The Headliner

Vtw|ÄÄtv@_tftÄÄx VÄâu Northern California Region Newsletter Volume 109 Number 08 August 2008

A Word From The Tour Director Another successful barbeque at Portal Park goes down in history ... the turnout was gratifying, the food tasty, the weather exceptional ... the best I can remember and less than 80 degrees. Blissful! Once again rides were given in Fred’s 1907 Cadillac brass touring car and once again I drove modern iron. In fact, not a single El Dorado showed up for class P and I might’ve won an award, had I driven my Eldo! This year the Lincoln/Zephyr Club arrived with some exceptional cars and people. Additionally, we had returnees representing CHVA, Freewheelers, Hudson, and Imperial Clubs ... the field absolutely dazzled with chrome and bright colors ... a virtual automotive garden. The People’s Choice Award went to Jerry Emery’s (a former CLC member) drop-dead gorgeous 1941 Zephyr convertible ... a show stopper in any company. Director’s Choice Award was given to Dale and Marilee Galloway’s beautiful 1949 Cadillac Imperial Limousine, displayed prominently on the knoll overlooking the field. Congratulations to all the class winners and special thanks to Fred Bausch for orchestrating this annual event ... always great!

August brings something rather different in the way of an event we haven’t done before ... a tour of the fascinating Alameda Naval Air Museum and box lunch (see registration form elsewhere in this newsletter). This place is period and funky and filled with memorabilia, mostly from WWII. Little has changed here and the building and artifacts displayed transport you back to a time when patriotism was a given and enlisting in the US military was a proud and honorable choice.

The annual pilgrimage to Ironstone Winery is our September event ... first time for me ... and briefly visited on our National Driving Tour. The small town of Murphys comes alive for this event and lodging reservations have to be made far in advance. When we visited there in June, people raved about the restaurants, and regardless of which one they patronized, all reported the food was fabulous. Energetic types might wish to visit the nearby Mercer Caverns or just stroll around this charming little town and pop into local antique boutiques.

In November, our late afternoon planning meeting will be held in Oakland at the Buttercup Grill, adjacent to and with easy access to the I-80 freeway. We have our own room, we can order from the menu, and of course, cocktails are available. December brings a Christmas luncheon and party, also in Oakland ... and we have the entire restaurant to ourselves ... more info on both events next month.

See you on tour,

Sandy Carrion

Dad said to the best of his knowledge that the only thing he knows is missing is the hood ornament. The radiator cap is there. There are extra engine parts...what they are I can't say. There are extra wire wheels, and the side mount covers for wheels are there. I did not think to look at the mileage,

More information and photos of this “barn find” 1929 Cadillac will be provided as research into this rare car continues. [Editor]

Don Frolich Memorial Car Show & BBQ Picnic – July 27, 2008

A lovely day for a BBQ picnic, and a well arranged event! Thanks Fred and Helpers! Photos on this page include the panoramic shot of the sparkling automobiles polished and brought out for everyone to see and enjoy. At right, Fred Bausch makes announcements on the new club bullhorn. Below is Fred’s beloved 1907 Cadillac Victoria driven by Fred’s son who provided ride after ride to thrilled passengers. At the bottom of the page are Frank Saude’s 1938 Limousine and Leonard Piszkiewicz’ 1927 LaSalle Sedan.

People’s Choice Award The People’s Choice award went to Dale and Marilee Galloway and their 1949 Series 75 Limousine. What a stately car, and how conveniently it came to the rescue when the Galloway’s more modern car wasn’t up to the trip. Pressed into service at the last minute, the Limo happily brought them to the picnic in style. Below is Dale receiving the People’s Choice award.

Below left are a few of the 1949 models on display. Unfortunately, the photographer did not get a good shot of the navy blue convertible at the far right side – because that’s the car that won 1st place in this class and is owned by Rod Billings. The other two 49’s belong to Charles Thompson and Joe McDonald. The Buicks can be seen at right.

BOXED LUNCH TOUR AUGUST 24, 2008 10:30 AM

CADILLAC-LASALLE & PACKARD CLUBS JOINT TOUR Located at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda, the museum has a unique collection of artifacts and exhibits which emphasize the US Navy’s role in the defense of our nation. Rich in military and aviation history, a visit to the museum is like going back in time to WWII, right down to the gray metal chairs in the “canteen”. See panoramic views of the Bay Area, model ships and airplanes of the Maritime Force, and other vintage memorabilia. The museum will appeal to nearly all adults, particularly those who have served in the military. Check out the website at ww.alamedanavalairmuseum.org.

If you want to make a day of it, the USS Hornet is right down the street. You can browse at your leisure before and/or after lunch ... it is easy to lose track of time while perusing the exhibits. Around noon we will enjoy a boxed lunch in the authentic period lounge.

Old cars will be permitted to park behind the security fence in front of the museum. The museum is located in Building 77, 2151 Ferry Point Road, Alameda, CA 94501 at the former NAS, now Alameda Point. Lunch/admission tickets will be distributed at the door. Any questions please call Sandy Carrion (510) 522-0536 or email [email protected]. ........................................................................................................................................................... (Mail this portion with your check) Event cost is $20.00 per person which includes admission to the museum, a deli box lunch of fresh turkey or roast beef sandwich, potato salad, cookie, and beverage and event fee. Please make check payable to NORCAL CLC and mail to: Sandy Carrion, 1311 Webster Street, #E108, Alameda, CA 94501. DEADLINE IS AUGUST 18, 2008!

Here’s another opportunity to participate in one of Mike Gonzales’ renown Backroads tours in Napa Wine Country. The tour will begin at 10:30 AM in Napa, CA at the Target Shopping Center at 4000 Bell Aire Plaza at the corner of Hwy 29 and Redwood Rd/Trancas St. See map inset below.

The tour will depart Target at about 11:30 AM headed for Taylor’s Automatic Refresher Hamburger Restaurant at 644 1st St in Napa.

Following this “chow down,” the tour will drive through wine country to the Sterling Vineyards at 1111 Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga, CA 94515 (707) 942-3300.

Next is a visit to the Calistoga Bottling Company in Calistoga, CA.

And last, but definitely not least, we’ll take a look at a restoration in progress – a 1956 Cadillac Coupe de Ville belonging to Eric Jorgensen in Napa.

Tour Leader Mike Gonzales hopes that you will find this tour interesting and that you will want to come along in your vintage Cadillac or LaSalle, or barring that, come along in any conveyance that’s convenient!
