Grade 2 Camp
On Friday I attended the grade 2 camp to Mt Morton in Belgrave. I had a fantastic time with this wonderful
group of students and enjoyed watching them test out their skills and comfort zones on the low ropes course
and the rock climbing wall. I was really proud to see each student having a go and trying their best. They all
demonstrated respect to one another and their community spirit was highlighted through their support of one
another. Well done to the Grade 2 student’s and staff for organising this fantastic experience for our students.
Safety – Bike’s and Scooters
Please remember that it is imperative that all students wear a helmet when they are riding a bicycle or scooter
to school. We ask that all bike’s and scooters are walked in the school ground immediately when students arrive
at school. Students are not permitted to ride their Bikes or scooters in the grounds at all. If your child rides to
school, please be sure to discuss with them the importance of their personal safety and the safety of those shar-
ing the paths with them. Thank you
Parent Helpers in the Classroom
Over the past week I have been astounded by the large number of parent helpers in our classrooms. We have
had many mums, dads and grandparents helping with literacy and numeracy. Parent helpers are an important
piece of the education puzzle and also really add to the sense of community here at MDPS. If you are available to
be a parent helper please contact your child’s teacher and sign up.
Literature Circles in the SLU During literature circles in Mt Dandy’s Senior Learning Unit, small groups of students gather together with an
adult mentor to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students' response to what
they have read. Talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related
to the story all take place as part of the activity. Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical
thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the heart of this ap-
proach. Students reshape and add onto their understanding as they construct meaning with other readers. Final-
ly, our literature circles guide students to a deeper understanding of what they read through structured discus-
sion.
Last week I had the great privilege of visiting the SLU to see their Literature Circles in action. I was extremely
proud to see each student working in a small group of three to seven students working closely with their peers
and an adult mentor, having in depth discussions about the text they have been reading. The conversations were
powerful, student lead and provided a genuine way of critically analysing the text they were engaging with. Dur-
ing this session there were at least five parent helpers along with student teachers and Mrs Becker and Miss
Brehaut. A photo is included on page two of this edition of the Mt Dandy News. A great job SLU!
Mother’s Day Stall
Thank you so much to prep mum Nikki Kouris for organising this year’s wonderful Mother’s Day stall. It was
sensational to watch the students excitedly choosing special gifts for their mum. Thanks to Nikki’s hard work the
students had a lot of variety to choose from. We’d also like to thank the parent volunteers who staffed the stall
as well. I know they had a great time helping the students purchase gifts.

LIBRARY NEWS… The library will be closed until further notice while ALL books currently on loan are returned for a mid year stocktake, before our new library system is unveiled and ready for use. This means we will be able to have a current read of ALL library resources before the new system is put into practice, and give us the opportunity to chase up after any resources that seem to have been mislaid. I ask ALL parents, students and teachers to check for ANY and ALL library books to be returned to the library by WEDNESDAY May 15-THAT'S THIS WEDNESDAY. I also ask everyone to be patient with me, and I will endeavour to have the library back to its normal borrowing/returning system by end of next week. I apologise for any inconvenience, especially to those working very hard to achieve their star reading goal.It is only for a very short time, and the new system should be QUICKER, EASIER AND MORE ACCURATE for us to use. Thank you, in advance, for your patience and support during this transitional period. Mrs Sinclair
Grade 2 Parents On Friday 24th May 1/2PW
will have their grade assembly in
the multi beginning at 9am. We
will show all of the photos from
our camp to Mt.Morton.
All welcome.

MOTHERS DAY STALL Happy Mother's Day for last Sunday. Thank you so much Phil, Sandy and Sarah for helping me on the Mother's Day stall this year. Thank you to everyone who also offered to help. I really enjoyed my first stall and I am very grateful for all of Trisha's expe-rience and guidance.
I have had a few reports of some broken butterfly/flower/dragonfly garden ornaments. I have passed this information on to the supplier but unfortunately I have had very little response from them.
If the children who purchased these ornaments would like to meet me on Friday at 8.50 am just outside the front doors, I would like them to choose another gift to replace these broken ornaments.
Thank you and I am looking forward to seeing the hundreds of happy little faces again in September for the Father's Day Stall. Regards, Nikki Kouris
