Through an agreement be- tween the Iditarod Trail Committee and District 5010 , which covers parts of Canada, Russia, and the United States, this year's race built awareness of a similar race to the finish: Ro- tary's efforts to eradicate polio. All mushers wore bibs with the End Polio Now logo emblazoned across the bottom. In addi- tion, District 5010 secured a $27,500 PR grant to sponsor four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Wa- silla Sunrise, who worked with Rotary to pro- duce two public service announcements appear- ing on television and online. Buser, who came in 18th in this year's race, displayed the End Polio Now logo prominently on his team's apparel and equipment, and sym- bolically carried three empty polio vaccine vi- als on his sled. He will continue to serve as a spokesman for polio eradication throughout the year at other events and appearances. "The End Polio Now labels all over my sled and race gear were like Teflon -- they stood out above and beyond everything else," he says. "Through miles and miles of blowing snow, the red and white really cut through, and amplified the message. "It's such a natural fit," Buser says, of using the race to promote polio eradication. "The Iditarod began as a lifesaving race, and End Polio Now is a lifesaving race." Clubs also used the excitement surrounding the event to raise funds for Rotary's US$200 Mil- lion Challenge . The Rotary Club of Anchor- age East raised $15,000 during a live prerace auction at Chilkoot Charlie's, a bar in Anchor- age. The Rotary Club of Anchorage Interna- tional held a dinner party near Willow, where the race was restarted after its ceremonial launch in Anchorage, with donations going toward the challenge. "What was exciting for us, as Alaskan Rotari- ans, is that the Iditarod is our preeminent event," says Trygve Erickson, past president of the Anchorage International club, who hosted the party with his fiancée Kimberly O'Meara, another past club president. "It was exciting to have the End Polio Now message attached to such an international sporting event." Rotary Youth Exchange students and Rotarac- tors collected coins for the challenge before and after the race and handed out End Polio Now materials. The Rotary Club of Nome held a postrace fundraiser. Past District Governor Alana Bergh, the Dis- trict 5010 Rotary Foundation Committee chair, says the main idea behind the collaboration with the Iditarod Trail Committee was to "raise awareness that polio is still out there, and that you still have to immunize your children. "We wanted to make sure people talk about it," she explains, noting that the Iditarod commit- tee's Web site, www.iditarod.com , receives millions of hits during the race. The site fea- tured a link to information about Rotary's ef- forts to end polio. Chas St. George, a spokesman for the Iditarod and a member of the Rotary Club of Wasilla, says more than 500 media representatives from around the world converge on Alaska to cover the two-week event.

Morristown

Town-Wide

Cleanup

Saturday, April 18, 2008 is the 19th annual Town-wide Clean-up. The Morristown Rotary Club helped initiate this important litter reduction program 30 years ago. Its roll is to promote a clean and beautiful Morristown. Our Club’s support of this effort has been better these last two years, we fielded a decent size clean-up crew each year; but we’d still like to see more Rotari-ans out there! We encourage all Mor-ristown Rotarians and their families to come out and help make our town even more beautiful! We will be meeting at the Town Hall parking lot (200 South Street) at 9:00am. You will be sup-plied with all work materials, a com-memorative t-shirt, and refreshments, and are only asked for 1-2 hours of your time. Please note this event is generally rain or shine, however there is a tentative rain date of Sunday the 19th in case of heavy rain. Contact Glenn Coutts for more information!

Quote of the Week

"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When to-morrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind...let it be some-thing good."

Condolences to Charlotte Luckey on the loss of her brother. Greetings and a Speedy Healing to Billie Schloerb. She just had a knee procedure and is back home now. Word has it that Scott Marum was one of the stars at the President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS). Looks like a good year ahead of us! Speedy recovery wishes to Krys Miller in her recent hip replacement. Guess having a fa-mous football player giving her pre-surgery exercises certainly must have helped. Good to see David Shapiro back after his bout with the flu. Also, how about that Prez of ours? He went to the emergency room af-ter last week's meeting with chest pains. Thank goodness it was only pneumonia - it certainly was great to see him heal so quickly. Also get well wishes to Cheryl Eggert, hope-fully by the time this is printed she will be over her asthmatic bronchitis.

The Every Rotarian, Every Year effort en-courages Rotarians worldwide to participate fully in their Rotary Foundation. Our Club President, Glenn Garth, has made the Every

Rotarian, Every Year effort one of our goals of this 2008-2009 Rotary year. We encour-age every Club member to make a $100 do-nation to the Rotary Foundation for this Ro-tary year. Tom Lanahan has accepted the responsibility of leading this effort. He will be collecting your checks, or please let him know if you have already made a contribu-tion for the 2008-2009 Rotary Year. Checks should be made payable to “Morristown Ro-tary Endowment Fund.”

Remember Tom has the hard part... he has to ask you for your check... you have the easy part, just write out the check! If you have any special circumstances that might prevent you from participating in this effort, please contact Tom.

Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund ensure a brighter future for all. Imagine how much more good we could do with the par-ticipation of Every Rotarian, Every Year.
