As schools in Doha began to open up at the start of the new academic year, ISC-Doha successfully implemented new precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of our students, teachers, and staff. In coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Education, ISC-Doha added signage throughout the campus to spread awareness and act as reminders for students to wear their masks, wash their hands, and practice social distancing. Classrooms were also set up to allow for a safe distance between students, and were disinfected on a daily basis.

Virtual Online Student Life Training Conference

For the first time ever, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SABIS® Student Life Organization held its annual Student Life Training Conference online! From August 17 to 21, all SLO Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects in SABIS® schools around the world gathered online, eager to learn how to take on their roles for the upcoming 2020-2021 academic year, whether online or on campus.

Close to 300 participants attended each online session, benefiting from training on a number of important topics for their roles, including how to lead their teams, manage

It was an unforgettable experience and I’m really happy that I was able to be part of it. I learned a lot of things and skills that I will use to improve the SLO and, moreover, I will definitely need those skills in my future life.

communications, set goals and deadlines, motivate prefects, delegate tasks, and lead and manage meetings. With the uncertainties of return to campus due to the effects of COVID-19, one of the sessions focused on keeping the SLO Leadership Team proactive in a virtual school environment, to continue supporting their peers remotely while maintaining high morale.

The valuable guidance that the prefects received will help sharpen their skills and empower them to properly adapt to the diverse learning models adopted across the SABIS® Network, whether it’s online, on campus, or both. “It was an unforgettable experience and I’m really happy that I was able to be part of it. I learned a lot of things and skills that I will use to improve the SLO and, moreover, I will definitely need those skills in my future life,” commented one of the participants.

Known as the beating heart of every SABIS® school, the SLO is a student-led mini-society that offers everyone involved opportunities for academic, emotional, social, and moral growth. SLO members are active in their school and their community and lead meaningful initiatives, events, learning sessions, and more. We can confidently say, whether online or on campus, our SLO prefects are always prepared to make a difference in their school without missing a beat!

On November 12th-14th, 2020, Grade 12 students at ISC-Doha attended Georgetown’s first ever virtual MUN conference. Each student represented a specific country including Lebanon and the USA in committees such as the Human Rights Council, UNESCO, the Arab League, and the Security Council. Seniors participated in this conference with other students from different schools in Qatar, and even though they had never met, were able to discuss important social and political issues such as the Rohingya crisis, education for women in war torn countries, and the economic instability in Venezuela. Students were asked to prepare opening statements to represent their countries and worked with other students in their committee to propose resolutions for the issues they were assigned to.

The Wellness Department in the SLO organized an online breast cancer awareness campaign to educate students on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of Breast Cancer.

SLO Stories

Think Pink

Women around the world are suffering from a fatal disease, breast cancer. In 2012 alone, over 522,000 people fell victim to this disease. Currently, there is no guaranteed way to be completely shielded from the possibility of developing the cancer and breast cancer is the leading cancer developed in women.

For this reason, the Wellness Department in the Student Life Organization organized an online breast cancer awareness campaign to educate students on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of Breast Cancer. Awareness is one of the best ways to fight the disease as it encourages women to do regular testing, which increases their chances of catching the cancer in its early stages, making it easier to fight.

Online Clubs

As part of its role, the Activities Department of the SLO is responsible for creating clubs for students. Clubs are a great way to help develop student’s character and skills that will benefit them in school, their future careers, and in life. By joining clubs, students learn commitment, leadership, effective communication, and how to work successfully in a group.

Due to the pandemic, this term all clubs were organized online. The focus was to work on students’ interpersonal skills. Which is why prefects insisted on including clubs like critical thinking, debate, drama, self-care, and show & tell. Other clubs were directed towards developing students’ artistic sides like drawing, arts & crafts, dancing, photography, and chess.

Student Life Job Fair

The SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO) is an integral part of the SABIS® Educational System and plays an important role in contributing to a positive educational experience for all students. Every year, SLO prefects organize job fairs to introduce students to the organization’s nine departments – Academic, Discipline, Management, Sports, Activities, Outreach, Lower School, Social Responsibility, and Wellness—and encourage them to apply for a position within the organization.

Being a member of the SLO allows students to develop academic, managerial, organizational, and leadership skills in addition to forming circles of lasting friendships. Through SLO, students acquire and refine skills that give them an edge in college and throughout life and assist them in becoming active, conscientious, and community-minded members.

This academic year, and for the first time ever, the SLO job fair was held online. Deputy Head Prefects of all nine departments organized live sessions to better explain to students about their departments and shared their plans for this academic year.

Online Study Groups

This term, the Academic Department of the SABIS® Student Life Organization scheduled online study sessions for the students on weekends and on week days after school hours. These online study sessions were designed to help students excel academically and proved to be a good aid for students that had academic gaps to fill.

Tutors from the academic department were giving from their own personal time to support their friends and further prove that the department will always be there for them and that the learning should never stop.

Staying Safe Online

Living in the 21st century means living in an ever-expanding technology driven era. This is the century that has marked the beginning of the technological singularity.

With the online learning being part of our students’ daily life and as students are spending more time online, the Discipline Department of the SABIS® Student Life Organization took it upon themselves to run a valuable awareness campaign throughout the term.

The campaign included live online sessions that encouraged students to speak up in case they were facing cyber bullying and taught them how to deal with the situation. The department also ran awareness videos they created during SLO periods for students throughout all levels.
