obtaining finance and maintaining cashflowand dealing with companies who ask for more and more discountsand extended payment arrangements.
What’s your favourite flooring product?A good quality 80/20 wool/nylon plain coloured cut-pile carpet.
Which product or product type is past its sell by datenow do you think?Cheap laminate flooring.
Do people selling carpet know enough about fibre andcomposition? In my experience there are too many retailers who do not understandthe properties, benefits and negatives of carpet fibres and yarn blends.
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what wouldit be?Invest in more staff training both in product knowledge, salestechniques and customer service.
If you could ask installers/fitters to change one thing, what would it be?Attend training courses to maintain skills and keep up to date withnew products, tools and installation techniques.
What’s the biggest difference to flooring installation inthe last ten years? The development of better tools, equipment, adhesives and doublestick systems particularly in contract situations.
Is there still a skills gap in flooring installations? Whatskills require the most development? There are still too many fitters who have not been trained in productknowledge and basic skills of handling and installing flooring materials. This can only be addressed by making training and certificationcompulsory. Hopefully this would help eliminate the ‘cowboy’ reducecomplaints and improve customer satisfaction.
Are cowboy fitters still an issue for the reputation ofthe trade? Yes they always were and I suspect that they always will be.
In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you? The general apathy towards training and general lack of knowledgeparticularly in some sectors of the retail trade.
And most disappointed you? The demise of the once world wide excellence of the UK carpetmanufacturing industry.
Is yarn technology making carpets and rugs moreinteresting or just more complicated? With a good knowledge of fibres, yarn technology, dyeing andmanufacturing techniques many interesting effects can be achieved. It isnot rocket science just good technical and design knowledge.
Overall, how good are retailers and manufacturers atdealing with complaints? There are a few good manufactures and retailers who deal withcomplaints in a professional manner. However there are too many, who possibly because of lack of technical knowledge, bury their headsin the sand and hope that the problem will go away.
Is the insurance industry helping or hinderingretailer/consumer relations? This is an area fraught with difficulties. It depends largely on trustbetween the various parties and ensuring that any claim is justified.
Do retailers know enough to advise consumers oncarpet care and maintenance? In general NO. Once again we return to the general lack of trainingand product knowledge to enable sales staff to give good soundadvice. For example on the correct type of suction cleaner to use ona particular construction of carpet.
If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have beenyour second choice career? (Should it have been!?) My grandfather and father were specialist wire drawers, making specialwire for various industries. However this was a dying art so my fatherwould not train me in this and advised me to seek a different pathhence my move into textiles. During this period I was fortunate towork part time as a Master of Ceremonies for large dances andentertainment areas. So if I could rewind the clock I would liked tohave been a professional Toast Master. Saying that I have enjoyed mycareer in the industry particularly the many people that I have metduring this time.
