“I support
empty
gestures!”
Those are the words on the yellow
ribbon bumper sticker on the car at
the left.
When I first saw the statement, I thought about the well-meaning mes-
sages on bumper stickers of well-meaning people and how those statements
often become exactly that—empty gestures. I thought to myself, “I would
never do that.” And then I remembered “I” have a yellow ribbon “Support
the troops” bumper sticker on my truck.
After ten years the yellow faded to white. You can hardly read the
words. But there it is on my truck to show my support for the troops in Iraq. I
never took it off the truck. I pray for the troops when I think about them, but
not with urgency as I felt when my son was in Iraq. I hate to admit it but the
bumper sticker revealed to me my support of empty gestures.
How many other empty
gestures mark my life?
Ouch!
Jesus criticized the empty
gestures of the Pharisees.
I’m not Jesus. I have no
room to criticize or point fin-
gers.
Nonetheless, let us make every effort to express our faith in humble
joyful service to others, so there is no difference between what we say we be-
lieve and what we do. In His love, Martin

CHOIR NOTES
This next Sunday, the Bell Choir will be
performing two pieces during the 10:30
service. "Abide With Me," the well-
known hymn, will be played during the
regular special music time. At the end
of the service. we will play the rousing
piece, "Fantasy for Hyfrodol." Hyfrodol
is the hymn tune used for the advent
hymn "Come, Thou Long-Expected Je-
sus."
A new praise song with be introduced
on Sunday -- "One Thing Remains" by
Kristian Standfill. It's been playing a lot
on Christian radio, so you may have
heard it. I think you'll enjoy it. It was
suggested by a few members of our con-
gregation.
See you Sunday! Paula
