“Seasons…” It’s hard to believe, as I sit in my office today on a

SWELTERING August morning, that Fall is just around the corner. The Spring and Summer we all longed for in those cold days of January and February are slipping away again, reminding us that September’s school and work schedule is upon us.

It’s good that God gives us these changes to refresh and renew us. It is also good that God gives us a new September every year. We gear up again from our relaxed mode and enter the joy of a new year of serving and learning. We’re soon going to be blessing the new school year in worship, watching busses return to the roads, and feeling the 90s of August return to the beautiful 60s and 70s of September and October. Just writing about the new things does something to my soul; it calms me, re-directs me, and reminds me that God’s seasons of life are just like God’s seasons of weather. Sometimes we are cozy and warm inside, other times we are out there in the world taking in all the fun of being outside, other times we are nursing the beauty of God’s creation, many times we are grumpy because life doesn’t give us enough time to see a new perspective or really pay attention to all that God gives us. Sometimes we are bursting with energy and vitality; other times we’d rather crawl back in bed and stay there for a while.

Welcome to God’s season of September. Come inside a little bit – return to the routine of Fall, and ponder how blessed

these warm spring and summer days have been. Find a new way to grow in faith as we wind down the outdoor, traveling times of our lives and stay home for a while to be God’s disciples together in this time of our lives.

Join your church family in growing together. Try something new. Turn your eyes toward the things God is calling you to begin or

renew in September.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NRSV)

Your partner in mission and ministry,

Pastor Pat

Bakers Needed… Golden Rule Love In the Name of Christ continues to serve Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties. This year alone 384 needs have been met by volunteers who have served 405 hours. Golden Rule Love INC is operated thru the giving of donations from individuals and churches. We are grateful for

every donation. Due to the turn in the economy, we have had to do additional fundraisers to meet

operating expenses. One of these fundraisers is a baked goods stand September 11th at the Milton

Harvest Festival. However, to make this happen, we need your help. We are asking for donations of homemade bread, pies, cakes, cookies, brownies or any other type of baked goods. Please call the Love INC office at 742-3561 (Monday – Thursday,

8:30-11:30 a.m.) by September 1st, and let us know what donations you are willing to make. The items will be sold on a take home basis, so please bring them in disposable containers. Donations may be dropped off Friday September 10, 5-7:30 p.m., at St. Andrew’s UMC, 102 Lower Market St., Milton, or Lewisburg Bible Church, 311 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg. You may also bring the donations directly to the stand on Saturday. Your help to make this fundraiser a success is extremely appreciated.

Opening Day at Christ Church – a Day Filled with Thoughts of Outreach – Sept. 12!!

We have so many things to celebrate on Sunday, September 12:

• First, we’ll kick off the new Sunday School year with an

intergenerational activity. We’ll hear again the story of the Gerasene man whom Jesus sent home to tell everyone what Jesus had done for him. We’ll have Beth Yenchko, our synod mission director, with us. We’ll be preparing cards

Page 12: THE PARISH VOICE - Christ Evangelical Lutheran Churchchristlutheranmpa.org/septnews10.pdfTHE PARISH VOICE Newsletter of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Milton, PA “God’s

12

that all of us will be able to use as invitations to worship with us and be a part of God’s work at Christ Church!

• In worship on the 12th, Beth will offer God’s Word for the day, and we’ll ponder more what it means to reach out and make disciples for Jesus. We’ll focus our worship on outreach, and “borrow” from Trinity a great new worship liturgy they have been using for the past couple of years. It will be our way, by request from some of our members, to introduce some more contemporary sounds in our worship life. We will also re-dedicate our newly-refurbished marble baptismal font and a beautiful, new bread linen that Ida Snyder has so graciously made for us. We’ll recognize first graders with a new study Bible, and celebrate with those in our congregation who are continuing their confirmation journey.

• And last but not least – we’re kicking off a new senior youth group that evening – 7 p.m. All youth in grades 8 and older are welcome to attend and offer your input for how youth group will work this year. And if you are an older adult who likes to connect with youth in ministry – come on out, too!

All these are such good things to celebrate – and a brand new year to be in ministry together. God has certainly – and abundantly – blessed us.

Bible Buddies begins Friday,

September 17

Come – all our younger youth! We’ll be studying the story of Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000 – and learning how important fish are to that special story. We’ll share a meal at 5:30 p.m.,

then enjoy activities related to the story until 7 p.m.

Page 13: THE PARISH VOICE - Christ Evangelical Lutheran Churchchristlutheranmpa.org/septnews10.pdfTHE PARISH VOICE Newsletter of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Milton, PA “God’s

13

If you wish, parents are always welcome to join their children for Bible Buddies – along with any other adults who might like hanging around with God’s younger saints!

Blessing of Pets – October 3

Sunday, October 3, at 4 p.m., bring your beloved animal friends to Pine Street Lutheran Church in Danville for a Godly blessing for their presence and ministry in your life. We’ll meet outdoors in the gazebo area, just below the Church (407 Pine Street, Danville).

Blanket Sunday – October 3

Plan now to give a special offering on that day to help people all over the world who cannot afford the luxury of a warm blanket. Just $5 will give a needy person this wonderful gift.

(W)holy, (W)holy, (W)holy: Health, Healing and

Wholeness Article for September 2010

“After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.” (1Kings 17:17, NRSV) If you have ever heard an infant suffering from whooping cough (pertussis), it can be an extremely frightening experience (check out http://www.babycenter.com/2_sounds-of-whooping-cough_10316927.bc)! Inflammation from this bacterial infection leads to a cough so sever that the child cannot catch his breath. Between coughs, he gasps for air, leading to the distinctive “whooping” sound of the illness. Whooping cough is not just a childhood disease, and the number of active cases here in the US is climbing – in California alone, the number of cases has quadrupled over that of last year - enough for it to be labeled an ‘epidemic”. Cases have also increased in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and South Carolina, and it is believe the numbers will further increase when children return to school.

Page 19: THE PARISH VOICE - Christ Evangelical Lutheran Churchchristlutheranmpa.org/septnews10.pdfTHE PARISH VOICE Newsletter of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Milton, PA “God’s

19

Why the sharp increase? It is not due to parents failing or refusing to immunize their children, nor is it due to an increase in immigration, as one might suspect. Instead, because immunity to the disease decreases over time, adolescents and adults are increasingly vulnerable to the bacteria as they age. They may even be unknowing carriers of the disease. In addition, re-emergence of the disease appears to be cyclical, occurring every 3 to 5 years. That is why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-dtap.pdf) recommends that children, adolescents, and adults receive regular immunization. This is especially important if they live with, or are caregivers of, infants under the age of three months.

Nurse’s Notes

First Aid for Tick Bites: 1. First, remove the tick as soon as possible. Carefully, using tweezers, grasp the tick near its mouth and pull gently to remove without crushing it. 2. Put the tick in a sealed jar. 3. Wash your hands, and the area with soap and water. 4. See the doctor if you aren’t able to remove all of it, or if you develop a rash, joint swelling or inflammation, fever, swollen lymph nodes, stiff neck, flu-like symptoms, or muscle aches. Take the saved tick with you. 5. Call 911 if you develop severe headache, have difficulty breathing, experience paralysis, have chest pain or difficulty breathing. Complications from tick bites can include chronic joint pain and inflammation, particularly in the knees, neurological symptoms, such as facial palsy, impaired memory, and heart irregularities. “Brew your cup of tea up to 5 minutes. The longer the steep time, the greater the quantity of health boosting flavonoids, explains Jeffrey Blumberg, PhD, professor of nutrition at Tufts University. Drink tea with a squeeze of lemon juice and you’ll increase antioxidant levels by up to 80%.” (Prevention, August 2010, pg. 37)
