Anthony MowerENGL 1102-040Professor BrownThe Psychological Effects Through PowerReflective EssayHuman beings are in constant pursuit to have power over others, situations, and even themselves. A strong way to examine how power can truly be prevalent within todays society would be to look at various graphics. From my own personal stand point I perceive images to be more explanatory than a collection of words. While words can help to provide specificity, it can cause it to be closed to other instances, further decreasing its connections. With images individuals can apply their own meaning, based upon how they observe the world. For my project I chose to focus upon the psychological feelings that power can bring on. Overall, I believe this choice to be the best for me to in order to make connections with the images I had examined. This aspect makes sense in knowing that I am a psychology major, and the fact that I want to become a Psychiatrist. So how I really grasp something is based on what find of actions and feelings are being displayed. Once I had put these pictures into this light I was able to come up with my ideas and perceptions on how to do this project with ease. The way I was able to grow was being exposed to all of these different aspects in which people/things were reacting to the environment around them. That people have different ways in which they are able to express themselves and their feelings to in turn convey/hide their message to/from the world. Reflective Essay Cont.When my audience looks at my presentation I want them to think about the feelings that overcome when looking at the different aspects of the image. That they should first look at the subject, to see what they are feeling in that moment, then look outwards to the environment and the people around them to see what is causing these feelings. Once they have grasped that aspect I want them to next see how they would feel in those circumstances, if the situation presented itself to them. Not to be confused with what actions that would do in reaction to these events, just primarily the initial feeling that they have. So from these two feelings the person(s) can make a comparison as to whether their feelings are different or the same to the subject of the image. The first image that comes to mind when as to how it made the most personal connection with me would have to be the graphic of the progression of Anakin Skywalker (photo #8), from Star Wars. To be honest I am a bit of a nerd, from growing up watching the original trilogy and the prequels, so I have always had great enjoyment in watching these movies. Also, I have been able to make connection with my own life through the character displayed in the graphic. This aspect would be him changing from good to evil, however I dont feel as if I have changed to become and evil person. I am just comparing the over change, that I used to have all of the perceptions and now I am different in various aspects.

Reflective Essay Cont.For the basis of my own learning process of this project, while it might seem comical, the Elephant having a fear of a mouse help to open my thought process. When I started to break this image down step by step, I came to the conclusion that this was a visual example of how phobias work. So from this idea the basis of my theme was born, which is the feeling of each picture. As I moved from image to image I was able to strengthen my analytical process of these feelings being displayed, all because of that initial realization. So from this project as a whole I have been able to strengthen various aspect of my life. The first is self reflection, and my ability to make connections with all of the characteristics that present themselves. This can help strengthen present and future connection to people and things in which I encounter on a day to day basis. Second, is being able to be more analytical with my thinking, and looking deeper into what the image is portraying. This will help me to further understand what is happening in situations and to really grasp the meaning of certain aspects. As a whole I have been able to strengthen my perceptions within the world to help my grow more as an individual.

Rhetoric Analysis #1: Photo #1Text- This is a graphic picture which comes from an independent blog. Reader- The intended audience would be those facing financial troubles, people who specialize in finances, and those concerned about the countries future. I would be apart of this audience because as a college student I will most likely be in debt. The common ground that the author and I have is the betterment of ones self through education. There really is no aspect to change, from this article, just the ability to agree with his opinions Author- The author or the graphic is unknown, but this segment is by John Rentoul. He mainly wrote this article to state his opinion about someone else's work. He teaches contemporary history at Queen Mary, University of London. (http://blogs.independent.co.uk/author/johnrentoul/)Constraints- He has no clear financial background, so his validity towards the subject is in question. The reader faces limitations as to whether or not they understand the financial world. These limitations are not really shown within the text because of the confidence in which the author has. Exigence- Debt has been an ongoing argument and can be illustrated by the graphic. The main cause of the argument is initial opinion of the individual who stated that debt above 90% does cause a stunt in growth. He is basically just putting in his own opinion to the matter. I was no apart of this original audience because I had no idea that this event had occurred. However my beliefs about human well being greatly influenced my perception to bring worry at the sight of this article.Agenda- The gruesomeness of the picture has some biases, but is justified in the fact that the author does not wan to show something to horrific because of the fear it might place on the audience. Rhetoric Analysis #2: Photo #5 (cont.)Demands- This piece urges remorse and remembrance for those who have died because of this tragedy. The are no real clear repercussions/benefits of this of following through with this action.Inquiries- I basically want to know is how the people have recovered at this point. There is no clear manipulation from this photo, I believe that it is just trying to capture the truth of the event based upon its vividness. Gains- From this piece I was able to gain the sense as to the damaging effects of a typhoon and the sense to feel remorseful for people that I do not know.Motivators- The motivation of this picture would be to document the extent in which the disaster affected the area. My motivation for finding this picture would be finding a picture that opens the eyes of my audience.

It main point is to show the progression of evil in an individual. Agent- There is nothing on the author of the picture. However, the author of this blog post is Jose Guzman and there is very little information given on him.Receiver- This image primarily grabs people who are interested in Star Wars and Science Fiction films. I am a part of this audience, and my feelings towards the character influence my perception of this picture.Agenda- The picture brings a dark image to the characters personality.
