With school starting, the decision was made to wait to begin our children/youth

programs to allow for a healthy beginning to the school year, and to see how things go

for our young ones regarding the virus and variants.

We are currently looking at an October start,

and will be keeping you up to date as decisions are made.

Keep an eye on the announcements!

WELCA

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to all who have mailed or brought their tithes and offerings to the church during these pandemic days. Electric, water,

phone...well the regular bills continue to arrive in the mail as you know. When you place your envelope into the mail slot, please be sure to push it in

all of the way. Thanks. You are helping to keep the physical church open. Thank you for being the true church and for your prayer support.

Please Remember When you write a check to the food shelf, where does it go? “World Hunger” goes to the synod and “Food Shelf” goes to Faith church Food Shelf. If you want your gift to go to our food shelf beside the church door, you must label your check and envelope to say: “Zion Church Food Pantry”.

WELCA usually meets the second Sunday of each month during coffee hour. September 12th will be our first meeting for this year.

Please watch Zion Web page and regular bulletins for any changes. We always can phone each other to confirm times.

Let us remain safe—together. Lucy: 715-718-0662

The Food Shelf beside the main door is being used!

Thank you to those who fill the shelves so there is food for others in need.

We continue to see many using this food shelf. The need is great. As fall approaches we find more need for Toilet Paper, Pre packaged meal

combinations, and need to replenish staples. School supplies also help. Thanks to all who have stepped up to keep these shelves full.

Prayers of Protection: Nathan Anthony, Mathew Sherwood, Nathan Madsen, Keely Nelson, Andrew Hutton, Andrew Mattson, Joshua Seifert, and Michael Kuecher for all those who are in military service throughout the world. Mathew Sherwood has graduated from two-week training for Warrant & Officer Candidate. Congratulations to Matt! Keeley is stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. She is working as an EMT in the Women’s Clinic. She is visiting Superior and returning to bas on September 5th. Please let me know of an update for our Military men and women. Prayers for them on Sundays is not enough. An address would be appreciated for Birthday and Christmas greetings. Several of our Military will be detained due to Corona Virus stipulations. Pray for them as they find terms extended and time will not allow them to visit family prior to next assignment. I would like to update our Military service men and women's information. It's time to be aware of new names, family members and relatives who are fighting to keep us free and safe. Any information will help, so please call me or leave a message. Thank you. Tuesday Missions

Tuesday’s Spiritual Growth and Mission’s is currently not meeting. There are still many who continue to work from home. If you need supplies so you too can work at home through the summer, please phone Tanya Nelson at 218-391-4709. For a financial donation you may write a check written out to Zion Lutheran Church and put “Tuesday’s Missions Group” in the memo line. Thank you and God Bless! Tanya

Coronavirus. Guidelines and regulations change as quickly as the weather in the Northland. Pastor continues to add encouraging words and information to the Web page. Please check that often. The first concern is to keep all of us safe and healthy. Thanks to all who have used masks when in public places. And thanks to the many who have stepped up and made the masks for those who are in jobs that cannot be done from home. We watch the building and utility workers, maintenance and services, grocery and retail persons that we rely on to provide for our needs. Remember to thank them when they place items into the trunk of your car. Most of the outside work has been completed for the year. We continue to clean and organize the inside as we plan a time to reopen safely. Many hands are needed to help us all stay safe and still maintain an inch of normalcy. Thanks to all of those folk.

We are missing our friends, family members, and our quilting ladies. We are recovering from surgery, honoring covid restrictions, and health problems. By the grace of God, we continue to gather as we are able, to work for Him in providing warm and colorful quilts for those in need. Thanks for donations of fabrics. We’re now, working for storage cabinets and warm quilt batting for colder temperatures.

Thank you. Jan Arena at 715-817-8567.

Church Council Meeting Minutes for July 15th, 2021

The meeting was called to order by President Vicki Holm at 6:04pm. Present were Deanna Traynor, Bob Warner, Christel Lewis, Aine Merrill, Margaret Sundet, Donna Meltz, Vicki Holm and Lynn Rochon. Devotions were given by Aine. Next month they will be given by Lynn.

A motion was made by Lynn and seconded by Donna to accept June’s secretary’s report. Motion carried.

Treasurers Report: Aine reported that income through the end of June was $58,319. We re-viewed the check register for June. Bob reported we have about $11,000 in the checking ac-count and we owe about $62,000 on the mortgage. We have not received the paperwork from Chippewa Bank to forgive the PPP loan. Where Aine works, they have received the paperwork, submitted it, and their loan has been forgiven already. Vicki will call Chippewa to see if we can get the paperwork. Bob and Aine will work on getting our paperwork together to give to Chippewa once we get their paperwork. Discipleship Report: Because children have not been vaccinated for COVID, VBS will be held outside this year. It will be held in the evenings so all ages can attend. The dates are August 16 th in Billings Park and August 19th at WI Point. There will be crafts, games, treats and lessons. Leaders and helpers are still needed. A motion was made by Bob and seconded by Aine to change next month’s council meeting to Wednesday, August 18th so it doesn’t conflict with VBS. Motion carried. Leaders are still needed for Sunday School. Worship and Music Report: The hand bell choir, Bronze Voices, will be performing in Sunday worship on July 25th. Operations and Finance Report: Aine talked to Thrivent about getting a loan to fix the stained glass window. Paul talked to Superior Glass about fixing it. Knute Pedersen from Superior Glass came out with a lift to look at the window and several people got up in the lift to get a closer look. They think they might know a way to fix the problem but want to do a little of it first to see if it works. They will not charge us for that. If it does work, they will give us an estimate to fix the rest of it. A motion was made by Bob and seconded by Donna to accept all the reports as given. Motion carried. Unfinished Business: 6 people spent about 3 hours going through names in Shepherds Staff to determine if they are active or not. We need to get the active households down to 150, which is what we are licensed for. Bob spent time working with the software and Aine agreed to do the work of pairing down the names. New Business: Tanya Nelson from HDCHRC sent an email to Zion to see if she can put a donation box out for school supplies for the at-risk youth program. A motion was made by Bob and seconded by Aine to authorize Tanya to put a donation box out for school supplies. Motion carried. Lynn opened up the church for a youth group from Illinois that spent the night at Zion. They then wanted to go to Duluth for dinner. Since she was not authorized to give out a key or the lock box code, she came back to church to let them back in when they got back. The group will be back tomorrow to spend the night before heading back to Illinois. She will give the leader the lock box code for when they want to leave for dinner and return. It will be an agenda item for next month’s council meeting to discuss having a key available for groups like this. A motion was made at 6:49pm by Donna and seconded by Bob to adjourn. Motion carried.

PASTORS PAGE

Wouldn’t it be nice if we just got signs from God that were clear, instead of trying to figure out our next right move? Instead, we are frequently left to try discern God’s will without a clear, concise, obvious vision. Our best work seems to happen when we have considered all our options, prayed about what we are considering, then decided.

Of course, not all our decisions work out the way we want them to. Sometimes we end up in a world of hurt because our thoughts were centered on what we hoped God wanted rather than what God actually wanted. And sometimes – and I believe this absolutely – God puts in a place where we struggle in order to learn something.

Right now, of course, we are struggling with the idea of how or if we wish have a closer working relationship with Bethel and Pilgrim Lutheran churches.

I have been surprised by some of the things I have heard from members of Zion. There seems to be a belief that somehow or another the other churches are going to make us do things we don’t want to do. Or, conversely, make us stop doing things that we currently do.

The truth is that we are not going to give up any of the ministries or missions that we have here at Zion – unless WE decide that, with God’s guidance, it is time to end those ministries. I would hate to see the food shelf right outside our front door not being stocked. I would hate it if we stopped making mittens or quilts. Our dinners that we’ve been able to continue to host even during the Covid-19 pandemic have been such a blessing to both those who are fed and those who are doing the feeding.

The reality is that I as your pastor cannot make a determination on what we will do in moving forward. Nor can either of the other churches. Each congregation will decide what they wish to do. And the reality is that each congregation might decide that their ministries and missions are best done on their own rather than working together. And for some of those ministries, they are probably right.

I have heard that “some people” (I HATE that phrase) have decided that they shouldn’t bother giving to the church anymore, since we’re just going to be shutting the door and leaving. Or questions about why we should bother repairing the stained glass window in the front of the sanctuary if that’s what going to happen. I am frankly disappointed if these things are actually true.

The truth is that we are in discussion about what might happen in the future with these three congregations. And those congregations might lead to change – and they might not. There are two things that I have recently read about change. The first is that people don’t really fear change, they fear loss. I believe that we are not going to lose anything whatever we decide to

do. There might be some changes in how we do things, but then again, there might be no changes at all.

The other thing I read, and it was attributed to Bishop Laurie Skow-Anderson. She said that change happens at the speed of trust. I know that trust can be hard when you don’t feel like you know what’s going on. I have tried to keep people informed as well as I can, and if you feel as if I have failed, I apologize. But I do hope that you can trust the process, which includes prayerful consideration of what we will do.

And remember, we – the entire congregation – will be the ones who decide how we move forward.

God bless us all – Pastor
