Before there was SATERN, there was SAROF – the Salvationist Amateur

Operators Fellowship. Lt. Colonel Carl J. Lindstrom, W9JSF, was the

Founder and Coordinator of SAROF. As early as December 1959, ham

radio operators were joining together to aid others in service with SAROF.

Page 2: The Salvation Army · 2018-03-06 · The Salvation Army Before there was SATERN, there was SAROF – the Salvationist Amateur Operators Fellowship. Lt. Colonel Carl J. Lindstrom,

We then come to June 1988; SATERN is the

brainchild of Major Patrick McPherson, WW9E

Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) coordinator for

central Illinois

and Eastern Iowa in the Heartland Division.

SATERN’s first network consists of Pat; EDS

volunteer Arthur Evans and two Canadian

Salvationists. The possibility that the fledgling

network could accommodate international emergencies begins to dawn on its founders.

In June of 2011 Maj. Pat (SK) retired from his position in SATERN and The Salvation Army.

In his absence Maj. Rick Shirran, VE3NUZ assumed the position where he served until 2016.

Late in 2016 Bill Feist, WB8BZH was named as the National SATERN Liaison. Bill created

and submitted a new strategic plan for SATERN. The plan was approved in Dec. 2016 and a

national committee was formed to implement it. Satern.org

August 2017 - The strategic plan implementation committee meets for the first time in a

teleconference. Sub-committees were formed to address

major points in the strategic plan.

Warren Andreasen (K7CWA), Host Manager and Ken

Standard (AD5XJ), WebMaster, begin to revise the

SATERN.org website to fulfill one of the goals of the

Strategic Plan.

Satern.org began a relaunch in October 2017. Major

enhancements were undertaken and a new style was

introduced. The WebMaster and Host manager also

updated and consolidated much of the hosting

equipment and software.

In the National Leadership Council meetings, a plan was created to launch a celebration of

SATERN 30th

anniversary. Satern.org

SATERN is an all-volunteer organization made up of currently licensed amateur radio

operators. We volunteer time and efforts toward aiding The Salvation Army Emergency

Disaster Services ministry. Many of us are also volunteers in such all-volunteer organizations

as SKYWARN, ARES, and others. Some have completed the FEMA online training, or EDS

Incident Command training, SKYWARN training, or ARES Emergency Communications

training.

SATERN has local organizations in all 50 states and Canada, as well as many other parts of

the world. The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network has demonstrated its

effectiveness by providing essential radio communication services in countless disaster

situations

Our Vision

The future SATERN will bring together communications and technical expertise to aid the

Emergency Disaster Service EDS in order to further enhance the disaster response, increase

effectiveness and timeliness of the aid provided, and to better support EDS in the effort to “Do

The Most Good” as we serve those in need.

The purpose of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) is to acquire

and train personnel skilled in emergency communications and message handling, who will

support Salvation Army operations in local, regional and international disaster situations.

Jim, KØNK, was the featured speaker at the Johnson Country Radio Amateurs Club meeting on

Friday, February 23. Jim’s presentation was "A Practical Look at Batteries". During the program,

Jim provided information about the common battery technologies that are used in amateur radio. He

discussed such subtopics as the history of batteries, cost comparisons, life span of common battery

types, discharge rates, “C” ratings, battery voltages, battery construction, amp hour ratings, reserve

capacity, cold cranking amperage, cycle life, battery maintenance, battery chargers/tenders, etc. The

informative program was well received by the approximately 50 persons present.

Jim Andera, KØNK, is shown pointing during his PowerPoint presentation to the JCRAC members and

guests.

Page 5: The Salvation Army · 2018-03-06 · The Salvation Army Before there was SATERN, there was SAROF – the Salvationist Amateur Operators Fellowship. Lt. Colonel Carl J. Lindstrom,

The Santa Fe Trail Amateur Radio Club (SFTARC) has been conducting ham-radio classes at The Salvation

Army Olathe Corps throughout January and February 2018. SATERN member Jim Andera, KØNK, advised

they took advantage of the extra manpower that was available from the club on Saturdays to make some needed

improvements to the HF antenna system at the Olathe Corps. Jim reported those who helped included Greg

Wolf, KIØKK (SFTARC President); Larry Hall, KDØRIU (SFTARC Vice President); SATERN/SFTARC

member Joe Krout, KRØUT and Jim Andera, KØNK.

Jim reported:

The 40-meter section of the 40/75-meter trap dipole has been shortened to pull the resonance up from

6.9 MHz into the ham band. It still tends to favor the lower portion of 40 but should be usable across the

band. Jim noted they had to add capacity hats to the 75-meter section to get it to resonate in the middle

of the phone band. The lowest SWR is at about 3.86 MHz.

They turned the 40/75-meter trap dipole into a fan dipole by adding a set of 20-meter elements that

include a 10-meter pair of traps, giving the system 75, 40, 20 and 10-meter capability. The new elements

are configured as an “inverted-Vee,” so it should be more-or-less omnidirectional. On 20 meters the

SWR is good across the band; on 10 meters the SWR is best around 28.9 MHz and they were not

successful at getting it pulled any lower. The trap makes the 10-meter bandwidth narrow.

The tuner in the Icom IC-746 radio at the June Jeffers Memorial Radio Room does a real good job of

making the SWR look good to the radio, even where the antenna SWR is well above 3:1, according to

Jim.

One of the “sealed” 40-meter traps had water in it. They added a drain hole to drain it but that may

require some more attention. The 40-meter traps may need to be replaced before too long or maybe the

entire antenna may need to be replaced as it is all showing signs of old age.

With the antenna wire being so close to the metal building and in a non-symmetrical fashion, getting it

properly tuned was “a bit of a headache,” according to Jim. However, he reported what they have

should be useable for now.

We appreciate the efforts of Greg, Larry, Joe and Jim (all representing the Santa Fe Amateur Radio

Club) in making the antenna system at the Olathe Corps workable on additional bands and more

efficient.
