Feast of the Presentation of the Lord From a sermon by St. Sophronius, bishop †638

In honor of the divine mystery that we celebrate today, let us all hasten to meet Christ. Everyone should be eager to join the process and to carry a light.

Our lighted candles are a sign of the divine splendor of the one who comes to expel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe radiant with the brilliance of His eternal light. Our candles also show how bright our souls should be when we go to meet Christ.

The Mother of God, the most pure Virgin, carried the true light in her arms and brought Him to those who lay in darkness. We too should carry a light for all to see and reflect the radiance of the true light as we hasten to meet Him.

The Light has come and has shone upon a world enveloped in the shadows; the Dayspring from on high has visited us and given light to those who lived in darkness. This, then, is our feast, and we join in procession with lighted candles to reveal the light that has shone upon us and the glory that is yet to come to us through Him, So let us hasten all together to meet our God.

The true light has come, the light that enlightens every man who is born into the world. Let all of us, my brethren, be enlightened and made radiant by this light. Let all of us share in its splendor, and be so filled with it that no one remains in the darkness. Let us be shining ourselves as we go together to meet and to receive with the aged Simeon the light whose brilliance is eternal. Rejoicing with Simeon, let us sing a hymn of thanksgiving to God, the Father of the light, who sent the true light to dispel the darkness and to give us all a share in His splendor.

Through Simeon’s eyes we too have seen the salvation of God which He prepared for all the nations and revealed as the glory of the new Israel, which is ourselves. As Simeon was released from the bonds of this life when he had seen Christ, so we too were at once freed from our old state of sinfulness.

By faith we too embraced Christ, the salvation of God the Father, as He came to us from Bethlehem. Gentiles before, we have now become the people of God. Our eyes have seen God incarnate, and because we have seen Him present among us and have mentally received Him into our arms, we are called the new Israel. Never shall we forget this presence; every year we keep a feast in its honor.

Go, and let your light shine!

Saint Faustina heard these words from Jesus:

“You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first – by deed, the second – by word, the third – by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. By this means a soul glorifies and pays reverence to my mercy.” (Diary 742)

From the desk of your Pastoral Associate – Week of January 26th

Religious Education - There are classes today after Mass. Thank you so much, parents, who came to class with your child(ren) last Sunday. I was pleased by the turn out! Next month on the 4th Sunday, February 23rd, we will be having an ALL FAMILIES Lenten prep event. I hope, parents, you will again make it a priority to be there. We are shooting for 100% participation by our families. I think we can make this the best Lent EVER!

Youth Group – Get ready for Valentine’s Day by buying some sweet treats from our youth group members after Sunday Mass on February 9th. They will be baking up a storm to raise money for a youth group outing. All baked goods are on sale for a donation of your choice.

Hospitality Team Meeting – Normally we meet on the first Monday of each month but February’s meeting has been moved to 4:00 PM on February 10th. One topic of discussion this month will be what new project can this team promote which would involve many people in the parish. Please bring all your great ideas to this meeting!!

RCIA - I am so excited to tell you we have another inquirer joining us this weekend and her fiancée who is already Catholic will be coming too! That brings our group to SEVEN!!!! Please, please, please pray for these seven folks and for Anita and myself as we share our beautiful Catholic faith with them. It is still not too late for someone to join, so,if you know of any fence-sitter, talk to them. Our sessions are at 6:30 PM every Saturday evening. Kids Food Pak – A big shout out and thank you to Dale and Cathy Burnett for watching over this program; however, they have passed the baton on to another volunteer. Her name is Kandy Elliott and she will be coming every other week to pick up our donations. Cathy told me they are still serving over 100 students in grades kindergarten through high school in our school district so we need to keep supporting this outreach. Thank you to all who so generously give to the youth of our community.

American Heritage Girls – This group held their first ever Awards Ceremony in our hall last Sunday. Girls were presented with badges they have earned through the Fall and early Winter months. Two badges all the girls worked on were “Fire Safety and Fire Building” and “Kitchen Scientist”. Some girls earned badges they chose on their own like “Sign Language” and “Living in the USA”. Several girls also were presented with service stars for the volunteer service hours they have performed for their school, their church or their community. Troop # 0312 is chartered by our Knights of Columbus but is open to any girl in Sweet Home five years old through senior in high school. They are excited to be adding one new leader and three new girls to the troop beginning in February. – Nancy Ellis

March for Life – Salem State Capital

Saturday, January 25, 2020

One of the foundation tenets of the Knights of Columbus is our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Knights are asked to carry a rosary at all times. As part of that devotion to Mary, parishes across the country are hosting icons of the Blessed Virgin, titled “Our Lady of Help of Persecuted Christians.” It was created by Italian artist Fabrizio Diomedi. There are only three in Oregon. Often called a “window to heaven,” the religious icon is a piece of artwork used in prayer. In the early Church, when many could not read, icons were a visual way to share the truth about God. St. Helen’s Knights of Columbus Council 8624 will host icon from Feb. 10 to 17. Plans are being made to pray the Rosary several nights that week and to honor the Blessed Virgin through the icon at Mass. Look for a schedule of events in next week’s bulletin.

If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail, pledge envelopes will be available during Mass.

Parish Goals for 2020 Saint Helen Holy Trinity $10,006.27 $2,274.46

Gospel mission here in Western Oregon.

Our Mission Statement

We the parishioners of Saint Helen and Holy Trinity feel we are called by God to live our Faith through the example of Jesus Christ. We seek to create a loving atmosphere in which to praise God. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will continue to develop active ministries to achieve peace and justice through love of neighbor.

Would the parishioner who borrowed the book, “The 5000 Year Leap” by W. Cleon Sklousen

please, return it to Fr. Fred? Thank you.

To the parishioner who bought the Air Fryer: there is a recipe/instruction booklet that goes with it. Please contact the office so that we can arrange for you to pick it up.

My Uncle Fulton Sheen is written by Joan Sheen Cunningham and Janet Rodriguez. It recounts her relationship with her Uncle and how he helped and influenced her life. He was like a second father to her. The book, from Ignatius Press is on sale at this time for the cost of $13.56 plus shipping and handling.

I am willing to put in an order and to order a book for you. Cost to you would be $15.00. YOU MUST LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, FEB. 6 AT NOON. I will put in the order at that time. Looks like it might be a

good Lenten read. Janey+
