Presidents Report Welcome to another addition of the Rottweiler Review, I hope everyone is keeping warm and trying to get out and about with your furry ones as much as possible. Over the last couple of months our committee has seen the resignation of 2 of its committee members, which has been a big loss to our small hard working dedicated team. Firstly Jeannette Attwell RCSA secretary left us and moved to sunny Queensland for a fresh new start with her partner and just very recently Nola Hender – Critique, BBQ and all round Extraordinaire has left us for the French delacies in France with her job. I would like to thank both Jeannette and Nola for their hard work and dedication to our committee and our club over the years. We will miss you very much! With them leaving it has left our committee running very short and in the mean time we will be filling the roles as best we can. However these positions are vacant and we are looking for anyone who might like to fill these roles either for the remainder of the year or will nominate to take over in the 2018 year at the upcoming AGM in November. In June we held our 50th Championship Show, Breed Survey and Obedience/Rally Trial which again was an all-round success. The weather although a little drizzly on the Friday was very kind to us and from all accounts everyone was happy with the show. (Steve’s report is included in this Review edition). We also held 2 seminars one each on the Friday and Saturday nights which were well attended and hopefully those that did attend were able to learn and take something away from them. I know Steve was very pleased with the attendance and grateful to the club for putting them on. The RCSA has decided not to hold the October show due to a number of reasons, reduced committee, close proximity of the RCV National and other state shows around that time etc etc, however we hope to re-visit holding October shows after our AGM. The RCSA AGM will be held on Tuesday 28th November, and AGM notices will be out by the 30th October, however anyone wishing to put forward changes in any of the club documents, Constitution, Rules/Reg or Trophy rules must do so by the 29th September. A separate notice regarding this was sent to the members 23rd August. By now all club members should know and be very aware of the rules around JLPP and making sure all their breeding stock is being tested either now or before mating. If not you will be in breach of the NRCA rules which came in to effect on the 1st July 2017. If you have had your dogs tested, please ensure you send a copy of your test results and dogs pedigree to the NRCA breed recorder by either email at [email protected] or via post to NRCA Breed Recorder PO Box 1102 Grovedale DC 3216 Victoria. All of these results will be loaded on to the NRCA HD/ED Database.
Not much else to report, so that’s all from me for now. Stay warm and stay well. Kind Regards Narelle Medlicott President

Rottweiler dogs can be so darn funny!
When we first brought our male Rottweiler Chevy home, he needed a bath. I worried it was going to be a struggle,
but instead he jumped right in the tub. So it seemed he liked water. . .
A few weeks later, my neighbor invited us over to play in her dog Lucy's brand new pool. It was a real pool, the kind
with a vinyl bottom and metal sides, etc.
We went into the back yard, Chevy saw the pool and went completely berserk. He jumped right in and started
splashing. He then went crazy with both front arms splashing as hard as he could. . .
Needless to say, the bottom was instantly shredded, the pool sides went crashing and completely flooded my
neighbors yard :( Oooops!
My neighbor laughed herself silly, but I felt so bad that the next day Chevy and I went to Costco and bought 2 of the
hard plastic shell pools (1 for Chevy, and 1 for Lucy). He actually punctured that pool right away, so I have to buy him
a new pool every summer - good thing they're cheap :0)
Rottweiler dogs can be super tough
This story is a little scary, and please keep in mind that Chevy is a Rottweiler Rescue and he came to us with some
pretty serious issues - most of which we've worked through over the years.
We used to have a couch in front of our living room picture window, and Chevy didn't like anyone walking past our
house. He used to jump up on the couch, put his paws on the window sill and smash his face sideways against the
glass.
One day we went somewhere, and when we returned my husband hollered as I was unlocking the door "is the dog
alright?" I asked why, because I hadn't even seen it. . .
Unfortunately, we had joked that someday he was going to break the glass. . . .Well, the whole center pane was
busted out with a long pointy shard hanging down right in the middle.
I ran in the house and found Chevy hiding on the other side of the bed with a look on his face that said "I know I'm
seriously in trouble, I was a bad dog." He appeared to be perfectly fine.
Thank God he didn't go all the way through the window, and how he didn't get one single cut on him I will never
know. The thing that I wonder most about though. . .
Is if the person who happened to be walking past the house at the time had to go home and change their drawers :0(
Chevy can no longer access the front window as we have a big table and two chairs there now, although we really
don't have this problem anymore - sometimes there's more reasons to redecorate than just changing colors :0)
Rottweiler dogs are smarter than a 5th grader
One summer morning my husband and I decided to leave Savannah outside in the backyard while we were at work.
When we got home I noticed her looking at us through the front window of the house. I said to my hubby "didn't we
leave her outside this morning?" Hmmmm
We certainly had left her outside, but apparently she decided that she would rather be in the house. She had opened
the sliding glass door, let herself in the house - and let my "inside only" cat out (that's a whole 'nother story itself) :0(
That's the day we realized our Rottweiler was probably smarter than us :0)

Judging the Rottweiler Club of South Australia’s
50th Championship Show and Breed Survey
June 17-19, 2017
On June 13, 2017, I judged the Rottweiler Club of South Australia’s 50th Club show. It was my
third judging assignment in Australia - the two previous ones were for the Northern Districts
Rottweiler Club in 2007 and 2012.
Living in New York and traveling to Australia in June is a big adjustment, the night is the day,
hot is cool and two days are lost from flying. Fortunately, I can make the change quickly.
I would like to thank the club and members, Narelle Medlicott pres. Dannielle Bermingham,
Marco Grimaldi, Debra Grimaldi, Brigetta Palmer, Jeannette Attwell, my ring stewards, Kerry
Osborne, Tania Mitchell and Marie Lowden. A big thank you to Josie Eiffe for her graciousness
and making my stay so pleasurable. I greatly enjoyed her company and our discussions on the
international Rottweiler.
The show - covering three days of conformation - June 17-19 - had 95 entries and a breed
survey with three entries on Monday, June 19. I also conducted two seminars. It was a full
plate.
Adjudication Conformation judging started with puppies on Friday, youth on Saturday culminating in the
balance of entries on Sunday. All dogs were handled and presented expertly.
Walking is a basic mode of Rottweiler
locomotion. It can reveal many things. All
classes were asked to walk first, then
checked for disqualifying faults and
dentition. I also include an assessment of
the “up and back.” It measures the
correct and incorrect mechanics of the
front and rear assemblies.
It is a critical evaluation, and necessary
for a thorough judgment of gait.
Largely, head type was correct on exhibits with
good zygomatic arch and stop, and ear set too.
Everyone dog I judged possessed excellent eye
color - ranging from dark to medium dark – and had
the proper almond shape, tight fitting eyelids. There
was not a single entry with light eyes. I congratulate
their breeders. Most had dark lip and gum
pigmentation.

Regarding the bite and teeth
alignment, dentition for many
exhibits was correct. Most
entries had appropriate bone
substance, and their gait was
harmonious with good reach
and drive.
There were some noteworthy
irregularities. Many heads
needed more pronunciation of
the zygomatic arch, the stop
and a few had only sufficient
gum and lip pigmentation. About dentition, several dogs had square P3’s - left and right upper
jaw – one exhibit had a misaligned i3 upper right, and one had a spacing problem with the P3
lower left. Too many dogs and bitches
had only sufficient front and rear
angulation, which explains their shallow
reach and drive. Most conspicuous was
the body length on nearly all exhibits. It
was long - out of the standard - and not
correct.
Seminars and Breed Survey I presented two seminars. After the show on Friday evening, I conducted the first one, The
Rottweiler In Type. It had 16 attendees and produced several lively discussions. My second
seminar after judging Saturday was The Correct Geometry of Rottweiler Dog and Bitch Head
Type with Discussions on Its Evolution. It had 12 participants. The show concluded on Monday
with the club’s Breed Survey. There were three entered and all passed.
A Unique Perspective Judging Rottweilers in Australia – 2007 and 2012 - allows me a unique viewpoint. Exhibits in
the 2007 NDRC show were typical in head and body type, with good construction and gait. I
praised their breeders, owners, and handlers. But in 2012, when I returned to judge for the
same club, I noticed a troubling and undesirable trend in two areas, body length and
angulation of the front and rear. Head type was still good, but the body ratio of height to
length worsened - the average ratio on exhibits was closer to 9X12. Front and rear angulations
diminished from good to sufficient. It was disturbing. I alerted the club to the negative
trending change. Interestingly, in the Veteran class for this year’s SA show, 2017, I found proof
of my prediction.
A 9-year-old veteran entry in the male class possessed the correct front and rear angulation
and body length. This dog was a quality example of the good type exhibits I judged in 2007.
The dogs back then were producing the standard accepted body length and angulations.
Now, body length - closer to 9X13 - and angulations are incorrect. What once was is now a
rarity. The veteran entry confirmed the change I predicted in 2012.

Summary The SA club is well organized, professional and conducts an impactful show. I praise the
breeders, owners, and handlers of all the class winners. Congratulations go to Starkehre
Neverending Story - Best in Show - and NRCA Ch. Aus.Ch. Zlatnik Heidi ET RN Runner Up Best
in Show. I hope my critique of the exhibits will be studied constructively and enhance
someone’s breeding program. I look ahead to adjudicate another show.
Sincerely,
Steve Wolfson
