he kept up. He dropped into another lane, passed me, and jumped back in front of me (without tail-gating or danger) and I kept up with him. Eventu-ally I moved over, he slowed down, let me in front, and pulled in behind me again. Then he jumped over again to the next lane, and caught up with me, just driving side by side. I was giggling like a schoolgirl, and could only think of one way to describe it… frolicking. He and I were frolicking like dolphins in the surf together, show-ing off, driving together, faster, slower, round and round. It was a Porsche thing. Now, please don’t get me wrong, the highway by then was clear, we didn’t annoy people, we didn’t break any laws, and I would never advocate “highways games.” But it was just so COOL! I felt so… accepted, as a part of this club of people who own these amazing cars! And it’s not just the club; it’s the shared appreciation of engineering excellence, the collective psyche of understanding what these cars are built to do. Which leads me to a small digression.

I have been a gear head, petrol head, what-have-you, for many years. It started with American muscle cars when I was 19. My significant other and I restored pre-‘70s Mustangs and Firebirds. I had a discerning ear for an engine misfire, an exhaust rattle, a transfer case being low on fluid. I love

these old things, and what they stood for. Later on, I discovered the art of the European sports cars, high-performance cars, and supercars. It’s not that I don’t like the occasional Audi TT, but really, I’d rather spend the afternoon with a Van-quish, or Veyron. (And who wouldn’t?) A few weeks ago, I had a real ah-ha moment about why I (and I will only speak for myself here) buy and drive high-performance cars, and super-cars. Although they have steering wheels, and gas pedals, clutches, and exhausts, I am not here for ’driving.’ Although driving is the word used to operate an engine and wheels while steering, driv-ing is what I do to get from one place to another. I drive to the store, or to work, or get my kid to school. I bought a Porsche to experience. I wanted to experience the pinnacle of engineering genius aimed just for my type of sensibility. I can appreci-ate how my gears change like sliding silk. How around a corner (again, safely) the tires seize the

Hi, I’m new here, but you probably knew that. (My picture looks different from Dave’s for

starters.) What you may not know is how com-pletely over the moon I am to finally be here, for so many reasons. Let me try to run through a few. First, I have a PORSCHE! I’m so excited! Second, normal people don’t understand me. Do you have this problem? “Did you know that the new Veyron won’t do over 137 mph if it doesn’t have 95 octane fuel or higher?” “My Porsche’s spoiler pops up by itself at 75 mph, isn’t that cool?” Somehow, these kinds of things make peo-ple’s eyes glaze over, and so I go quietly through life keeping these fabulous bits of fun to myself. So I am very happy to be amongst people who not only speak my language, but also are just as excited as I am about these kinds of things. Third, when you bought your first Porsche did you think, “I’m on my way”? I am on my way to a collection. I have noticed that quite a few of you have more than one Porsche. I really want the family parked in my garage. I’ll start with a

Boxster, then get a Panamera (to replace my fam-ily car), a nice 911 turbo (because by then I’ll have been around enough racing to really want to dive in), and then another 911 (because you really can’t have too many). The day I bought my Porsche (did I mention that was late October, 2009? Hehe — really, I’ve only been here for 2 months!), I posted to my Face-book, “Let the supercar collection begin!” And fourth (then I’ll stop numbering them), because of the super secret, friendly, wonderful code among Porsche owners. Let me explain. My first time out alone on the highway, I took my car up Rt. 1 to Rt. 128S in the afternoon. There was something wrong and so traffic was clogged up, and there was a bit of a tailback. A beautiful silver 911 turbo just hap-pened to be coming by, he flashed his brights and let me in. I thought he was kind, and that it was nice he let my little car in, but not too much of it after that. We crept slowly for only about a half-mile, and then traffic opened up. I sped up,

to the Annual Gala this year. Fortunately for both my wife and me, I listened to the weather reports and ended up taking her car instead. The Gala was held at The International in Bolton, MA. We had a good turnout this year despite the weather. The food was really good with the main courses being prepared expertly. One of the highlights this year was a special award that I had the honor of presenting to Dave Weber. This award was in recognition for all of the hard work Dave has done for the club over the past twenty-five years. Moving on to the job front, I have been spend-ing my time networking and interviewing. My main focus as you may remember has been on the Northeast region of the country that includes New York City, Connecticut, and Boston. I was recently in New York City and was amazed at how busy the stores seemed to be. Surely the reces-sion must be coming to an end. I have also been exploring some job opportuni-ties in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Texas. Yes Texas, the land of long horns and long necks. There are

many hedge funds that have set up shop in Texas. I am not sure, but it could have something to do with the energy business. Of course if I land a position in one of these areas it would mean that my family and I would have to relocate and that I would have to step down

from my post as President. Hopefully this won’t happen. Speaking of my family, it has been a busy time for us. The kids are in Karate and just recently graduated to Blue belts in Black Belt training. They really seem to enjoy Karate and have made many new friends at the school they are attend-ing. My wife has also begun taking adult defen-sive classes there, which are geared for women. She now comes home all excited and wants to show me some of the things she has learned. Just recently she stood in front of me and asked me grab her around the neck. Being the extremely intelligent person I am, I did not immediately comply for fear that I may be in for some extreme pain if I did so. Finally we have the holidays. My family and I will be celebrating Christmas in NJ with Nan and Grandpa. The boys are very excited since they don’t get to see their grandparents as often as they would like. My parents are excited too for the very same reason. It should be a lot of fun

Man, I can’t believe another year is over. This past year really seemed to fly by, and since

it was our region’s 50th anniversary, there were a number of great events that helped make this year memorable. We had our Anniversary Dinner in Burlington, MA with Derek Daley as the high-light of the evening. This was then followed by the “Best Ramble Ever,” in my humble opinion of course, that had excellent weather and roads. We then had the Seymour Lisker Pentathlon, which turned out to be a whole bunch of fun. Finally, there was our Concours d’Elegance at The Elms, which was nothing less than spectacular. I want to thank everyone on the 50th Anniver-sary Committee for all of his or her hard work. As I did at the Annual Gala, I want to especially thank Michelle Wang for all of her help throughout the year. Thanks to her dedication and perseverance our club had a 50th to remember. This is important since we now seem to be embraced in winter’s icy grip and many of us won’t be driving our cars

anytime soon. Being unemployed, I did have the opportu-nity to drive the Green Machine a few times in December. You remember those days, it was in the fifties and sunny. The roads were dry and I took full advantage of the fact that while every-one else was toiling away at work I could terrorize the highways. Actually, I did not really terrorize anyone since I was constantly being passed by mini-vans. My track car is all tucked away for the winter. I have put STABIL in the gas tank and hooked the battery to a trickle charger. I also made sure I had a large quantity of mothballs on hand to help thwart any rodent colonization attempt. There is nothing that mice love more than a Porsche 911 that has been parked for the winter. They have an uncanny ability to squeeze their way into places you never thought possible. My hope is that the mothballs act as a deterrent, but I have also taken the precaution of leaving some mouse poison out for them to feast on. I was contemplating driving the Green Machine

take as long as I thought it would, the Internet sure makes life a breeze when it comes to this hobby. Years ago I used The Boston Globe, The New York Times and a couple of times The Los Angeles Times, to get the word out on a car. Not only was it expensive but it seemed to take forever to sell anything. Times have really changed; I love it. A couple of weeks later I got a call about an early 911, stripped but was solid, that a shop in Weymouth was looking to move to someone else’s garage. It was a ’72 E with suspension, alloy wheels, that elusive ’72 right-side oil tank, and little else. No glass, no doors, no interior, this was a tub in its simplest sense that could not be left outside. A quick drive down Rt. 3 with a trailer and I was standing next to it. We came to an agreeable number and the shop owner went to get the title. That was unusual in itself, as most of these old cars built before 1973 don’t have titles, but imagine my surprise when I recognized the name on the paperwork. This was a silver 911E that had also been autocrossed back in the mid

‘70s when we used to drive out to Orange Airport in Orange, Mass. I didn’t run in that class but I do remember the car as it flew over the runway course. It was really fast and really pretty at the time. A lot had changed over the years. This tub was certainly

restorable but a lot of work lay ahead for the next owner, certainly not me. I have come across a number of other Porsches that I have competed against over the years. There was a dark green 914 that was the first one to show up with 50-series tires at an autocross while the rest of us were on the taller 60-series. I remember how low it looked, I was sure that it would handle better than mine, but it didn’t. I saw the car out behind a gas station in Millis, MA a few years ago, those same low profile tires still on it. The chassis was rusted so badly after sitting outside for twenty years that the doors wouldn’t open. There was Little Red, a Speedster that came through my garage a few years back. It had raced against my ’58 back in the day and while fast and loud, didn’t get the job done then but it did leave a little money on the table this time to keep the survivors in parts. There was a 911R that ran in our Wintercross

I am always amazed at how small our world really is when we’re talking about old cars. Of

course some of the cars weren’t old when I first came across them. Now, many years later, the ’old Porsches‘ that roll through my driveway have seen the battle scars of years of driving and, for many, competition. I got a call a couple of months ago from a friend who spotted (to give full credit, his son found it) a 1970 914/6 in a driveway about a mile from his house. It had been sitting out for a short time and looked like it was all there, not a project. I told him to check on it to see if it was for sale and he came back to me with the name of the owner. It was a PCA member who had competed in our autocross series back in the late ‘70s. I re-member the car because, while not in same class as my four-cylinder ’76 914, I always watched to see if I could beat him. It was a faster car after all, so it was always fun to have better times. I had spent a lot of years in the seat of my car so I actu-ally had an advantage. As it turned out, the owner

related the history of the car and mentioned its competition at those events. The trouble was that the seller figured that he got beat all those years ago because all the “pros were cheating,” so he quit going. I have to say in our own defense that back in the late ‘70s we didn’t know enough to cheat. There were no sticky tires available, wider wheels were too expensive and we didn’t know enough about fuel injection to mess with it. With that mind-set it was clear to me that my friend was going to have to negotiate a purchase price with the owner without me in the picture. Like Eastwood said years ago, “a man has to know his limitations.” That got done in short order and it wasn’t long before I was standing next to that silver six that I had chased all those years ago. Actually I guess he chased me but it was fun to see it again. Not much cleanup was needed and the digital camera was hard at work. A couple of phone calls, some e-mailed photos and the car had a new owner in Austria. It didn’t

how about this, some of you probably read your local paper’s police report on occasion. Ever won-der how the police catch these people with arrest warrants outstanding, expired or suspended license, an unregistered car, unpaid traffic tickets etc.? Sure, the in-car computer system points out that fact after the stop, but how do you think they get the person pulled over. Check out the last line of the incident, seems to always matter of factually mention, “Person was also cited for lane violation or defective equipment.” A “lane violation” usually results from not turning on your directional signal when the police pull you over. Once over on the side of the road the search is on for something suspicious. Finally, I bet you all remember the stupid hand signals you learned in driver’s ed. (no not those in our DE at a track), the ones taught by the flatfooted gym teacher who told you have to put your left arm out the window and show your anticipated direction. Well, guess what, they stopped teaching that in student driv-ing, maybe because the only people opening win-

dows these days are cigarette smokers who rendered the ashtray obsolete, and instead used the roads for that purpose. Or maybe because all these young drivers would be more confused if someone were waving their left arm out a window and expecting you to know what it meant.

Until next month, I hope all of you have a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Well here we are, with a new year and decade. Seems like just a few years ago that I joined

the club but, wow, it was 30 years ago this com-ing July. How time flies. As is the custom of the region we are welcoming three new members of the board of directors, two of whom are women and a soon to be appointed new secretary. Amy Ambrose will be serving as VP of Activities, Adri-anne Ross (no relation to me) will become our new NOR’EASTER editor commencing with this issue, and Chris Mongeon will take over as Trea-surer. As you may or may not know, the region bylaws only allow for a term of two consecutive years for an officer, except for past president who is not actually elected, thus the turnover from year to year. Two thousand ten is pretty well set as far as major driving events are concerned — a first, es-pecially in the DE area, as all the tracks have come back with dates earlier than normal. There is great news on the autocross side too, as Devens has offered us another date and we have graciously

accepted the offer. The Ramble was planned long ago, of course, and our Ramble Masters Bruce and Joyce just need to put the finishing touches on it and handle registration, which commences this month. (See the promo and entry form elsewhere in this issue). Our annual planning meeting to be held early in January will fill in the other available slots so that the region will again offer something for everyone, as has been the case for a long time. Now, time to ramble on about some pet peeves. Does anyone else notice how many cars have a headlight out in the winter (when we seem to do much more driving at night than in other seasons)? Don’t expect anyone to get a ticket, as I do believe the local law enforcement people have given up on equipment citations. Our recent snowstorm prior to X-mas again showed how uneducated the populace is when it comes to winter driving. Even though modern cars have incredible electronic controls to help the most bone-headed driver keep a straight path, they still manage to nail solid objects with ease. Or

This meeting of the NER PCA board was held on December 12th at the home of John and Dot

Bergen. Also in attendance were: Dick Anderson, Joyce Brinton, Karen and Bob Cohen, Bruce Hau-ben, Jill Maserian, Steve Ross, Tom Tate, Dave and Susana Weber, and new board members Amy Am-brose, Adrianne Ross and Chris Mongeon. Absent was Chris Ryan who was unable to attend. After enjoying a delicious Italian dinner, John called the meeting to order promptly at 7:21 pm. John began the President’s report by welcoming incoming board members to their first official meeting. Amy Ambrose will serve as Activities Chair, Adrianne Ross as NOR’EASTER Editor, and Chris Mongeon as Treasurer. Next, John men-tioned that the Zone 1 Presidents’ meeting that took place on November 14th-15th and asked if anyone had questions about the meeting min-utes, which he had circulated in advance. Other than to discuss the club’s insurance for driving instructors at track events, there were no other questions. By way of other updates, the new computer for the incoming editor was expected to arrive by the 16th. John will load and test the software and printer configuration to prepare it for Adrianne’s use in producing the NOR’EASTER. He announced that the board has found a pos-sible replacement for the NER Secretary position. Lastly, John made a motion to approve the new board members. Dave seconded the motion and the vote received unanimous approval. Steve provided the Activities update by stating that many 2010 events are already lined up. Some highlights include a run down of autocross and DE events. The autocross season will begin April 6th

and the DE roster is posted in the NOR’EASTER. The February event will consist of “An Evening with Leonard Turner” at the Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation on the 13th. Steve proposed a tour of the Bose Corp. in March. Chris will follow up to confirm. The NewComers meeting will be held in April. With that, Steve turned things over to Bruce to provide more details about DE. Bruce con-firmed that e-mail reminders have been sent out to announce Calabogie dates. He recommended that those who plan to attend should make hotel reservations early since accommodations in the location are limited. It was also noted that last year some people rented houses in the area, so people may want to consider renting houses as another option. The expectation is that it will be a popular

event since it will be promoted in several re-gions, including Allegheny. To wrap up his piece, Bruce noted that he is working to secure lodging options at Mont-Tremblant hotels, and that the destination site for the 2011 Ramble has been identified. Chris Ryan provided the Administrative report in advance of the meeting. John read some highlights, beginning with an update on the Annual Gala that was held on December 5th at The International golf club in Bolton, MA. There were 100 attendees. Many door prizes and other gifts were awarded. The Paul Russell & Company tour in January is already sold out, with over 40 people on a waiting list. The February offering at the Larz Anderson Museum will appear in the NOR’EASTER. A Tech session will be held in March, with dates and times forthcoming. Then the New-Comers meeting will be held in April. Next, John called for the Treasurer’s report and asked if there were any questions regarding the financial statements, which had been circulated in advance of the meeting. Overall, club finances were break-even. Bruce made a request for detail on income and expenses by event. A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report and finan-cials as submitted. The motion was seconded and

take it the second year (this would be after all the hosts of our events came to realize that we were so desperate for activities that Chris would bribe them to give us an event). At the end of the second year Chris and I would re-evaluate to see if we might do it all over again for another term. One of the responsibilities of the position is to write a monthly column, another is to put to-gether copy promoting an upcoming event, as well as writing about an event after it had occurred. We decided I would write the monthly column and Chris would do the promoting and the review of the event. For those of you in the know, you know regrettably, that it was this very decision that I would write the monthly column, that would even-tually lead Dave Weber to seek retirement as our Editor and Chief of the NOR’EASTER. Not that he was tired after 22 years of holding the position. Other responsibilities included planning for the Annual Banquet in December and organizing such other events as the NER Auction plus attending monthly NER Board meeting. I have to say that for the most

part the position has been a lot of fun. The first year was a bit of a learning ex-perience and trying to come up with new locations wasn’t as easy as I thought it might be. The other nice thing is that I never had to worry about signing up for an event since we were the ones planning the event. When the second year rolled around

and Chris assumed the title of Administrative VP not much changed from the first year ex-cept that I am sure there was a collective sigh from the Board that thank God Chris was now in charge. Though I tried to do my best, and for the most part think I accomplished that, Chris is a natural when it comes to organizing and mak-ing sure all the I’s are dotted and the T’s crossed. If there is one thing I will be remembered for in accepting the position of Administrative VP in 2008 its that I brought Chris Ryan onboard. To that end I must say that Chris ranks up there with Dave Weber, Steve Ross, Bruce Haupen and John Bergen for the monthly devotion they exhibit to making this club work month-in and month-out. As an aside to this I just want to mention that Chris has signed on for another year as Administrative VP with me as his faithful sidekick Tonto. So let us look back on some of the activities we all enjoyed this past year. In January we had the tour of KTR Motorsports. If there is any one

Well another year has come to a close and I guess it would be OK to take a moment to

reflect back on 2009 and many of the monthly ac-tivities that Chris Ryan and I and others were able to coordinate for your entertainment and pleasure. Two years ago Steve Ross approached me to see if I would have an interest in becoming Administra-tive VP of the club. After a considerable amount of thought and angst on the subject I really didn’t want to say no, but at the same time I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to dedicate the time and effort I thought the position would require. At this point, I contacted Chris Ryan and inquired if he would have an interest in sharing the position with me. Before Chris would agree he wanted to be sure he knew exactly what the position would entail and what he would be getting himself into. I also had talk to Steve Ross to make sure that the board would not have an objection to Chris and I sharing the responsibility of Administrative VP. Steve once again reviewed the responsibilities of the position and said that, although shar-

ing the position was not something that had been done before he couldn’t see why-not, and would check with other members of the board to see if anyone would have an objection. A few days later I heard back from Steve that the board would be OK with it, but that there was nothing in the rules that would allow for Co-Administrative VPs. One of us would have to assume the title of Ad-ministrative VP, thereby receiving all the accolades, glamour, and the huge amount of bribes you receive daily from individuals and shops looking to sponsor and host one of our events. The other unfortunately would have to live incognito, far from the spotlight, in the shadows, with little or no recognition for the time and effort they would put into making sure we all have some place to go to every month. I contacted Chris and after discussing how we could divide the responsibilities we both agreed to take the position. What Chris and I decided was that since it was only supposed to be a two-year position I would assume the title the first year, (I am a sucker for fame and glory), and Chris would

complement of Dallas passengers. At this point I should mention that I was an Executive Platinum traveler with American Airlines, having done a sig-nificant amount of business travel, and was using frequent flier points to travel in first class. Sitting directly behind me was Ethel Kennedy, Bobby’s widow, and her personal assistant, a lovely young woman whose name escapes me. Suddenly, the flight attendant call signal began to ring repeat-edly in staccato fashion. Little did I know, the real fun was about to begin. I became vaguely aware of some commotion a couple of seats behind me between a flight attendant and a passenger but thought little of it until the flight attendant walked stridently to the cockpit. Soon thereafter, the third officer returned with the flight atten-dant and had a friendly chat with a very drunk redneck in a cowboy hat. Things seemed to return to normal after that until Mrs. Kennedy’s assistant tapped me on the shoulder and confided that the redneck was repeatedly kicking Mrs. Kennedy’s seat and that she was frightened. I turned to Mrs.

Kennedy and offered to swap seats with her but she didn’t want to do anything that might further upset the man. Once again some commotion erupt-ed between the cowboy and the flight attendant, resulting in her second march to the cockpit. This time howev-

er, it was interrupted by a pillow to the back of her head hurled by the cowboy! Within seconds, the third officer emerged from the cockpit brandish-ing handcuffs and sat next to our redneck until we made an unscheduled landing somewhere in New Mexico where we were boarded by the police who escorted our unruly passenger off of the plane. We arrived in Phoenix about six hours late but with a pretty good story to tell. Finally, as I bring this column to a close, Spyker Cars N.V. is taking a second shot at trying to buy Saab from GM. A Dutch company, Spyker is 30% owned by a Russian banking tycoon and sold 43 cars last year, all priced in the vicinity of $250K. I don’t know GM’s asking price, but this would seem to me to be a rather ambitious undertaking. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds.

On the heels of the ‘blizzard of 2009’ I’m pleased to report that, as we’ve now come

to expect, Ann’s beloved M-35X performed like a Hummer in a mud pit. Off to a holiday cocktail party on Sunday afternoon, our driveway plow nowhere in sight, the AWD Infiniti/Blizzak combo once again proved unstoppable. In fact, the only thing that slowed us down on our way to Manchester-by-the-sea, were the ’conga lines‘ of plows and sand trucks on I-93 and Rt. 128. It’s the best winter car we’ve ever owned, bar none. Recently, Ann and I returned from Seattle after visiting son Adam and wife Kelly. The occa-sion was a baby shower for our soon-to-be first grandchild (a girl!). Our experience on United Airlines was fine but I continue to be amazed by passenger behavior. Something happens to people when they travel by air (much like when they drive in traffic) that materially changes their personalities. While nothing egregious occurred between Boston and Seattle and back, I was reminded of a

trip I took to visit Sarah when she was a student at Arizona State back in 2000. I was on Ameri-can Airlines, flying from Boston to Dallas then connecting to Phoenix. As we neared DFW, our Captain announced that due to thunderstorms we’d be circling for an indeterminate period of time. That period of time turned out to be over an hour and we were finally diverted to some God-forsaken regional airport. I say God-forsaken because there was no jet bridge or stairs to allow us to disembark to stretch our legs, no catering to replenish the snacks and drinks and — are you ready for this? — no facility to enable refueling of our plane! We waited close to three hours for a fuel truck to arrive from who knows where. Once refueled, now four hours late, we headed for Dal-las. As you might imagine, the Dallas passengers who were waiting to board the continuation of this flight to Phoenix were none too happy either. After a ’pit stop‘ that would have made the Woods Brothers proud, we were once again airborne, and on our way to Phoenix with a fresh

inches of snow and have more on the way. Just yesterday Joyce and I cleared out the garage for our annual squeezing of four vehicles into a three-car garage, and I put the snows on the already AWD Volvo. If you’ve never seen a GT3, 993, Volvo XC70 and F350 crew-cab long-bed in a three-car garage, you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s really our acknowledgement that winter is truly upon us and we can start looking forward to an annual winter trip to warm weather and planning for the upcoming track season. Now you understand the origins of the beginning of this article. A brief reminder re: the 2010 Ramble. Registra-tion information will along in the next few weeks via e-mail, NOR’EASTER and the website www.porschenet.com. I’m expecting to sell out the Mountain View Grand; we’ll ‘own’ the resort and keep out the non-PCA riff-raff. We have broken out the rooms by category with different pricing for up-graded rooms, all of which is to say that you want to register early. As great as last year’s

Ramble to Cooperstown was, you don’t want to miss this one. So sign up as soon as you can for the best choice of rooms and to ensure your space on the 2010 Ramble.Among all the detritus on my desk — but I know where everything is hidden — is an obit from the Globe

two weeks ago that is a constant reminder of the frailty of our lives. My cardiologist at the Brigham (I know, don’t get me started about all the dif-ferent docs I see… but my health is excellent) Dr. Kenneth Baughman, was recently struck and killed by a driver while running in the early morn-ing during an AHA meeting in Orlando. He was six years younger than I and, although we only saw each other on a yearly basis, he felt like a friend. He’d always ask about my Porsche racing — he was sincerely interested — and wanted to see pictures that I had to bring with me, and I’d ask about his triathlon races. I’m usu-ally a fairly jaded person but this affected me and I found myself joining several hundred at his memorial service last week in Wellesley. A friend (also a doc) said the other night, “At least he died doing what he loved,” but to die in that way is somehow just not right. Not to stay on the morbid/sordid side of things, but I guess I am, some of you may have become

Porter Airlines — ever heard of them? Joyce flies with them between Boston and Toronto

and loves ‘em. She reports that they’re like Jet Blue with lots of pitch, serve free snacks in a very comfortable and spacious waiting area and on-board, fares are “cheap” compared with any other airline, and they fly into Toronto’s City Center Airport, only a few minutes from downtown. So what’s this got to do with Porsches? Well, they also fly from Boston to Ottawa, Montreal and Mont-Tremblant. So, for those of you considering flying to the Calabogie and/or Mont-Tremblant area, you’ve got more choices now. More reasons not to miss either event in July, 2010. If you’re thinking about Calabogie on July 8th–10th, I suggest that you get your room res-ervations ASAP, as I’ve done. I’m expecting a larger turnout than last year and you don’t want to be left out. There’re not a huge number of rooms in the immediate area, so buyer beware. Of course there are surrounding towns with inns

and motels, and thirty minutes from the track is really no different than the Mosport experience. You’re on your own at Calabogie for accommoda-tions; it simply is not a place where I can wield any weight. Several of our drivers have rented very nice homes, which is another possibility. The more people sharing the space, the lower the individual cost. A normal Google or Bing search brings up plenty of sites. LCMT is another situation as there are so many hotels, condos and inns and I’m working on great rates and already have an agreement with des Voyageur and de la Montagne; The Fairmont and Westin will be along shortly. If you haven’t joined us in the past during the Blues Festival, it is an event not to be missed. Seven days of non-stop music on four different stages, and around 11:00 pm bands move into various bars and clubs until they close… and it’s all free. It’s one of those events for which you want to come early and stay late. As I’m writing this column, we’ve gotten six

Tour Of Paul Russell & CompanySaturday, January 9th Starting @ 10:00 AM

It’s that time again… time to tour Paul Russell and Company, one of the world’s finest auto-mobile restoration shops, located here in Essex, MA. NER holds this event every other year

or so, and it never fails to “sell out!” This place is truly special – and you would be hard pressed to find another restoration shop so committed to restoring and in some cases, re-creating fine examples of automotive art and technology with such attention to detail. During past visits, we have heard many stories of how original techniques, employed by the craftsmen who originally hand-built these cars, are used today to achieve the ultimate in authentic restorations. To quote Paul Russell from an article which appeared in the January 2008 edition of Car Collector, “… It is history we are dealing with and we are not rewriting the story but putting it back the way it was, doing the work with a real focus on authenticity, and that is a great evolution, that’s how far we’ve come in 30 years.” A visit to Paul Russell always includes the opportunity to see the most rare and exquisite cars — classic Mercedes, Bugattis, pristine early Porsches, Ferraris and more. This is the shop that Ralph Lauren and Jerry Seinfeld rely on to restore or preserve their classics. Starting in 1978 as the Gullwing Service Company, Paul Russell has always maintained the highest standards in servicing every aspect of their clients’ cars. Our host at Paul Russell is 30+ year PCA and NER member Alex Finigan. A founder and partner of Paul Russell and Company, Alex is still a down to earth, totally committed car guy. His pas-sion for and knowledge of all aspects of classic cars is immediately apparent and he gives an excellent and informative tour. Alex will guide us through the whole restoration process from disassembly, panel building, mechanical, paint and, finally, to reassembly. Be prepared to be astonished. This event is limited to 100 members, and is always oversubscribed. Reservations must be made in advance; please contact Chris Ryan at 978 772 9546 or (preferably) e-mail: [email protected]. Reservations will be taken in the order received, so be sure to reserve early. If you have been accepted, but a subsequent conflict prevents you from attending, please inform Chris Ryan, so other members can attend. I will send out confirmation by e-mail to all who have registered shortly after the registration deadline. Our tour will start promptly at 10:00 am, and Alex would like us to be finished by noon. Coffee and donuts will be provided by NER. Please remember that photographs cannot be taken inside the shop.

Directions: Paul Russell and Company is located at 106 Western Avenue, Essex, MA 01929. Telephone (978) 768-6092. Follow Route 128 North to Exit 15, labeled “Manchester/Essex.” Turn left at the ramp stop sign, crossing over Rte. 128 toward Essex. Follow this tree-lined road (School St.) for about five minutes into Essex, where you come to a stop sign. Turn left (West) onto Route 133. Go approximately a half-mile (past restaurants and antique shops). Leaving the Periwinkle Restaurant on your right, turn left (South) off Rte. 133 onto Route 22. Approximately a half-mile along Rte. 22 you will see on your left a sign for 106 Western Avenue, “Gullwing Service Company dba Paul Russell and Company.” (If you come upon the Essex Build-ing Center on your left, go back.) The entryway passes over a small stream. Our front entrance is at the far right end of the complex, around the corner at the top of a small rise. We are about 4.5 miles from Route 128.

Tour Is oversubscribed - Reservations are being taken for wait list only. Contact Chris Ryan: [email protected] to be placed on the wait list.

Leonard Turner is the Chief Photographer for PCA’s Panorama magazine, and all of you are familiar with the high quality cover shots, as well as inside content of our club’s great magazine.

Leonard joined PCA in 1964 when he bought the 356SC coupe that still resides in his garage alongside Betty Jo’s 968. President of Peachstate region in 1967, he was national Activities chairman in 1969–1970, and has made a major contribution to Porsche Panorama as its chief photographer and darkroom boss since 1970, most recently overseeing the transition to the digital dark-room. His photographs have been published in many books and magazines including Porsche: Portrait of a Legend, Porsche Spe-cials, Porsche: the 4-Cylinder, 4-Cam Sports & Racing Cars, Porsche: The Fine Art of the Sports Car, Carrera RS, Autoweek, Road & Track, Automobile, Christophorus and Auto Motor und Sport.Leonard was Zone 3 Representative from 1969–1988, has twice been chairman of the National Nominating Committee, has served on the Policy Committee since 1975, and was chairman of the 1988 Long Range Planning Committee. Leonard is retired from a 35-year practice in internal medicine and nephrology in the Atlanta area. Spare daylight hours were immediately seized by the graphics department of Porsche Panorama. So plan to join us on Saturday evening, February 13th, 6:00 PM, at Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline (site of the famous NER auction). Leonard has many fascinating stories to share about behind the scenes happenings surrounding many of his photo-graphs, as well as other adventures around the globe that he and his wife Betty Jo, Chief Editor, have enjoyed over the years in the course of producing Porsche Panorama. This will be an evening event. We will have a cash bar and snacks on hand, with time to socialize with fellow PCA members, and to meet and chat with Leonard in person before and after the presentation. You can pre-register for this event by e-mailing Chris Ryan at [email protected], or filling out and mailing the form below. To help with the planning, please register by Monday Feb. 8th.

Ladies, gentlemen and younger drivers… if you’ve ever dreamed of driving your Porsche at speed, feeling exhila-

rated by its performance and testing your mettle, we invite you to get a leap on our upcoming track season by attending Thrill Rides 2010 on Sunday, February 21st. This is NER’s annual intro-duction to our Driver Education program, graciously hosted by Joe Marko of HMS Motorsport at HMS’s great facility in Danvers, MA. Directions can be found at www.hmsmotorsport.com/info. This interactive classroom session will give you a great overview of NER’s on-track driving program. We’ll discuss the fundamentals of high-performance track driving and how these techniques can be applied to improve your everyday street driving. You’ll hear how to prepare for an event, how and where our events are held and, most of all, you’ll learn how much fun it all is. You’ll also get an informative handout to jog your memory when all else fails. Driver Education events are by no means “for men only.” Each year, a growing number of female and younger drivers attend these events. So, all you ladies, teens and twenty-somethings, this is a special invitation for you to join us on February 21st. In addition to presenting general information on our Driver Educa-tion program, we’ll have special sections in the presentation that are specifically aimed at you! Advanced registration for this popular event is strongly suggested. Check-in and a continental breakfast will begin at 9:30 am, followed by our presentation from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon. You’ll also have ample time to see the practical and fun stuff that HMS has to offer, including helmets, gloves, harnesses and other safety equipment. At the end of the program, HMS will host a pizza lunch. Sure, February 21st is a Sunday morning in the deep mid-winter but before you know it, your fellow Porschephiles will be driving on exciting tracks next spring while you’re fertilizing the lawn, wishing you’d taken us up on this offer. So, please mark the date on your calendar and join us…! And remember, attending this Ground School in no way obligates you to sign up for a DE event. We do hope, however, that you agree the only way to truly experience and appreciate what you and your Porsche are capable of doing is to drive it on a road-racing track. Questions? — e-mail [email protected].

Who should attend?Anyone interested in learning about our 2010 Driver Education program and improving their driving. While everyone is welcomed to register for Thrill Rides 2010, drivers participating in NER’s Driver Education events must be current PCA members, have a valid driver’s license, and be 18 years or older.

It’s that time again. Time to find a warm day to wash and wax the street Porsche and get your registration in the mail for this year’s Spring Ramble. We’re again sponsored by the good guys at European Performance Engineering in Natick, MA; give them a call (508.277.3819) for anything from an oil change to a full street to track conversion. And if you’re one of those with

only (times are tough) a dedicated track Porsche, or maybe in between Porsches, use your dually, MDX, SRX, RAV, CRV, LS, M, XJ, XF or whatever, ‘cause you don’t want to miss this event. The layout of the public areas of the Mountain View Grand are such that we intend to sell out the hotel — all 144 rooms and suites — own the resort, keep out the non-Porsche riff-raff, and have the place to ourselves. To encourage everyone who’s ever considered trying one of these Rambles for the first time, I’ve been able to roll back the calendar to 2005 pricing. I’m hoping that everyone who’d like to join us is able to. If you’re not a masochist enjoying wait lists, get your registration check and form to me EARLY, and the suites will most likely sell out fast as well. The Mountain View Grand is the 6th of the “Historic Hotels of America” that we’re visiting in the Ramble’s recent history. Check out their website, www.mountainviewgrand.com, for full details including the Spa, Health & Wellness Center (one of the best resort gyms I’ve seen), indoor pool/whirlpool & sauna, farm, horseback riding, hiking, fantastic movie theater with giant leather reclin-ers and a 500 movie DVD selection (I have the list), and descriptions of their luxury suites should you decide to spend a few extra bucks on one of them. After arriving Thursday or Friday on your own, we’ll all convene at 7:30 am in the Crystal Ballroom on Saturday for registration, Continental Breakfast and drivers’ meeting, and be on the road by 9:00 am, heading to our lunch stop via wonderful back roads in NH and VT. NER’s 50th Anniversary Finale - The Annual DinnerCopy By Chris Ryan, Photos By Dave Weber

NER Members and their spouses gathered once again for this year’s NER Annual Banquet at The International in Bolton. In spite of a threat of snowfall, 100 guests

dressed up and braved the cold to get together and share some good food and drink with their Porsche friends. The staff at The International was happy to welcome the NER back. They had the fireplace going in the bar and Vic Paul was on the piano in the entry foyer as guests began to arrive. It didn’t take long for the room to fill and, by popular request, guests had an extra half-hour to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before sitting down to dinner. There was an unusually large supply of door prizes this year, with extra loot that had been generated from various 50th An-niversary events that had taken place throughout the year, so, promptly at 8 pm, as soon as people took their seats for dinner, Chris Ryan took the podium to start the ceremonies. First and foremost was an important Thank You to sponsors of various NER events, especially Jerry Pellegrino of EPE and Mike Noonan of Mike’s Autobody, who were in attendance, and for whom the crowd gave a round of applause in appreciation for all they do for the club in supporting our activities. Thanks also went out in absentia to Rick Heatherington of Autobahn Performance, Steve Uliss of Firefly’s, Kenny Conway of Conway Motorworks, Joe Marko or HMS, and IRA Porsche. Chris then called a number of door prize winners to the prize table to start claiming various goodies, before introducing President John Bergen to kick off the evening with his own welcome. John began with the traditional thanking retiring board mem-bers Jill Maserian, Steve Ross, Karen Cohen and Dave Weber,

followed by an introduction of current board members Bruce Hauben, Chris Ryan, Bob Canter and Dick Anderson, including new members Amy Ambrose (VP Activities), Chris Mongeon (Treasurer), and Adrianne Ross (a relatively new NER member who has stepped up to fill the position or NOR’EASTER editor, being vacated by Dave Weber after 25 years of service in this position). John also gave a special thanks to Michelle Wang,

Next up was Bruce Hauben, who has stepped up once again as Track Chair. Bruce began by thanking the members of the Track Committee, Joyce Brinton, Peter Tracy, Steve Artick, Mat-thew Wallace, Stan Corbett, Chris Outzen, Dick Anderson, Moe Auger and Ray Bahr. These folks worked hard to put together another terrific DE season in 2009, and the crowd showed their ap-preciation with a round of applause. As we continued with dessert, John was up at the podium once again to announce this year’s special awards. This year’s most improved driver award went to Bill Davison, who took home a handsome award for his efforts. Geoff Kronik was honored for his contributions as newslet-ter contributor, followed by John receiving the Seymour Lisker Award — given to members enduring certain hardships through the year in connection with their participation in NER

who did a fabulous job of spearheading all of the exceptional 50th Anniversary activities that were enjoyed by NER members throughout the past year. Following a group photo, everyone returned to the tables as dinner was served. Members then settled in to enjoy their Grilled NY Sirloin, Chicken International, or Herb-Seared Salm-on, while the snow gently accumulated outside and Vic Paul’s Trio entertained us from the bandstand. As we finished up our meals, it was time for presentation of awards. First up were Ron Mann and Cuan Coulter. Cuan will be taking over the duties of Autocross Chair from Ron next year, which is greatly appreci-ated. They began by thanking Jon Cowen, who does a great job as registrar helping run NER autocross events at Devens all year long. This year’s awards (some nice looking helmet bags) were then handed out to the autocross Class Winners Joe Kraetsch, Tom Tate, Gary Hebner, Bill Seymour and Glenn Champagne. Awards were also announced in absentia to Fran O’Day, George Rouhart, Oliver Lucier, Jake Moreau and Kenny Conway.

as Editor of the region’s newsletter, the NOR’EASTER, Dave Weber is retiring. Dave and his wife Susanna have made this magazine one of the best in the PCA during that time, and in doing so he has become an integral part in all this club’s activities and in making NER the successful organization it has been. After accepting a special gift of appreciation from John, Dave gave us a short speech thanking the crowd, who responded with a well-deserved standing ovation for him. Of course Dave isn’t leaving the club, just step-ping down as editor, and we look forward to seeing him at club events for years to come. Thanks to Dave for a job well done. The business portion of the evening concluded, members had a chance to resume their conversations with friends, while Vic Paul’s band kept the music flow-ing. Folks took to the dance floor and enjoyed some more socializing time before braving the snow to make their way home. NER wishes to thank the staff of The

Production of New Panamera Already Reaches 10,000 Mile-stone Atlanta/Stuttgart/Leipzig, December 14, 2009—Just three months after it went on sale in Europe and less than two after its debut in the U.S., the 10,000th Panamera rolled off the pro-duction line at Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, Germany. The 10,000 Panamera is a 500 HP platinum silver metallic Panamera Turbo, which is set to be delivered to a customer in Singapore. “Sales of the Panamera have really taken off: we have already secured over 9,000 orders,” said Michael Macht, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG. Macht also pointed out that the Panamera has earned praise throughout the industry and has won several coveted awards, including Playboy’s “Car of the Year”, Edmunds Inside Line’s “Editors Most Wanted” and Bloomberg’s “Car of the Year”. In breaking down what customers are ordering, Porsche says the Panamera 4S is proving particularly popular and has a share of 44 percent, which is ahead of the Turbo (36 percent) and the Panamera S (20 percent).

The fourth Porsche model series is manufactured at the Leipzig plant, sharing a production line with the Cayenne SUV. The innovative, highly streamlined production process is seen as a model of technological and economic excellence for the automobile industry worldwide

Bloomberg Names The New Porsche Panamera its 2009 Car of The Year ATLANTA, Dec. 10, 2009 - Bloomberg News today announced the 2010 Porsche Panamera as its Car of the Year for 2009. This is Bloomberg’s first-ever Car of the Year selections, with seven categories in all, including Car of the Year, Green Car, Economy, Family, All-Around SUV, Sports Car and Executive Sedan. All eligible contenders were evaluated by Bloomberg’s weekly auto columnist, Jason H. Harper, who drives and tests hun-dreds of luxury, sports and alternative-fuel autos each year. The selectees were evaluated in terms of overall performance, intelligent design and smart style, desirability and build quality. To qualify, models must have been new or significantly revised for model year 2010, and be on sale by the first quarter of 2010

(article link: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/spend/auto.html). “The Porsche Panamera has broken the sports-sedan category wide open, producing a truly desirable auto that combines the best elements of a sports car and comfortable four-door,” Harp-er said. “Fast and fun, the Panamera is a car with real appeal.” Porsche’s first four-door car and the company’s fourth model line went on sale in October, joining the company’s successful stable of performance thoroughbreds: the mid-engine Boxster and Cayman, the Cayenne SUV and the iconic 911 Carrera. The Bloomberg recognition comes on the heals of the Panam-era receiving an Edmunds Inside Line Editors’ Most Wanted 2010 trophy at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show (article link: http://www.insideline.com/features/2010-edmunds-inside-line-edi-tors-most-wanted-awards.html).

All Three Panamera Models Deliver High Performance and Low Fuel Consumption Initially offered in three versions - the 400-horsepower, two-wheel drive Panamera S and all-wheel drive Panamera 4S, and the 500-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, all-wheel drive Pana-

mera Turbo - the new Panamera provides Porsche performance and quality, as well as a level of comfort absent among true high-performance cars. The Panamera is the first premium car to feature an automatic engine start/stop system used in conjunction with seven-speed double-clutch transmission. This system saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a stop light. All engines have advanced and fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), as well. Porsche engineers also focused on weight savings and lightweight technologies to further enhance fuel efficiency. As a result, the Panamera S and Panamera 4S deliver 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway (19 mpg combined), while the Panamera Turbo achieves 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway (18 mpg combined). Amazingly, these figures were achieved without activating the standard auto start/stop system. All Panamera models are not subject to the gas guzzler tax and provide the best fuel economy in their competitive set. The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Pana-mera S is $89,800, while the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo retails for $93,800 and $132,600, respectively

Series back in college. It was one of about 20 built, and the only car that wasn’t originally painted white. Twenty-six years later I was standing in a restoration shop here in the Boston area as I listened to the owner describe the customer’s 911R in primer that he was told to paint white. He was trying to convince the owner to keep it the original color, as it was the only one like it. It was the car that I had stood next to in a parking lot a genera-tion before. I’m sure that we all wonder what happened to those cars that we saw in our youth. Some of us are lucky and stumble across them years later. Others have kept a few and enjoyed them all these years. I seem to be more that just lucky. I’ve kept some and seem to find the others. Or maybe they find me. KTF

thing that seems to attract the biggest participation, it is when we visit a restoration shop and KTR did not disappoint. In February we had the 50th Anniversary dinner to which all the cred-it here rightly goes to Michelle Wang and Betsey Mae Mosley, and all the people who assisted them. Having Derek Daly as the guest speaker was exceptional and very much enjoyed by all who attended. In March we had Tech Topics at Autobahn in Peabody and owner Rick Heatherington did a great job of answering any and all ques-tions presented to him. In April there was the Autocross School led by Ron Mann, the Newcomers Meeting sponsored by Ira Porsche, and the 2009 New England Ramble (thank you Bruce and Joyce). In May we had a South Shore Rally and then Brunch at Firefly’s in Quincy which happens to be owned by fellow NER member Steve Uliss. In June there was Tech Topics at Mike’s Autobody in Malden and 50th Anniversary Seymour Lisker Memorial Rally and Picnic. In July we had nothing planned because you were to busy either attending Parade, Autocrossing or up in Canada DEing at Mont Tremblant and Calabogie. In August there was Polo at the Myopia Hunt Club and in September there was the 2009 Concours at the Elms in Newport, (thank you again Michelle and the 50th committee). October brought a tour of Precision Auto Restoration in Newburyport which turned out to be one of the highlights of this past year and definitely will be on our agenda to visit again in future years. November brought the NER Auction at the Boston Museum of Transportation at Lars Anderson Park with our own NER member as auctioneer Tom Tate. If you haven’t had the op-portunity to hear Tom you are missing a real treat. I guarantee he will make you laugh. Last but not least this brings us to December and our Annual Banquet which this year was held at the Interna-tional in Bolton Ma. Great food, great company and a great way to end 2009. And if this was not enough for you in between all of these events there was a full season of Autocrossing and Drivers Education events plus the occasional Zone 1 event. What’s that? You don’t think that there was anything to do in 2009 being a member of NER. You’re kidding right?

aware of the federal investigation into Gregory Loles alleg-edly (like that legally correct word) embezzling an as yet to be determined amount (reputed to be more than $1 Mil.) from his church and some individual investors. Mr. Loles is the money and control behind the successful Farhnbacher-Loles racing and their shop in Danbury, CT. Maybe crime doesn’t pay but it did seem to win races. It’s another example of how something’s wrong with the order of things in the universe. This is an individual with more money (supposedly) than could be spent in a lifetime and his kids’ lifetimes, so what could cause this kind of action? One of the minor (to non-PCA folk) offshoots of the situation is the temporary ‘where do we go’ situation of the Zone 1 Tech Tactics event on the last weekend in February. That has just been an-swered by Danbury Porsche, the 2010 Tech Tactics location. And finally, a big, hearty welcome to our new editor, Adrianne Ross. Anyone willing to take on this challenge is okay in my book.

the vote was unanimously approved. Dick opened the Membership report by sharing some ques-tions that he had received during the month. One person asked whether the club would consider including the cost of the NOR’EASTER at the time of renewing membership dues. Various board members addressed the matter, citing that Post Office restrictions on our mail permit precluded combining costs. An-other person inquired about whether multi-year subscriptions were an option. Since this would require additional administra-tion, Dick would take this under consideration. Moving on, Dick provided current statistics. The number of primary members reached 1330 full members and 977 affiliates, for a total of 2307. This is up by 14 members over last month. Dave began the NOR’EASTER update by first requesting that all board members check their contact information and send changes to both he and Adrianne. He also called our attention to the production deadline schedule. As he walked through the schedule, he noted there were still a few gaps in coverage for photo taking at events and openings for more regular columns. Susana confirmed that she will stay on as Advertising chair to prepare graphic material, and Dave mentioned that John Koenig will continue to serve as copyeditor. During Adrianne’s ramp-up period, she requested that the deadlines for submis-sion of materials move up one week (to the 15th of the month) to help provide more time for production. It was also proposed, and agreed, that deadlines for content submission and produc-tion schedules will be posted to the website. For New Business a request was made to switch banks, to one that was in a convenient location for new Treasurer. This would make it easier for depositing NER checks and other banking needs. John made a motion to vote on this request. Adrianne seconded the motion. The vote was unani-mously accepted. It was also requested that Bob would obtain a copy of the tax return for the next meeting. For Old Business, Tom Tate brought up suggestions for future auctions that were based on his observations of this most recent auction as well as other past experi-ence. One idea was that people should bring things to auction to help drive vari-ety and supply of items. The board eagerly agreed to take these suggestions into consideration for future events. Bob Cohen brought handouts of his proposal for a NER PCA charitable giving program. After researching many other charitable programs, he formulated and presented a detailed recommendation for how this program could be structured within NER.

N O R E A S T E R page 27

Minutes - continued from page 8

Essentially, the proposal would enable the Past President the honor of identifying a specific charity that would be brought to the board for vote. He suggested that voluntary working committee would be formed and challenged to use new and existing fundraising ideas. For example, adding a place for do-nations during registration and providing incentives for dona-tions with 50/50 raffles. Bob also recognized Joyce, by crediting her for single-handedly implementing the very popular and successful “Taste of the Track” fundraising efforts. With that, John made a motion to approve the Charitable Giving Program proposal. Dave seconded the motion and the vote received unanimous approval. With no other business to discuss, it was determined that the next meeting of the board will be held on January 10th, 2010 at the Hauben home. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm. I also wanted to express my thanks to the board and mem-bers of the club for the opportunity to serve as Secretary for this two-year term. It has been a truly great experience get-ting to know members and the priceless friendships that have grown during this time.

road with Rottweiler-like grip. How the engine winds out, not with the Ferrari whine, but with the purr of a perfectly pitched growl that runs down my spine like liquid lightning. It’s not really a means of transportation to me, it’s a perfectly weighted, formed, and suspended monster in the middle of my car that creates a visceral experience that is somehow primitive.I hope to do a good job by all of you. Goodness knows how deeply honored I am to be given the task of Editor. A specific thank you to Dave Weber, because he’s been so patient so far, and gracefully anticipates being so in the future. I’m excited, and enthused, and inspired. I have met with the NER board once so far, and they were warm and welcoming, and generous and kind. Thank you all for making me feel so welcomed! I’m really looking forward to being a part of that team. I’m going to ground school in February, and to the first DE that opens in New Hampshire. Again, I can hardly contain my excitement about being able to legally drive as fast as my senses can take it in. And, by the way, if the guy driving the silver 911 on I-128S is out there and reads this, introduce yourself to me at an event sometime. You have given me a great gift of kindness and fun, and kindred spirit. It’s a Porsche thing.

and with all the snow we recently received it should be a white Christmas. Following Christmas, we are heading to the Cape to celebrate the New Year. Friends of ours run a great Bed and Breakfast in Centerville. We started a new tradition last year of celebrating the New Year with them and some of our other friends. It really works out well since none of us have to drive anywhere. Last year we had to drive through a pretty good snowstorm to get there. Hopefully this year the weather will be better. In closing, I want to wish all of you and your families a happy and healthy New Year! Now for the standard closing line: Well, that’s all for this month. I hope to see many of you at some of our upcoming events! If you see me, please introduce yourself and say hello, I will be trying to do the same. Until then, stay safe!
