Greetings Guild Members—

On Saturday afternoon, July 25th, I participated in our Quiltapalooza, a new event organized by our guild Wonder Woman, Marjorie McConnell. I was just settling in with the other ladies to work on my first quilt of the afternoon when I noticed some serious smoke in the sky outside the Sugar Pine classroom. Concern set in, so I checked Yubanet on my I-Phone to see where the smoke might be coming from. In the section for "smaller local fires happening now", You Bet Road was listed as a location. Well, since that was not far from my house, panic replaced concern. My mind began to race. Which way was the wind blowing? How big was the fire? Darn, I was not prepared to evacuate—how and where would I begin?

The room was now buzzing with talk about a fire somewhere nearby. Someone (WW) said to me, "Kate, that could be your (fire victim) quilt." Suddenly the quilt I was working on took on new meaning. The quilt was

instantly more valuable—prettier, softer, more comforting—and I could feel how it might be treasured by a person who had lost their belongings.

These thoughts and feelings put me over the top, so I packed up my things (including "my" unfinished quilt) and drove straight home to find my husband, see if the house was okay, and assess the actual fire threat.

We all know the good news. Even though the Lowell fire has scorched 2300 acres (as of this writing), no homes or lives were lost. But it could happen anywhere at any time. As a result of this experience I learned lots of things, but the two most important were: 1. I need to be prepared to evacuate and have started the process (see www.ready.gov/prepare); and 2. Our Community Service provides a heartfelt valuable service to the residents of our area.

A big Thank You to Marjorie as our Community Service leader and to the members of the Guild who work on these quilts to make this goal of the Guild a reality. Kate Grant, President

Party On! Guild member Sophia Day has stepped up to coordinate our Holiday Party.

Now, our December meeting will be way more fun than just a business meeting. Thank you, Sophia!

Guild Challenge      Forest Fantasy is both our guild challenge and our Quilt Show Theme.  We will have our regular challenge

reveal and voting at our March Meeting.  They will then be hung together at the quilt show in a special theme display.  I have the usual requirements:

whatever size and shape you want; three layers- top, batting and backing.   That's it!   Forest Fantasy is whatever your fantasy may be:  trees, water, mountains, animals, fairies, etc…

It does not have to be a landscape.  You can create it with fabrics, shapes and patterns.    We are a very creative guild and I can hardly wait to see all your beautiful quilts in March.   Any questions,

please feel free to call me.  My number is in the roster.          Lois Hodges Guild Challenge Chair

What Are You Waiting For? For several months, I’ve been asking for someone to step forward to be Hospitality Chair for next year. Even though this job might sound like an extra nicety, it is VERY IMPORTANT to the Guild.

We want and need new members in our Guild. They are important to continuing the vibrancy of our organization. The first impression potential new members receive often determines whether or not they will join. Remember how you felt when you first came to the Guild? Were you welcomed by a friendly person? If you weren’t, how did you feel? Our Hospitality Chair (and Committee) can make a good first impression and thus have a big impact on the life of our Guild.

This position is perfect for an outgoing person (or someone who wants to be more outgoing) who could gather a few friends to help her. A mini-group would also be a convenient and fun way to handle this position. It does not require much time outside the meetings nor does it require years of experience in the Guild, just a desire to help out. You would contribute a small amount of time and effort for potentially big results (happy new members).

Contact me to volunteer for this position. Phone: 530-263-3575 or Email: [email protected]

PROMOTING OUR GUILD

This year while I was white gloving at our Nevada County Fair, I happened to talk to several ladies who were admiring the quilts. During our conversation I asked if they were guild members, and to my astonishment I heard a similar theme. “I’m not a good enough quilter to belong” or “I just do quilts for Linus”. At this response I let them know that “a love for quilting” was all they needed to join our wonderful guild where they could meet others on their quilting journeys. I stressed that the guild is where you can be inspired, take classes, find help from other quilters and make new friends. Hopefully these ladies will take me up on my invitation to come check us out on September 1st. So bring your smile and keep an eye open for a new face with a deer-in-the-headlights look! Hopefully we can all help to build the guild one invitation at a time.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

QUILTAPALOOZA was a roaring success! The fire, birthdays, and other personal situations did not dampen guild member participation. Fifty (50) quilts were ready and waiting for eager quilters. For 11 hours - 10:30 - 9:00, guild members came and left, quilting like crazy. A few hardy souls stayed with me the entire day! By the end of the day most of the quilts were quilted, a few people took quilts home to finish up. Prizes were given out every hour, pizza and lots of snacks kept quilters fortified, and we enjoyed catching up on individual member news. I thank each and every member who participated and

appreciate those that stayed with me for the entire day. Stay tuned . . . It is quite possible that we will have another event in January or February.

Community Service resumes the third Thursday in September. We received some nice donations and Kathy is busy making up new quilt and pillowcase kits -- she just cannot pass up an opportunity to play with fabric!  Kits may be picked up at the September Guild meeting and you may also return those that you have worked on during the summer.

CS sent a quilt to the injured fire fighter - Matt Aoki, who was severely burned in the Lowell fire, keeping Nevada County safe. If you would like to thank him cards can be sent to: Matt Aoki, c/o Los Padres Hot Shots, 3505 Paradise Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93105.

Remember, Ina Gibson is doing a return engagement with her envelope quilt class. We look forward to seeing you there!

17 September – Ina Gibson’s “Envelope Quilting”, an easy, breezy way to complete a quilt. Practice on a CS quilt and gain ideas to use on your own quilt. Quilt sandwich provided.

19 November – Lorna Straka: Easy Binding. Quilt sandwiches provided.

2015 Community Service Dates September 17 October 15 November 19 December Distribution on Wednesday, Dec 2nd REMEMBER, there is NO CS in December

CS and DIQ meet at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit to you to work on at home – call or email me.

October Program: Marcia Harmening October 6th

Hi. My name is Marcia Harmening and I am the owner and designer for Happy Stash Quilts.I fell in love with quilting 15 years ago as a means of staving off insanity during the long, dark Alaska winters. I found that colorful fabric combined with colorful friendships is, indeed, the perfect solution for surviving the snowy, monochromatic season. I enjoy teaching on a regular basis and editing quilt books

for Brenda Henning of Bear Paw Productions. I began publishing my own patterns in 2008. In 2010, after 23 years in Alaska, my husband and I and our three children relocated to Reno, Nevada, where we are soaking in an unbelievable abundance of sunshine.

Lecture is: A Quilter's Journey Oct 6th 6:30pm GrassValley Charter SchoolWorkshop is: Oct 7th Autumn Cross, make it in luscious fall colors.

Pattern is included in class.  Tuscan Vineyard is an alternate BUT the applique portion will NOT be taught in the workshop.

Quilt Show 2016

Things are moving right along, the "team" is almost in place. One of the changes this year is that there are only THREE (3) meetings, and these are during the day. First meeting is Wednesday, September 3, 2:00 - ~4:00, SDA.

All chair positions are now filled EXCEPT for BASKET COMMITTEE. This is my final plea for a chair . . . the basket raffle nets the guild ~$3,000, funds that help cover overall operating expenses.. if I do not have a chair by the first Quilt Show meeting (there are only three), Wednesday, 02 September (the day after the guild meeting), the Quilt Show Committee will proceed without this event.  if you are interested, have questions, please contact me, 265-9787 or [email protected]. Please help make this team complete.

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

Opportunity Quilt -

The quilt was well received by the Fair goers.  So much so that I think we are going to have to order more

tickets for the up and coming Draft Horse Classic and Christmas Fair.  I want to thank the ladies who

answered the call to be white glovers.  You did a great job!!

At the Draft Horse Classic which is on Sept. 22 to 25th  I need a few more workers on Sat. and Sunday.  Please call to schedule a time.  Next is the Country Christmas

Faire on Thanksgiving weekend.  Again I need workers.  The time slots are 2 hours and we can sit

down.  At both of these affairs we will have a second quilt depicting the event, which will be raffled off on that Sunday.  I do need someone who will donate a

Christmas quilt.Your tickets for the Opportunity Quilt will be ready for pick up at the Sept. general meeting.  Please stop by

the table to get them and bring your check. Thanks again for the ladies

who white gloved at the Fair.

Judy Hamilton Patchwork Star for September 2015 On one of winter's finest spring-like days, over the river and through the woods to Nanna's Way I went. As a hopping big-eared bunny darted to the side of the road, I landed at Judy's restful 4-acre retreat. Stating emphatically, “I really don't like the deer!” Judy maintains her and husband Reed's healthy lifestyle by growing plenty of herbs, veggies and fruits—behind a modest fence. But, with a slight hint of contempt, she added: “The raccoons ate all my persimmons!” Reed, a semi-retired farming entrepreneur, enjoys growing wheat, corn and polenta in Wheatland, filling a popular homegrown niche for organic produce. With an advanced degree in nursing, Judy works as a nurse practitioner at a clinic 3 days a week in Yuba City.

Pretty much a newbie to quilting, Judy has been pursuing her craft just 5-6 years. Her favorite genre is traditional fare celebrating a trifecta of outdoor hues: apple greens, Hawaiian turquoises and cerulean blues. Since her favorite color is purple, I found an occasional painterly splurge of amethyst added to the mix. Chris Cook, veteran appliquer, is teaching Judy the rudiments of hand applique. Assorted springy florals graced her large design wall. Ironable mylar shapes defined multiple petals, leaves and stems. Mary Ellen's Best Press starch helps retain their shape when ironed over the plastic. Roxanne's Glue Baste-It holds motifs in place for hand work. The forecast here is for Judy's first successful hand applique, disciplined and unhurried. With a radiant grin, Judy promised: “This is my goal for this year!”

Another goal is to successfully machine quilt larger quilts. Many table runners and baby quilts have been beautifully executed on her Janome 6600 Memory Craft. It's neck is wide and her table is spacious. Showing a crisp hued turquoise-ish quilt that will be her first large project, she stated: “By doing it myself, I will avoid added cost.” Judy takes classes to improve her skills. Cathy Stone has instructed her on machine quilting and Sally Monestier is her embroidery mentor. One of Judy's favorite methods is paper-piecing. She says: “Just use Carol Doak's soft paper and make sure your stitches are extra small. It helps perforate the paper, making it easier to remove.”

Using a sturdy set of brakes, Judy is not seduced by an uncontrollable lure of stash building. Less is more they say. Her disciplined acquisitions include two modest stacks of assorted botanicals: Amy Butlers, Kaffe Fassets and Martha Negleys. There's a bouquet there enough to feast on. “I like to complete a project one at a time.” Judy is goal-oriented and has three burgeoning ideas for 2015: 1) to enjoy free motion quilting, 2) to learn hand applique, and 3) to continue to enjoy her best

buddies in the Sew Happy mini group.

Keep a close watch on this gal—she's on the move, full of bounce and full of energy. Quilting, with an emphasis in skill-building, has got her hooked!
