During a recent visit to Nigeria, Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foun-dation, said he was confident that the coun-try can eradicate polio if it capitalizes on commitments from its state and federal governments.

Gates was in Nigeria to learn more about the country's immunization efforts and its strategy to end polio.

"I see a stronger commitment, but what is needed is the financial support, teams go-ing out to find the children, and the attitude of parents to bring out children," he said at a news conference after meeting with state governors in Abuja.

Gates helped launch Nigeria's 31 January-3 February Immunization Plus Days by ad-ministering oral polio vaccine to a child at a health center in Sokoto State. He also observed vaccination teams in action.

On 2 February, he met with technical part-ners and donors supporting the country's polio eradication effort, including represen-tatives of Rotary International, the World Health Organization , UNICEF , the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion , USAID , the World Bank , and na-tional health officials.

"He extolled the virtue of Rotary and gave a strong voice to our cause," said Olubusuyi Onabolu, chair of the Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. "It was a great honor for me to present him with a yellow Rotary cap, which he immediately put on, and to say, 'Thank you, Mr. Gates.'"

At the 2009 International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, Gates wore and

autographed a similar Rotary cap, which is being auctioned on eBay through 12 Febru-ary . Proceeds will support Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradi-cation.

In northern Nigeria, the global epicenter of the type 1 poliovirus, Gates met with tradi-tional and religious leaders, mothers, birth attendants, and representatives of a Muslim women's association to discuss their ex-periences with immunization and ideas for eradicating polio.

Gates said that there is a renewed commit-ment around the world to end the disease, and that the success of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative will energize other public health efforts.

"We need this type of success to work on malaria, respiratory and diarrheal diseases, and meningitis," he said. "The delivery structure, the message, and the quality that comes from polio will be the foundation for other work."

Bill Gates meets with national and global health officials, including Nigeria PolioPlus Committee Chair Olubusuyi Onabolu (second from left), in Abuja, Nigeria.

Elmer’s Corner As we’re sure you know by now, Bob Miller is still collecting plastic shopping bags for dona-tion to the Interfaith Food Pantry. Many people have been bringing their bags to lunch each week for donation, but we don’t want our breakfast meeting to be left out! Bob Miller has announced that he will come the morning meeting the last Wednes-day of each month to pick up plastic bags. So bring in those extra bags you get when you have too many groceries to fit in the reusable cloth bags that you should be using!

From The

Sunshine Committee

The Every Rotarian, Every Year effort encourages Rotarians worldwide to participate fully in their Rotary Foun-dation. Our Club President, Glenn Garth, has made the Every Rotarian,

Every Year effort one of our goals of this 2008-2009 Rotary year. We en-courage every Club member to make a $100 donation to the Rotary Founda-tion for this Rotary year. Tom Lanahan has accepted the responsibil-ity of leading this effort. He will be collecting your checks, or please let him know if you have already made a contribution for the 2008-2009 Rotary Year. Checks should be made payable to “The Rotary Foundation.”

Remember Tom has the hard part... he has to ask you for your check... you have the easy part, just write out the check! If you have any special circum-stances that might prevent you from participating in this effort, please con-tact Tom.

Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund ensure a brighter future for all. Imagine how much more good we could do with the participation of Every Rotarian, Every Year.

Morristown

Town-Wide

Cleanup

Saturday, April 18, 2008 is the 19th annual Town-wide Clean-up. The Morristown Rotary Club helped initiate this impor-tant litter reduction program 30 years ago. Its roll is to promote a clean and beautiful Morris-town. Our Club’s support of this effort has been better these last two years, we fielded a decent size clean-up crew each year; but we’d still like to see more Rotarians out there! We encourage all Morristown Ro-tarians and their families to come out and help make our town even more beautiful! We will be meeting at the Town Hall parking lot (200 South Street) at 9:00am. You will be supplied with all work materi-als, a commemorative t-shirt, and refreshments, and are only asked for 1-2 hours of your time. Please note this event is generally rain or shine, how-ever there is a tentative rain date of Sunday the 19th in case of heavy rain.

Rays of sunshine for Ted Goodman – We miss you, Ted! We’re sending you our best wishes. If anyone would like to send a card or visit, his address is 50 Ogden Place, Morristown.

Recovery vibes for Sheila Slutsker – the news is good following her operation – you just can’t keep a good woman down. Best wishes for a beautiful recov-ery.

For another terrific woman, Pat Cunning-ham: Can’t keep her down, either. We hope to hear soon that her back problems have gone away.

Baby watch: Mike Elms could use some help, filling in with his daughter, as the family awaits the arrival of the twins. It’s a complicated time leading up to the in-evitable birth. Mike’s number is 973-998-5368.

Loving prayers and thoughts are needed for Carl Badenhausen’s son, who had a serious skiing accident. He had surgery last Sunday, and was in ICU at Newton Memorial Hospital as of the last report we receoved. We’ll keep Rotarians updated; meanwhile, we all send healing visions of health.

A visit was made last Friday by Cheryl Eggert and Dolores Bagish to see Jeanne Wenner and Charlotte Luckey in Hack-ettstown. Valentine chocolates were pre-sented and gladly accepted. (Sweets for the Sweets!). Both were doing well and another visit is being planned around Easter time. If anyone from the club wants to join us, let Dolores know.

Regarding Your

Meals Invoices

The Morristown St. Patrick’s Day Parade is March 14th this year. As usual we will meet behind the Morristown Municipal Building at our Rotary Float. Please be there before 11am. Or, meet at Matt Wirth’s house before that! Matt has gra-ciously opened his doors to us again for a pre-parade breakfast. Details to come.

The parade is always a great time! Be sure to come down early and take the opportu-nity to walk around the staging area. It is so much fun to see the Floats, the Irish Wolfhounds, Children, Fire-trucks, and all the Bands warming up! Just seeing the Young Children’s Irish Dance Group is heart warming in itself. So be sure to don your Green and join us for a fun filled day! Family and friends are also welcome to join us!

And keep in mind that the event counts as a make-up!

Hey, Don’t We

Know That Gal?

Captured by our resident photographer David Shapiro at the February 5th performance of the Colonial Symphony at the Community Theatre, our own Suzanne Samson is seen here ready to introduce Conductor Paul Hostetter. If you haven’t been out to see the symphony perform, your next chance will be May 7th, again at The Community Theatre.
