Guild Meeting Dates April 2016

President’s MessageHopefully you are adjusting well to daylight savings time. I love the longer days and just wish I could sleep in

another hour … I know there is talk of eliminating changing times twice a year. I don’t know what will be the outcome of that discussion, but it seems to come up every year.

Vice President, Susie Hardy, had us all moving around at the March Mixer. I heard all very good comments about the fitness exercises, and it was nice to have Dr. Antouri and his staff there to ask questions and get a quick check for any problems. Awesome time was had by all 😊

As you are aware the Quilt Show is coming up very soon. Quilt show entry forms must be submitted by 2:00 p.m. on March 17th. The reason for this is Sue Miller and Ardy Tobin need to know how many quilts and their sizes to make efficient use of the available space by designing the layout. Please consider entering a quilt whether for judging or show only. Volunteers are still needed to work at the quilt show. There will be sign ups at the April general meeting. Your volunteer form gets you into the quilt show on the day you work, so please sign up to volunteer on both days !!

Donna Greenwald is the speaker at the general meeting in April. Then she will have our first-ever 3-day workshop on thread painting. Her work is gorgeous and the workshop promises to be fun!

Keep quilting!

HOME WORKSHOP – DROP IN AND QUILT Come and join fellow Guild members for a relaxed day of sewing and camaraderie. Drop in and Quilt is a “work on your own project” which can be whatever you like. There is plenty of room and good light, it’s a great opportunity to ask others for advise if you’ve hit a challenge in your project, or work on your project or a Community Service quilt. We will have a few CS kits available. WHAT: A fun day making your choice(s) of NAME TAG or CHATELAINE (SO nice!). Ina Gibson and Diane Klose are bringing a lot of name badge ideas and we will have plenty of fabrics and other supplies for everyone’s use. Ina has chatelaine instructions and plenty of name badge examples and instructions. Diane has started a project to make name tags with the pine tree design to give to new members and you can make one of those to help her. WHEN: March 24. Doors open at 9:00 AM, class starts at 9:30, we leave by 3:00. Bring a bag lunch. WHERE: LDS Church, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City. Exit east from Hwy. 49 at Gold Flat, first left is Hollow Way. LDS is just past Hooper & Weaver, park on the side of the church and enter at door about halfway down the building. COST: FREE to all Guild members as a membership benefit. BRING: If you have a specific fabric you would like for your chatelaine bring a 2 ½” wide strip cut full width of fabric, about 40” long and any small scraps of coordinating fabrics for the crazy patch portion. Other supplies: small cutting mat, rotary cutter, normal sewing notions, thread and machine. Irons and ironing boards are provided. Save the date – next Home Workshop/Drop in and Quilt is May 26. No Home Workshop in April – we’ll be at Fairgrounds setting up for Quilt Show.

To sign up for Home Workshops or if you have any questions, please contact Anne Wilson at [email protected] or 274-1290.

QUILT SHOW 2016 NEWS AND NEEDS

QUILT SHOW 2016 Quilt Show Committee Chairs have been at work to bring you a quilt show with new energy – several special exhibits, new vendors, demonstrations, tuffets, scissor sharpening, and the debut of QUILTERS CAFÉ. The new caterer is offering some fabulous selections and will take credit/debit cards! If you participated in making a tuffet – large or small – please enter it in the Quilt Show.

There are a few changes. One to take note of is that members entering a quilt will not receive a free pass to the show. Why? Most members also work a shift, or more, and receive free entry into the show.

QUILT SHOW 2016 NEWS AND NEEDS (continued)

Quilt Show Sign Up: This is YOUR SHOW and most volunteer spaces have been filled but a few more are still needed. Please Sign-Up now or at the April meeting for one or more Committees – Baskets, Community Service, Country Store, Gate, Equipment, Hall of Honor, Information Booth, Judging, Lunchroom, Quilt Entries, Set Up / Take Down, Silent Auction, White Glove and there are a few more. Shifts are generally two hours. Many hands make light work.

COUNTRY STORE – Kathy Biggi and Molly Cook Country Store continues to seek guild vendors AND volunteers for Sunday. Please look through your stash for those things you do not want or need anymore.  If you are not interested in being a vendor, items can be donated to Community Service, contact Marjorie for more details.

The Quilt Show Committee implemented changes this year to improve the Country Store and to facilitate clean-up after the show: all vendors must work a shift; all items (including boxes) must be picked up before 5:00 pm on Sunday or a $25 disposal fee will be deducted from your earnings.

OPPORTUNITY QUILT SALES – Diane Klose This is a perfect opportunity for someone to sit and relax while selling tickets!  There are only a few openings left . . .

QUILTERS CAFÉ – Mary Serpa Now taking sign-ups for working in Quilters Café and dessert donations.

PUBLICITY – Lois Hodges Do you have a business you would like to advertise? Guild members receive a discounted rate in the brochure.

SILENT AUCTION – Diane Klose Silent Auction is now accepting donations and Quilt Show sign-ups! Bags, table runners, small quilts, wall hangings, or ?. Last year changes made to the bidding process were quite successful: donors were asked to set a minimum bid to cover the cost of their materials, to set a "Buy it now" price for those who did not want to chance losing the item, and incremental increases between $2 and $5. Three items were sold at a much higher "Buy it now" price. These changes will be continued this year. Your participation by donating items would be appreciated by the guild. WHITE GLOVE – Myrna RaglinEasy, breezy visiting with attendees, talking about entries, and showing the quilts.

Pine Tree Quilt Guild Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for a $1000 scholarship for 2016. We are making this scholarship available to all Nevada County 2016 graduates or continuing education students who are pursuing studies in fiber and/or textile art. If you know of a qualifying student, please have them contact:

Joan Mosley, Scholarship Chair, 164 Ventana Sierra Drive, Grass Valley, CA 95945 530-277-1047

She will provide them with an application, if needed. All completed applications are due to Joan by April 1, 2016. The selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee within two weeks of the deadline and all will be notified of the results.

JAMBOREE IS RETURNING

Our Jamboree returns this year! What is Jamboree? It is the guild's way of saying “thank you” to our members who work so hard to make our guild great. Another bonus is that it is FREE.

Save Saturday, October 22, 2016 for a fun, creative day. We will have more information for you at the May meeting, but right now we all need to concentrate on the quilt show.

We will have lots of parking and no stairs to climb, plus four outstanding, talented, and well-known teachers with a diversity of classes. It will be hard for you to choose between working on a lighthearted appliqué Christmas wall hanging, creating a spectacular circle quilt, using an easier technique to paper piecing a lovely table runner or designing and assembling a unique wearable in one day!

For the May meeting you need to bring a check for $25 to secure your spot in a class. On the day of the jamboree you will receive your check back; if you don’t show up, we get to keep your check. We want to be fair to everyone and make sure everyone gets into the class of your choice.

More to come!

Mystery Quilt 2015

Many of you who participated in the 2015 Mystery expressed a desire to do a Show&Tell together.  Fine by me!

Anyone who would like to show your 2015 Mystery Quilt as a group, please bring it to the April meeting.

Thank you!France's O’Brien, 273-1972

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Our new “digs”, Crafter’s Corner Room, at Eskaton Village are quite nice. Our work space is smaller and we are still settling in but it is a very nice fit. Please join us there on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.

COMING SOON ! ! ! FOSTER YOUTH will be graduating in May and we are seeking 12 teen-age quilts and pillowcases by May 10 for the 2016 graduates. A generous twin or a double size should keep them cozy as they go out on their own. If you would like to make a mesh tote, please let me know and I will have supplies ready. These were a great hit with the “kids” last year and it is a great “twofer” – we can pack the quilt/pillowcase and they have something to tote laundry or other items.

KATHY”S KITS – We have lots of kits – quilts and pillowcases – ready for you to put together. We also have Block Party pieces made from a variety of fun fabric left-overs that will make 10-inch or larger blocks. Simply sew precut pieces together into a block and turn them in to CS. As the finished blocks accumulate they will be assembled into tops for baby, lap, or twin size quilts. How easy is this?

2016 CS DATES – third TUESDAY at ESKATON, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.April 19 May 17 June 21 July 19 August 16 September 20 October 18 November 15 December – NO CS

Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me. If you know of someone who needs a quilt, please contact me with the details. Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

After retiring from the airline industry , I started my long-arm

quilting business when I moved to Penn Valley in 2007. In 2008 I joined

the Pine Tree Quilt Guild and have made many friends in the local

quilting community. I have an APQS machine with a computerized

system. I have thousands of designs and the ability to organize new designs specific to your quilt. I truly enjoy

choosing or helping my customers select the right design that will compliment their quilt. The best reward that I can

achieve is when my customers and friends recommend me to others.

If you are in need of quilting services, please give me a call at 432-9461 to set

up and appointment.
