Hi there all, Over the past few months, since the launch of this Banbury edition, we have been perfecting our distribution areas. This means that some of you last month had this magazine for the first time and this issue, we can add Ratley and Edgehill to the list - so residents here will have this edition landing on their doormats too.

So many new advertisers this month by chance, when I was out about visiting a new client, I was totally intrigued to learn that they kept ‘spend’ ex-battery hens - rescued from the slaughter house and living a natural life in the garden. It certainly captured my heart, and after much thought (taking on hens should not be taken on lightly!), I contacted the British Hens Welfare Trust to reserve 5 ex-batts myself! I have to say, I haven’t been so excited in years, (I live a simple life!). You will find an article about the Trust’s work within the pages of this magazine written by the founder of this wonderful organisation, Jane Howorth.

It is worth us all remembering the battery hens’ plight when we are next doing a shop and instead of buying ‘enriched’ or ‘caged hens’ eggs, buy free range variety instead!

Of course I didn’t start the British Hen Welfare Trust to enhance the taste sensations of the nation; but to try to lift the lid on the thorny issue of battery farming. The subject has always created controversy and inflamed emotions with references in the media often being one-sided and accompanied by graphic images with the result that the farmers

have become as hidden from public view as the hens themselves.

I had been rescuing battery hens from slaughter for eight years when I had that ‘lightbulb moment’ and decided to see if anyone else felt the same way and wanted to give some hens a retirement home.

Right from the start I decided to treat British farmers with respect, and to create a charity with a positive ethos. I didn’t want to berate farmers, I wanted to understand them, work with them, learn more about the egg industry and what happened to hens in other parts of the world.

It soon became apparent there was a massive demand for these delightful creatures and the next step was to build local teams of volunteers around the country. In 2005 the British Hen Welfare

Trust became the first registered charity for chickens and we now have 30 teams around the UK, all of whom access local farms and find good,

caring homes for these hardworking hens. The farmers we work with trust us and are happy to work with us so we can organise a hen collection and take as many hen as we are able to find good homes for.

Re-homers that apply to adopt the hens are usually patient (we cannot supply birds on demand as we

work to farm slaughter dates), and compassionate. We do, like any other responsible animal charity, refuse to home hens to anyone offering less than adequate facilities, and I am quite simply over the moon that we are finding good homes for over 60,000 hens every year.

It wouldn’t happen without the effort,

time and commitment of the national team, and sometimes I am in total awe of the people that I work with, including our latest Oxfordshire volunteer, Lucy Singer, who is establishing our newest rehoming centre in Didcot. And the hens show their appreciation in more ways than one; not because they lay delicious eggs -

they offer so much more than that. Keeping ex-commercial hens is enriching and for anyone who’s not tried some as pets: they are endearing, mischievous, precocious and individual. They may all have brown feathers, but that’s where the similarity ends as most ex-bat keepers will agree.

Oh yes, the chocolate cake I shall be tucking into has

been made not just by me; contributions have also been made by Bunty, Darcy, Scooter and Winky… and that’s why I know it’ll be the best chocolate cake in the world!

1. Always ask for referrals. If you don’t ask, how do you expect to get them? 50% of businesses simply never ask.

2. Ask more than once. Statistics show that if you ask for referrals twice, you’ll get twice as many as if you only ask once.

3. Really ask. Asking means a direct request for referrals i.e. “Who do you know personally who could benefit from using my product/service?”

4. Let your customer know who’s a good referral. Customers aren’t in your business, so you need to tell them exactly who you’re looking for.

5. Help them. Make some suggestions as to people whom they might know i.e. in their line of work or one of their supplies.

6. Give them time to think. Don’t ask for referrals and wait for an answer. Ask and then let them know

when you’ll get back to them to get the referrals.

7. Don’t get names and phone numbers – try to get introduced through a letter, phone call or a meeting.

Finally, once you have your referral, you need to remember to thank the referrer. A thank you card, plus either wine, chocolates, vouchers, lunch etc. are all excellent ways to convey your appreciation.

One of the most delightful and satisfying aspects of gardening has to be growing your own plants from seed – and it’s cheap too.

Seeds are clever little packages with all they need to start a new plant including food, packed inside a protective jacket. All they need from you is moisture and warmth – they will do the rest.

Some plants need as long a growing season as possible to produce their fruits or flowers before the winter frosts begin. Sowing them now indoors will give you sturdy plants ready to go outside in about 8 weeks time when the last frosts have gone.

Some seeds to sow now: Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines, spring onions, cabbage, spinach, chard, petunias, lobelia, marigolds, stock, antirrhinums, ageratum.

As a rule of thumb, seeds

need to go under a cover of compost roughly one and a half times deep as they are large. So, the bigger the seed, the deeper it goes. Thinly scatter the seeds on moist specially formulated seed compost. Or you can ‘loosen’ ordinary potting compost by mixing in vermiculite. The lightness of the compost will help the emerging roots to develop nicely. Cover with the required amount of compost. Once the second pair of leaves has formed, the plants have used up their food resources and are ready to be moved on. Transplant or ‘prick out’ the seedlings to fresh compost with plenty of space to grow on. Ease them free of the soil and lift by the seed leaves so that you don’t damage the roots or stems and gently firm them into the new compost.

Chicken and Sundried Tomato Pasta Bake (serves 4)

200g sun dried tomatoes

50g sun dried tomato puree

1 red pepper, chopped

Olive oil

3 small free range chicken

breasts or 4 de-boned thighs,

cut into bite sized pieces

Sea salt and freshly ground black

pepper

2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely

sliced

500g dried pasta

500ml double cream

100g parmesan cheese, grated

2tsp paprika powder

• Preheat oven to 200 degrees C.

• Heat a saucepan big enough to hold all the ingredients which can also go in the oven (otherwise

transfer to an oven dish at a later stage).

• Pour in some olive oil.

• Season the chicken with salt and pepper and brown them gently in the oil, add the peppers, paprika

and the garlic.

• Turn the heat down and simmer gently until the

chicken has cooked through.

• Add the sun dried tomatoes and the puree.

• Meanwhile cook the pasta in plenty of boiling

salted water as per the cooking instructions on the

packet. Drain well.

• Add the cream to the chicken, bring to the boil and

turn the heat off. Taste, add more seasoning if needed.

• Add the pasta and mix well. Add ¾ of the parmesan,

stir well.

• Add to an oven proof dish (if needed) and sprinkle

the rest of the cheese on top and bake until golden

brown and bubbling.

• Drizzle with a little olive oil and serve.
