Leamington and County GC has the experience of over 100 years of golfing tradition combined with a healthy modern attitude to bringing new golfers into the game.

This year’s news wasn’t quite as meticulously planned. But in the long term it looks like being equally as relevant. The club and the greens team trialled a new drainage system for their 13th green. It’s the one in the far corner of the course if you know Leamington, a beautiful hole, it’s greenside location sheltered by woodland. The ideal spot to try out what on the face of it is a very simple bit of kit.

PC (Passive Capillary) Drainage is in layman’s terms a one inch diameter rope with a fibreglass

element and a stainless steel mesh core that together soak up excess water from just below the surface of the green during periods of heavy rainfall. As the

picture illustrates, narrow trenches are cut into the green, the rope is laid and is instantly ready to make the impact required. Even better than that, PCD was laid in the morning on Leamington’s 13th, and the green was ready for play again on the same afternoon! It really is that simple.

Effective too, the rains came, the green drained beautifully and the members were delighted. So much so that the club are planning two more PCD developments for the 12th and 15th holes this autumn.

Safe to say that the trial has been a big success, set to further improve the playability

of one of Warwickshire’s most popular golf courses. Gently undulating parkland that makes an instant early impression with a challenging first across the valley then straight on to the signature second. This is beautiful, as cute a par three as you’ll get, through a pine clad lined guard of honour to a deceptively difficult to stay on putting surface with banking and bushes all around.

Once away from the trees you emerge into open countryside for a stretch before returning to the clubhouse neatly at the raised ninth green. The back nine starts with a few that could be described as ‘scoring holes’ and you might need them too, because once reaching the aforementioned 13th in the far corner, the superb closing run of holes will test your games to their limits.

Good strategy and accuracy are required too to survive this testing spell, dog legs, ditches, further water hazards and out of bounds are all lined up to challenge the golfer to the very end. However find the right club to cross the valley one last time at the new par 3 18th and a closing birdie

is within everyone’s grasp. The perfect end to a great round of golf.

Leamington & County GC, one of the most popular private members golf clubs in Warwickshire, has over 100 years of tradition combined with a healthy modern attitude to bringing new golfers into the game. One of the hardest working venues in the region too, they are always up

to something interesting here, last year unveiling course changes and something of a re-route that has been most successful.
