The Great DisappointmentThe Great Disappointment was a major event in the history of the

Millerite movement , a 19th-century American Christian sect thatformed out of the Second Great Awakening . Based on hisinterpretations of the prophecies in the book of Daniel (Chapters8 and 9, especially Dan. 8:14 "Unto two thousand and threehundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed"),William Miller , a Baptist preacher, proposed that Jesus Christ would return to the earth during the year 1844. The morespecifi c date of October 22, 1844, was preached bySamuel S. Snow . Thousands of followers, some of whom hadgiven away all of their possessions, waited expectantly. WhenJesus did not appear, October 22, 1844, became known as theGreat Disappointment.

The Day of Atonement

Leviticus 16:33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make anatonement for the tabernacle of the congregation,

and for the altar, and he shall make an atonementfor the priests, and for all the people of thecongregation.

23:40 And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodlytrees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, andwillows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.

23:42 Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths:

23:43 That your generations may know that I made the childrenof Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the landof Egypt: I [am] the LORD your God.
