Green Ribbon Party 2011

Green colour is the colour of hope. Green ribbon is a small symbol of hope that students of the final year of their study get from their class- teachers on a very special event that is called “green ribbon party“. Is uses to be organised in autumn months, usually at the end of a calendar year, before Christmas.

There was the “green ribbon party“ of two classes IV.B and IV.C on 2nd December. It took place in the Social Hall in Šurany. Students, their teachers and parents spent a very nice evening together dancing, singing, talking and having good time. The evening was very special; girls were wearing evening long dresses and boys dark suits, shirts, ties and shoes.

Programme for the evening was divided into two parts: the first one was a school part ,where students were given green ribbons ,the head teacher of the school, students and class-teacher and one parent had their speeches and after them there was the second part, where students had

prepared their show

programme full of

dances, songs and

sketches. Then a dance

floor belonged to

everybody who wanted to dance. It was our evening full of stress at

nervousness at the beginning but later we spend wonderful time that we will never forget.

Green ribbon party is over and we have to go on in our study for the most important exams - school-leaving examinations which will be in May 2012. Every student wants to continue his study at university. Let us wish everybody good luck at examinations.

International Day of School Libraries

The book – a friend that teaches, entertains and helps people to relax. On 24th October 2011, there was organised an event called International Day of School Libraries in our school.

It has been for the second year that students could learn new information about new books; they could share their ideas about books with their schoolmates from the I.B and I.C classes. Some students have prepared nice projects about books, some of them only brought to show their favourite book and said some words about it. Students could also test their knowledge about literature, history, science. Organizers of the event decided to dedicate

it to students of the first classes for their better orientation in a school library. We can assess the event very positively because students have also shown their skills in German, Russian and English languages while speaking about their favourite books. We also announced a literary and art competition with themes My Ideal School Library and My Favourite Literary Hero.

We were pleasantly surprised by activities of our students and we hope that next year will be as successful as this year has been.

The Olympiad in Slovak Language and Literature

Congratulations and good luck in the regional round!

The English Olympiad

There was the annual school round of the English Olympiad which our school organised on 22nd November 2011. Many students tried their luck, including three students from our class.

The Olympiad was divided into 2 parts: the first part was reading comprehension, a grammar and vocabulary test. The tests were quite difficult this year, and many students did not know the correct answer to some of the questions. The best 3 from each category advanced to the next part of the Olympiad. The second part was about talking. We got a picture of

two surfers, and we had to create a story using words such as nearly tragically, exotic, holiday among others. The participant with the best score in the test and the best story advanced to the next round of the English Olympiad, which will be on 18th January.

This year, I won the Olympiad, but everyone always has a chance. I am already looking forward to the next round of the English Olympiad.

This document has been filmed in Venezuela – South America. Czech and Slovak cavers and adventurers have tried to discover huge cave systems hidden in the Table Mountains, which were created in the Paleozolic Era.

Cavers found a very big entrance to one of the caves. They said that it was so big that a plane could go through it. They were trying very hard to find more caves, but they had to come back to their base camp, because this cave system was totally buried at the end of the way.

After that they took a helicopter and they went further. They divided their team to three groups. Each group had

a different way back to the base camp. One group found another entrance into their cave.

These men are very brave and fearless. They were the first ones, who have ever discovered

these caves, mountains, plants, animals, nature and life of itself in this prehistoric part of the world.

Theatre Performance about one Slovak Hero

Do you know any Slovak hero? I know one. His name is Adam Šangala. He came from a very beautiful region of Slovakia – Orava.Students from the Secondary Grammar School in Šurany went to the Theatre of Andrej Bagar in Nitra to see the musical Adam Šangala.

The plot of the story is very easy. Poor boy Adam Śangala leaves his home to revenge his father´s death. He was looking for love, he finds her, believes her, and leaves her. The name of his love is Betka .They have got a child called Adam. The end of the musical is sad, because the hero dies.

The strengths of the musical are: good music, quick dances, popular actors, interesting scene, and educational aim.

There were also

weaknesses of the musical e.g. uncomfortable chairs to sit in for 3, 5 hour.

I recommend

this musical to everyone

who likes good work on the stage, interesting plot and catchy music.

Breaking the generation barriers with IT

The generation gap between grandparents, parents and grandchildren is very obvious. We wanted to try and break these gaps with the help of computers and a common lecture.

On the 17th November, our class organised a small lecture for our parents and grandparents. We were thinking a lot about the themes of the lecture and the time and date of its organising. Because the 17th November was a holiday in our country, we decided to spend the time

teaching the older generation. We wanted

to teach them the basics of computer skills. For example how to turn the computer on, how to work with text documents and a general description of the accessories like the mouse. Our grandparents were very communicative and they were eager to learn something new. We taught them how to create an e-mail address, how to read news on the internet and many more. Our class was trying their best to share all their skills.

Knowing the basic computer skills is a very important skill to have in these days. Computers are everywhere and are used in all parts of our lives. These basic skills may be

used for communicating with their family that lives far away from home. Or for writing basic letters and e-mails.

We hope that our parents and grandparents will use their newly acquired skills in the future to make their lives easier and better. We would be happy to help them to improve even more, if they would want to.

It was certainly a new experience not only

for them, but also for us. Overall, the lecture was a great success.

Practice in nature.

How many people can orient in nature without modern technologies? How many people know the theory of first aid and

how many people are able to use it in real life? How many people know how to shoot from air gun or how to throw “grenade“?

Students from III.B, III.C and VII.A classes learned and practised these activities in a three day course that took place in days from 12th to 14th September 2011. We learned how to orient in a terrain with a compass in the first day.. We also trained our observing abilities. We were testing our sport abilities during the second day. Students were divided into three groups and each group had to cross through stands. There were three stands: throwing grenade and ball, shooting and

climbing on rope. There was a lecture with discussion about first aid and AIDS/ HIV in the third day. There were also shown situations when we have to use first aid.

We learnt a lot of useful and practical things for life during those three days. We hope that younger students of our school will enjoy a similar practising in nature next year as we did.

Identity Card

Nowadays is modern to download some film and watch it at home. The cinemas in small towns, e.g. like Šurany, are not as overcrowded as in the past. Cinema atmosphere cannot be replaced by anything. We wanted to remind to our students the atmosphere of cinema. On 17th October 2011 we watched film Identity card in Šurany’s cinema. This film was situated in 1970‘s.It shows us story about 4 young boys, who rise up against political system by their behaviour. The students could notice the differences between 70’s years of 20th century and nowadays. The biggest difference is political system. The film shows us life in socialism and at the same time it citizens it. It also depicted the police brutality and their own internal fight. We cannot tell that film condemns only the system. Young people were criticized too, because of drinking alcohol which is nowadays widespread between teenagers.

Most of us could bring lesson and have learned a lot of new things. We think that nobody from us would be able to live in that age. Our students enjoyed the film and we are greatful that we reminded by this way what the life of our parents and grandparents was during a long time living in isolation from democratic and independent world.

Our visit in Jesienka

October is the month, when the leaves start falling down from trees and autumn comes to nature. In occasion of October, Month of respect to the elders, we decided to visit the Home Jesienka Šurany. Our aim was to cheer the inhabitants by a short cultural programme and brief discussion with them.

This pleasant event was organised by the Student School Council of our school under the direction of Ms. Professor Fialová. The programme was hosted by Lucia Krajčovičová. I, Žofia Šutková and Veronika Šebeňová sang traditional Slovak folk songs to an accordion music played by Michaela Hajtmanová. We sang with the seniors their favourite folk song Slovenské mamičky.

We discussed various kinds of topics within the visit. The seniors told us their life stories, shared they experiences, their memories from childhood. We were interested in their present activities and interests. They mostly like politics and watching serials.

We hope that our visit was not the last one and it will inspire more students to do more voluntary activities. The biggest advantage of doing such activities is demolition of barriers between the generations and building solidarity to the people who need our help. Just a moment, smile and lovely word. If we will learn it, we are not alone in the old age.

Excursion in Palárikovo

Students from the Secondary Grammar School in Šurany visited the mansion in Palárikovo on 29th September 2011.

It was a very nice sunny day. We travelled by bus. We could see a very large beautiful park what we, the Slovaks, call of English style because of infrequent plants, trees and wild animals. Guide in the mansion was very good, she told us a lot of interesting things about the building e.g. it is a hunting mansion which used to be a property of Ministry of Agriculture in the eighties of the 20th century and it is the property of the West Slovak Forest Cooperation now. There were about ninety-nine small rooms in the mansion in

the past and nowadays there are only about forty-four big rooms which serve for accommodation of guests. There are suites for the president and other important

people who come to the mansion. Nowadays there are sometimes meetings of the

Slovak government

because the mansion is equipped with two conference rooms. There is also a museum and a marriage hall where young fiances like to be married.

We mostly liked furniture and very nice decorations in mansion. We spent there about one hour and I can say that it was very nice and educational excursion for us.

We would like to thank to Mrs. Halásová our history teacher for the very nice excursion.

Workshop in a library

Students of VII.A organized a meeting associated with workshop in cooperation with the City Library of Michal Matunák in Šurany on 15th November 2011. The topic of discussion was the forthcoming European Year on Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity, which builds on European Year 2010, dedicated to combating poverty and social exclusion and this European Year's activities to promote volunteerism. Invitation to this event was admitted by Ms Ľubica Zajacová of sections of human rights and equal treatment of the Slovak Republic Government Office, National Coordinator of the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. We invited also the students of our school, who learn about European Union in the Political Science.

Topic of the European Year 2012 was chosen for more rapid ageing of citizens in the European Union and the growing number of older people, who are today often on the outskirts of human society, and only few persons think, that they, too, need to be pleasant talked to and understood. The main aim of the Year of Active ageing is to build better relations between the generations, which would lead to greater coherence, co-generation and improve citizens' lives.

In the second part of the discussion we presented our projects about the European Union. We included many different topics in: The debt crisis in the Euro area, The fight against climate change

and energy, The Treaty of Lisbon, Lux Prize, European Year of Active Ageing

and Intergenerational

Solidarity, and ending European Year of Volunteering, the

European Parliament and human rights and the Sakharov Prize. We have focused mostly things, which concern to young people and our region.

Discussion was successful from our perspective and we are satisfied with the course. We learned many interesting facts about human rights issues and the European Union.

Our Christmas Poetry

Tree

There was a tree in the garden

It had been cut because of Christmas time

Children were happy

They wanted to feel love

Santa Claus came at night

And gave them nice presents.

Christmas time

Winter came to our town,

Snow is slowly falling down.

White blanket is all over the place,

Cold weather chills my face.

Snow flakes, that are falling, are big,

We might see the golden pig.

Christmas child

Christmas bring hope to our lives

in all of the holy nights.

Child is happy, he is smiling,

at this time, he is always shining.
