1.Iswearbythecongregation(ofProphets,angelsanddevoteesuntoMe).

2.(Iswear)bythosewhopreventthedevilsfromsoaringhigh.

3.(Iswear)bythosewhoreadouttheGloriousQur’antotheProphet,ascommandsfromMe.

4.VerilyyourProvidenceisUnique,alone,byHimself(inthecreationanditsadministration).

5.ProvidenceoftheHeavensandEarthandinbetweenandtheProvidenceoftheEast.

6.Verily,haveWeadornedtheskiesovertheearthwithstars.

7.Andprotectedthemfromeverystrong-headeddevil.

8.Whocannotoverheartheangels,highabove,andwhodarttowardsthemfromeverydirection,asshootingstars

9.todrivethemoffandforthemisever-lastingpunishment

10.exceptonewhostealsawaythecommunicationandispersecutedbyOurflamingstars.

11.Ask(associatorsofMecca),whetherascreatures,theyarestrongerthantheirforefathers(whomWedestroyedunderdisobedience).VerilyhaveWecreatedthemoutofslimyearth.

12.Rather,youaresurprised(attheirnotbelieving)andridiculingtheGloriousQur’an.

13.Andwhentheyareadvisedbyit,theydonottakealesson.

14.Andwhentheyseeanymiracletheyhootitout.

15.Andsay,“Verilythisisnothingbutanopenmagic.

16.“What!Whenwedieandareturnedtodustandbones,shallweriseagain?

17.“Andourforefathersandpredecessors,too?”

18.Say,“Yes,youwillbedisgracedinEternity.”

19.Verilytheirrising(fromthegraves)willbeonlyduetoasinglesirencall(byIsrafeel)whentheywillawakenandbelooking(attheevents)

20.andwillsay,“Alas!ThisistheJudgmentDay.”1

21.ThisistheDayyouwerefalsifyingfordispensationofDivineJustice.

Moral

Theactionsarealwaystobejudgedbyimmutablestandardofrightandwrong,butjudgmentwillconsiderage,country,station,andotheraccidentalcircumstances.Judgmentislikeapairofscalesandevidenceislikeweights,andDivineWillshallholdthebalance,withaslightjerkofaproofofDivineaffectionandofDivineLights,itwillbesufficientinmanycasestomakethelighterscaleappeartheheavier.NeverforgettheDayofJudgment.

Keepitalwaysinviewandframeyouractionsandplanswithareferencetoitsunchangingdecision(dependingonDivineLoveandofDivineLights).Loveimpliesobedience–(notecarefully)actsduetoadmixtureoffilthyearthmaybe

liable,yetproofofDivineLove,causingmentalpainfortheirissueandpenancemayleadjudgmenttorelaxation.

Verses22–74

22.Assemblethedisobedientandtheircompanionsandthose,whomtheyworshipped,

23.barringGod,andtakethemtohell.

24.Stopthemtheyshallbequestioned.2

25.What’supwithyouinwhichyoudonothelponeanother?

26.Rather,theywillbehighlyobedientonthatday.

27.Andwillapproachoneanotherasking(whydidtheymisguidethem)?

28.Themisguidedwillsaytotheir(worldly)masters,“You,underforceofyourinfluence,persuadedus(tojoinhandswithyou).”

29.Theywillretort,“Youyourselveswerenotfaithfaithful(ontheRight

Path).

30.“Wehadnocontroloveryou.Rather,youwereaheadstrong.

31.“Rightlyisconfirmeduponus,CommandofourCreator,andverilyshallwesavourpunishment.

32.“Wemisguidedyou,forverilyweourselvesweremisguided.”

33.Verilyonthatdaytheywillparticipateinpunishment.

34.Wetreatoffenderssimilarly.

35.VerilythesearethosewhoturnedtheirfaceswhenitwastoldtothemtherewasnonebutGodtooverrulethem.3

36.When,inreply,theyusedtoprotest,“Whetherforthesakeofonemadpoet,weretheygoingtogiveuptheirmaster?”

37.Rather,DivineTextbroughtfactsfromGodandverifiedtheProphets.

38.Verilyareyoutotasteapainfulpunishment.

39.Andyouwillnotberewardedbutwhatyoudeserveforyouracts.

40.ExceptGodlysincerecreatures.

41.Whoshallhaveawell-knownprovision

42.ofvariegatedfruits(servedbyservantsoftheirchoiceandwithhonorarytreatment

43.inParadiseofbounty,

44.seatedoncoaches,facingoneanother,

45.whereinshallcirclearoundcupsofwine(withoutdistasteandintoxication).

46.Whiteandpalatabletothetaste.

47.Therebeingneitherintoxicationnorill-affectingthem.

48.Andbytheirsidesshallbenymphsoflargepearleyed,lookingdownwith

modesty

99.AndAbrahamremarked,“IamsincerelydevotedtoGodtoattainproximity.”

Remember(1)“humilityandlove”areroots,mother,nurse,andfoundationofbondofvirtue.(2)Donotentertain“mentalmisgivings”and(3)impedenotthefaithfultodorighteousdeeds,and(4)assaultnottheweak,(5)andadoptnocunningandknaverytothesimple,bylayingoutasnare,whereinshallyoushallentrapped,and(6)desirenothonour,liketheproud,and(7)wealth,likethecovetous,and(8)revengenotlikethemalicious,and(9)seeknotpleasureofEpicurean,(10)andbeautylikethewanton,inoppositiontoDivineWill.Bewise(11)indesiringnomorethanwhatjusticedemands.(12)

Useitsoberly,withmodestyandhumilityofmindandwithtemperatenessandchastityofbodyand(13)distributeitsexcesscheerfullyand(14)livecontentedly.(15)donottakeafancytoworldlycuriosity,(16)gettingintothedevil’sarmy,(17)renderinghimserviceandpartnership.(18)Rememberhisbefriendingyouisdraggingyoutohell.

8.Ashewasnotsatisfiedwithanexchangeofagoat’ssacrifice,afterascertaininghisaffectionfortheProphetMd:outweighedhisloveforhisownlife.

9.WhichwastofollowinthecaseofImamHussainwherehewastobebutcheredbytheveryfellowswhoclaimedtobeProphetMohammad’sfollowers?ThiswouldgrieveAbrahamallthemoreentitlinghimtoagreaterreward.

10.Thisisthereasonwhythegoat’ssacrificeisanobligationforthepilgrims,atMeena,everyyear,andgenerallyallovertheMuslimworldannually.

11.ThisisaspecialDivineprivilegeofDivinePeaceonthe14DivineLights.

12.Ontempestrising,marinerstodeterminewhowasthesinner.

13.Jonah,attheageof30wassenttoNinevahtowarnitsinhabitants.Under33yearspreachinghecouldsecureonlytwofollowersinRubel,aphilosopherandTunukha,adevotee.BeingunsuccessfultogetmorefollowersunderTanuka’sadvice,he(Jonah)prayedforthepunishmentofhistribeandlefttheminindignation.However,uponRubel’splanning,althoughDivinedisasterasdesiredbyJonahapproached,butwasavertedandProphetJonahwasexhortedforhishasteasabove.

3.Howmanyprecedinggenerationshavebeendestroyedbeforethemwhentheycriedforrescue?Therewasnotime(beingtoolateforpenance,onseeingDivinePunishment).

4.TheyweresurprisedthatoneamongstthemclaimedtobeDivinelyinspired(asawarner)andtheinfidelssaid,“Thismanisamagicianandaliar.”

5.Hashemixedupallourdifferentgodsinone?Verilythisismarvellous.

6.Theringleaderssaid,“Letusgoonworshippingourgods.”Thisisoneoftheplannedactions.

7.Wehavenotheardofsuchathingintheoldreligion.“Thisisnothingbutamadeupfalsehood.”

8.What!HastheQur’anbeenrevealedonlyuntohimamongstus?Rather,theyareindoubtaboutMyText.Rather,theyhavenottastedMypunishment.

9.OrhavetheytreasuresofmercyofyourProvidencetheMightyEndower?

10.OrhavetheysovereigntyoftheheavensandtheEarthandbetween?Letthem,ifso,soarabove(andinterfereinMyadministration).

Prophets,havingbeenraisedamongthem,byGod,dulytrained,havebeenacontinuouscauseofcreatingdoubtastotheirbeing“GenuineDivineLights.”Ithasbeenrepeatedlypointedout.ManwouldnothavetakensocialbehaviourwithanangelorananimaloranyonesentbyGod,fromHeaven,notbelongingtohisspecies.Thedevilthuscreatedjealouslyinthem,byeulogizingworldlypursuits,belittlingEternity.

InCouplet11itisdistinctlystatedtheProphet’sfollowersforfalsifyinghimandhisfamilyasDivineLightshavenotyetbeenpunishedlikethoseoftheprecedingProphets.

Verses15–26

15.Theyarenotwaitingbutasirennotewhentheywillnotgetanopportunitytocometosenseunderpenancebeingtoolate.

16.Andtheysaid,(totheprophets),“PrayhurryupwithourshareofourpunishmentbeforeReckoningDay”

17.YoutoleratetheirstatementandthinkofDavidtheBravefacingthedifficultytoseekOurwill.

ThetwolitigantswhoclimbedupthewallwereangelsinhumanhabitationhavingcomeunderDivineCommandtotestDavid,whowithouttryingtheircaseremarkedex-parte,whichwasnotfair,uponwhichDivinewarningcametohim.

27.WehavenotcreatedHeavenandEarthinvainwhichistheideaofinfidelsforwhom,alas,isthefireofhell.

28.What!Areyougoingtoequalizethefaithful(likeDivineLightsandlikeminded)whoactrighteouslywiththeseditionists(i.e.ringleadersofmisguidance)onearth?

29.TheBookWehaverevealeduntoyouisglorioussopeopleshouldcontemplateonitsCoupletsandonlythewisepeopledocontemplateonitscoupletsadonlythewisetakealessonoutofit.

35.Heprayed,“MyProvidence,forgivemeandgrantmeakingdomwhichbefitsnoneafterme.VerilyYouareMightatendowment.”

36.Wesetwindstobeathiscommands,whichweretakinghimwherehechose.

Onpleaofsearchfortruthtocontributetopublichappiness,whenDivineTruthhasalreadycometothemsayingthereisnohappinessinthisworld,exceptundercontentment,outofvanity,scientistshaverefusedtoresigntoreligiousdiscipline,togiveupexperimentaltechnicalresearches,andhavereachedastageindiscoveryofnuclearfissure,todestroytheverycivilization,formaintenanceofwhichtheyhaveforsaken“futurestate,”disregardingDivineWisdom,whichcannotgohandinhandwithselfishness,proceedingoutofvanitytosurpassoneanother.

Lyingishatefulandaccursedvice.Itisspiritualshamelessness,physicalsinofwhichislikefornicationandpunishmentforthis,inintensity,isequivalentto70fornicationswithone’smotherinthehouseofAllah.Thecriminal,inthegrave,willsufferhammeringontheheaduntiltheDayofJudgment.Itbringsdowncursesfrom70,000angels,andtheworstinnature,itiswhenimputedtoGodortheDivineLights.

Nottheleastmisfortuneisaprominentfalsehood,whichbecomesafactinanapocryphaltradition,leadingtopublicmisguidance.Onecannotappreciatefaithunlesshegivesuplying.Itisalocktoallsins,andisoutsidethesphereofafaithful.Itslegality,whereagitationislikelytocropuporlifeofafaithfulinvolvedorreconciliationistobeeffected,ispermissible,butequivocally.Husbandscantelltheirwiveshelovesthemandtodivertthechildrentovirtuousacts,promisesmaybeheldout,incrusadeitisallowable.

TheProphetpromisedParadisetoafaithfulwho(1)furnishestrueinformation,(2)fulfilspromise,(3)refundsdeposit,(4)avoidsunlawfuleye,(5)controlshishandfromtyranny,and(5)controlshispassioninspeech,stomach,andsensualpleasures.

80.andinothersyouhavebenefit,meetingyourwants.

81.HeindicatesHissigns(ofHisexistencesandUnity)whichofthemyoudeny?

82.Doyounotmoveabouttheearthandcontemplatewhathasbeentheendofyourpredecessorsmostofwhowerestrongerthanyouandhavelefttheirrelicsbehind?Nothingofwhichtheyhaveachievedcouldsavethem.

83.WhentheProphetscametothemwithdistinctproofs,theywerequitepleasedwithwhatofworldlyknowledgetheyalreadyhad.Andthepunishmentseizedthemfortheirhavingridiculedthem.

84.WhentheysayOurpunishment,theysaid,“WehavebelievedinGodtheUniqueandareawayfromwhatwehaveassociatinghitherto.”

85.Admissionoftheirfaith,onseeingthepunishmentshallnotbenefitthem.ThishasbeentheDivinepractice(ofyore)withregardtoHiscreatures,andtheinfidelsshallbethesufferers.

RegardingthesealingoftheheartinCoupletOneabovereferstothoseofinfidelsandassociators.Theirheartsareeitherinvertedorrenderedincapableofguidanceunderobstinacy.RegardingassociationinCouplets6and7above,ismeantagroupfollowingunauthorizedleaderswhorefusetopayKhums,thelegitimatedueforDivineLights.Itsapplicationmayalsobeextendedtoallsuchcreatures,whichhavebeeninformedofIslambutprideandvanityandworldlyengagementspreventedthemtoacceptit,orgothroughit.

9.Askthem,“DoyoudenyHimWhocreatedEarthintwo(periodsor)daysandassociateotherswithHim,WhoistheCreatoroftheworld.

10.AndHeraisedmountainsoveritmakingroadsthereinandfertilizedthesoil,fixingindueproportionprovisionforalltheinhabitantstherein,infourseasons.

11.ThenHeturnedtocreationoftheheavens,whenitwasingaseousstage,commandingBe.Theycompliedtherewithwillingly.

12.Hemadethesevenheavenstherefromintwodaysandcommandedangelsanddecoratedthelowestheavenwithstarstopreventthedevilsfromrisingabove,whichisthedesignoftheMightyOmniscient.

15.Andthetribeof‘AdwereproudofitsstrengthonEarth,withouthavinganygroundforitandsaid,“Whoissomightyaswe?”DidtheynotnoticeitisGodWhocreatedthemandisMightierthantheyandtheyweredisputingOurmiracles.

16.SoWesentdownastronggaleinevildays2tosavourthemdisgracefulpunishmentintheworldandofReckoningDayshallbeworse,whentheyshallnotbeassisted.

17.AndWeguidedthetribeofThamood,buttheypreferredworldlylifetoeternity,solighteningseizedthemfortheiractions.

18.AndWesavedthefaithful,whowerepious.

Moral

AtraditionreferstocreationofEarthonSundayandMondayandmountainsonTuesdayandvegetationandtreesonWednesday,theheavensonThursday,thesunandthemoonandthestars,angels,andlastlymanonFriday.Theoriginofcreationhavingstartedwithagreenelement,liquefiedunderDivineGlory,andboiledandshakentofoamandgas,fromwhichlandandcloudswereformed.ThesewerecommandedtofunctionasperDivineWillandenergized.

FourperiodsreferredtoinCouplet10abovearefourseasons–spring,summer,autumnandwinter,winternecessaryforflowering,fructifyingandgrowingofcrops.TheMightyCreator,byeffectingdifferenceinlatitudeandtiltingtheearth’saxistoitsplaneoforbit,withvariationoflandandsea,andcontoursontheground,causingvariationofheat,atdifferentplaces,indifferenttimes,toregulatefoodproductionforitsinhabitantsfromthePolestotheEquator(ispraiseworthy).

19.Untilthey(infidels)allcometoHellontheDay,whentheenemiesofGodshallbeassembledtheretoandbedetained.

20.Whentheywillbequestionedandtestimonyagainstthem,fromtheirears,eyesandotherorgansfortheirdeeds,willberecordedagainstthem,ondenialofcharges(byvocalizingtheseorgans).

21.Andtheywouldaddresstheirorgansastowhytheyhaveattestedagainstthem,theywouldreply,“Godendoweduponuspowerofspeech,asHehasdoneonothers,andHeitisWhocreatedyoufirstandtoHimhaveyoureverted.”

22.Youwerenottohideanyactfromyourears,eyes,andotherorgansofyourbody,ratheryoupresumedwronglyinsupposing,verilyGoddoesnotknowmanyofyouracts.

23.ThiswasyourpresumptionaboutGodwhichdestroyedyouandyoutrunedoutamongstthelosers.

24.IftheytoleratethepainsofHell,itistheirdestination,andiftheyofferpenance(atthisstage)itshallnotbeaccepted.

25.Wefixedforthem(ontheirdenialofDivineGuides)suchcompanionswhoeulogizedintheireyeswhatwasflourishingintheworldandshowedfalsityofEternity.SocametrueOurCommands,inthecaseofprecedingtribes,betheyofmenorspiritinwhichtheyshallbeamongthesufferers.

Moral

Vocalizationofvariousorgansisnothardtobeappreciatedwhenthebrainwhichisthestorehouseofhumanactivitiescanbemadetofunctionlikeaphonographbyitsmaker.pasteventsarestoredinetherealsphereunderelectromotivewaves.ItisvanitytobepresumptuousofDivineTruthsandtodiscardtheminvainglorytolittleknowledgeofpsychologywhichisstillininfancyandnottofollowDivineLightssentasDivinemercy,forguidancefromtheProvidencetoWhomshalleverybodyultimatelyreverttorenderaccountofhisdeedsinthisworld,fromwhencethereisnoescape.

26.Andtheinfidelssaid,“DonotlistentothisQur’anandfrownitinhueandcry(initsresistance)soastooverpowerit.

27.Weshallcertainlyseverelypunishtheinfidelsandawardthemworsepunishmentfortheirdeeds.

28.ThisistherewardofDivineenemies,hell,whichwillbetheirpermanentabode,arewardfortheirintentionallitigationwithOurCommands.

29.AndtheinfidelswillpraytotheirProvidencetopointthemoutthosetwo(immediatesuccessorsoftheProphet)bornof(joint)manandspiritsoastobringthemunderneaththeirfeet,tobecaseintolowestHell.

30.Verilythosewhoadmitted(i.e.believedin)Godinwordsof(asperdeclaration)ofDivineLightsandweresteadfastintheirfaith3shallseeangelscomingdowntothemonthedeathbedsaying“Benotafraidorgrieved(atcalamity)andbepleasedwithParadisewithwhichyouarepromised.”4

31.Wehavebeenyourfriendsintheworld,andshallalsoassistyouineternity,whereinyoushallhavetoyourtaste,andwhatyoudemand.

32.AsanentertainmentfromtheAll-forgivingandtheAll-merciful.

AttachmenttoDivineLightsneedstenqualities:(1)Forsakingtheworld,(2)avoidloveofworldlyluxuries,(3)cherishloveforDivineKnowledge,(4)entertainpiety,(5)bebusyinpenanceandrectification,(6)regularinnightprayers,(7)devoidofpublichelp,(8)trustinGod,guardingDivinecommands,(9)avoidworldlypeopleandworldlydesiresoffood,sleep,andlaughter,and(10)practicecharity.

Absenceofonevoidsanotherandthusrendersattachmentdefectiveandnotentitledtoremunerationinfulluntilunderpenance.

Verses33–44

33.Whoseinvitationcanbebetterthanone(DivineLight)whoinvitesyoutoGod,actsrighteouslyandmaintains,“IsupplicateHim?”

34.Virtue(i.e.reservingtimelyreligioustenets)isnotalikeevil(i.e.divulgingthemuntimely).Undersuchanoccasion,frictionhastobeeliminatedtactfully5whenthefrictionbetweenyouandthepersonwillberesolvedintosincerefriendship.

35.AndthisgiftisnotgiventoanybutthepatientandnoneattainsthisstagebuthewhohasMightyDivineshare.

36.Andifthedevilenragesyou(inafeud),youprayprotectionfromGod.VerilyHeisHearingandKnowing.

37.AndofsignsofHisexistence,arethenightanddayandthesunandthemoon.Donotworshipthesunandthemoon(astheMagiansdo)butprayuntoHim,WhocreatedthemifyouareHiscreatures.

38.Andifyourefuse,outofarrogance,toprostratebeforeHim,knowbeforeyourProvidenceareDivineLightsinprostrationnightanddayanddonotgetfaggedinHisglorification.

39.AndsignsofHisexistenceareinthedriedupsoilwhich,whenWewater,swellsunderpleasureandfertilizes.SimilarlyHeWhoenliveneditverilycanenliventhedead.CertainlyHeisOmnipotent.

40.VerilythosewhomisinterpretOurCommandsshallnotescapeUs.What!HewhocanbecastintoHellisbetterthanonecomesundersafetyonReckoningDay?Actasyoulike.VerilyHewatchesyourdeeds.

41.CertainlytheinfidelswhodefiedtheQur’anwhenitcametothemandcertainly,theTextismighty(revelation).

42.NothingofitspastdescriptionisfalsenoritsfuturepredictionbeingrevelationoftheWiseandthePraiseworthy.

43.Theydonotspeakofyouexceptwhattheyhavespokenofyourpredecessors,andcertainlyyourProvidenceisforgiving(tothepenitent)andmightyinpunishing(theobstinate).

44.HadWerevealeditinPersian,theywouldhavesaid,‘Whyarenotitscommandsmadedistincttous(inourtongue)?”What!APersianrevelationtoanArabicnation!Say,“Tothefaithfulitisguidanceandtheremedyfortheirdoubts.”Thosewhodonotbelieveithavetheirearsstuffedupanditdoesnotappealtothem.Theyareasthoughbeingcalledoutfromafar.

Moral

ThePersianshavesubmittedtoDivineLightsontheArabicTextaresuperiortoArabswhobutcheredDivineLightsontheplainsofArabia.

Verses45–54

45.VerilyWeendowedonMosesthetextwhereintheyformedadivision.HaditnotbeenaforgonedecisionfromyourProvidence,thematterwouldhavebeensettledamongthemandthere.6

46.Itisforhimwhoactsrighteously,bybelievinginHimandwhoactsotherwise,andGodisnotgoingtoill-treatHiscreatures.

47.TohimisreservedtheknowledgeofoccurrenceoftheDayofJudgment,andwhatevercomesoffruitsfrombuds,andwhateverthepregnantcarries.7(Detailsofallofthese)areknowntoHimalone,andwhentheywouldsay,“WehaveinformedThee,wehavecutoffourconnectionswiththemandwecannotproduceany.”

48.Andthosewhomtheyarecallingbeforethiswilldisappearandtheywillfeelsurethereisnoroomforthemtoescape.

49.MandoesnotfeelsatiatedtopraytoHimtogetprosperity,andwhenadversitybefallshimhegetsdespondententirely.

50.WhenWe,outofOurgrace,savourhimofOurbounties,afterhishavingundergoneadversities,verilyheclaimstobeentitletothem,andthinkstheReckoningDayisnottooccur,andfurthermaintainsifeveritdidoccur,andheweretoreverttohisProvidence,hewouldhavesimilarbountiesthere,too(ashehadintheworld).Weshallacquainttheinfidelswiththeirdeeds,andsavourthemofintensepunishment.

51.WhenWeshowerbountiesonaman,heescapessideways8andwhensubjectedtoDivinetrials,heextends(upwards)hisarmsshamelessly.

52.Say,“IfyoudenywhatiswithGod9andhellfortheungratefulwhocanbegreaterenemy(toloseblessingsthereof)thanyou.

53.ShortlyshallWeindicatehimsignsintheheavens10inmanhimself,andwhichwillconvincethemandMohammadisHisrightfulProphet.What!IsnotyourGodsufficientasOmnipotenttotestifytoyourbeingagenuineProphet?

54.Beware!TheyareindoubtofmeetingtheirProvidenceonDoomsday,whereasHeisallPowerfulandKnowing.

5.Byquickandsoundjudgment,goodcommonsense,kindfeelingsandinstinctiveperceptionofcharacterofone,withwhomhehastodeal.

6.Butthe12thLightonhisemergencewillslayallthosewhodifferfromhim,withcompilationofthecontextualtextofAliwhichhewillbring.

7.Maleorfemale,faithfulorfaithless,andthetimeshewilldeliver.

8.DoesnotacknowledgeDivinegifts.

9.Paradiseforthevirtuous.

10.Divinedisasterslikefire,famine,floods,earthquakes,cyclones,andvolcaniceruptions,whichcannotbecontrolledbymanandmustneedsforcetoadmitGod’sexistence.Similarly,personalevents,e.g.suddenillness,causingdisposalofyourproposalsandsuchcalamities,whichcannotbedivertedforthetimebeingbyanymeans,thusupsettingyourplansarefactsremindingyouofGod,controllingyourdestiny.Itespeciallyreferstoeventsoccurring,passingstrange,onemergenceofthe12thDivineLight,whentheenemieswillbetransfiguredandwhichwillleadtoconfirmationoffaith,ingenuinessofDivineLight.

7.Thus,toyouhaveWerevealedtheTextinArabicsoyoumaywarntheresidentsofthemainCityofMecca,andthetownsmenthereabout,andwarnthemoftheDayofJudgment,whereinthereisnodoubt,whenagroupofthemshallbeofParadiseandtheotherofHell.

8.IfGodwished,Hewouldhavemadeallofyouofonegroup(togotoParadise)butheadmitswhosoeverHechooseswithinHisMercy,andthereshallbenosympathizerorassistanttothedisobedient.

9.Havetheytaken,barringHim,anylordalthoughGodisthe(only)LordinRealityandHeisOmnipotent?

10.AndwhateverpreambleforconstitutionyouhaveresolveduponapartfromthefundamentalsofIslam,itsdecisioniswithGod,suchisyourGodmyProvidenceinwhomItrustandtoWhomIdirectmyself.

11.Creatoroftheheavensandearth,Hecreatedoutofyou,yourcompanionsandfromanimalstoo,whereinHemultiplies.HeisunlikeHiscreation(ineveryrespect)beingSelf-existent,AllhearingandSeeing.

12.ForHimarekeysoftheheavensandearth.HeexpandsprovisiononwhomeverHelikesandcontractsotherwise.VerilyHeisOmnipotent.

13.Hehasdetermineforyou(ohyouDivineLightsoftheProphet’sfamily)thesamefundamentalsinIslamregardingwhichHehadcommandedNoah2andwhichwasfullydevelopedWhenWerevealedittoyou,ohMohammad,fundamentalsofwhichWehavealsocommandedtofollowtoAbraham,MosesandJesus,maintainingitsintegrity,withoutmakinganydivisiontherein3exceptDivinenomineewhichwasharduponassociators,whentheywereinvitedtoit(Khum-e-Ghadir).GodselectstheretowhomeverHewills,andguidestheretowhosupplicatesHim.

14.Andtheydidnotsplititbutafterreceiptofknowledgethereof,outofspite,amongstthemselves(forhavinglostrightofsuccessiontotheProphet)beingunqualifiedandhadnotthepunishmentbeenpostponed,aspre-destinedfromyourGod(untiltheDayofResurrection)thematterwouldhavebeensettledamongstthem(forthesplitwhichtheybroughtaboutimmediatelyaftertheProphet’sdeath)andthosewhohavebeengiventhistext,aftertheprecedingprophets,areinsuspicionaboutyourbeingagenuineDivineLight.

15.So,yougooninvitingthemandbeconfirmedinwhatyouhavebeencommanded(regardingDivineLights,onlyasyoursuccessors)anddonothaveanyregardfortheirdesireandsay,“IamfollowingtheText,asitisrevealedtomebyGodandIamcommandedIshoulddojusticeamongstyou.”GodismyProvidenceandyourProvidenceletouractsreflectuponusanyoursonyou.Hence,thereisnodisputationamongstus.GodshallassembleusallandtoHimisreversion.

16.Andthosewhointendlitigating,regardingDivinecommands,aftertheiradmissionofDivineexistenceaftertheiradmission4theirlitigationshallhavenovaluebeforetheirProvidenceandtheyshallhavedivinewrathonthemandforthemisintensepunishment.

17.GodisHeWhorevealedtheTextinTruthwitha(testing)scale(infollowingDivineLights)andyouareunawarehowclosehas(approached)the

dayofJudgment

18.regardingwhichareexpeditingthosewhodonotbelieveinit,whereasthosewhobelieveinitareafraidofit,beingnotfullypreparedandknowingitisinevitable.Beware;verilythosewhoareindoubtaboutitareingreatmisguidance.

19.GodisMercifultoHiscreatures,providingbountifullywhomHelikes,andHeisMightyandOmnipotent.

20.HewhoisdesirousofreapinginEternity,shallWeincreaseitoutputtherein,andhewhoisdesirousofworldlygain,onlyshallWegiveit,untohim(immediately)inproportiontohisdeservinglabour,reservingnoshareforhiminEternity.

21.What!Havetheirassociates5withoutDivinesanction?Haditnotbeenpre-destined,theresultwouldhavebeenoutfortheiraction,andverilyforthetyrantsshallbeinintensepunishment.

22.Youshallseethemstandinginterrorofdisasterfortheirdeeds,whichshallbefallthem(onReckoningDay)andthosewhohavebelievedandactedrighteouslyshallbeingardensofParadise,havingtheirchoicefromtheirProvidence,andthisisamightgrace.

23.ThusdoesGodgivetidingstoHisfaithfulcreatureswhohaveactedrighteously.Say,“IdonotaskanyrewardexceptattachmenttomyDivineLights(myrightfulsuccessors).”Hewhoshallcontributehismitethereinshallfindit(tohiscredit)intensified.VerilyGodisForgivingandAppreciative.

immediatedesires,havingnoideaonthe“FutureState,”whichrequireseachindividualactionondiscretion.

17.AndgrantedtheproofofOurreligioninwhichtheyformedadivisionafterhavingknownit,simplyoutofspite.VerilyshallyourProvidenceonReckoningDaydecideontheirdifference.

18.ThenWefixedforyourreligionofOurchoice,whichyouhadbetterfollowanddonotfollowpassionofthosewhodonotknow.

19.VerilytheyshallnotsaveyoufromthewrathofGod.Evidentlythesetransgressorsarefriendstooneanother,whereasGodistheSympathizerofthepious.

20.Thisisaforewarningformenandguidanceandgraceforthosewhoare

certain.

21.DothetransgressorswhogooncommittingsinsthinkWeshallequalizethemwiththefaithfulwhoactrighteously?Arethelivinganddeadalike?Badistheirdecision.

Whenourprophetisthelastofalltheprophetsandnonetosucceedhim,IslambroughtbyhimhastobepreservedbyhisAhlal-Bayt,DivineLights,andheisaprophetovertheuniverseandheiscommandedin(18)abovetofollowandpropagateittosay,allfaithsarealike,iscontradictingtheText.

22.AndverilyGodcreatedtheHeavensandEarthwithTruth,sowemayrewardeachforhisdeedwithoutinjustice.

23.What!Doyouseehimwhofollowshispassionasgod,forwhichGodhaslefthimtohisfate,sealinghisearsandheartandthrowingaveiloverhiseyes?WhoisgoingtoguideafterGod?Dotheynottakeadvice?

24.Andtheysaidtheworldisnothingbut,whereinonediesandanothertakesbirthandthishasbeenacourseofnature.

25.AndwhenOurCoupletsarebeingreadouttothemtheyhavenoargumentstoadvanceexceptdemandingfortheirdeadfatherstobeenlivenedifWearetrue.

26.Say,“GodshallenlivenyouandputtodeathandshallassembleyouallonReckoningDay,whereinthereisnodoubt,althoughmostdonotappreciate.

Moral

1.Whattheycall“Nature”isGodinfact,andthefaithfulshouldnotabuse“Nature.”

2.Educationdoesnotconsistinmerelycommunicationofknowledgeandtransmissionofskill.Spiritualsideofhumannaturehasalsotobecultivated.

27.AndforGodisProprietorshipofHeavenandEarthandontheDayofJudgmentthefalsifiersshallsuffer.

28.Andeverysectshallcomeontheirkneestorenderaccount,beinginvitedtorecordthedeeds,toberewardedfortheiractions.4

29.(Theywillbeaddressed)hisisOurrecordofyourdeedsDivineLightsshallbespeakingtruthfully(infonfirmationthereof)asWehavebeenrecordingwhatyouhavebeendoing.

30.AndthosewhoembracedfaithandactedrighteouslyshallWeadmitwithinOurGraceandthisisaMightyachievement.

31.Andthosewhodisbelieved(shallbesaid),“DidnotOurCoupletscometoyouwhenyoupridedoverthem,asyouhavebeencriminals?”

32.Andtheyweretold,“God’spromiseistrue,andtheDayofJudgmentshallcome.”Yousaid,“WedonotknowwhattheDayofJudgmentis.Wearesimplypresumptuousandwearenotcertain.”

33.Sohavebeenopenedouttothemevilsoftheirdeedshavingenvelopedthemfortheirridicule.

34.Andtheywillbetold,“Weareneglectingyoutodayasyoudidus,formeetingthisday.Thisishell,yourresidenceandyouhavenonetoassistyou.”

35.ThisisarewardforyourholdingupDivineCommands(i.e.DivineLights)toridicule,invainpursuit,oftheworldly(pleasures)andnoneisgoingtoextricateyououtofit,andnoexcusewillbeheardanymore.

36.AndpraiseisforGod,theCreatoroftheheavensandearth,andtheProvidencethereof.

37.AndegotismisjustduetohimintheheavensandearthWhoisMighty(atavengingthedisobedient)andWise(inrewardingtheobedientfaithful).

Moral

Characteristicsofthevirtuouswhoshallattainsalvation:TheirheartsareGod-fearing,contented,theirwantsarefew,andareeasilyaccessible,faithpreserved,passiondead,temperbornedown,peoplehopegoodinthemandaresafeagainsttheirinjury,whencomparedwiththenegligent,theywillbefoundvirtuousandinasocietyofthelearned,willnotbefoundignorant,thoughsilent,butareincommunionwithGod,forgivetyrantsandarecharitabletothosewhodeprivethemoftheirrights.Theyreconcilewiththedisaffected,avoidevilspeech,theyaremeek,awayfrominjury,readytohelpthevirtuous,inclinedtowardspeople,patientinadversity,andgratefulinprosperity.

TheyrealizeTruthbeforeevidence,donotwastetrust,donotforgetwhatisviolated,donotabuse,donotteaseneighbours,donotderideothers,sympathizewiththeagonized,donotpartakeinunjustaffairs,noravoidtherightpath.Silencedoesnotgrievethem,smileslowly,leavetyrantstoGod,avoidtheworldandfireofitsanxiety,nearingthosewhocomeclosetothem,relenttoeveryone,theiravoidanceisneitheroutofpride,norproximityduetointrigue.

4.Say,“Doyouseewhomyouworship,barringGod,showmewhatofearthhavetheycreated?Havetheyanysharein(creationof)theheavens?Bringmeatestimonythereof(in)anyrevelationbeforethis,oranyrecordofknowledge,ifyouaretrue(insupportofyourclaims).

5.Andwhocanbemoremisguidedthanonewhoworships,barringGod,himwhoshallnotanswerhimuntiltheDayofJudgment.Rather,they(gods)areignorantofhisworship.

6.Andwhenmenwillbeassembled,they(gods)willbehostiletothem(theirworshippers)willdenytheirworship.

7.AndwhenOuropenCoupletsarebeingreadouttothem,theinfidelssaid,whenTruthcametothem,“Thisisanopenmagic.”

8.Dotheysayhehasfabricatedit?Say,“IfIhavedoneso,nonecansavemefromDivinewrath.Heiswellacquaintedwithwhatyouarebusyabout(infalsifyingme).EnoughisHetotestify(aboutmygenuineness)betweenmeandyou,andHeisForgivingandMerciful.”

9.Say,“Iamnotanew(warner)amongtheProphets2andIamnotawareofwhatshallbedonewithmeandyou.IsimplyfollowtherevelationuntomeandIamnothingbutanopenwarner.

10.Say,“Doyousee!IfthisrevelationfromGod,whichyouhavebeendenying,andwhereasithasbeentestified(ByoneAbdusSalam)ofBaniIsrael,whohaveintheTorah,andhasembracedfaith,whereasyouhaveturnedawayinpride,(whatshallbeyourfate).VerilyGoddoesnotguideatransgressingtribe.

Moral

AbdusSalamdemandedareplytothreequestionsfromtheProphetbeforeembracingfaith:(1)asignofanapproachingJudgmentDay,(2)firstfoodmeninParadisehave,(3)towhomisbornadaughterandtowhomason?Replybeingsatisfactory,heembracedIslam.

Verses11–20

11.Andtheinfidelssaidtothefaithful,iftheirreligionhadanygoodinit,they(asanintelligentrace)wouldnothavebeensupercededby(thepoorfaithful,whoareidiots)andwhentheydidnotfollowit,theybegantosay,“Thisisanoldlie.”

12.Andbeforethat,theQur’an,therewastheTorah,guidanceandmercy(forthefaithful)andthisrevelationwhichconfirmsit,inArabic,istowarnthetyrants(ofhellfordisbelievingit)andgivetidingstothefaithful.

13.VerilythosewhoadmittedbymaintainingourProvidenceisGodasdeclaredbyDivineLightsandstrictlyadheredtoit,(i.e.obeyedDivineLightsuntiltheendoflife)shallneitherhavesorrow(forthepast)norgrief(forthefuture).

14.Thesearethemenofparadisetoreside,timeoutofmind,inParadiseinreturnfortheirdeeds.

15.AndWecommandedmantobevirtuoustohisparents,hismotherconceivedandcarrieditintravail,anddelivereditlikewise,andtheperiodofherpregnancyandweaningofitamountedto30months,untilwhenheattainedmaturity(i.e.40years)heprayedtohisProvidencetoguidehimsohemaybegratefultoHim,forHisbountiesonhimandhisparentsandheshouldsoactvirtuously,astowinHiswillandimproveuponhischildren,“VerilyIhavedonepenanceuntoThee,andverilyIamsupplicanttoYou.”

16.ThosearethepeoplewhoseactsshallbeappreciatedandsinsabsolvedandbeadmittedinParadise,asapromisewhichshallbefulfilled.

17.Andhewhoaddresseshisparents,woetoyou!What!DoyouthreatenmeinwhichIshallbetakenoutfrommygravetoaccountformydeedswhereasprecedinggenerationshavenotverifiedit?Andthey(parents)wouldjointlycomplaintoGodsaying,“Sayingwoetoyou.Betterbelieveinus.”Divinepromiseistrue,andhewhorepeats,“Thisisnothingbuttalesofold.”

18.ThesearethepeopleonwhomshallWecondemn(OurPromise)alongwiththeprecedinggenerationsofspiritandmenwhichtheyshallbethesufferers.

19.Andforeveryonearegradesinrewardfortheirdeedstowhichshalltheyshallberaisedwithoutfail.

20.Andwhentheinfidelsshallbebroughtbeforehell(theyshallbeaddressed),“Youenjoyedintheworldprofitingthereby.Todayistherewardofthedisgracefulpunishmentforyourunjustifiablearroganceandfalsification(ofthisDay).”

Moral

1.Self-estimationisanothergreatcauseofmisguidance,wherebytherichlookdownuponthepoorforfollowingtheProphet,takinhimworthyofbeingobeyed.

2.Steadfastnessinfaithleadstosalvationandhasthreegrades,viz.common,

special,andextraordinarilyspecial.CommongradeconsistsinadmissionofGodandDivineLightswithDayofReckoningandfollowingthecommandsonactionandrefrain.Inspecialgrade,onehastogiveupdaintyfoodandclothingandpreferDivineWillwithpiety.InExtra-ordinarygrade,onehastogiveuploveforlife,propertyandchildrenadabsorbthemselvesinDivineGlorybyresigningselftoHim,diligentlytoilingtodevelopspiritualformofsoul.

3.DivineLightHussainandProphetYenya(Joshua)werebornwithinsixmonths.Manattheageof33attainsamaturedgaveandat40isathishighestrise,thereafterhedeclines.

22.Theysaid,“What!Areyoucomingtodivertusfromourgods?Bringwhatyoupromiseusifyouaretrue.”

23.Hesaid,“ItsknowledgelieswithGod.IhavetransmittedthemessageIwasdupedto,butIseeyouareanignoranttribe.”

24.Andwhentheysawacloudspreadingovertheyvalley,theysaid,“Itshall

rain.”Rather,theyhastenedtowardsitwhichcarriedintensepunishment.

25.Itdestroyedeverythingwhichcameincontactwithandtheysawnothingoftheirhousessave.ThusWepunishacriminaltribe.

26.VerilyWehadpopulatedtheminhabitationsoftheirpredecessorsandendoweduponthempowerofhearing,seeingandunderstanding(spiritualfacts),butnoneofthefacultiesofhearing,seeingandunderstandingcametotheirrescue,whiletheyweredisputingGod’sCommandsanditenvelopedthemfortheirhavingridiculedthem.

Moral

Trytousefacultiesgrantedinalltheirvariouspasses,physical,intellectual,andspiritual,asmanissuperiortotherestofcreation.

Verses27–35

27.AndverilyWedestroyedothertribesinthevicinity,(andthus)exemplifiedthem,sotheymayreverttous.

28.Whydidnottheirgods,whomtheyworshipedbesidesAllah,cometotheirhelp?Rathertheyfledawayfromthem,andthisisaproofoftheirlie,whichtheywerefabricating.

29.AndcalltomindwhenWesentyouagroupofspiritswhowerelisteningtoyouwhileyouwererecitingtheHolyQur’an,andwhentheyassembledtheysaid,“Listentoitwithattention”andwhenitwascompletedtheyreturnedtotheirtribetowarnthem.3

30.Theysaidtotheirtribe,“WehaveheardaboutaTextwhichhasbeenrevealedafterMoses(Torah)confirmingthepreviousText,guidingTruthandleadingontoParadise.

31.SobetteradmitthecalloftheDivineMessengerbybelievinginhimsoyoumaybeforgivenofyoursinsandsavedfromintensepunishment.

32.AndhewhoshallnotadmitthecallisnotgoingtowithstandHimonEarth,andheshallnothaveanysympathizerexceptGod,andthoseareinopenmisguidance.

33.What!HavetheynotseenGodcreatingtheheavensandearthwithoutfatigue?AnddotheynotdeemHimOmnipotentontheirrecreationandre-enliveninganddestroyingthem?Aye!Certainly,HeisOmnipotent.

34.AndonReckoningDay,theinfidelswillbebroughtbeforehell,andaddressed,“Isthisnotafact?”They,inreply,willsay,“ByyourProvidence,itisso.”Theywillbetold,“Wellthen,tastethepunishmentforyourinfidelity.”

35.SoyouProphet!Bepatientasthe(preceding)resoluteprophetsanddonotbeinahurryoftheirdestructionasthoughtheyareviewingit,whattheyhavebeenpromised,whentheywillsay,theydidnotstoptheworldmorethananhouroftheday.Thisisamessageandwhoisgoingtobedestroyedexceptthe

disobedienttribe?

2.ThosewhoputfateinDivineLight(Ali)andactedrighteouslyandfurtherattestedtheProphetinwhatwasrevealeduntohim(regardingsuccessionofAli)fromtheirProvidence,shallhavetheirsinsabsolvedwithbettermentoftheircondition(reconfirmationoffaith).

3.ThisisbecausetheinfidelsfollowedimposterswhereasthefaithfulfollowedthetruthfromtheirProvidenceandthusWedescribeformenthestateoftheirfaithfulandfaithlessaffairs.

4.Andwhenyoudefyaninfidel,slayhim,whenyoucapturehimuntilheisbledtodeathorhandcuffhimandifhesurrenders,theDivineLightmaysethimfreeordemandaransomormakehimaslave.Thisisbecause,ifGodhaddesired,Hewouldhavehelpedthem,butHetriesafaithfulwiththefaithless,andthedeedsofthemartyrsshallnotbevoided.1

5.ShortlyshallHeguidethemandimprovetheiraffairs.

6.AndadmitthemtoparadisewithbountieswithwhichHehasacquaintedthem.

7.Ohyoufaithful,ifyouhelptheDivineLights,itwillstrengthenyourfaith.

8.AndthosewhodefyDivineLights,shallbedestroyedwithwastageoftheirpastvirtues.

9.Andthisisbecausetheydislikedwhatwasreveled(totheProphet)byGod(regardingAli)soHevoidedtheirvirtues.

10.HavetheynotseenonEarthwhathasbeenthefateoftheprecedingpeople?Goddestroyedthem,andthisisanexamplefortheinfidels(whichtheirfateshallbesimilar)becauseGodisasympathizerofthefaithfulwheretheinfidelshavenoneforthemtosympathizewiththem.

11.ThisisbecauseGodistheprotectorofthebelieversandthosewhodenythetruthhavenoprotectoratall.

Moral

Manshouldguardhisvirtues,rewardswhereofinEternity,commencingwith

death,asworldlygiftshavetobepaidforhislabourunderDivineJustices,astheDevilhasbeengivenpowerintheworld.Benotledawaybyworldlypositionofpoliticians,betheysocialistsandindustrialistsorscientistsasitispaymentoftheirlabourintheworld.

Verses12–19

12.VerilyshallGodadmitthefaithfulwhohaveactedvirtuouslyinParadise,belowwhichflowstreamsandlettheinfidelsenjoyinthisworldandfeedlikebeasts,astheirdestinationishell.

13.Andhowmanyofthecities,whichwerestrongthanMeccans,whodroveyou(ohProphet)out.Wedestroyedwithouttheirhavingassistance.

14.What!HewhoissteadfastonhisDivineproof(certifyinghisfaithinDivineLights)isalikehimwhoseactshavebeeneulogizedinhiseyebypassionateacts(i.e.hypocrites)andheisaslavetohispassion.

15.Orarealikethegardensofparadise,promisedtothepious,wherearestreamsofwaterwithout(stinking)smell,ormildwithoutchangeoftaste,ofwinesweetofthetaste,andstreamsoftransparenthoney,andfortheminthosegardensareavailablefruitsofeverykindandforgivenessfromtheirProvidence,thesameascomparedtoonewhoisinpermanenthellwhereinheisgivenboilingliquidtodrying,tearingoffhisintestines?

16.Andamongstthemarehypocrites,whopretendtolistentoyou,untilwhentheyleaveyouout,theyaskthelearnedmen,whatdidhesaynow?Thoseare

thepeoplewhoseheartshavebeensealedbyGod,andwhathavefollowedtheirpassion.

17.Andthosewhohaveembracedfaithshallhavetheirguidanceincreased(confirmed)withendowmentofpiety(asignofconfirmation).

18.What!AretheyanticipatingsuddenadventofReckoningDaywhenitsforecastshavealreadycome?Howcantheybesavedwhentheyaredisregardingtheadvicewhichhascometothem?2

19.KnowthereisnoneelseexceptGodtheUnique,praytoHimforforgivenessofyoursins,andoffaithfulmenandwomen,asGodknowsyourwhereaboutsandfinaldestination.

Moral

BestkindofprayersisadmittinginiquityofProvidenceinobeyingDivineLightsandprayingforgivenessofone’ssinsfromHim,throughtheirintercession.

Verses20–28

20.Andthefaithfulsay,“Whynocommandsforcrusadearebeingreceived?”Andwhenaclearcommandthereonisrevealed,whereincrusadeisdeclared,youwillseethoseofdiseasedhearts,lookingatyou,asthoughtheywereunderagonyofdeath.Itwouldhavebeenbetterontheirpart.

21.Tocomplyandmakeanhoneststatement,andwhenparticipation(incrusade)isdecided,hadtheyverifiedit,itwouldhavebeenbetterontheirpart.

28.ThisisduetotheirfollowingwhatenragedGodandtheydislikenedtoseekDivineWill,thusvoidingtheiracts.

23.ThosewhospreaddisaffectionamongstrelativesbyintriguingagainsttheProphethavebeencursed.Hencethefaithfulshouldnotassociatewiththem(onreligiousaffairs)asHellistheirdestination.

24.ThisreferstoShaiksandthoseoflike-minded(asperDivineLightSixinKafi)andneedsnoelucidation.

26.Thishatredwasexposedseveraltimes,viz.intheBattleofBadr,BattleofHunain,BatneNakhle,watertheHajis,revelationofKhum(Khum-e-Ghadeer).

29.DothosewhohaveplottedtheinkWeshallnotexposetheirmalice(towardsDivineLights).

30.Ifwedesired,wecouldacquaintyouwiththeirsigns,andyouwouldrecognizefromthetoneoftheirspeech,andGodisacquaintedwithyouracts.

31.WeshalltryyouuntilWefindout(prove)whoaretherealparticipantsofthecrusadeamongyouandpatientandtestyourreports.

32.Verily,thoseapostatefromfaithandbarredmenfromthepathofGod(i.e.fromfollowingtheImmaculates)anddisobeyedtheProphet,afterguidancewasenlightenedonthem,theyshallnotaffectHiminanyway.Rather,voidis

theiracts.

33.OhyoufaithfulbelieveinGodandtheProphetanddonotvoidyouracts.

34.OFcourse,thosewhobecameapostateandbarredtheDivinePathanddiedassuch,shallneverbeforgivenbyGod.

35.Anddonotslackanddonotpleadforpeace.Youwillgettheupperhand.Godiswithyouandshallnotsuspendyouracts.

36.Wildlylifeisnothingbutplayandsport,whereasifyoubelieveandfearGod,Godwillgiveyoutherewardandwillnotdemandallofyourproperty.

37.AndifHedemands,underinsistence,thewholeofit,andifyouactinhesitationmiserly(asthosewhodepartedHussainatKarbala)Hewouldexposeyourweakness.

38.ThesearethepeoplewhoareaskedtospendinthenameofGod.Thosewhoaremiserly,consequencethereofisontheonewhosoacts,andGodisSelf-sufficientandyouaredependentuponHim.Soifyouturnaway,Hewillreplaceyoubyanothernation(Persians)whowillnotsoactasyoudo.

Moral

Godhasgivensufficientintimationofapostateswho,notwithstandingtheirparticipationinthecrusade,borehatred(toAli)andwastedtheirlaboursunder

secretplottingagainstAli.Ultimately,Godgaveadefinitedecision,i.e.loversofDivineLights,willbefoundoutsideArabia,i.e.inPersiaandelsewhere.

AswhentheGloriousQur’anwasbeingreadouttothem,theyadmittedHisCommandswholly,entertainingDivinelove,i.e.loveofpurity,thatislovefortheDivineLightsandhatredforloversoftheworld.theseareplaceswherefreelyIslamcanbeobservedintheoriginalcultdulyapprovedbyDivinity.

10.VerilythosewhocontractfealtytoyoutheydosowithGod(foryouareHisrepresentativeonEarth)andGod’sHandisovertheirhands,andhewhobreaches(oathoffealty),itshallaffecthimalone,andhewhoshallfulfilitswhichhehascontractedwithGod,shortlyshallGodrewardhimhighty.

Moral

FromtheaboveonecanjudgethepositionofGod’srepresentativeonEarthnominatedbyHim.Tocontravenesuchanauthoritybythought,word,ordeed(withwhichKhalifaIIischarged)isatreasonandcondemnabletoperpetualperditionunlessabsolvedbypenance.ThosewhofightagainstGodandtheProphet(DivineLight)shallbetreatedasperCouplet33SurahFive(TheTable).

Verses11–17

11.Shortlythelags(Bedouins)whoputforthalameexcusetoaccompanytheProphet(onpilgrimage)maypleadtheirabsenceforpreservationofpropertyandchildren,andyoushouldprayforgivenessforthem.Theysaybymouthwhichisnotintheirhearts.Say,“IfGodintendstoruinyouorbenefityou,whocanstopHim?”Rather,Godisacquaintedwithyouracts.

12.RatheryouexpectedtheProphetandthefaithfulwillneverreturnsave(frompilgrimage),andthiswasexposedtoyouascertainwithinyourheartsandyouentertainedallrumoursregardingtheProphet’sruinouoscauseandyouareabadsect.

13.AndfortheinfidelwhodoesnotbelieveinGodandHisProphets,verilyhaveWefixedhell.2

14.AndforGodisthekingdomoftheheavensandearth.HeforgiveswhomHechoosesandpunisheswhomHelikesandisGodforgivingandMerciful.

15.Shortly,thelagsshallsay,whenyougotoKhaibertoseizebooty,permitustofollowyou.TheyintendtochangeDivineCommandsthereby3wherethetreatyofHudebiawasaffected.Say,youshallneverfollowusthere.Similarly,pleadedtoGodpreviouslymenlikemindedwhentheywillarguetheordershavebeengivenforustofollow,andthefaithfulfeeljealousofthem.Rathertheydonotunderstandexceptafew.

16.TellthelagstheywillbeshortlyinvitedtofaceaformidabletribeofHawazin,inthebattleofHunaintofightormakepeace.Iftheycomply,Godshallrewardthemwellandiftheturnawayastheyactedinthepasthewillpunishthemintensely.

17.Itisnotobjectionabletotheblind,thelameandthesicktokeepawayfromthebattlefield,hewhoshallobeyGodandHisProphet(asaDivineLight).ThisisageneralDivineCommand,shallbeadmittedinParadisebelowwhichflowstreams,andhowhoturnedawayshallbeseverelydealtwith.4

Morals

InsixthHijritheProphetdreamt,hewithsomecompanionsgoestopilgrimage.Accordinglyhestartedwith700forUmrataking70camelsforsacrifice.WhenhereachedZulHalifa,wherethepilgrimschangeddressforAhram,spiesinformedtheMeccansoftheProphet’smarchingagainstMecca,soKhalildwith200wassentahead.WhentheProphetreachedHudebiahiscamelrefusedtoproceed.

Therefore,theProphetsentOsman(K.III)toMeccatoclarifythesituationcreatedbyspies,buthewasimprisonedandrumouredtohavebeenkilled,uponwhichBaithurRazwanwasaffectedbeneathatreewherebynonewastofly,untilMeccawasconquered.Meanwhile,trucewasaffected,viz(1)nottomakewarfortenyears,(2)heshouldreturnwithoutpilgrimage,(3)nextyearMeccawillbeevacuatedforthreedaysforhimtopilgrimage,(4)duringthisinterval,ifanyinfidelembracedIslam,heshouldbereturnedtoMeccaandnotviceversa.

ThisarousedsuspicioninthemindofOmar(KhalifaII)astothegenuinessofhisprophecy(thisishismentaltreason).Afurthertermwasimposedthatnobarshouldbeimposedforthesakeofbusinessoneitherparty(prejudiceproceedingoutofpriceandvanitydefyingtruthleadstohell).

Thiscouplethasprecededcouplet10,whichfollowedit.ThisisanerrorincompilationaswaspreviouslynotedinSurahTribes(33:51)tohavebeen29.

Verses18–26

18.VerilywasGodpleasedwiththefaithful(only)withthosewhocovenantedwithyoubeneaththetree,(andnotallwhoparticipated)knowingwhatlaywithintheirhearts.Soheputinconsolationintothem,grantingavictoryattheirhands.5

19.AndplentyofbootyfelltotheirhandsandGodisMightyandWise.

20.Godhaspromisedplentyofbootywhichwillfalltoyourhandsandhehastenshisbootyforyouandpreventedthehands(ofBaniAsadandBaniGothanwhohadlockedthemselvesupinthecastle,anddidnotfaceyouonthebattlefield)soitmaybeasigntothefaithful(oftheProphetbeingagenuineMessenger)andkeepyouontherightpath.

21.Andfurther,otherbootiesoverwhichyouhavenocontrol,butoverwhichGodhascontrolandGodisOmnipotent.

22.Hadtheinfidelsfoughtwithyou,theywouldhaveturnedtheirbacks,whentheywouldhavenosupportorassistance

24.ItisHeWhobarredtheirhandsbeingraisedagainstyouandyoursagainstthemwithinmunicipallimitsofMecca(atHudebia),afterthefactyouhadthecontrolofinfidelsunderyouandGodisacquaintedwithyouracts.

25.Theyarethoseinfidelswhopreventedyoufromtheholysanctuaryandconductingsacrifice,whenitwasheldoverforfuturetoreachitsdestination.HaditnotbeenforthefactthereliveinthetownofMeccafaithfulmenandwomen,inmaskwhomyoudidnotknowandwhomyouwouldhavekilledunknowingly,whenyouwouldhavebeenlaughedatbyassociators,soHeadmitswithinHismercywhomHelikes,andhaditnotbeenforthefaithfulprogenytobebornofthem,theywouldhavebeensubjectedtoseverechastisement(bybeingslain).6

26.Whentheinfidels,whohadfoolishvanityinthem7whenGodinspiredconsolationintheProphetandthefaithfulbyenforcingpietyinthemwhichwasanobligatoryfunctionforthem(beingmostappreciative)andGodisOmniscientwitheveryone.

Moral

1.ItshouldbecarefullyperusedGodhasexpressedHiswilltowardsthefaithfulonlyandnotallthosewhobytheirhaughtybehaviourwereexcluded.(TheinnersecretsoftheirheartsbeingknowntoGod.)

2.SecretofBait-ur-RizwanhadbeenrevealedbyacleverdecisioninthetruceaffectedinsavingthelivesoffaithfulmenandwomenandwhohadconcealedtheirfaithforhavingtolivewiththemajorityofinfidelsinMecca.ThisisDivineWisdom.TheProphetsimplycompliedwithDivineCommands.

3.SuchactsarenoticedwhenAli,intheBattleofSiffin,preventedMalik-e-Ashtartofinishoffthebattle,andsimilarlyImamHussainatKarbalaheldbackthegeneralonslaughtoftheenemy.Thisalsoexplainspostponementoftheemergenceofthe12thDivineLightuntilallthefaithfulareborn.TheDivine

secretsareonlymadeknowntoDivineLightsbyDivineMessages.Theyactrighteouslythroughouttheirlife,unlikepoliticalpedagogueclaimingtoservethenation,dedicatingthemselvesandprayingmobleadingtoruintheirultimatecause(12-9-55).Theyrelyonthewisdomofthemob.

Verses27–29

27.VerilyGodhasverifiedtheProphetinhisdreambeingtruewhichyouwouldentertheholysanctuary,Godwilling,safelyaftershavingyourheadsandremovingyournails,withoutanyfear.Heknowswhatyoudonotknow,sobeforetheconquestofmecca,hearrangedavictoryofKhaiber.

28.ItishewhosentHisProphetwithguidanceandtruereligiontooverpowerotherfaiths(althoughtheymayhavebeenrevealedbyGodbuthaddeterioratedwithlapseoftime)andGodisenoughasawitness(toyourbeingagenuineprophet).

29.MohammadisGod’sProphet;thosewithhimarestricttowardstheinfidels,andconsiderateamongstthemselves.Forbearing,prostratingandseekingDivinegraceandwill,excessiveprostrationhasleftmarksontheirforeheads.TheseveryqualitiesaretobetracedintheTorahandBible,likeacultivatedfieldhavingsprouteditsneedlesadstrengtheneditselftothickness,andthenstoodonitsownfoundation,pleasingitscultivatorsandenragedinfidels,andGodhaspromisedthefaithfulwhohaveactedvirtuouslyforgivenessandgreatreward.

RapiditywithwhichIslamspreadalloverhasalwaysbeenasubjectofgreat

discussionamongsthistorians,whichwasalsopresagedbytheProphetonthebattlefieldoftheTrench.Largeheartedness,politenesswithpietywasmightymoralarmaments,withwhichIslammarchedagainstinfidelstoenforceconversiontoIslam.

4.Verilythosewhocallyououtloudly,behindyourapartment,havenocommonsenseinmostofthem.

5.Hadtheywaiteduntilyouhadcomeoutofyourapartment,itwouldhavebeenbetterintheirfavour,andGodisForgivingandMerciful.

6.Ohyoufaithful,whenadisobedient(passionate)personbringsyouanyinformation,verifyhisstatementlestyoumayunawarestreatthesectunfairlyandberepentantlater.2

7.KnowwithyouisaprophetofGod.Hadheacceptedyourstatementsinmostaffairs,youwouldhavecometogrief,butGodhasapprovedoffaithinyourheartandexalteditanddisapprovedofdisguisingtruth,disobedienceandtransgression,andthosearethewise(whoacceptit).

8.ThisisDivinegraceandbountyandGodisKnowingandWise.

9.Iftwogroupsoffaithfulfightagainsteachother,affectreconciliationbetweenthem.Ifanyonegroupunderdisobediencefightswiththeother,fightagainstthedisobedientuntiltheysubmittoDivineCommands(e.g.BattleoftheCamel)andwhentheysubmit,affectreconciliationbetweenthetwoonjustice,andGodlovesthejust.

10.Indeedthefaithfularenothingbutbrethrenamongthemselves,soaffectreconciliationbetweenthem.FearGodsoyoumaybemercified.

Moral

TheProphet’sadvicetoAliwas,“Goovertovisittheilltoadistanceofonemile,accompanythefuneralifattwomiles,accepttheinvitationwithinthreemiles’radius,visitareligiousbrotherwithinfourmiles,relievetheneedywithinfivemiles,helpthetyrannizedwithinsixmiles,andevermakeamendsforyourweakness,prayingforgivenessandnoteaffectingreconciliationcarriestherewardofacrusade.

11.Ohyoufaithfuldonotlaughatoneanother(byfindingfault).Theyprobablymaybebetterthanthosewholaughatthem(fromthepointofviewofpiety)norshouldwomenlaughatothers,lestthey(latter)maybebetterthantheirsisterswholaughatthem,anddonotlibelanybysignsandcallthembyname.Itisanawfulactionafterhavingembracedfaith.hewhodoesnotmakeamendsisdisobedient.

12.Ohyoufaithful,avoidexcessivesuspicion,someofwhichisasin,anddonotbeafterlookingfordefectsofothers,anddonotbackbiteoneanother.Doyouwanttoeatthefleshofyourbrotherwhomyouspite(whichisunlawful)?FearGod,andGodisMerciful(tothepenitent).

13.Ohyoupeople,WecreatedyoufromAdamandEveasmanwife(althoughthroughpropagation)(hetcreationwasOurlookout)anddividedyouingroupsandsectssoyoucanbeeasilyverifiedandbeforeGod,mosthonouredishewhofearsGodmostandGodisKnowingandacquaintedwithyourdeeds.3

14.TheBedouinssaid,“Wehaveembracedfaith.”Say,“Youhavenot,bettersaywehaveacceptedIslam.Faithhasnotfoundroominyourheart,andifyouobeyGodandHisProphet,Godwouldnotreducetherewardofyouracts.VerilyGodisForgivingandMerciful.

15.ThefaithfularethoseonlywhobelieveinGodandHisProphetandneverdoubtagainandfightinHisnamewithpropertyandlife,andtheseareonlyjustifiedincallingthemselvesfaithful.

16.Say,‘What,doyouinformGodofyourfaith?GodknowseverythingoftheheavensandearthandGodisOmniscient.

17.TheyobligedyouhavingacceptedIslam.Say,“DonotobligeMeforhavingembracedIslam.RatherGodhasobligedyoubyhavingpointedoutthewaytoembracingfaith,ifyouaretrueinyourclaim.

18.VerilywasGodpleasedwiththefaithful(only)withthosewhocovenantedwithyoubeneaththetree,(notallwhoparticipated)knowingwhatlaywithintheirhearts,soheputinconsolationintothem,grantingavictoryattheirhands.4

Moral

Godhasdistinctlydifferentiatedpretendersfromthefaithful.Muslimsarethosewho,byadmissionofthetongue,areentitledtosafetyoftheirlifeandproperty,suchasinheritanceandmarriage,worldlybenefithavingnoclaimstoeternalrewards,untilandunlesstheyprovethemselvesbytheirdeedsofselfsacrificeandproperty,whentestedinthecrusade,asthisearthismerelyaDivineTrust.

AfaithfulcommittingmajorsinsgetsoutofitsfoldandremainsaMuslimwithouthavingtitletoacceptanceofvirtues.AMuslinillegalizinglegaldeedsofIslamorviceversagetsoutoffoldofIslam,renderinghimselfworthyofbeingbeheaded.AfaithfulisonewhoownsfealtyofDivineLightsofhisbodyandsoul–videMoraltoParagraphFive,Sura33,theTribes.

OhGod,showerYourmercyonMohammadandhisreveredfamily,fulfilmyfaith,strengthenmybelief,perfectingintentions,improvemyaffairs,andwithYourmightrectifyyills.Savemefromavocations,anxietywhereofengagesme,andemploymeinwhatYoushallquestionmeontheDayofJudgment,andenablemetopassmydaysinwhatYouhavecreatedme.Donotthrowmedependentonothers,enhancemyprovisionsanddonottrymewiththeevileye,wherebyIenvy,bejealous,bearmalice,orpracticefornication.Endowonmehonour,donotcastmetotakebeingwasted,throughself-praise.Letothersbenefitthroughme,andendowonmeguidance,suchasIshouldnotstandinneedofothers,andwherefromImaynotturn.

Donotraisemystandbeforethepublicuntildegradingmebeforeselfinlikedegree,anddonotcreateanytowardrespectuntilanequallyinwardself-degradationiscreatedinme.Whenmysoulsisdivertedtoworldlyacts,seizeme,priortoenhancementofYourwrath,showerYourmercyonMohammadandhisreveredfamily,anddonotleavemeinsuchaconditionwhereintheremaybedefectswithoutrectifyingsame,andendowonmelovevicemalicetowardsothers.Friendship,vice,envyofenemies,confidenceinvirtuevicesuspicion,proximitytomynearonesvicetheirseparation,giftvicetheirdenial,rememberingthemingoodterms,vicetheirbackbitingme,thanksgivingforakindlyreturn,obligationtorelationsvicetheirdisobedience,sincerity,viceflatter.

Bestowonmestrengthtowithstandtyrantsandtacttoovercometheirtricksinspeechandacts.GuidemetoobeyHimwhorectifiesme,showerYourmercyon
