Parent Helpers in the classroom As Semester 1 draws to a close we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful parent helpers. This
year has seen an increase in the number of parents supporting the teaching and learning programs for our chil-
dren. Parents have been helping with Literacy, Numeracy and other classroom programs as well as supporting
our specialist classes. Thank you all very much for your valuable contributions and we are looking forward to
working closely with you in Semester 2.
New Landscaping We currently have two landscaping projects underway. The first is the embankment adjacent to the top basket-
ball court which is having a retaining wall built that will be the future site for our chicken pen and vegetable gar-
dens. The second project taking place is the replacement of paths and retaining walls in the Helen Dixon em-
bankment. This will make the embankment safer for our students to use. We ask that all students stay well away
from these areas whilst works are underway.
2.30pm Finish on Friday Please remember that all students will be dismissed at 2.30pm on Friday. Out of School Hours Care will be avail-
able from 2.30pm. Any students catching the bus towards Olinda will be walked to the bus stop to catch the
2.21pm bus. School recommences on Monday July the 15th.
Parent Teacher Interviews—Tuesday 25th and 26th June Parent teacher interviews are an integral and vital component of the student reporting process and a highly valu-
able part of the student learning journey. Therefore it is important that each family attend an interview with
their children’s teachers. If you haven’t organised an interview time please visit your child’s teacher to do so.
Grade 56R will be having their interviews early next term.

Maths Game
‘Knockout Nine’
Materials: two six sided dice
2-4 players
Each player writes the numbers 1-9 on a piece of paper. The first player rolls the dice. The player may cross out the numbers shown on the dice OR the sum of the two numbers.
Eg. If a 4 & 2 are thrown the player can cross out 4 and 2 OR 6. When 6 numbers or less are left only a single dice is used. The
player’s turn continues until the player cannot cross off any more numbers.
The remaining numbers are totalled and this is the score for that round.
After five rounds the player with the smallest total wins!

KEEPING SIBLING PEACE AT HOME Posted by: Michael Grose
How do you respond when kids fight and argue? Do you make a plea for peace, order the combatants to their bedrooms or find out who
caused the infraction?
It’s almost impossible to stay out of kids’ fights as they’re usually noisy, and invariably at least one child will come to you to inter-
vene.
Sibling fighting is so common these days that it seems to be the first commandment of childhood: Thou shalt fight and argue with your
brother and sister until your parents can’t stand it any longer.
Parenting ideas research suggests sibling fighting is a concern in three out of every 4 families with more than one child.
It helps to have a realistic attitude to children’s disputes. Kids are learners when it comes to resolving conflict so physical means,
name-calling and bickering are commonly their preferred tools.
Conflict itself is not harmful, but the way disagreements are resolved is the big issue for parents.
There are two broad approaches you can take when kids fight – get involved or stay out of it. You need to be lead by their age and
maturity, and ability to sort things out themselves, as well as the nature of the problem itself. Some issues such as seating rights on
the family couch are not worth fighting over so wise parents will stay right out of this issue.
If you decide to remain neutral then bear it, beat it or boot them out when they fight is your best policy. That means put up
with the fight if you can, go into another room or send kids outside if they are fighting.
This approach works when sibling fighting is for the purpose of involving parents, which it often is. It gets you out of the picture.
Parents are as predictable as washing machine cycles always responding to kids’ cries for help so kids soon work out they have a
great way to keep mum or dad busy with them. If this is the case, then break the pattern by refusing to become involved. “You
guys can work this out for yourself” is the idea.
There are times when you just can’t ignore a fight and your assistance is needed to resolve the dispute. If this is the case, let them
know you’ll help them work out a solution to their problem but avoid taking sides, which they invariably want.
Use kids’ conflict as a teachable moment where you can coach them to resolve their relationship issues in more socially acceptable
ways, than hitting, yelling and sulking. Here’s some ideas when they fight:
1. Focus on emotions first. Get kids to calm down before you talk with them. This may mean they sit on their own or go out-
side and let off steam physically. Validate their emotions. ‘You seem pretty worked up about this.” ‘Yep, I can see you’re mad at
your sister.’
2. Focus on the problem, not the fight. Ignore the ‘she hit me first’ type arguments kids often put forward. Drill down onto
the issue at hand. If it’s a dispute over TV-watching then focus on better ways of sharing the TV rather than focusing on the the
fight.
3. Get them to see two sides the story. The hardest part in any dispute, whether in a family or an international conflict, is to
get those involved to see the other side of the story. Listen to your kids and try to get them to see the situation from the other’s
viewpoint. “What do you think your brother wants?” It’s also useful to get kids to think about their own responses and look for
better ways to respond next time. “What were you thinking when you took your sister’s toy?” “What would you do next time?”
4. Restore the relationship. Focus on relationships rather than on problems. With young children, in particular, the issue they
were fighting about is generally long-forgotten by the time a parent intervenes. An apology, a hug or a joint treat are some ways to
help restore relationships with kids.
The measure of a strong family is not so much whether siblings fight, but will they pull together when the chips are down. This is
the case in most families. Kids love each other hard, and unfortunately for a parent’s peace of mind, they’ll fight just as hard too.
Effective parents know that kids generally need to be given opportunities to resolve their own relationships issues themselves. But
they also recognise that some sibling disputes offer valuable opportunities to teach kids the skills to resolve conflict without resort-
ing to power or other less savoury means.

3/4A have Epals (school children that they write to) in New Zealand. To help 3/4A
learn more about New Zealand we asked Nikki Burgess (Max Thornton’s Mum) to
come in and teach us more about it, as she is from New Zealand. Here are some re-
ports from 3/4A on what they have learned.
OLIVIA AND AMY’s…FACTS ABOUT NEW ZEALAND Max Thornton’s Mum Nikki came to 3/4A. She showed us some things from New Zealand. We have Epals in New Zealand. We saw the Haka dance. Nikki brought in some Poi’s for us to see, they are used in dancing. New Zealand is a small country similar in size to Great Britain or Japan. It has a population of only 4 million people. It’s also gloriously uncrowded! The people are called Kiwi’s because of the birds. New Zealand is also known as ‘The land of the long white cloud.’
max and leo’s… facts about new zealand!
New Zealand is the only country with Kiwis
The Maori have lots of legendary stories called myths
They have special dances with Poi’s
We learnt “head, shoulders, knees and toes” in Maori
We learnt about the Haka and watched a movie of Max doing the Haka when he was five
The All Blacks Icon on their T-shirts is called the Silver Fern
The Fern tree is native to NZ
Poi’s are for dancing and girls mostly use them
Boys are the only ones who can do the Haka
‘Kia Ora’ means Hello!
LEARNING ABOUT NEW ZEALAND with NIKKI BURGESS
RAKAU STICKS
Nikki has also worked with 2/3B, 3/4A and 3/4S during Friday Fun and held a Rakau
Stick making workshop. Rakau sticks are traditional music sticks used by Maori peo-
ple. Nikki and Max taught the children a sequence to follow along with. It looked and
sounded amazing! The Middle school would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Nikki,
Max and James for all of the time and effort they put into helping us learn more
about New Zealand.

Hope for those suffering Learning,
Concentration and Behavioural Difficulties! A natural, drug free program developed in Israel is giving hope to kids in Melbourne. Intelligence Integration program
has helped thousands of children and adults in Israel and the USA experiencing difficulties with reading (dyslexia),
writing (dysgraphia), auditory processing disorder (APD), attention deficit (ADD/ADHD) and concentration.
Anthony Andrews, teacher of Intelligence Integration Australia says that contrary to popular perception, learning dif-
ficulties has nothing to do with our academic capacity. Usually they represent the inability of the body to carry out
tasks. Intelligence Integration Australia has been and can be a natural alternative for many of these difficulties. It is
referred to as “the physical natural foundation of learning” because it looks to the body as the primary source of such
difficulties. Anthony argues that while medications may treat symptoms, finding the root source of the difficulty and
building key neural networks that can improve these abilities with a natural treatment, can help to resolve or signifi-
cantly improve the problem altogether.
“A prestigious health magazine in Israel calls this program one of the 100 milestones in the history of
alternative health”
A parent says: “My daughter was diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. Anthony’s program was more affordable than
other programs. Our daughter went from failing at school to getting top marks, being voted House Captain and a confident
public speaker. Her teachers remarked she became a completely different child after doing the program. I highly recommend this pro-
gram to all parents.”
