Welcome to the June edition
of The Link&
Welcome to the June edition of The Link. Can’t believe that the summer
months are upon us already. Good luck to all students who are coming to an end of their academic year. Please take a look at page 20 if you are making decisions about college or university. This area has so many dedicated people willing to volunteer and organise so many charity events, fundraisers, clubs & societies and we try and support and promote as many as we can, however as you have probably noticed we are running out of space so we are starting a clean up process
as I’m sure we are advertising Clubs & Societies that may no longer be running. We will just be covering local events in the August edition as this will be our Summer magazine for locals & tourists visiting this beautiful area...but don’t worry as Club & Societies information is updated on our
website each month at www.thelinkpublications.co.uk. But if you would like to promote your Club or Society in the September edition of the magazine please email details to [email protected] by the 10th August. We have limited space so please keep your entry to no more
than 100 characters. This way hopefully we will keep the information up-to-date and relevant. Please call me on 07711 639934 if you would like to discuss.
We have lots of great businesses in the area and Larry is hiding at one of
them... Last months winner can be found below.. Good Luck!
Don’t forget to contact us if you are a local business and haven’t tried advertising with us yet. Why not call, email or text to find out about our
current offers and how we can help you can promote your business in this area. Until next month,

Host Families Needed
SOL is a unique and innovative language school and educational charity that provides exciting English language courses for students from Eastern and Central Europe and beyond.
We are looking for caring host families in the Bideford and Barnstaple areas who would be willing to offer accommodation and some of their time to enable our students to experience family life in North Devon. We need both regular and occasional hosts.
Our students have a full daily programme from Monday to Saturday with Sunday being a day to enjoy with their host families. The courses are from 7 to 10 days in length starting in February through to December.
If you feel you may be interested in being a host family and earning some extra money, please contact us.

Loving Libraries by Nick Arnold
Time was when summer meant balmy days and siestas – not so your local library where a wild stampede of happenings share a secret
APPLEDORE LIBRARY librarians are high-fiving after a spring full of epic events. For example, April saw no fewer than three kids’ events. And there’s no rest this month – on Thursday 2nd June there’s a free craft event at 10 am. Local groups continue to meet in the Events Room. The Appledore Residents’ Association gather there on 6th June at 7.30 pm and there are maths classes on Saturday mornings at 10 am with Karen Curry. With so much going on it’s no wonder that visits to the building have doubled in the past ten years!
Nearby NORTHAM LIBRARY has gone football crazy. Lisa says “we’re polishing off our football boots and brushing up on the ‘off side’ rule’. (Note for readers who aren’t footie fans this celebrates the Euro 2016 tournament.) The fun kicks off Wednesday 1st June with football-themed kids’ craft events at 10.30 am and 2 pm. There’s a Lego session on Friday 3rd June at 10.30 am followed by board games at 2 pm. The sessions are free but please book for the crafts and Lego – phone 01237 475111. Finally – by way of gentle relaxation that Friends of Northam Library host a tea and plant sale from 2 pm on Wednesday 22nd June – plant and cut flower donations welcome in advance.
At TORRINGTON LIBRARY the story is told in pictures – our photos show young Moriah Simpson who won a book token in the Shakespeare Quiz and the Bouncing Bees group enjoying some noisy balloon fun. And the library will echo
some more to the sound of young voices this month as all the Torrington Junior School classes visit to borrow books and hear stories. Meanwhile BIDEFORD LIBRARY has gone retro. On Saturday 25th June you can bring your young craftspeople to a heritage crafts session from 10 am. Regular readers may remember an exhibition of old photos at the Library. Well, it’s back from 25th June to 2nd July. ‘Come and spot your ancestor’ says Matt. But the library is far from living in the past – on Thursday 9th June at 9.30 am there’s a special underwater under-five’s story-time to celebrate National Bookstart Week. Underwater is the theme, I hasten to add – so we won’t be seeing tots in diving suits! Instead there are stories, songs, crafts and free gifts. For the adults there are the usual groups meeting on the usual days at the usual times but this month I’ll highlight Nifty Needles. They meet every Thursday at 2 pm and welcome anyone who enjoys embroidery, quilting, knitting, crochet and other handi-crafts. What’s more similar groups meet at Northam Library and Appledore Library.
Come to think of it, so many groups meet at our local libraries that the best thing to do is go and ask a librarian about them. Or check the library website or Facebook page. And if you don’t find the group of your dreams why not set up your own? Because that’s what libraries are about – not just books but bringing people together. And in this manic midsum-mer of library events – that’s the secret of their success! Bouncing Bees group Moriah Simpson
